I think we all knew that the iPhone 4S was going to be a seriously popular device when it finally launched after all of the rumors and frenzy surround the device leading up to that launch day. Flickr has a camera finder page that keeps track of the most popular cameras used on the service are. It’s no surprise that before the iPhone 4S launched, the iPhone 4 was the most popular camera.

The iPhone 4 is still at the top of the list, but before the 4S camera around the iPhone 3G was the second most popular camera. Shortly after the launch of the iPhone 4S, the 3G dropped quickly and the iPhone 4S camera took the second most popular spot.

It’s interesting that out of the top five cameras on the service, four of them are the iPhone. The only non-iPhone on the list is the HTC Evo 4G in last place. The iPhone 3GS is the fourth place device, the iPhone 3G is third, with the 4S in second and the iPhone 4 in first. The 4S is a long way from the iPhone 4 in popularity though.

Popular photo-sharing service Flickr has finally released its first official Android app, two years after it launched its iOS app. Android users who’ve had to resort to third-party alternatives will now get a slick new Flickr app that allows them to easily upload and share images taken with the in-app camera and enhanced with various filters. Along with the Android app, Flickr is also releasing a new Photo Sessions feature for its iPhone and iPad app.

The Android Flickr app features a built-in camera interface that has adjustable settings for auto-focus and flash. Photos taken can be enhanced by using any of the ten filters and effects available. The images can then be uploaded to a Flickr account, shared via Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, or email. The app is free and available through the Android Market.

The Photo Sessions feature for Flickr’s iPhone and iPad app, adds the ability to flip through a gallery of photos with a friend like you’re sitting next to each other even if you’re actually across the globe. For details on the new feature, you can watch the video below.

There are certain statistics every good camera or camera-toting device group pays attention to, one of the more unassumingly important set of these being on Flickr’s own most popular cameras page. This page is an extremely simplistic look at which devices are attached to photos the most often in the Flickr community, graphs broken down into Point & Shoot, Cameraphones, and the cross-breed Most Popular Cameras overall over the past year of Flickr action. What we’re seeing today is that longstanding king of Flicker photos, the Nikon D90, has been ousted and replaced by the rapidly growing iPhone.

This is the first time (in recent history at least) that a smartphone has taken the top spot from the Cannons and Nikons of the world, a wakeup call for the point and shoot / DSLR / every camera-only device in the world to be sure. When you take a look at the Popular Point & Shoot Cameras chart you’ll notice that not only are they ALL Canons, they’re all evening out, this chart (and the others) showing the % of members on the site. This means that the cameras being used by members of the photo-centric site are fragmenting, while what these other charts are showing us is that Apple and their tight relegation of models of devices, (aka one smartphone to rule them all: iPhone,) is more than a powerful message to the rest of the non-smartphone handheld device world.

Finally, if you take a look at the Popular Cameraphones category, you’ll see that the iPhone 3G has been dominating for as long as this graph represents, while the iPhone 3GS follows a very similar path to the Android device HTC Evo 4G and the iPod touch creeps up the bottom. Then there’s the iPhone 4 which near the beginning of the graph directly counter-acts the path of the iPhone 3G and takes over by a long-shot by the time the present rolls around.

It’s important to note the “about these graphs” section on this page which includes word that the graphs can only be read as accurate to the point at which you note that Flickr can automatically detect the camera used to take the photos or videos uploaded to the site, this being only about 2/3rds of the time, or so they say. This situation gives an unfair advantage to all non-cameraphone devices as it’s “not usually possible” to detect the make of cameraphones with the method Flickr uses, so you might want to think about such a thing like this: you need a combination of being able to be read by Flickr as a device model name and actually being popular to overtake these graphs, and Apple‘s got that combo in the bag!

Appeasing complaints of not having a camera on the original iPad and trying to keep pace with rising competition, Apple slapped on both front-facing and back-facing cameras to their iPad 2s. But how many people actually use the iPad 2 for taking pictures?

That’s the question the folks at ElectricPig were asking when they dug into Flickr’s current daily average user stats. It turns out that of the 40 million Flickr users, only 22 of them use their iPad 2 cameras. That makes the iPad 2 about 200 times less popular than the iPhone 4, which is being used by 4,391 Flickr members.

