Canon 5D Mark II new firmware enables video manual controls

Wow, I never thought that would happen and I think I just wet my pants. Canon has today revealed a big upgrade to EOS DLSR 5D Mark II, unleashing the long-awaited manual controls on video capture mode! The new firmware, to be released next week, will permit manual adjustments on aperture, ISO as well as shutter speed when recording movie – a huge deal for DSLR video fanatics if you ask me. Super Talent UltraDrive SSDs get speed-boost Windows 7 firmware

Super Talent have boosted their write-speeds of their their UltraDrive SSD range by up to 25-percent, and they've done so without even touching the hardware.  The new firmware for the UltraDrive ME and UltraDrive LE SSDs means that Windows 7 users will  now see up to 260MB/sec read rates and up to 210MB/sec write rates. WiFi ‘n’ & FM transmitter in next-gen iPhone

According to the latest build of the iPhone firmware 3.0, the next-gen iPhone - known as iPhone 3.1 in the documentation - will use Broadcom's BCM4329 chipset, bringing with it the potential of improved WiFi performance and radio functionality.  The BCM4329 adds support for WiFi draft-n, together with power saving features and not just an FM receiver but a transmitter also. Sony PS3 firmware v2.70 released: chatrooms, video backup

Sony have released the PS3 v2.70 firmware update, presumably the "significant global announcement" they had previously promised.  Sony PS3 firmware v2.70 adds Text Chat functionality, a Friends List on the XMB, video backup to an external hard-drive and synchronization of PSP video over to the PS3 for big-screen viewing. Canon Japan has unleashed firmware ver 2.0.0.0 for the Superzoom PowerShot SX1 IS digital camera. This update enabled high-detail and unprocessed RAW format capture, a follow-up to what they’ve promised when the camera announced to be released in US market next month. Read The Full Story

Olympus outs firmware for Zuiko Digital ED 9-18mm F4.0-5.6

Olympus has today announced a firmware update for its Zuiko Digital ED 9-18mm F4.0-5.6, the Four Thirds System standard wide-angle zoom lens, to further improve ”IMAGER AF operation under certain conditions“. To load the firmware, both camera and lens are required; for Olympus, update can be applied via the camera supplied software, while Panasonic user can obtain a firmware updater via Olympus website here.

Nokia blame firmware for 5800 NAM 3G issue

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic NAM 3G saga continues, with the latest being talk of a firmware update that will solve all reception woes.  According to an internal Nokia source, when reception was tested on a 5800 NAM edition with the latest firmware, no problems were found. Read The Full Story

Canon’s 1D and 1Ds Mark III get AF, Err 99 service notices and firmware update

Canon has today announced firmware update and issued another AF patch for the much-controversial EOS 1D Mark III and 1Ds Mark III. The latter is additional to the sub mirror fix released couple years ago, which requires camera to be returned to company’s service location; while the new firmware addresses liveview hiccup, USB communication bug and corrects error codes. In addition to implement better AF, Canon also published a service notice to the dared “Err 99” occurrence that’s related to mirror operation. A common operation error code that’s designated for all Canon’s DSLR. The fixes mean the much confused and many “dot” series of current Mark III production would get even more complex. The upside is issues are being addressed but would definitely hurt resell value.

Apple TV v2.3.1 update yanks Boxee

Apple have released a new update for the Apple TV, version 2.3.1, and users have discovered that it unceremoniously dumps the unofficial Boxee plugin from their set-top box.  Boxee is an open-source media player, and by installing it onto the Apple TV the STB is able to play just about any DRM-free multimedia file, rather than simply Apple's own iTunes content (or files specifically compatible with iTunes).
