PlayStation VR release date and pricing revealed

Today the final consumer edition of the PlayStation VR headset has been revealed. They'll be releasing this device with a set of specifications that is both impressive and limited - prepared to meet the demands of the PlayStation 4 itself, including its hardware and software limitations therein. This device works with a single 5.7-inch display, rolling with 1920 x 1080 resolution - that's 960 x 1080 pixels per eye. Refresh rate is at 120 Hz, 90 Hz, and sensors include 9 LEDs/360-degree tracking.

Unity engine 2016 demo is terrifyingly realistic (paving way for VR)

Today the folks at Unity have revealed a shirt film called "Adam" to demonstrate the abilities of their Unity engine. This clip is part of a longer film that'll be released (in full) by the Unity Demo team at Unite Europe 2016 in Amsterdam. Until then, you have this - a masterpiece in its own right. This demonstrates not only the power of Unity for games, but for the future of film, too. Unity announced this week the availability of both Unity 5.4 and Unity 5.3.4 (stable), as well as the availability of beta releases to personal edition users. In Unity 5.4 this means big things not only for flat, 2D rendering, but for virtual reality rendering as well.

Xbox One Win10 cross-network play enabled for all online games

In the immediate future Microsoft will be opening the doors to cross-network cross-device multiplayer gaming action to for the masses. "In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live," said Chris Charla, Director ID@Xbox, "we’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well." The first title to make use of this update will be Rocket League - you'll be able to play on your Windows 10 PC while your buddies play on their Xbox One. Super fair for all parties involved, indeed!

HTC Vive gets Desktop Theater Mode for playing any game in VR

With the new HTC Vive virtual reality headset running SteamVR, Valve has paved the way for users to play VR-specific games as soon as the device arrives. But what about when you feel like playing an older game, or one that isn't designed for VR? Valve is already on it, as they've just announced a Desktop Theater Mode feature, which will allow any Steam title to run on the Vive, as well as any future SteamVR headsets.

As virtual reality headsets are on the verge of becoming major platforms for gaming and more, we're going to see more accessories and tie-in products that aim to enhance the VR experience. The hand-held controllers that are included with HTC's Vive are a great example, allowing you to control and manipulate objects presented in VR. But what about the most natural tool we have to do those things, our hands? That's the idea behind the Manus VR gloves, which allow natural hand motions to serve as inputs.

Watch the trailer for Koi, the first PS4 game developed in China

Seeing big-name video games for a major console come out of China is not an everyday thing, let alone small, indie titles. So it's fitting that the first such game for the PlayStation 4 is a beautiful, vivid experience called Koi. Coming from Chinese developer Oasis Games, Koi will be one of the first title to be published Sony Computer Entertainment Shanghai (SCES), and will be seeing its debut public appearance at the Game Developers Conference later this month.

Now that the final consumer editions of both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive virtual reality headsets have been revealed with set pre-order dates, Sony needs to get into gear with regard to specifics about its upcoming PlayStation VR hardware. The gaming giant seems to know this, as they've just announced a special media event to take place on March 15th, alongside the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

Back in late 2013 we had our first opportunity to bring a magical experience to our living room with the PS4 game "PlayRoom." This game worked with the PlayStation 4 Camera, showing us our living room onscreen with augmented reality characters and objects galore. This week we've been given our first glimpse of what PlayRoom will look like in virtual reality, with Project Morpheus in 2016. These demos were the last part of the collection of early visions we were shown by Japan Studio, the same group of developers that made The PlayRoom.

It's time we got up close and personal with the pre-Alpha of Unreal Tournament 4, do you think? We got the opportunity to do so this week with Epic Games, they being prepared to show the game in this pre-alpha stage to the public, showing the game in a state that is indeed very, very early - but already mightily impressive to behold. The game mechanics are simple, and multiplayer is limited, but already the game is extremely fun to play with - and of course to take in.
