Fiat-Chrysler will buy back as many as 500,000 trucks in a hugely costly settlement with the NHTSA that also includes a penalty that could reach $105m. News of the buy-back comes after the beleaguered manufacturer agreed to recall a whopping 1.5m cars, SUVs, and trucks late last week, with today's record fine coming after the firm failed to convince the US safety regulator that it handled a total of 23 recalls affecting in excess of 11m vehicles effectively over the past few years.

Following this week's news about a Jeep vehicle that was hacked from a remote location while driving down the road, parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) have announced a recall affecting 1.4 million cars in the US. The recall is obviously over potential hole in the security of the software running on the vehicles. In the Jeep incident, which was covered in a report from Wired, the hackers managed to send signals to car's dashboard over the internet while it was traveling at 70 mph.

While things have been quiet on the topic of Apple's secretive electric car project — codenamed Titan — for several months now, the company is still moving ahead on whatever is behind those closed doors. A new report from Reuters on Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne's recent trip to California has provided evidence that Apple has serious plans for technologies related to automobiles. It seems the purpose of Marchionne's visit was to experience the intersection of Silicon Valley technology and the car industry. The FCA CEO was treated to a ride in Google's self-driving car and met with Tesla founder Elon Musk, as well as sitting down and talking to Apple's Tim Cook.
