DFS has taken furniture and iPod audio docks to their logical, mashed-up conclusion with the Trophy Cuddler Audio Sofa, a two-person chair for those who daren’t snuggle without musical accompaniment.

Boasting “distinctive” design – we’ll leave you to make up your mind whether it’s an aesthetic joy or an eyesore – the iPod Cuddler Chair has not only a dock to recharge your Apple PMP and funnel its music out through its stereo speakers and bottom-shuddering subwoofer, but a USB port and Bluetooth too. That means you can hook up non-Apple media players and phones, or even your laptop for some impromptu gaming.

An aux-in port caters for the resolutely old-fashioned, while an SD card slot makes this perhaps the first ever sofa to have its own storage. Seven color combinations and three different foot finishes are on offer too.

DFS is offering the Trophy Cuddler Audio Sofa for £699 ($1,097) until the beginning of July, after which point it will double – double! – in price.

Swedish retailer IKEA plans to launch a range of AV-integrated furniture later this year, UPPLEVA, delivering LED smart TVs, sound systems and Blu-ray in cable-tidied all-in-one systems. The media furniture, created in partnership with Chinese firm TCL, will be priced from around 6,500 Swedish kronor ($955), and be offered in three different designs; initially eight countries will get the kit from fall this year, before worldwide availability in spring 2013.

All three variants will include a TV and a 2.1 sound system with a wireless subwoofer, along with CD/DVD/Blu-ray support. There’ll also be an internet connection – WiFi, according to the video below – for sets above 24-inches; IKEA hasn’t specified exactly what panel sizes will be on offer yet, though the line-up is believed to kick off at 20-inches. Ports include four HDMI on the side of the screen, along with two USB; there’s also an AV-input for your iPod, and an FM radio.

IKEA claims its research shows there’s a big market for home entertainment devices which hide the cabling away from sight. All of the new AV furniture will route the necessary connections – at least those which aren’t wireless – directly through the hardware itself, and everything will be controlled via a single remote.

Judging by the interface shown below, the systems will also offer support for USB devices, such as playing back photos, music and video from an attached hard-drive. Sweden, France, Italy, Poland, Spain, Denmark, Norway and Portugal will all get the new UPPLEVA range first, with the initial units dropping in fall this year.

The Samsung SUR40 multitouch table, first unveiled last CES and once again this past CES 2012, is now finally ready to ship. The tabletop features a massive 40-inch Full HD 1080p LCD display protected by perhaps the world’s largest piece of Gorilla Glass. It runs Microsoft’s second-generation platform called Surface 2.0 along with Microsoft’s PixelSense touchscreen technology.

The SUR40 with Surface 2.0 tabletop can be placed horizontally on table legs or mounted vertically on a wall as it no longer uses cameras underneath the table for recognizing finger-touches. Instead, it now uses PixelSense, which allows more than 50 simultaneous touch-points on the surface.

Inside, the table is powered by an AMD-based Windows 7 machine running Microsoft’s Surface 2.0 platform. The Surface 2.0 SDK will allow developers to create custom apps for the table, although not many folks will be able to afford the table itself, which is priced starting at $8,400 for the tabletop only and $9,049 if purchased with a matching stand. Shipping begins this month.

What we’ve got here is a design by John Leung which exists as two separate pieces: first, the table which is a simple slate-bars top made in black, the other the carpet which shows fish in a strange array – together they swim before your eyes. What you’re looking at is only the latest representation of one of the oldest optical illusions in the books, the slates tricking your eyes into believing that each line of the fish is a new frame in the living video you’re seeing. The same thing happens when you watch a movie, only here it’s done without moving parts.

Leung has some more artistically driven ideation in this project, such as how mythologically the carp (fish) is meant to symbolize such things as bravery and fortune, and that this carpet with its fancy “Carp Pet” title is meant to be a “humorous extraction of the carpet that reveals this intriguing little conversation piece of the floor.” On top of that, the carpet doesn’t look half bad without the table either! Might give you a headache every once in a while, but that’s the price you pay for coolness.

It’s the moire pattern that draws interference in your eyes, made plain with the table, and made impressive enough to catch the eyes of the judges at the last show this cool ensemble was featured in. This design is, believe it or not, the second Red Dot Design Award 2011 winner we’ve posted today. This carpet is not ready for mass production yet, and we’re sure mister Leung is looking for additional partners to make such a thing happen – what you see above and below is the final model on the other hand, just waiting to swim to greater glory!

