SlashGear 101: What is Apple FaceTime?

Video calls were a mainstay of classic sci-fi films, and even today there's something almost magical about seeing your friends and family on the screen of a portable device. Video calling has been around for some time, but it's only really in the past year or so that its got more attention among regular users. That's thanks in no small part to Apple and FaceTime, as found on the iPhone 4, iPad 2 and other gadgets from the company's range. Read on as we give FaceTime the full SlashGear 101 treatment!

Apple’s FaceTime playing Big Brother

Apple’s FaceTime playing Big Brother

Get out your masks! The paranoia police are out in force! A user over at Apple's discussion boards posted this about an experience she had using FaceTime.

My boyfriend and I have both recently experienced this problem several times – when one of us is calling the other via FaceTime, an old picture freezes on our screen, while the person receiving the call only sees a black screen. It’s kind of creepy, because it brought up photos of both of us at work, where I have used FaceTime a few times but he never has. We’re just wondering how/why this is happening, and if there is a fix. It’s not terribly inconvenient, but it’s definitely unsettling, where is seems that even if we haven’t taken a picture or used FaceTime, the camera is keeping images. If anyone else is experiencing this, we’d love feedback. Thanks!

No 720p FaceTime HD for iPad 2

Apple showed off the new slim form of the iPad 2 along with iOS 4.3, A5 chip, faster CPU and graphics speeds and demoed new creativity apps, GarageBand and iMovie, at today's unveiling event that was overall pretty awesome. However, one thing that the iPad 2 truly fails to impress is the uninspiring quality of their front and rear facing cameras which means no 720p FaceTime HD for the new device.

According to 9 to 5 Mac's discovery, the iPad 2's rear camera is listed at a mere 1-megapixel resolution, something that prompts them to suggest it's actually the same unit as on the fourth-gen iPod touch.

Microsoft is working on FaceTime competitor

Microsoft is working on FaceTime competitor

One of the most interesting features of the iPhone 4 that I never use is FaceTime. The ability to make video calls sounds really cool and I would bet many iPhone users like the feature and use it. A rumor is floating that claims Microsoft is working on a competitor to FaceTime for Windows Phone 7.

Facebook to Trademark the Word “Face”

Facebook to Trademark the Word “Face”

For real? I mean for real for real? Yes, a "Notice of Allowance" has been bestowed upon Mark Zuckerberg's company as it strives to gain trademark over its own brand. How does it make sense to trademark just the "Face" part? Let's see- they're attempting to make sure no other company would be able to use the word Face in the following way: "Telecommunication services, namely, providing online chat rooms and electronic bulletin boards for transmission of messages among computer users in the field of general interest and concerning social and entertainment subject matter, none primarily featuring or relating to motoring or to cars." So I assume I can keep my FaceBoot auto enthusiast messageboard then? Excellent.

FaceTime Security Hole Easily Fixed

FaceTime Security Hole Easily Fixed

FaceTime for Mac, released just yesterday, already has what some call a "security hole," but not to worry, it's a simply fix. Apparently one a user has logged into FaceTime on their Mac, their Apple ID and password can be altered from the application by anyone with access to the computer while FaceTime is running. Harsh! Unless you understand basic security for anything you own or run, ever.
