Sprint Asks FCC To Block AT&T, T-Mobile Merger

When AT&T announced its plans to purchase T-Mobile for $39 billion, the most vocal opposition was third-place carrier Sprint. Very early on, Sprint warned U.S. regulators that the acquisition would "alter dramatically the structure of the communications industry" and said that AT&T and T-Mobile combined would be three times its own size. When AT&T first submitted its pitch to the FCC on why it needed to buy T-Mobile, they're general theme was that it would be better for customers. They claimed that their current network would not be able to sustain the impending influx of smartphone data traffic and that the acquisition of T-Mobile would boost network coverage and build-out. Fresh from being grilled at last week's Senate Judiciary panel, Apple and Google may next have to participate in a public forum to answer more questions on their phones' location tracking. This time, it's the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that want some answers. AT&T, Verizon Battle FCC Over 700MHz Interoperability For Smaller Carriers To Roam

Earlier this month, the FCC mandated that large carriers such as AT&T and Verizon had to share their data networks with smaller regional carriers---they are already required to share voice networks---such that roaming deals are priced reasonably. As part of this mandate, was a push for interoperability across different bands of the 700MHz network and their associated hardware so that smaller carriers can roam on the different networks of the larger carriers. AT&T officially filed with the FCC yesterday seeking approval for their acquisition of T-Mobile. Among the many reasons they gave, one that stood out was an admission that the current state of their network cannot handle the onslaught of iPhones, iPads, and other new smartphones and tablets. Thus, the T-Mobile acquisition is necessary to ensure an improved and stable network for customers.