When it comes to gadgets, its not often that one will catch your eye for its softness, but that’s just what designer Takaaki Oguchi has done with this one – it’s a light up pillow. Without a doubt the most comfortable bit of technology I’ve seen all week, Oguchi’s “inSoft” LED light pillow has the ability to light from within without making your ear go “ouch!” Through a combination of cool-burning LED lights and padding that’ll allow just so much light to travel through it surrounding the light module, Oguchi may well have created the nightlight every kid is staying awake at night screaming about.

This isn’t a completed project, kids, I’m sorry to say, but it is on its way to becoming one. This is what’s known as a conceptual industrial design, one made by the designer without as much regard for the final product as one further down the production line would have. It is through projects like these that the most innovative concepts are brought to life – and of course, to light. Soft enough of an idea for you?

Meanwhile this pillow object has already been making the rounds abroad. The inSoft pillow has won the prestigious Koizumi Lighting Award, this bringing it closer to the production floor once more. Now we’ve all just got to find someone with a load of cash to put under the pillow, as it were, so that we can all have one straight from the store. Light em up!

So you sit at your desk all day, do you? Sounds familiar to me – in fact more often than not I find myself sitting in several places looking for the best “desk” to meet my ever-changing daily needs; for example right after a meal or early in the morning are completely different levels of leaning back or sitting up. The folks at Herman Miller have heard the cries of you and I, ladies and gentlemen of the tech-using community, bringing forth the “Envelop Desk” that has the ability to move back and forth with the user, leaning down and towards the user when they need it most.

While the desk may not look like anything extremely spectacular on it’s own (it being the modern minimalistic masterpiece that it is,) it’s the pulling back and down of the black piece of the desk that makes the most magic. You’ll see what’s going on in the video below, as Herman Miller specialists see a young lady working at her desk in the normal fashion, taking away the elements that aren’t working for her, replacing these then with Herman Miller pieces of furniture, the Envelop Desk included – she gets to a point in her day when she wants to lean back a bit and – what’s that – she’s got the ability to pull her desk back and down to compensate!

Based on what Herman Miller is noting was “extensive research and development,” the Envelop Desk provides “the ideal alignment of a users eyes and posture with their screen for optimal ergonomic comfort.” Sounds rather nice and comfortable to me. And what’s best? The Envelop Desk is made entirely of recyclable materials so if you ever find a desk to replace it, this piece of furniture can be broken down and turned into new desks!

This desk is going to run you right around $960 USD before shipping costs, and you’ve got a couple choices as to what you’re going to get for your surface material and base finish. Designers Bill Stumpf and Jeff Weber would LOVE for you to pick one up, and your humble narrator CERTAINLY wouldn’t mind having one for himself. ALSO Herman Miller lets us know that between the 1st and 15th of August you can get standard shipping for just $9 on all orders over $499.

We have all been there, 30 outlets, but only able to use 6. Nothing is more frustrating than buying a monster power strip with 30 or more outlets only to find most of them are un-useable. Not because there is something wrong with the outlets, but the shape of the power adapter you are plugging in ends up covering 2 or 3 additional outlets. Then there are those fat power adapters that can only be plugged in from one angle and naturally that angle makes almost half the power strip useless. Pivot Power, from Quirky has a solution. Pivot Power is a flexible power strip that can help reduce some of that frustration.

Each outlet on the Pivot Power can bend or flex to help find a more convenient angle to plug something in. There is a hinge between every outlet on the strip. This allows more flexibility when choosing how to plug something in, literally. They only swivel in the side to side direction; it would have been nice to see one or two of the outlets bend in the vertical direction also. But as it is, the Pivot Power could probably help simplify the process many of us have to deal with when trying to find a free outlet.

It comes in white with six feet of cord and six flexible outlets. Six outlets is not enough for most of us, so we will have to buy a few. Just don’t give in to the temptation to daisy-chain the power strips together in a long line with one plugged in to another. It offers 672 Joules of surge protection, and is available for $29.99. Not the only power strip solution of its kind, but we like the overall design. It looks like it will match Ikea style décor. (That may or may not be a positive for you.)

If you’re in the market for a new desk or table, before you head to your local furniture store take a moment to fantasize how awesome it would be to replace that old wooden thing with Ideum’s new MT55 HD Multitouch Table. We mentioned their older MT50 model about a year ago, but they just announced today a new MT55 HD model that’s a 55″ beauty sporting full 1920×1080 HD resolution.