However, of the 22 iPad 2 camera users, they’ve managed to upload 12,570 images altogether, which seems pretty impressive. The size of the device does make it less wieldy, but the disappointing camera quality may be another contributing factor to its lack of usage. If you tote around an iPad 2, how are you liking the camera?

Well would you take a look at that! What we’ve got here is nothing less than a full roadmap of the more important software updates planned by RIM for their BlackBerry platform. Inside you’ll see several versions of Facebook, Social Feeds, Flickr, Twitter, and even the next big fat version of BlackBerry OS: QNX, more than likely OS 7.0! In addition to the roadmap you see directly below this paragraph, we’ve got a few more one-sheets including a “BlackBerry News,” one for Ticketmaster v2.0, and another for Social Feeds. All of these items come courtesy of our friends at n4bb.

Inside 2011 if these maps and documents are true, we’ll be seeing BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) 4.0 around March or April and BIS 4.1 starting in August or September. Next, take a peek at how BlackBerry fans can look forward to Facebook 2.0 beta 1 and beta 2 coming as soon as February, and Twitter 1.1 between March and June, and an End of Life (EOL) for Viigo in August and Flickr in February — note, this has already happened. App World for BlackBerry PlayBook will be released in March, BlackBerry Protect 1.1 and 1.2 will be updated in March and May, Identity Service v1.2 in March, and Social Feeds 2.0 for OS 6.1 in late April.

After that you’ll see integration of BlackBerry OS 7.0 starting near the end of November 2011. At the moment we have basically no idea whether 7.0 will be an update of 6.1 or if it’ll only be rolled out on brand new devices near the end of the year with updates to older devices coming throughout 2012. The word “Integration” is included in the update block – does this point toward the OS still being in a developmental state at that block’s time, or does Integration mean working the OS into already released devices?

Take a look in the gallery below for a slightly larger-sized version of the map as well as a few sheets on other similar topics.

Google announced today an update to their Google Social Search feature that will more fully integrate the social search results into normal search results. Now when you view a search results page, you might also see little annotations under the results that have either been shared or liked by your friends. In fact, your friends’ sharing and linking activities may actually affect your search results.

Google’s Social Search was launched back in 2009, but the social search results were placed way down at the bottom of the page and mainly showed results that people created and linked through their Google profiles. But now they are fully incorporating results from social sites such as Twitter, Flickr, and YouTube.

And more interesting is that if someone you’re connected to has publicly shared a link, then that link may show up higher in your results and an annotation of that person will show up right below the result. The company says that, “With these changes, we want to help you find the most relevant information possible, personalized to your interests and the people you care about.”

Google’s Social Search only works when you are logged into your Google Account. And this new update will start rolling out today in English only. You should start seeing the results within this coming week.

For a more in-depth explanation, watch Google’s Social Search video:

Research In Motion (RIM) just announced on their website today that they would be discontinuing support for the Flickr Uploader on their BlackBerry smartphones starting on March 1, 2011. The app allowed users to wirelessly upload images taken from their BlackBerry smartphone direct to their Flickr account.

The news comes at a strange time considering that RIM has been improving the cameras on their BlackBerry smartphones, which should see increased photo use from their customer base who would appreciate easy uploading to a popular photo sharing service such as Flickr.

For those needing to continue uploading photos to Flickr from their BlackBerry phones after March 1st, you will have to visit Flickr’s mobile site at m.flickr.com from your BlackBerry’s browser.

WiFi-sharing enthusiasts FON have released their latest router, the Fonera 2.0n. As the name suggests, the Fonera 2.0n packs 802.11n support, but they’ve also packed it with social networking integration, hard-drive sharing, Twitter status updates (for when someone connects to your router), BitTorrent downloading and webcam hosting.

With four ethernet ports the Fonera 2.0n can do the usual wired networking of local PCs, but there’s also a USB 2.0 port for hooking up a printer, hard-drive or webcam (or a USB hub, from which multiple USB devices can be shared across the network). You can set the Fonera 2.0n to automatically upload photos from a USB drive to Facebook, Flickr or Picasa, as well as set it to download BitTorrent files, MegaUpload files and RapidShare files; there’s also a YouTube uploader. All of these can be used when your PC or Mac is turned off, via the web-based UI.

