Activision and Bungee have revealed the details of its upcoming “shared-world shooter”, Destiny, that is anticipated to shake up the online gaming industry when it launches. The game has a 10-year publishing deal with Activision, and will be released in a series of 10 “books”. However, with all of the hype centering around Destiny, we can’t forget about Activision’s other successful online shooter, Call of Duty. Eric Hirshberg, Activision’s CEO, had an interview with Digital Trends and comments on the FPS juggernaut’s future.

When asked about the extended longevity the COD games now have, Hirshberg doesn’t seem too scared of possible profit depletion. He says that the game has found the right supply and demand for new content for the Call of Duty community. Players are able to play the same game for longer times, and Activision and Treyarch are able to keep their profits up and keep players hooked by selling DLC packs.

Commenting on whether or not Call of Duty will ever be made into a movie, Hirshberg stated that Activision has been approached several times by a variety of companies to turn Call of Duty into a movie. Activision’s primary business, however, is making games and they don’t want to jeopardize that in the “pursuit of making movies”. Hirshberg did hint that if they do dabble in movies, “it’s going to be with the right partners, and at the right time, and for the right reason.”

Hirshberg also commented on their big investment in the free-to-play gaming space. Activision released Call of Duty free-to-play in China, which drew in “tens of millions” of gamers to its gaming franchise. He says that the free-to-play space is something the company is doing on a “case by case basis” and they’re still learning more about it. Hirshberg says that they will implement more free-to-play investments “where we think it’s appropriate”.

It’s time to jump in on one of the most impressive mech-based first person shooters to have come along for quite a while – Hawken – released for Beta gameplay for the masses this week. This game is developed by Adhesive Games and published by Meteor Entertainment, designed by Khang Le, Christopher Lalli, and John Park, and based in the Unreal Engine 3 universe. In a nutshell it’s a battle game where you’re in a giant one-person machine that blows up other machines for fun – simple concept, fabulous execution.

The set of multiplayer modes you’re working with here in [free beta mode] is currently set at 4 – two basic modes, a Missle Assult mode and a Siege mode. The first two modes are Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch with experience given based on accomplishments through your battle against either your opponent’s team or every single other player in the game. Missle Assult mode has you capturing a set of three missle silos and defending them until they destroy the enemy team’s base.

But it’s really all about the Siege mode when it comes down to it. This undeniably fantastic bit of gameplay is still in Alpha Mode – that being an alpha mode in a beta game, certainly not guaranteed to have a perfect gameplay experience by any means – but, spoiler, it really is rather top-notch even here in its early public stages. In Seige mode your goal is to collect enemy energy units that will launch a battleship for you that’ll move ever-so-gradually toward your enemy’s base.

When your ship is launched, you control the anti-air to attack your enemy’s ships and protect your own ship until your ship has reached its goal – and the enemy is massacred. This and the rest of the modes all exist in a fantastic set of environments the likes of which we’ve only otherwise seen in the highest quality first-person-shooters for high-powered PCs in the past. That and Total Recall or Blade Runner – and the detail is surprisingly deep.

NOTE: It should be made clear here that we’re using an Intel Core i7 Ivy Bridge NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M packing Alienware M17x R4 gaming notebook to play this game – we’ve not yet tested the game with much lesser machines than that.

Gameplay controls are rather standard and extremely responsive – WASD and Shift-hold to dart one way or the other, holding down the space bar makes you take off and fly, and holding down the letter C sits your mech down so your back-up helper bot can fly around and repair your broken bits. Communication between players online seems to be up to par as far as both microphone chat and on-screen type, and we’ve experienced no noticeable (or otherwise bothersome) lag in any respect and load-times have been, again, surprisingly quick.

If this game as excellent or better than we’ve seen here in Beta, we’re more than pumped up for the final release. Have a peek at the last time we spoke about the producers of this game and see why we’re pumped up about their hard-hitting future as well. Get ready to be smashed!

Back in September, we got our first glimpse at Gameloft’s latest mobile FPS title, Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour, in the form of a trailer. Needless to say, we were pretty excited about it, and finally, Gameloft has announced that the new game will be releasing this Thursday, December 6, on iOS, while Android devices will get it “shortly after.”

Gameloft confirmed the news on Twitter, and we’re not really sure why the Android version is getting delayed, nor do we know when it will eventually be released. We’re guessing only a couple days after the iOS release, but it’s all a guessing game so far. Either way, after months of waiting, we finally know when the new title will be out.

Gameloft’s Modern Combat series has always been the closest alternative to games like Call of Duty, but on Android and iOS. The first three installments of Modern Combat have been some of the best first-person shooter games to reach mobile devices, and the fourth sequel promises to be even greater, with “exceptional graphics, a AAA campaign and a greatly-improved multiplayer mode.”

Of course, the release of Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour will see some heavy competition starting right on release day, since that will be the same day that Grand Theft Auto: Vice City releases. Coincidence? Maybe, but the biggest problem is which game to play first once Thursday rolls around. It’ll be a tough choice.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified isn’t the only console spin-off that will be exclusive to the PS Vita, as Sony‘s Gamescom press conference also treated us to the announcement of Killzone: Mercenary. Like most spin-offs, Killzone: Mercenary will be quite a bit different from the core Killzone franchise, as this time around you’ll be playing as – surprise! – a mercenary working with both the Helghast and the ISA. This marks the first time in Killzone history that you’ll be working alongside the Helghast (at least sometimes), so get excited Vita owners.