The MT55 HD is a fully integrated system with a multitouch LCD, ultra clear hardened and tempered glass, powerful computer, UPS battery backup, cooling cell, and a Bose Audio system all in a clean pedestal table design. The pedestal houses most of the components including the PC and audio system so the table top surface remains thin at only 3 inches thick. The unit measures 31 inches tall to meet ADA (American with Disabilities) requirements.

The integrated PC is a HP system with Intel Quad Core i7 processor, NVIDIA Quadro 600 PCI video card, 4GB RAM, and dual 250GB SATA hard drives. The system runs Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and has a three-year HP warranty. The LED back-lit LCD is rated for 50,000 hours and is protected by a 5mm thick tempered glass. The multitouch overlay supports up to 32 simultaneous touch points.

The table supports WiFi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, USB 2.0, and HDMI output. GestureWorks for Flash and Flex ships with the table to support more than 200 gestures and is the most advanced multitouch SDK available. Pricing information is not yet available.

Behold a chair that explores not only our relationship with light and space, but our relationship with what appears real, and what appears to be so awesome it couldn’t possibly exist. This chair can become basically completely invisible while you’re away from it, but when you approach, it comes to life. Take a peek and explore a fantasy of impossibility.

Constructed of only acrylic, mirror film, LED lights, an ultrasonic sensor, custom electronics, and the code of a brilliant developer, this chair sits silent whilst not in use, but “beats” as if it has a heart as you approach. Also the lights and the mirrors involved create a “black hole” in the bottom of the chair, making those afraid of heights freak out and run. Can you imagine if every piece of furniture in your house were this freaky?

Take a look at the rest of the portfolio of Ben Alun-Jones over at his portfolio – it’s got lots of lights and super fun stuff inside.

The light itself isn’t the color green, but it’s certainly less likely to put you in the poorhouse via electricity bills. This is the Pure Sun lamp designed by Denmark-based Igland Design who’ve billed this object as “a table that doubles as a light source, using only the sun. Well wait a second, couldn’t I just open a window? Yes you do have to open a window. Isn’t the room then already light? Not if you’ve got a small window. This seems difficult. It is!

What this table effectively consists of is a wood base, a plastic or glass cover top, a mirror inside, and two knobs that control the mirror from within. Once you’ve got it sitting by your window, you adjust it according to where you’d like rays of light to bounce, and poof! You’ve got a bit more light in y0ur room.

Shouldn’t it be automatically adjusted though? One of the designers by the name of Dag Igland writes of this bit of furniture: “If the Pure Sun table had a sun-tracking system, it would miss the point. [A]n important part of the idea is that you have to actively dial in the right angles to capture light … and that by doing that, one (hopefully) gains awareness on saving energy.”

If you are getting a new HDTV or 3D TV for Christmas, you might need something to set that TV on for viewing or you might want to mount the thing to the wall. If you do, Sanus has a few new products that might catch your eye. The company has some new basic home theater furnishings including the BFAV344 and the BFAV550 TV stands.

Both of those stands have three shelves for holding your game consoles and all the DVD players and set-top boxes that geeks tend to have in their home theaters. The 344 is a high-gloss black unit with a curved shape on the front that is designed to fit in a corner or on a flat wall. The 550 is a waterfall design which means the thing has no sides to it and comes in a chestnut or chocolate finish.

The stands will support up to 56-inch sets with a weight capacity on the top shelf of 125 pounds. The new stands can be combined with a new no-drill wall mount as well that attached directly to the back of the TV stands and can tilt for the best viewing angle. It will support TVs from 30 to 56-inches that weight up to 125 pounds. The 344 stand sells for $269.99, the 550 is $229.99, and the FMK056 no-drill wall mount is $199.99.

The iPhone’s 3.5-inch display is, at least to Apple, big enough for normal every day usage. And there’s probably hundreds of thousands of folks out there who would agree with that (even if larger screen devices are becomingly increasingly popular), but sometimes you just want to do your photo viewing on something bigger. And not just bigger, but something you can still interact with in the same way you would with your iPhone. Luckily, the 58-inch multitouch table exists, and it’s the real deal.

There are two guys in the video, which you can see in all of its glory below, and they show you just how well the huge “table” works. As you can see, by plugging in the iPhone, and running an application, you can interact with your iPhone right on the table. The gentlemen go through the process of swiping through pages on the Springboard, and even opening up the photos application. The only way to make it work is through the connected cable, as WiFi isn’t supported.

