Dead Trigger hits 1 million iOS downloads after free-to-play switch

Earlier this week, Madfinger made its mobile FPS Dead Trigger free-to-play on the iOS App Store. That iOS transition came after and earlier switch to free-to-play on Android, with Madfinger saying that the piracy rate on Android was just too great. It seems that piracy was driving the decision to go free-to-play on iOS as well, but whatever the reason, the switch appears to have worked: Dead Trigger has hit 1 million downloads on iOS, just a few days after going free-to-play. Pachter: The Old Republic could net 50m players with free-to-play switch

Yesterday, Electronic Arts surprised absolutely no one by announcing that Star Wars: The Old Republic will be going free-to-play later this year. Wedbush Securities thinks that this is a great idea, and is encouraging investors to buy up stock in EA while they can still get in at a decent price. GamesIndustry International reports that EA's stock currently sits at $11.68 per share, but Wedbush gives the company a twelve-month target of $29. Read The Full Story

We all knew it was going to happen eventually, but today BioWare and Electronic Arts made it official: Star Wars: The Old Republic is going free-to-play. It seems that the Star Wars label and the BioWare name just weren't enough to get the necessary amount of people to subscribe, so now the companies will see if a switch to free-to-play will provide a boost to user numbers and revenues. FreedomPop to add LTE by the end of the year

Pre-orders for FreedomPop’s WiMAX iPhone case began in May with the company offering 500MB of free data for those willing to pay $99 for the case. The company is hoping to shift free customers onto a paid model later on, but for now is offering the data for free. The case makes use of ClearWire’s WiMAX, but GigaOm reports that FreedomPop will be leveraging LTE in the future. Read The Full Story

This has certainly been an epic week for role playing games, this free-to-play announcement for EverQuest by Sony Online Entertainment entering the ranks with both Diablo III and the refresh of Baldur's Gate. I suppose these gaming companies think it's time to bump up the ol' gaming engines now that summer is approaching - wouldn't want to get a tan this year, would we?! The game EverQuest has seen 13 years of gameplay and a total of 18 expansions to its basic build, and this is the first time its ever had a free model, it now having a total of three - this plus Silver ($5.00/mo) and Gold ($14.99/mo) memberships. The massively multiplayer online first-person shooter (MMOFPS) game Dust 514, which is slated to be available exclusively on PS3, will be a completely free-to-play affair. Game maker CCP had originally planned to charge a nominal price for gamers to download the title from the PlayStation Store, but that plan has been scrapped because, CCP says, it didn't want to confuse gamers.