Of course, the main point of choosing FON over other routers is that it means other FON users can access your connection, and you theirs, meaning less paying for WiFI hotspots when travelling. You can even make a little money, as FON members without their own shared hotspots are charged for connecting. The FON Fonera 2.0n is available in Europe and the US now, priced at €79 and $99 respectively.

Press Release:

FON Releases New Innovative Web Applications WiFi Router

World’s largest WiFi community releases groundbreaking 802.11n WiFi router
that interacts directly with Web 2.0 services

MADRID and SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ — FON today released
its most innovative WiFi router yet, the Fonera 2.0n. Furthermore, it
announced that its international WiFi network, the world’s largest,
surpassed 700,000 hotspots. Besides several new features, Fonera 2.0n
allows users to up and download files to their favorite Web 2.0 services
with their computer turned off. Fonera 2.0n is now available in the EU for
just euro 79 and in the US for just $99.

Fonera 2.0n combines all of FON’s revolutionary WiFi sharing and money
making features with 802.11n wireless technology, delivering faster
connection speeds and more WiFi reach. Most importantly, it has a growing
host of features and applications that make it easy for users to manage Web
2.0 services such as YouTube, Facebook, Picasa, Flickr and RapidShare–even
while users’ laptops are off. Fonera 2.0n can also automatically post
status messages to Twitter, alerting users to when an upload or download
has completed or to when another user has connected to their WiFi signal.

“As demand for WiFi and use of the social web continues to grow, FON
keeps creating WiFi products that give people what they really want,” said
Martin Varsavsky, FON’s CEO. “The Fonera 2.0n is not only a router that
lets you connect to the world’s largest WiFi community for free. It’s a
real social gadget that frees up you and your computer from tedious waiting
for uploads and downloads and even ‘talks’ to you via Twitter status
updates.”

A built-in USB port and Fonera 2.0n management software allow users to
connect and manage external hard drives and other USB devices. The Fonera
2.0n can be managed by accessing the Fonera web-interface from laptops,
computers and different kinds of WiFi devices including Apple iPhones or
Google Android based phones.

While logged in to the Fonera web-interface, users can instruct their
Fonera 2.0n to automatically upload videos or photos stored on a camera or
hard drive to YouTube, Flickr, Picasa and Facebook, or to download*
torrents and files directly to a USB hard drive. Then, because the Fonera
2.0n can also perform tasks independent of a computer, users are free to
log out and shut down their laptops completely – the Fonera 2.0n will
continue uploading and downloading any remaining files.

Additional features include the ability to backup files to a hard
drive, access a printer or webcam from anywhere, stream music via WiFi, and
convert a 3G or HSDPA dongle to WiFi. Users are also free to create
applications of their own on the Fonera 2.0n’s Open Source platform.

Fonera 2.0n can also help users save money on energy and reduce their
CO2 output. A Fonera 2.0n router consumes less than four watts while
downloading, instead of a PC that averages 100 watts, so users can reduce
their CO2 emissions by 273Kg a year–equivalent to driving an SUV more than
1,500km per year. **

“The deep integration of online file sharing, social networks, and
other Web 2.0 content into our already busy daily lives translates into
more hours spent at the computer, greater energy use and more greenhouse
emissions,” said Varsavsky. “By enabling users to handle basic computing
tasks from the router instead of the PC, we’re taking a small step towards
reducing power consumption without limiting functionality.”

Fonera 2.0n also maintains all the features of previous FON WiFi
routers. Once connected, it creates two separate WiFi signals, one private
and one public, that allow for a secure, wireless internet connection at
home and free access at FON Spots worldwide. Fonera owners can also choose
to make money*** by selling FON WiFi access passes or letting guests
securely roam at their FON Spot.

For further information about the Fonera 2.0n, visit http://www.fon.com

*FON does not promote illegal activities or otherwise violate any
applicable laws or intellectual property rights. Disclaimer: you should not
download copyrighted material unless you have permission from the copyright
holder to do so.