The process is smooth enough, and considering how well it works, there was no doubt that some people out there would cry out that this is all fake. It doesn’t seem to be a fake, but it’s perfectly possible that someone could dupe the world with some work. If it is real though, the translation from the iPhone to the table is great. Check out the video below to see it in action.

There are some out there that would argue that technology has separated us, as it has made it easier for us to talk through our gadgets than face to face. On the other side of the fence, you could argue that at least we’re still talking, and with devices like Apple’s iPad, collaboration can be potentially made a lot easier, too. So, what if we make people sit right next to one another, and put an iPad in front of them? Will collaboration increase? One designer believes it will, and the test is the Salsa Table.

The new design is from designer Bram Boo, and it’s meant to serve as a platform that brings people and ideas together, all while they take in as much media as they can. The newly designed table is able to seat four, all facing different directions, and integrate four iPads as well. It’s easy to turn around in your seat and watch what someone else is doing on their own tablet device, though. The Salsa Table is scheduled to be shown off at the Interieur Biennale in Kortrijk, Belgium. What do you think? Will this help with collaboration? Or just show how distant we can be while sitting so close to one another?

Concept designs are all over the place. And while many of them focus more on the gadget-based area, like an MP3 player, sometimes you find the design concepts that just seem right, even if they aren’t all touchscreen-fused gadgets. This time around, there’s an area in the house that’s getting the concept design treatment: the clothes rack. This is called the Breeze Racks, and it’s a collapsible system that’s meant to not only dry your clothes while you hang them up, but also make them smell good.

The clothes rack, which can be broken down to store away if you need it to, features a blower to dry your clothes, hollow bars and hangars that have a lot of holes in them, and an aroma dispenser. As you might imagine, the Breeze Racks is meant to dry your clothes in a quick amount of time, and apparently the designer intends it to be used for those who live in rain-drenched areas.

Just set the frame where you want it, and then just set up one of the hangers into the holes of the rack. The heated air should blow through the hollow tubes, and then through the holes in the hangars to dry your clothes as they hang in the air. The aroma dispenser will make your clothes smell good when it’s all said and done. The Breeze Racks is built so you can take it around with you — kind of like your umbrella. Anyone think this will take off, and be the next big thing?

If you’ve got extra cable lying around, you might have the inclination to do something with it. But usually it only serves one purpose, so finding something else useful from the extra pieces isn’t all that easy. Unless you’re a designer, tasked with the job of creating something. And then we imagine that it may be pretty simple. This beautiful thing you see hanging above the immaculate dining room is a unique chandelier: it’s manufactured from fiber optic cable and petri dishes.

And, there’s a lot of cable in there. 15,000 feet of fiber optic cable, actually. As for the petri dishes, there’s about 100 of them, adding a little bit more light to the already luminous creation. It definitely looks like the chandelier is coming out of the ceiling, almost as a part of the house. And that’s exactly what the designers from MADLAB were going for. They intended the piece of beautiful architecture to feel like a living piece of the establishment.

The designers also hope that while the chandelier is great in of itself, that the owners of the house will take to different parts of the house, and use for whatever it is they feel they need to use it for. Or, if they just want another area of the house to look awesome, this is one way to make sure of it.

We can now say it’s a phenomenon. After showcasing the iPhone 4 table, and wondering aloud if this was something that would really sweep over the nation (nay, the world), here’s another one of our favorite pieces of technology coming out of the gloom of yester-year, and being transformed into something entirely useful in its own right. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a coffee table built to look exactly like the Nintendo Entertainment System.

There are a few differences from those other pieces of gadget-oriented furniture. First, there’s a video. Also, you can open up the front cartridge door for storage of controllers, remote controls, or the large functioning Nintendo controller that was built, too. There’s also storage in the back, if the front isn’t enough for you. Also, those controller ports on the front? Those are functioning power outlets that the designer, Matt, uses to charge things like his laptop.

We were skeptical at first, but now we’ve got to admit that we like this new phase of Do-It-Yourself goodness. Anything that can put our favorite gadgets into the realm of furniture, and make it look absolutely ridiculously cool at the same time gets our seal of approval. And, for the record, an NES coffee table might earn two, just by default.