The game was announced with the short trailer you see posted below. Half live action and half gameplay, the trailer gives us our first look at Killzone: Mercenary on the PS Vita. The graphics actually look excellent (especially for a handheld game), but that’s because the folks at Guerrilla Games are working on this entry as well. That’s right, the development duties haven’t been handed off for this particular spin-off, so we don’t have to worry about an unknown studio making a sub-par game in the Killzone franchise.

Not only that, but Mercenary is being made with the Killzone 3 engine, which is why the visuals look so good. With Guerrilla Games developing the title and using the Killzone 3 engine to do so, this might just turn out to be the high-profile, console-quality game the PS Vita needs. Check out the announcement trailer below.

Killzone: Mercenary is scheduled to launch at some point next year, but other than that, details are still pretty scarce. Sony promises that more details will be shared soon, so hopefully it won’t be too much longer before more information arrives. Keep it tuned to SlashGear for more details on Killzone: Mercenary!

Earlier this week, Madfinger made its mobile FPS Dead Trigger free-to-play on the iOS App Store. That iOS transition came after and earlier switch to free-to-play on Android, with Madfinger saying that the piracy rate on Android was just too great. It seems that piracy was driving the decision to go free-to-play on iOS as well, but whatever the reason, the switch appears to have worked: Dead Trigger has hit 1 million downloads on iOS, just a few days after going free-to-play.

Madfinger announced the milestone on its Twitter account today, but it’s unclear whether this 1 million figure includes the number of purchases that took place before the free-to-play transition. Either way, 1 million downloads is still a substantial amount, especially for a small indie developer like Madfinger.

Of course, it isn’t very surprising that Dead Trigger has hit 1 million downloads. It’s a flashy FPS, and Madfinger got quite a bit of publicity when it announced that the game was going free-to-play on Android due to rampant piracy. The studio got even more attention when the game mysteriously went free-to-play on iOS, so it was the perfect combination of publicity, controversy, and the word “free” that propelled Dead Trigger to this 1 million milestone.

Madfinger has yet to divulge any Android download numbers, so perhaps it’s safe to assume Dead Trigger isn’t doing as well on Android as it is on iOS? Even if that’s the case, we imagine Madfinger is experiencing a sizable boost in Android numbers, so it seems that the switch to free-to-play was once again a winning decision. Now that the game has gone free-to-play, those who actually paid for the title will be getting a gift of 25 gold and 10 casino chips with the next update, and that bonus appears to be coming to players on all platforms. Keep it tuned to SlashGear – we’ll be sure to update you if Madfinger shares any additional details about Dead Trigger‘s newfound success!

If you’ve played Halo, Modern Warfare or Team Fortress in the last week, take a moment to thank id Software. Twenty years ago last Saturday they published Wolfenstein 3D, forever placing a mark on first-person shooter gaming and giving a whole new generation good reason to hate Nazis. Bethesda Softworks, id’s current owner and publisher, is celebrating by making the iOS game free for today (Wednesday) only, and publishing a free browser-based version for everyone.

Wolfenstein 3D debuted on Microsoft DOS, where its astonishingly fast and fluid shooter gameplay (for the time of course) made it an instant hit. The story followed an Allied soldier entering a German castle, discovering an army of zombies and eventually defeating both the undead and the Führer. id Software went on to make games based on the same engine and style, including the Doom and Quake series. Wolfenstein 3D was eventually ported to dozens of platforms, including the Super NES, Mac, Xbox Live, and Steam.

To take advantage of this deal, point your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad to the iTunes App Store and the Wolfenstein 3D listing. (Sorry, Android users – a few unlicensed ports of Wolfenstein exist, but Bethesda hasn’t published an official version and had the free ports removed from the Android Market in 2009.) Make sure and download it today – tomorrow it goes back to its regular $1.99 price tag. Everyone else can play the full game in any modern desktop web browser at wolfenstein.bethsoft.com.

This week the folks responsible for promoting the oncoming release of the first person shooter known as Borderlands 2 have done one spectacular job with a preview video that’s about to smack you right in your collective faces. In this epic three minute and three second trailer you’ll find yourself dipped in a world of ultra-detailed action across flat surfaces splooged across an environment where you get a “bazillion” guns and action so hot you might as well play naked. In addition, this trailer lets loose information of a pre-order club called Borderlands 2 Premiere Club that includes several exclusive items you cannot get anywhere else!

This Premiere Club includes a Gearbox Gunpack, a Vault Hunter’s Relic, and your very own Golden Key! What more could you want?! This game comes out on the 18th of September and will be one of the most epic games you’ve ever played in your life. You’ll be able to roll around on foot destroying your human-sized or gigantic robot-sized enemies, grab hundreds of different weapons and upgrade them accordingly, or just blast through the nightmare in your very own dune buggy.
