iPad WiFi fix promised in future firmware

The iPad's temperamental WiFi has already been fingered as a DHCP issue - temporarily fixable by power cycling the wireless or the tablet itself - but it seems Apple themselves are readying what will hopefully be a more permanent fix.  The company's two support pages for the iPad WiFi issue (here and here) have been updated with the promise that "Apple will also address remaining Wi-Fi connectivity issues with a future iPad software update."

Motorola MILESTONE Android 2.1 update released

Motorola Europe have announced that the long-awaited Android 2.1 update for the Motorola MILESTONE - the European version of the Verizon DROID - is finally available for download.  The impatient can head over to Motorola's support pages and get it for PC installation, while those with better things to do with their time - or who use a Mac, since Moto don't seem to offer an OS X version of the firmware updater - can wait a few days for a promised OTA update.

Fusion Garage has confirmed that the promised JooJoo software update has been released OTA to existing owners.  Tipped to address UI problems and bring full-screen Flash video playback to the iPad-alternative, the new firmware has also been loaded onto demo JooJoo units Fusion Garage have been toting for their European roll-out; unfortunately, judging by some hands-on impressions with the updated unit, it's still not perfect.

Samsung BD-UP5000 firmware 1.5 update promises Avatar Blu-ray support

Samsung's BD-UP5000 Blu-ray player and its problems coping with the new Avatar disc showed that not all media - or firmware - are created equal, but true to their word the company have swung into action with a firmware update.  Posted to the Samsung support site this week, all that's mentioned in the firmware release notes is that v1.5 "improves playback compatibility in some movies."

Kindle firmware 2.5 imminent: Twitter/Facebook integration, ebook Collections, more

Amazon have announced a new firmware build for their Kindle ereader, currently in private beta, which adds social network sharing, improved ebook organisation tools and more.  Kindle Version 2.5 will be released for both the Kindle and larger Kindle DX models in late May 2010; one of the headline features is the ability to share book passages on Facebook and Twitter directly from the Kindle itself.

JooJoo gets European launch; new software imminent to address early critique

Would-be JooJoo buyers in Europe can now order Fusion Garage's web-slate, with the company's online store being updated to offer international shipping.  The tablet - which is priced at $499 in the US - comes in at £319 ($486) in the UK and €359 ($474) in mainland Europe.  Meanwhile, according to the new Fusion Garage blog, sales have increased as the JooJoo proves it's not vaporware, while the company accepts that they've handled some things poorly and promises a fast-approaching software update.

Peek “big product news” is free software upgrade this summer

Peek's cryptic tease about their upcoming "really, truly big stuff" has been fleshed out a little, and it looks as though the change isn't new hardware but in fact a software update.  In a recent WSJ piece, Peek CEO Amol Sarva confirmed that the company's "big product news is coming this summer: a free upgrade to all Peeks that significantly expands the capabilities of our mobile internet device."  Unfortunately there's no indication of exactly what that update will bring.

Barnes & Noble have announced a new firmware version for their dual-screen nook ebook reader.  nook firmware v1.3 adds a new (beta) web browser, which uses the E Ink display for content and the touchscreen color LCD for navigation, together with faster page-turns, speedier ebook opening and some new games.  Meanwhile the Read In Store feature - which allows nook owners to preview entire ebooks while connected to B&N store WiFi - has now been activated.

Sony PS3 3.30 firmware preps for 3D, quietly updates TOS

Sony are pushing out a new PlayStation 3 firmware update, which - among the changes - supposedly "preps" the console for the upcoming addition of 3D stereoscopic gaming.  PS3 3.30 System Software makes trophy sorting more straightforward, with new ways to view achievements, but the firmware supposedly brings with it an updated Terms of Service (TOS) agreement to which PS3 users must agree.  Among the TOS changes are apparently permission for Sony to automatically update or change content, services and functionality on PS3 or PSP hardware, without requiring owner permission.