We can’t really say for sure when, but at some point someone gave the go-ahead for gadgets to be made into tables (or, what makes them tick). We understand that you want to show off how awesome your favorite gadget is, but there’s got to be a better way. That didn’t stop this designer from making the iPhone 4, the latest iPhone from Apple, into a centerpiece that all of his friends would be jealous of.

Unlike most of the other gadget-centric tables out there, this one’s not for sale. And, you shouldn’t expect to see it in your favorite store any time soon. But, you can make it yourself. The designer has mentioned that they will make the plans “public” soon enough, but for now they seem to be keeping it to themselves. It certainly does have a striking resemblance to the iPhone 4, doesn’t it? That is a lot of glass up there. And hey, it’s not nearly as imposing (or as bad) as the PlayStation controller table, is it?

Design concepts are at times weird and at times interesting. This new design concept is a bit of both bringing cloud storage into the real world. The little shelves are called Shelf Cumulus and they look like puffy white clouds.

The shelves were designed by Carl Hager and are made from metal that is painted white with two holes in the side that sits against the wall. Those holes allow you to mount the shelves to store your stuff.

Those shelves would be pretty cool in an office or a kid’s room and you could store your DVD collection on the cloud and mean it literally. The things sell for £950 and it’s not clear if that is for the set of three pictured or for one shelf. At that price it had better be for three of them.

You almost need an engineering degree to figure out exactly how the assembly process goes and you need several tools along with some glue to build the stuff.

Sceptre has been making some cool and interesting TVs for a while now and the company has announced a new line of entertainment centers and TV stand furniture that is the unassembled style, but needs no tools for the assembly. The line includes the Oracle, Stello, and Delano. They are sized differently and are intended for different size TVs. The real news here is the way the TV stands are put together by the user though.

The stuff has an accordion style design that unfolds and it appears that shelves and cross section give the stand its shape. You can see the construction process in the video below. The promise is that you can have the entertainment center out of the box and constructed in only a few minutes. The line will launch next month with prices from $299 to $499.

If I had a retro gaming room, this would totally be the couch I would play games on. We don’t have many details on the thing. It looks like it is made from cubes to keep the pixel art theme going.

I can’t tell if the sitting surface is hard plastic or cushioned. All we really need to know is that the couch is cool as hell and how often can you say that about a couch?

The cool part is that the wire doesn’t give the table all the support it needs. The cubes are mostly held in place by magnetism. I guess the wires are there to keep the magnetic blocks from moving around and crashing the whole thing when someone leans on it.

The downside to a table like this is that if you spill a drink the clean up would be a nightmare. That and I would hate to sit my notebook on a tablet that bloats thanks to the power of magnets.

If you want something cool to do with all that old hardware, the circuit board table is the perfect way to show off your geekiness.

The table is actually built from two tables. The inner table holds all the circuit boards you see inside the glass and wood outer table. Everything on the inside is visible thanks to lighting around the edges of the table.

The components inside the table are from an old Intergraph 6000 computer that was the first computer the builder of the table owned. Other than the parts from that first computer are components from other tech devices and parts from old 2800 baud modems.

Designer Seongyong Lee has started designing furniture that reuses this sort of very ridged tube that is often used for mailing things like posters and more. The furniture is very nice looking with wood tops and seats that are finished in different colors.

You have to look hard to see that the furnishings are made from paper tubes. The finished stools look just like they were made from normal wooden poles. This is very green furniture since it reuses stuff that would likely just be thrown away.

Design concepts range from mild to wild and sometimes a good concept takes something as boring as shelves for holding your junk and turns them into something cool. The Imeuble shelves from designer Bjorn Jorund Blikstad give me a headache and freak my eyes out.

When you look at the shelves they appeal to be flat and sideways at once, creating an optical illusion that might make your eyes cross. The odd shelves can actually hold stuff, albeit at a very strange angle.

It looks as though the concept uses individual octagon sections that can be made into different patterns to suit a room. I can certainly see these things selling well if they ever came to market. I would also think a DIY type with some wood working ability could build their own version.

The Champ couch for campeggi furniture is made specifically for fighting though. It looks like a rather modern couch when the articulating arm on the rear is in the down position acting as the back rest. When you get the need to put a beat down on someone you can stand the arm upright.

The padded round back becomes a punching bag that you can kung fu out on. The small little couch seems like it would tip over easy if you kicked the thing Rampage style. There is no word on pricing or availability on the couch at this time and it looks more like a concept to me.

