Volt fires possibly caused by welded parts near the battery pack

The Chevrolet Volt has been under investigation for a while now after several of the vehicles caught fire after crash testing. GM has since offered to buy the Volts back from concerned drivers and the issue has hurt sales of the vehicle that were already slow. GM's fire problems with the battery-powered Volt may have been only the latest of the car company's headaches around its earth-friendly vehicle. General Motors is apparently set to miss its conservative first year sales targets by 20-percent, the WSJ reports, with around 8,000 of the 10,000 expected to be sold set to leave the forecourt before 2011 is through. The GM Volt extended range hybrid has been in the news a lot lately after a test vehicle caught fire in the test center parking lot three weeks after a side impact crash test. The fire sparked a wider investigation into the Volt and other vehicles that use similar battery packs. Three more Volt vehicles were tested and two of them also had battery issues, one caught fire after a side impact crash test and the other smoked and emitted sparks. GM has worked long and hard to bring the Volt to market and the car is now facing its biggest challenge with several fires erupting after crash tests. The car was originally unveiled back in 2007 and then it took longer than GM had hoped to get the car onto the market for consumers to buy. The Volt has hit a few speed bumps along the way, but the cars have been selling and are nice options for the green fans that want an EV but don’t want to worry about how far they can drive. The Chevrolet Volt is an interesting car that GM touted as an extended range electric vehicle that has been under investigation recently after one Volt caught on fire. The first Volt to catch fire happened in the parking lot of a US crash test facility. That Volt caught fire three weeks after a crash test and the fire was caused by a ruptured battery pack. I think most people that get behind the wheel of a car are decent enough drivers. Some of the people out there that drive are plain stupid though. You know the sort that drive 90 mph on the highway when it's raining so hard you can’t see in front of your car. Or the sort of driver in the 4x4 truck that thinks they can drive 75 while everyone else crawls along at 30 mph in a snowstorm. If I had to pick my single favorite film of my youth, it would be Cannonball Run. I loved that flick and it is the movie that first got me interested in cars and hot chicks in shiny purple jumpsuits. I will never forget that opening scene with the Lamborghini wailing away as it runs from the police. A rumor is making the rounds that GM might be backing a remake of the flick. General Motors has announced that it will be offering the industry's first center-mounted airbags in select vehicles starting in 2013. The new airbag deploys from between the front seats and aims to protect drivers from side collisions on the passenger side but also provides additional protection to both the driver and passenger during side impacts or rollovers. OnStar has updated its privacy policy so as to permit position and speed tracking of cars with the navigation system installed, even if drivers do not have an active subscription. The change is already being criticized by privacy activists, who also highlight the clauses allowing OnStar to sell GPS tracking data to its choice of partners, albeit in anonymized form. That, OnStar spokesperson Adam Denison, is yet to happen, though the General Motors subsidiary does reserve the right to begin distributing location data in the future. OnStar has announced a new update for the iPhone and Android versions of the RemoteLink app. The app will work with any RemoteLink-enabled vehicle. The new update is cool because it allows the driver to select a destination using their smartphone and then shoot that destination over to the car for turn-by-turn driving directions.
