Those residing on foreign shores hoping to experience a piece of England without buying an expensive plane ticket can do so with new high-resolution images courtesy of Google Maps. Google has added a couple of new features to Maps, including the ability to use Street View on Downing Street. Users can now peruse the outside of number ten, the famous residence of the country’s prime ministers, and Google has also started to roll out new high resolution map images for various countries across the world. Google Maps adds panoramic images from Antarctica to Street View

Google Maps just added a whole bunch of 360-degree panoramic images to Street View of some great spots in Antarctica, both inside and out. Among those great spots include places like the South Pole Telescope, Shakleton’s hut, Scott’s hut, Cape Royde Adélie Penguin Rookery and the Ceremonial South Pole. Google Maps had partnered with the Polar Geospatial Center at the University of Minnesota and the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust to make it all happen. Read The Full Story

Apple Maps spurs full Google Maps app

Soon you'll be able to download your very own entirely Google-made version of Google Maps for iOS, this time not having Google on the back end of the Apple interface you've seen since the iPhone was launched. This new version will be released soon, with Google executive Jeff Huber speaking up this week on the subject with a simple "we look forward to providing amazing Google Maps experiences on iOS." Google introduces the Endangered Languages Project

Google has today announced the Endangered Language Project, which aims to save languages that are on the verge of extinction. Google says that there are over 3,000 languages that need saving, and feels it’s important to document them to preserve cultural diversity while “honoring the knowledge of our elders and empowering our youth.” The project aims to give those interested in preserving the languages a place to store the necessary information. Google Maps adds UK waterways as routes

Google is constantly updating the routes and maps that uses for Google Maps used by millions of people around the world to where they want to go each day. Google has teamed up with Canal and River Trust, which is the charity that will be in charge of all the UK water network starting next month. Part of the deal between Google Maps and the charity will include adding 2000 miles of canals and river paths to the Maps database. Read The Full Story

Google denies Street View charges as senator snipes at spy planes

Last week, the U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office reopened its Street View privacy investigation following the FCC’s findings in the United States. In a letter penned to Google, the ICO believes it was misled, with Google stating at the time that it wasn’t a deliberate data collection attempt and that no engineers had knowledge of the issue. Google Maps preempts Apple Maps with 3D Tour Guide

This week at Google Maps' Next Dimension special event we got to see how powerful Google's world of mapping has really become with a full 3D vision of the world in a much more visually pleasing way than we've ever seen before. This talk started with a brief history of the 3D world, starting all the way back in 2003 when the 3D vision was nothing more than a whisper, while 2008 started with a bang with some "3D" images with flat, nearly-real images for arial views. This new version of Google Maps has airplanes capturing Oblique Images as captured from several sides as the plans overhead - this is just the first step. Read The Full Story

Google Maps goes Offline

This week the Google crew have released The Next Generation in Google Maps in a completely Offline experience. You'll soon be able to download an entire map of a city to your mobile device and continue to navigate regardless of if you are connected to your data network or not. Though Google Maps has always cashed a certain amount of information on your device online before you go offline, this version of the software helps Google build the global baseline for maps by allowing you to take their information wherever you go - even without your network. There’s been a lot of speculation regarding Apple’s move to a new mapping system in iOS 6, with the company tipped to drop Google Maps in favor of its own mapping acquisitions, especially with C3 Technologies.
