Foxconn freezes production after 2,000-strong brawl

Foxconn has frozen production at a Chinese facility after violence broke out and eventually escalated to involve around 2,000 workers, requiring police intervention to settle the dispute. Approximately 40 people were injured after what Foxconn describes as a "personal dispute" snowballed at the Taiyuan plant, the BBC reports, with Chinese state media claiming it had been "triggered by a conflict" involving workers and a restaurant owner.

The iPhone 5 won't technically arrive until the end of the week, but some who pre-ordered the new device have already received confirmation that their handset has shipped. A few readers of 9to5Mac have sent in emails showing that their iPhone 5s shipped from Zhengzhou, China yesterday. Infamous Apple supplier Foxconn has a factory not too far from there, so it seems that the company has been hard at work getting Apple's newest iDevice out the door.

Manufacturer Foxconn has again come in for criticism after an undercover reporter described dire working conditions in one Chinese facility, with the OEM promising an immediate investigation into the claims. The report by the Shanghai Evening Post (translated by M.I.C. Gadget) revealed unhygienic dormitories, poorly maintained leisure facilities, and frantic overtime as Foxconn pushed to produce sufficient iPhone 5 units to meet expected demand, with workers subjected to strict punishments for dropping the pace.

Apple supplier Foxconn gets positive FLA progress report

The Apple supplier in China known as Foxconn has been the subject of study for safety over the past few months under the watchful eye of the FLA - today they report that the factory line is doing quite well. The Fair Labor Association has reported that more than 280 action items completed on time or ahead of schedule, while 76 will be due through July 2013. Over the course of the next year, Foxconn will need to establish that they've completed the remaining 76 items and the FLA is confident that they will do so.
