Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Hands-on

Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus hardware is only half of the Android excitement today: the other part is arguably more significant, the first deployment of Ice Cream Sandwich. The most significant refresh to Android in several generations, Android 4.0 brings tablet and smartphone strands in-line with a new, Honeycomb-inspired UI and a brace of new features. We’ve had our hands on the Galaxy Nexus for the past few days, and while it’s too soon for the full SlashGear review, join us after the cut for some first-impressions and demo videos.

Galaxy Nexus Unboxing and Hands-on

Could the Galaxy Nexus be the most anticipated Android phone of the holiday season? It certainly has some strong competition, with the DROID RAZR and HTC Rezound doing their level best to muscle into the market ahead of the first Ice Cream Sandwich phone’s arrival. Still, Samsung’s smartphone – and the third device to wear the official Nexus branding – has plenty to differentiate it, not just Android 4.0. The HSPA+ model has arrived on the SlashGear test bench; read on for our first impressions.

Galaxy Nexus launch day blunders

Samsung's Galaxy Nexus went on sale in the UK this morning, but retailer Phones 4U's exclusivity period hasn't gone entirely smoothly. The first in line this morning to buy the Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone - promptly tweeted out by Samsung UK - actually received a device running what was apparently a test ROM, Engadget reports, and had to return to have his phone exchanged. Meanwhile, Phones 4U has confirmed to us that, while no mention of SIM-free handset sales is made on the company's site, the Galaxy Nexus is available unlocked and off-contract; in fact, we believe more unlocked devices than contract devices have been sold today. Will you buy a Galaxy Nexus? Our poll says YES, you will!

We’ve had a poll up on the front page of SlashGear since the official announcement of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus in Hong Kong on the 18th of October, and from what the 16,700+ of you voters have said, it looks like this device is going to be a big seller! Of course the second in line option for this poll was “No, I don’t like Android,” this leading us to believe that you iPhone users out there aren’t about to switch over to the other platform, even IF it’s the next-generation hero for both Google and Samsung. The rest of you participants have got your reservations, seeking one of four options as far as why you’ve either got no Nexus in your future or need a bit more information on the release.

Galaxy Nexus uses fortified glass, not Corning Gorilla Glass

Though Corning's Gorilla Glass has all but dominated the review circuit when it comes to must-have features on mobile devices over the past year, it appears that Samsung and Google have opted for a different solution for their next hero device, the Galaxy Nexus. This device will play host to Google's next-generation mobile OS Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and is set to have a host of powerful features that make it a force to be reckoned with. Corning has assured the public that lo, and alas, the Galaxy Nexus does not have Gorilla Glass sitting on its front. Read The Full Story

Galaxy Nexus uses same NXP NFC solution as Nexus S

This week it was revealed by none other than NXP that they were the ones that have been in the Nexus S from Samsung powering its NFC component and will also be in the Galaxy Nexus, they therefore providing the NFC for both Google hero devices. This isn't a gigantic deal for those of you that just want your devices to work, not caring about what's deeply embedded in the devices to make them work so spectacularly, but for the Android need-to-know crowd out there, you'll need to know this: the same NXP PN65N solution used in the Nexus S will now be used on the Galaxy Nexus. Now that the Galaxy Nexus is being revealed to the world in more places than one and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is about to hit the public in a very big way, there’s certainly a few questions you, the Android user, might want answered. While in Hong Kong earlier this month, we took part in an early Q and A session with several of the head product managers of Android itself. What follows is a transcript of that session.
