Mercedes Benz have announced their latest myCOMAND “Internet-Based Infortainment System” at the LA Motor Show, and while the name might be a bit tacky the system itself is anything but.  Controlled by a multifunction dial and joystick, the system makes the most of a large, high-resolution LCD display to offer VoIP, a web browser, GPS with satellite imagery and a hard-drive based media server.

Here’s clever for you: if you’re a city designer of the future, how do you balance residents’ desires to have their own private vehicles, which they can drive themselves, with your own desire for the sweeping cable-car and monorail tracks that no 22nd Century urban metropolis should be without?  The answer could be Roberto Vackflores’ LIFT concept, individual autopods that can selectively hook onto overhead tracks.

It seems not all is well with the Tesla Roadster. According to Martin Eberhard, the former CEO and co-founder of Tesla Motors, the car apparently wastes a lot of energy when just sitting parked.

Could an electric car that actually, you know, looks nice, be on the way? The Chevy Volt certainly does seem to possess a decent looking body, and though the spy shots don’t give a good idea of the car’s performance, it gives me hope.

Toyota have unveiled a trio of “Personal Transport Assistants” that, like the Segway, balance on two wheels using internal sensors and gyroscopes to remain upright.  The Winglet range consists of the L, M and S versions, the latter two of which don’t have handlebars and instead are gripped by the calves.
