Ford buys Livio for single in-car infotainment and app standard push

Ford has acquired Livio, a car mobile connectivity company specializing in hooking up smartphone entertainment and navigation to dashboards from a variety of brands, as the car company pushes to lead an industry standard for automotive apps. Ford already has its own infotainment system, SYNC, developed with Microsoft and using AppLink for smartphone integration. However, the company also released an open-source version of AppLink - Smart Device Link - to the GENIVI Alliance, the group leading attempts to make cross-marque infotainment systems possible.

That's the odd double approach of the Competitive Teardown Area, the high-security garage where cutting edge 3D printing and rapid prototyping sits alongside socket sets and angle grinders. The luckier cars start as homegrown constituent parts and leave as near-complete mockups of tomorrow's models; the unlucky ones - often wearing badges from Ford, Mercedes, Honda, Toyota, and other GM rivals - are making their final journey in one piece when they roll in through gates. It's the sort of place where, ordinarily, you'd need to be part of GM's engineering inner-circle to walk around, but SlashGear was invited to pay a special visit.

Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban and GMC Yukon redesign detailed for early next year

General Motors appears ready to begin offering a redesigned Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban as well as a GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. It is looking GM will keep these vehicles the same size as we have become familiar with, but include upgraded materials, better handling and even best-in-class fuel efficiency. These new models are expected to arrive in early-2014 and for now pricing has yet to be revealed.

Cadillac Elmiraj Concept wants to give BMW sleepless nights

Cadillac has taken the wraps off of the Elmiraj Concept, the company's latest design study, a luxury four-seater grand coupé borrowing design cues from the monstrous Ciel Concept. Over 5.2 meters long, with the sort of menacing styling Darth Vader might approve of, the Elmiraj Concept runs a 4.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 good for around 500HP, pushing its power through the rear wheels in what seems a direct - if only theoretical at present - challenge to BMW's 6-Series tourer, and wrapping the interior in backlit titanium and leather.