**Calculations based on data from 2009 PC Energy Report.

***Money making functionality not available in all countries.

About FON:

FON started the free WiFi revolution in 2006 with the first Fonera WiFi
router and the goal of free, ubiquitous WiFi for everyone. Today, FON has
more than 700.000 WiFi hotspots and over 1.7 million registered members.
FON also has a growing list of Telco partners including British Telecom,
SFR Neuf, ZON Portugal, and Comstar Russia who add FON functionality to
their broadband routers so that their customers can benefit from the FON
community, thereby enhancing their product offering. Google, eBay, British
Telecom, Index Ventures, Coral Group and Sequoia Capital are investors in
FON. For more information about FON, visit http://www.fon.com

We just talked about the JournE, the new Mobile Internet Device (MID) from Toshiba. We still have a relative lack of information regarding the details of the device, but if the media playback of HD videos, plus an emphasis on streaming online videos via sites like YouTube isn’t enough to get you excited, we don’t know what will. Truth be told, the MID-range of devices is pretty, well, mid-range, but from what we are seeing now, especially by the excitement displayed in the video after the break, we can’t help but get even more excited.

We’ve got streamlined services for Flickr and Picasa, and the Windows Live Messenger Service that offers chatting via text and voice. While we would have liked to have seen a more in depth look in the video, all we really get is a good glimpse of what the device will look like physically, and what we presume will be the standard homescreen, with a plethora of application widgets right there, ready to touch. We couldn’t help but chuckle, when the Facebook application was brought up, there was no real direct indication on how to go back to the home screen. This leads to a quick tour of the hardware, which encases the 7-inch screen in aluminum. However, they seemed to allude to the fact that the model they are holding is a special model, and perhaps not meant for mass production.

We’ll let the video take the rest. And by all means, tell us what you think. Do you think the price-range heard on the video, anywhere from $239 to $299 is a right price point for this thing? Or are you looking more for a smaller device?

The way of the tablet has been a rocky road, but it looks like all of that is beginning to change. Sure, Apple’s anticipated launch into the tablet market is helping to stroke the flames, but as long as it keeps promoting other companies to create things like Toshiba’s JounE, let’s just call it a win-win for everybody.

The JounE Touch is being treated as a Mobile Internet Device (MID) on the high-end side of the spectrum, with a heavy emphasis on video playback. The Touch can actually play reduced-quality High-Definition videos right on the screen, which is an 800×480 display, or full-resolution HD through the HDMI output. There’s WiFi on the device (obviously), and it looks like web browsing is actually put in second place, after watching streaming videos from YouTube or the movie service Acetrax.

There’s also streamlined access to Picasa and Flickr to view pictures on the device, and a Windows Live Messenger application that allows users to chat via text or voice. An RSS reader and a Facebook application are also preloaded on the JounE right out of the box. The JournE is based on the Windows CE Operating System (OS), and has 1GB of internal storage for listening to music. The MID also includes an SDHC slot, for expanding the memory that you’ll definitely need. Battery life is pretty minimal: 7 hours for music playback, and only 2 hours if you’re constantly browsing the internet. Toshiba is planning to launch the JournE in the Fall, but there isn’t any word on pricing as of yet.

Well, the Nokia N900 is official, and everyone is eagerly waiting to see if anything else gets outed about the device at this week’s upcoming Nokia World. It looks like there are some extra things to be revealed though, and images from the camera are definitely high up on that list. With the device packing a 5 mega-pixel camera, there are many of us out there who are wanting to see what kind of quality gets produced. Now here’s your chance.

We’re one to think that the old adage, “pictures are worth 1,000 words” is perfectly usable in most cases, and as these images show, it fits perfectly. There isn’t any new news regarding the device itself, at least not yet, and so these pictures taken by the Nokia N900 are all we have until Nokia gets even more official than they already have, in the next few days. These images were found on Flickr and Ovi, based on the source code of the picture, revealed after the TwitPic size comparison image got released.

And we’ll be there, live-blogging the event, to make sure that you get all the news you need from our favorite Espoo-based company. Are you excited for the N900? Are you wanting to get your hands on it? Do these pictures get you even more excited for it, or do you think it could be better?

So, the Chumby came out awhile ago. It’s this little box-like device that pulls information off the internet, like weather, news, and sports updates, and then displays them in Flash format in real-time. It was a pretty original idea, and while it may not have been the sharpest looking thing on the block, its functionality was close to making it worth it. Especially if you don’t like alarm clocks, and can’t afford the alternative. But, apparently the hardware wasn’t the top of the pick for many, and so Chumby is moving over onto the software front, hoping to make a name for itself.

