SlashGear Review: SanDisk Cruzer Contour USB Flash Drive

, Aug 13th 2007 Discuss [7]

Right now, USB drives seem to fall into one of three categories.  You’ve got your bargain basement, no-brand sorts, often to be found as giveaways full of promotional literature at trade shows; then there are the bizarre drives, shaped like sushi or animals.  Finally, there are the drives that aim to be the modern-day version of a gentleman’s cigarette holder (only far more socially acceptable and a darn sight healthier); something weighty and classically designed, which you can fiddle with while you’re not actually using.  SanDisk are decidedly proud of their Cruzer Contour, a drive falling resolutely into that final category, and they sent one over to SlashGear hoping that we’d like it so much we’d let them get to second-base.

SlashGear Review – Toshiba Satellite A205

, Aug 13th 2007 Discuss [0]

You’ll remember that I had the pleasure of testing out Toshiba’s 17-inch behemoth laptop not too long ago. While its large screen was certainly great looking and gave you plenty of desktop space, it wasn’t the lightest, or most powerful machine. However, I have recently been using their 15-inch A205 -S4639 which is which is smaller and more powerful.

The new iMac!

We knew our man Steve Jobs wouldn’t yield the stage to anyone else, so he got up himself and decided to talk about the Mac. The Mac has grown 3 times as fast as the rest of the industry, so they’re pushing forward with the line.

new iMac

Of course, as we all knew, the iMac is getting some loving. It is getting an aluminum enclosure, which he says will be more professional and durable. They will also be adding glass to the screen, meaning it will be glossy.. It’s going to be much thinner before, and upgrading the memory will be easy. Just remove the screw (I say the screw because there is only one visible screw on the whole machine) and pop it in.

SlashGear Review: Data Robotics Drobo intelligent data robot

, Aug 6th 2007 Discuss [4]

I’m obsessed with data backups and willing to scarify my sleeping time just to get my crucial data backed up. Even with this kind of mentality, I still worry about data-loss due to backup corruption caused by backup drive failure. Data redundancy has been my main priority aside from doing the actual backup itself, and I’ve been using RAID technology for that.

Data Robotics Drobo intelligent backup robot

However, RAID requires me to have drives with the same capacities and I don’t think drive manufacturers will continue to produce the same capacity models for the next four to seven years. It looked like I would end up buying a brace of new drives every few years; then came my saviour named Drobo, the data robot from Data Robotics.

Rumor: iPhone unlocked for European customers

, Aug 6th 2007 Discuss [1]

If this info is true, the team from Hackint0sh and a Macedonian hacker successfully broke open the iPhone’s carrier lock allowing it to be used with a European SIM card. The previous hack only let the iPhone make calls, however, this process is suppose to fully unlock all functionalities such as incoming and outgoing calls, SMS and EDGE data access.

iphone crack

You should be aware that by using this hack to unlock the iPhone will invalidate the iPhone’s warranty as well as run the risk of your carrier canceling your service, or worse. Ok, that being said, the process requires a SIM reader/writer, a SilverCard smart card (with PIC16F877+24LC64 eeprom) and a V1Comp SIM.

Full instructions can be found on MY iTablet and Hackint0sh forums.