I have two kids and both are years outside the baby bed today. I can remember putting the beds for them both together only to toss them out in a few years when they learned to scale the side of the bed. Andensen Furniture has a new design concept that is perfect for the new parents looking to get some mileage out of their furniture.

The Smart Kid furniture starts out as your average crib with drawers under and beside the crib. You need lots of storage for diapers and maybe extra clothes for you until you learn to dodge the urine stream if you have a boy. My son always held a bit back to use the instant the wiener hit air.

Once the baby is too old for a crib, the whole thing can be transformed into a variety of other useful devices for an older kid’s room. The setup can turn into a toddler bed with a desk and a green thingy that appears to be Velcro. It can also turn into one of those baby jail cells for when you need some time without chasing a toddler. Kid Smart has to be the coolest baby furniture ever.

If you eyed up the flexible spine of the Herman Miller Setu earlier this week and thought “nice, but I’d like more rotational combination of axial forwards, backwards and sideways movements” then you’re obviously bizarrely well-read on ergonomic seating and probably already know what we’re about to say. If, however, you know little about pivotal sections but would just like to sit for a few hours without ending up stiff, then Wilkhahn’s ON chair may be the answer. Unlike regular task chairs, which mainly permit forward/backward movement, ON has an artificial hip-joint with “two swing plates that are just as supple as thighs”.

Supple thighs or otherwise, Wilkhahn claim the ON’s movements follow those of your own knees and hips, tracking the body’s center of gravity and supporting you as you lean in any direction. Best of all, there’s minimal setup to be fathomed: two buttons and your ON chair is set up.

Of course there’s no replacement for going down to your local chair emporium and trying a few out, but with more people spending the majority of their days desk-bound we won’t argue with something that promises less strain and more comfort. The Wilkhahn ON is available now, priced from €569 ($848) plus tax.

Press Release:

New concept to combat back pain: office chair ON teaches seating to walk

After five years in development and with four decades of expertise in dynamic seating, German office furniture manufacturer Wilkhahn is presenting the world premiere of a unique office chair concept. A chair that gives our bodies the freedom to sit the way they want and can. At the core of the innovative office chair lies Trimension®, a mechanism that precisely follows the positions, functions and scope of movement in the knee and hip joints. As a result, sitting does not cause fatigue and assured movement is encouraged. Just like when we walk about. The Centre of Health confirms that the chair activates the entire metabolic system, making office work more healthy and productive.

Scientists, healthcare professionals and ergonomists have long been advocating as frequent changes of posture as possible. The goal is to combat back pain which is now the number one medical complaint. Recent scientific studies, such as those produced by the Centre for Health at the renowned German Sport University Cologne, cite a permanent lack of physical stimulation and exercise as the main cause of virtually all illnesses in the modern world. Extensive studies carried out by the Bertelsmann Stiftung underscore these findings. Prevention-based therapies even prolong back pain, because instead of activating they switch off the body’s natural regulation mechanisms. Millions of people worldwide are then caught in a vicious circle. Back pain occurs because we do not take enough exercise. We then take preventative measures because of the back pain. This in turn hampers the metabolism, makes the situation worse and leads to degeneration in our bodies.

Forced postures and a philosophy of prosthetics in the office
Back pain is becoming a progressively worse problem for office workers. And this comes as no surprise. Thanks to computer technology, the only exercise we take at our desks is typing on keyboards or using a mouse. Nowadays, the majority of filing is also done electronically, without even having to leave our desks. If we want to maintain our concentration and work on the computer using digital (from the Latin for digitus = finger) fine motor skills, pressure on the body needs to be relieved. We often sit for hours at the computer without a break. This forced posture has catastrophic results. By sitting still, our muscles are forced into a posture which in turn leads to disruptions in our metabolism, ill-health and strain. As a result, for many decades office chairs have been developed with diverse adjustment mechanisms that aim to counteract the consequences of sitting still. However, the increase in ill-health shows that this philosophy of prosthetics removes the body’s natural inclinations to move about. And the problem gets worse instead of better. Today we know that any physical skills that are not activated degenerate. Activating and stimulating concepts are required, not the opposite. So body and mind are in top form – and both employers and their workforce benefit.