Company executives at Chumby are hoping to ascertain a wider platform as they look to put the Chumby software on other gadgets, and therefore create a “powered by Chumby” brand. Which, for all intents and purposes, is probably better than banking on the $200 Chumby launched back in February of 2008, which is also available in Japan, the UK, and Australia. It’s a good strategy to focus on expanding the brand, and not simply pushing the hardware. By doing this, Chumby can see more market appeal, as it may appear on more familiar brands, which people feel “safer” buying.

It looks like Chumby is in talks with Samsung, Sony, Broadcom, and Marvell to be included in digital picture frames, TVs and Blu-Ray players. And if you aren’t excited enough yet, Chumby-powered products are set to appear some time later this year, probably by the holiday season, and in a digital frame. Let’s hope that Chumby can find a way to stream photos from Flickr, as well as include some other features like internet radio and weather all in one package. That would be a photo frame worth staring at for hours.

With Apple’s keynote speech coming up just around the bend, the rumors and leaks are picking up speed. And it looks like images of the foretold iTunes release are beginning to come in with some efficiency. In this batch, we see more of the social integration and third-party device support, and we can begin to see that Apple may be widening their horizons with this release. Third-party support is pretty big, especially for the Cupertino juggernaut, so iTunes may be just exactly what everyone is looking for.

We’ve seen Facebook, Flickr, and Twitter integration from previous leaks; rumors that Blu-Ray will be making an appearance; and even Last.fm comes along for the ride. But, just as these images show, nothing is set in stone quite yet. From what we can see from the Facebook screenshot, people will be able to create shared playlists on iTunes 9, and then share it through their Facebook page via the user’s wall, which will provide an iTunes link. But the biggest mention, as far as screened images go, is the fact that iTunes 9 will apparently be supporting third-party devices, which opens a lot of doors for a lot of people. iTunes may be one of the largest digital providers of music, but not [em]everyone[/em] enjoys some iPod/iPhone goodness.

Apple’s keynote is set for September 9, and there we will likely be seeing a lot of news regarding iTunes 9, as well as some other juicy tidbits. It’s going to be another big end-of-the-year for music fans, especially if you enjoy Apple and their products, both on the software end, as well as the hardware. Keep your eyes on SlashGear in the coming days for any more information.

One of the things that isn’t that great for me about my iPhone 3GS is that while improved this time around, the camera still isn’t that great. Sure, the camera on the 3GS is lots better than the camera on my original iPhone that was replaced by my new 3GS, but it is still very lacking.

I guess it makes a lot of sense that with the popularity of the iPhone it would be a popular camera for users of mobile photo services like Flickr, despite the serious drawbacks to taking photos with a smartphone. Flickr has unveiled the most popular cameras in the Flickr community and you might be surprised to find the iPhone sitting at a very close second place overall.

The iPhone is in a near tie for first place overall with the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi for the top camera on the community. Bringing up a distant third place is the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi, fourth place overall goes to the Nikon D80, and the fifth spot is another Canon, the EOS 40D. The iPhone crushes the smartphone competition with the Nokia N95 being the next most popular smartphone used for Flickr.

LG today announced their new NetCast Entertainment Access system that brings Yahoo!, Netflix and YouTube content directly to selected models in the company’s HDTV range. Both LCD and plasma TVs with the NetCast technology will be available, starting with the 47- and 42-inch LH50 LCD models and 60- and 50-inch PS80 plasma models.

NetCast does not require a computer; instead, the HDTV itself has an ethernet port and connects directly to a broadband connection (with or without a router). Select functionality, however, is set up through a web interface – such as Netflix queueing, or organizing Flickr or Picasa slideshows – for later viewing on the sets.

In addition, NetCast is DLNA compatible and supports streaming of JPEG images and MP3 audio files from networked computers. Samsung recently announced a similar partnership with Yahoo!, bring the company’s Widget Engine onto models in Samsung’s HDTV range.

