Some detailed digging through the latest version of Zune software has turned up numerous references to what looks to be phone capability, along with some product codenames, leading to suggestions that the rumored Zune phone and the Project Pink handsets could in fact all be in the same family. Zune Boards discovered not only the Zune HD but the PmxPure and PmxTurtle lurking in the eEndpointFamily files - the section which details all compatible hardware - references recognizable as the codenames for the two leaked Project Pink devices spotted in September last year.
Meanwhile further entries referred to the ability to "View and manage pictures and videos taken with your phone at the Studio", with users able to sign up as "Studio members". The suggestion is that this could be Microsoft's new media upload service, enabling content produced on the handset to be shared via a web gallery.

Android 2.0 HTC Hero firmware not due until March?
HTC Hero owners have been eagerly anticipating the promised Android 2.x update for their handsets, but according to the latest information it seems there's a little while longer to go yet. According to a comment from a member of Irish carrier Meteor's support team, HTC don't expect an Android 2.0 firmware update to be released until March 2010.

HTC HD2 SMS update: third time lucky?
HTC don't seem to be having much luck addressing the ongoing SMS problem some HD2 owners are experiencing. After posting - and subsequently pulling - two firmware updates already, it's now time for the third attempt. HTC HD2 firmware v1.66.707.1 is, like the others, intended to deliver "fast and reliable SMS messaging"; whether it does, we'll have to wait and see.

Archos 5 Internet Tablet gets second shot at Android 1.6 update
Having briefly released and then promptly pulling the last firmware update for the Archos 5 Internet Tablet, the French company have left owners waiting as they tweak the apparent "major issue" in the web browser. Now Archos have tried again, releasing firmware 1.7.33 complete with an update to Android 1.6 Donut for the touchscreen tablet.

HTC HD2 firmware update
HTC have pushed out a reasonably significant firmware update for the HD2, addressing in-call voice quality as well as tweaking accelerometer performance. The update apparently improves automatic portrait/landscape orientation flips in the preinstalled Opera browser, together with offering what sounds like gapless music playback from the HD2's mediaplayer.
Update: Antony points out that this update has been around for a while - Thanks! However HTC have also pulled the recent SMS update for the HD2, which users had mixed results with. No word from the company as to their reasons for doing so.

HTC have pushed out a second SMS hotfix for the HD2 today, described as a "new SMS function update". While the description is generic, it's believed that the new update might address ongoing SMS issues whereby outgoing messages fail to send and instead get stuck in the user's outbox.

N900 gets Maemo 5 PR1.1 update: Exchange 2003 support, Ovi Maps improved
Nokia have pushed out a significant firmware upgrade for the Nokia N900, Maemo 5 PR1.1, and there are some key changes which will hopefully make it a more palatable device for business users. Top of the list is tweaked Mail for Exchange support, which means the N900 now supports Exchange Server 2003; previously the N900 would only work with more recent versions, despite many companies still using 2003 (or third-party equivalents of it, such as Kerio Mail Server installs).

Palm Pre webOS 1.3.5.2 update hits Europe
Palm have released webOS 1.3.5.2 for European Pre users, a firmware upgrade that bundles together the collective improvements of the 1.3.5 and 1.3.5.1 updates US users saw last week. Among the improvements are more space allotted for the installation of third-party applications, the ability to tether the Pre via Bluetooth (though make sure this is something O2 is happy with you doing first, unless you want to run the risk of penalties should they discover it), and animated GIF support in the browser.

Zune HD to get XviD support, smarter playlists come Spring
In a somewhat inconspicuous update Microsoft has revealed that the Zune HD will receive a firmware update adding native support for the MPEG-4 Part 2 ASP codec, including the long-awaited format of choice for many netizens, XviD video support. Microsoft has assured that files in this format should play both on the Zune HD itself, as well as when sent out to an external TV display via the HD’s AV Dock.

Motorola DEXT and Milestone getting Android 2.1 too
Having seen their US arm confirm that the Motorola CLIQ, DROID and Backflip would see Android 2.1 firmware updates at some point, Motorola Europe have announced that the DEXT and the Milestone would get similarly updated too. The news was posted to the company's Facebook page, and also confirmed that the Milestone will be getting an intermediate update too.

GSM HTC Hero update released [Updated]
A new ROM update for the HTC Hero has gone live on the company's UK support site, but right now it's not entirely clear what the new firmware addresses. Version 2.73.771.73 (H3G) was released today and is apparently a "generic software update" free of any carrier modifications; however we've tried to download the package using the serial number from a regular, unlocked GSM Hero only to be told that it's unsuitable for our device.