Away from two-dimensional movement towards natural freedom of movement
Prevalent office chair concepts limit freedom of movement to leaning backwards and forwards. When developing ON, the goal was therefore to achieve the natural freedom of movement advocated by the experts. In addition to flexing and stretching the back, three-dimensional flexibility of the hip joints is the key to stimulating the elasticity of the spine, the shoulder joints, as well as the back and neck muscles. The aim is not just to provide for axial forwards, backwards and sideways movements, but to combine these as rotational movements. Over a five-year period, Wilkhahn engineers developed Trimension® with this goal in mind. It consists of the integrated interaction of two swing plates that are just as supple as thighs, with an extremely flexible seat and backrest design (Flexframe®). The pivotal sections’ positions and movement follow the knee and hip joints. Consequently, it goes without saying that a completely natural flow of movement is encouraged that becomes a matter of course. The chair follows and supports the body in any movement it makes, the body’s centre of gravity automatically remains between the swivel sections and therefore in perfect balance. Prof. Ingo Froböse from the Centre for Health accompanied and verified the development procedure. “This office chair stimulates a new range of natural postures and movement in seating that activates the entire body. You could say that ON teaches seating how to walk”.

Design and ease of use as a new dimension in health
Recent preventative healthcare studies indicate that the design of a chair also has a direct impact on people’s feeling of well-being. Seating contraptions that resemble medical equipment, tend to hamper a proactive, intuitive and natural approach to the way we control our bodies. Incorporating sitting problems into the design of the chair becomes part of the problem. So ON’s design fully embraces the new sense of freedom to sit how we want. This new dimension in seating becomes a matter of course. Together with design company wiege, the movement functions were incorporated into the design in the simplest conceivable way. ON offers clarity and space and you could almost imagine it in your own home. ON immediately conveys trust, assurance, value and comfort. Form follows simple and intuitive handling. By pressing just two buttons and the integrated rapid counterpressure adjustment, the office chair is immediately ready to go. Your body and the chair will do the rest, so that you can keep your mind on the job.

New seating: from the home office to the executive environment
The wide range of models with three backrest heights and three types of upholstery provides office chairs for the home office to the luxury executive chair. A variety of upholstery options complements any interior design.

The longstanding and painstaking development process led to a very high quality, but technically simple solution. Combined with state-of-the art design and manufacturing processes, we have created a chair that is exceptionally good value. The list price for the basic model is 569 EUR plus VAT – including everything that is synonymous with the new dimension in seating. So there are many reasons why ON is set to become a new milestone in healthy seating.

Like any geek who spends more time on their hiney than in sunlight, we’ve a soft spot for high-priced ergonomic furniture, and when it comes to such things the inescapable name is Herman Miller. Father of the classic Aeron and the bizarrely-beehive-like Embody, they also have more affordable options such as the Setu. Nearly half the price of an Aeron, it’s billed (almost) as Herman Miller’s sop to the masses, and Core77 have not only reviewed it but caught up with the team responsible for its manufacture.

Manufacturing overview video after the cut

Unlike the seemingly dozens of controls you’ll find on an Embody, the Setu leaves most of the adjustments to its ergonomically-curved, flexible back. Herman Miller call this a”kinematic spine”, and Core77 found it works well to support movement without being too “insistent”. Meanwhile the mesh fabric is both breathable, reluctant to pick up dust and supports the user well.

Perhaps the best thing about the Setu is that it removes any “who moved my chair?!” office arguments; with the seating responsible for its own adjustment, rather than the user, it’s ideal for hot-seating. Core77 certainly seem convinced, and while $579 isn’t small change, compared to the $1,199 upwards of the Embody it starts to look like something of a bargain.

It’s hard to find a single screengrab to illustrate this great video of craftsman Brian Grabski‘s work-in-progress furniture: that’s because it hides a fiendishly clever mechanism by which you can open a secret drawer. The hand-crafted chest-of-drawers demands you pull open each of the visible drawers, before a hidden control springs out and allows you to trigger the secret compartment built into what looks like a normal molding.

Video demo after the cut

To make things more complex, each of the drawers must be pulled out to a certain point before the latches they control slide out of the way, similar to how the pins in a regular lock work. That finally allows a length of wooden dowel to slide out – hidden, normally, as a knot in the wood itself – and when you twist it and then push it back in, a cable tracked around the back of the cabinet allows the hidden drawer to spring out.

So far there’s no sign of the finished product on Grabski’s site, but from looking through the rest of his gallery we’ve no reason to believe it isn’t going to end up looking brilliant. Sadly we don’t think we can afford to commission him ourselves.