Press Release:

LG ELECTRONICS LAUNCHES BROADBAND HDTVs WITH ‘NETCAST™ ENTERTAINMENT ACCESS’

New Content Providers Yahoo!®, Netflix, YouTube Give Consumers Freedom to Access Streaming Movies, News, Weather, Photos and More Directly to the TV

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7, 2009 – LG Electronics today announced two new HDTV series with NetCast™ Entertainment Access that offer instant streaming of movies, TV shows, video, and a Widget-based user experience via Ethernet connectivity directly to the television. Through new alliances with Yahoo!, Netflix, and YouTube™, consumers can instantly stream an almost endless catalogue of entertainment from viral videos and movies to photo sharing Web sites without the need of a separate PC*.

“LG’s new NetCast Entertainment Access capability broadens the user experience to include not only entertainment content, but also up-to-the minute news, stock information, weather updates, photo management and more by simply using the TV’s remote control,” said Peter Reiner, senior vice president, marketing and strategy, LG Electronics USA. “With these and future content relationships, LG continues to break the mold with innovative technologies designed to enhance consumers’ viewing experience.”

LG’s HDTVs with NetCast Entertainment Access (47- and 42-inch class* LH50 LCD models and 60- and 50-inch class* PS80 plasma models) and its full line of LCD and plasma products are on display this week at the 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) – Booth #8214, Central Hall, Las Vegas Convention Center. (See separate release for more information.)

Yahoo! Widget Engine: Content When You Want It, Where You Want It
The Yahoo! Widget Engine enables the discovery and enjoyment of a new class of interactive applications called TV Widgets. TV Widgets enable viewers to interact with popular Internet services and online media through applications specifically tailored to the needs of the television watcher such as up-to-the minute Yahoo! News, Weather and Finance.

Through Flickr®, Yahoo!’s online photo management and sharing application, consumers can enjoy their latest family and friend photos on the big screen. Accessible through a Yahoo! TV Widget, consumers can access this unique photo sharing site to run slideshows and view individual photos.

YouTube: Access to Millions of User-Generated Videos
As a leading online video community for people to discover, watch, and share originally created videos, YouTube allows consumers unlimited access to web based videos. Through LG’s alliance with this prolific online video community, consumers can instantly stream millions of Web videos directly from the Internet for viewing on their television. Key benefits include:

• Unlimited access to millions of videos on topics such as current events, instructional videos for hobbies and interests, comedic and viral videos
• Easy Searching, thumbnail previews and multiple screen size viewing options

Netflix: Instant Streaming Directly Through the TV
LG’s HDTVs with NetCast Entertainment Access will join the LG BD300 Network Blu-ray Disc Player as an industry first, providing the ability to stream movies instantly from Netflix, offering consumers a variety of ways to enjoy more than 12,000 choices of movies and TV episodes. Netflix members owning one of these devices pay as little as $8.99 for a monthly subscription for unlimited streaming and DVD rentals.

Instant streaming content from Netflix to the HDTV will rely on a broadband connection and Queue-based user interface. Netflix members will use the Netflix Web site to add movies and TV episodes to their individual instant Queues. Those choices will automatically be displayed on members’ TVs and available to watch instantly through the HDTV. Once selected, movies will begin playing in as little as 30 seconds.
With the accompanying remote control, Netflix members will be able to browse and make selections right on the TV screen and also have the ability to read synopses and rate movies. In addition, they will have the option of fast-forwarding and rewinding the video stream.

PC Content Sharing
Users can also choose to incorporate the NetCast-equipped HDTV into a home network to access JPEG photos or MP3 music files stored on their home PC to create slide shows and listen to music on their big screen.

Flickr released a new update today to their mobile website, and apparently users can now access and watch Flickr videos on their mobile phones. Even though Flickr videos were added back in April, it is only just now that you can watch them from your mobile devices.

What’s interesting, is that users were able to actually upload videos from their cell phones to Flickr, but couldn’t play them back. Prior to today, only a few iPhone users had access to this feature, but now all iPhone users and iPod Touch users can watch them. Other handset support is on the way, according to Flickr.

In fact, any browser that operates off of Webkit will soon have the mobile Flickr video-watching feature. Along with this upgrade, users may also notice an improved interface and the mobile app now allows users the ability to favorite images and add contacts.
