Google+ refresh triggers social fury

, Apr 11th 2012 Discuss [3]

As Google continues their push to keep the Google+ social network in the spotlight, they've updated the look, feel, and functionality of the entire network in a move that's got some a bit frazzled. As it is with each time a site brings a relatively radical upgrade to their user interface, there are complaints galore across Google+ itself, Twitter, and of course the opposing force: Facebook. Will this newest move have Google jumping in the popularity poles as they did when the service was first shown off, or will this be the first Google+ Update Hate day as Facebook users are all too familiar with already? , Apr 11th 2012 Discuss [8]

Google’s Facebook rival, Google+, is getting a makeover, with a more customizable interface, boosting circle sharing tools and a more polished Hangouts video calling system. The redesigned social network is “simpler, more beautiful” than before, Google’s Vic Gundotra says, with the ability to drag apps up and down the new “dynamic ribbon” down the left of the screen, as well as accessing common actions from a hover-over toolbar and the ability to hide little-used apps under a catch-all “more” section.

Facebook’s Instagram buy is a $1bn mobile landgrab

One billion dollars either gets you a huge amount or very little these days. Facebook has either bought itself 27m registered users, or a few retro-style filters in a slickly designed app for iPhone and Android. Of course, in reality they’re one and the same thing: in acquiring Instagram, Facebook has opened the door to a new bubble of membership – albeit an expensive one, at around $37 a user – and added another string to its content sharing portfolio. It’s also gained a further footprint on smart devices, arguably the most important aspect of the deal.

Google quiet on social network privacy

Google is yet to follow Facebook's lead and commit to a password privacy policy that would prevent intrusive employers snooping through Google+ profiles, though pressure is likely to mount as lawmakers wade into the debate. Facebook made headlines last week by altering its "Rights and Responsibilities" policy to make sharing or soliciting an account password a violation of its terms & conditions, threatening legal action to anyone found doing so.