The fighter jet seat, above, comes from an F-4, while there’s also a B-52 model that, as you might guess, comes from the bomber. Ergonomically they lack a few of the accepted niceties – such as usable arm-rests – but Motoart do also offer a C-130 Navigator’s chair which is a whole lot more adjustable.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, prices for the chairs are by-application only, and given Motoart say they’re all limited-edition you’re probably looking at something in excess of a Herman-Miller Aeron. The company also makes aeronautical desks and other furniture.

The SmartFaucet heats up the water itself, using an internal heating coil, and because of that has far greater control over temperature than normal mixer taps. It also means it can use face-recognition to recall your family’s temperature and flow presets, leaving your hands free to load up GMail

Meanwhile LEDs in the spout light up to show water temperature, ranging from cold blue to skin-scalding red. Unsurprisingly there’s no word on price, but we’re expecting this to be possibly the most expensive faucet around.

In an ideal world, this would be a jet-propelled butt-cradle. However it’s not, it’s actually a combination chair and music system by designer Gianni Pedone, part of the Morfonauta collection going on show at Milan Design Week 2009.

Audio is provided by an integrated CD/MP3 player, with speakers hidden in the arms of the “Morfojet” chair. According to the designer-speak description, the chair “alludes to some aerodynamic shapes” and prepares us for “a ghostly journey through the world of music and video.”

Personally, it just reminds me how much I want a personal jetpack, but I suppose I could find lounge-space for the Morfojet in the meantime. Sadly it’s a case of “price on application”, which usually means it’s well out of the price range of a humble blogger.

It’s almost the weekend, which means only one thing: a desperate race to find an all-consuming project lest one be found for you by your nearest-and-dearest. You could do a lot worse than put together a Shopping Cart Go-Cart, the entertaining end-result of MAKE’s shopping cart chair tutorial.

Video demo after the cut

Even if you’re not planning on recycling an old shopping cart into a new piece of furniture (or a motorized cart to terrorize the local kids in), it’s a useful tutorial in how to cut, bend, and shape metal using metal cutters, saws, vice grips, and other tools common to home workshops. Obviously we’d join with MAKE in suggesting that you use an old, expired shopping cart rather than “permanently borrowing” one from your local market.

I’m not entirely sure that I appreciate the aesthetics of the cart-chair to give it room in my lounge, but I could certainly imagine its motorized cousin in my garage. Well, that is, if I had a garage; perhaps building one of those should be my first weekend project.

As multifunctional furniture goes, designer Michiel van de Kley’s intent with Globus – to create a swivel chair and desk when open, and something that “evokes curiosity” when closed – certainly isn’t in keeping with the must-do-everything convergence ethos. However we’ll forgive it because it’s so darned lovely. A moulded plastic globe with a cast aluminum base on casters, the portable workstation automatically locks its wheels when opened, revealing a swivel chair and height-adjustable desk.

Going by some of the images in the gallery below, the Globus can be specified with different desk levels – that way you can play chess or pull out your computer keyboard. It’s intended both for office and home use, though at 1.4m wide and just over a meter high, you’ll need a fair amount of space to keep it, and has been developed by Lande Productie Schijndel BV in The Netherlands for Artifort and Gispen.

The Globus is, unlike many workstation concepts we see here at SlashGear, commercially available. You can have your pick of base and globe colors, together with a choice of seat fabrics. Sadly it’s price-on-application, which usually translates to “very expensive”.

The Sonic Chair Touch features the same built-in speakers and input jacks that we have grown accustom to with the addition of a computer that is quickly growing in popularity.

Now users will not only get great bass and focused acoustics thanks to the integrated noise cancellation technology, but you can surf the web to. Today’s chairs just seem to be going the extra mile for us recently. The 20-inch touchscreen iMac features a 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB memory and 250GB hard drive, 8 x SuperDrive and ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT graphics.

This chair remains a luxury item with the top-grade leather and sueded microfiber lining on the inside. We really don’t know what to think about the “touchscreen iMac.” Originally we figured this was a typo, but including Touch in the name of the chair throws us for a loop. It also seems odd that there is not a purchase price for this particular model, which also may point to a problem getting a device that is nonexistent. It will be very interesting if they do intact produce this chair.

Anti-skid feet prevent the whole thing from shooting away across your polished floors, while a removable tripod leg prevents it from toppling backward. The joints have been designed with varying resistance, so you don’t slam into the extremes of flexibility.

Currently it’s designed for kids aged between seven and twelve, as long as they weigh under 175lbs. No word on price, but it should be available in the “near future”. We’d like to see an adult version, please!
