LaCie Rikiki tiny external HDD is monkey catnip

Your eyes do not deceive you: that is a monkey, and it's attempting to steal your LaCie Rikiki hard-drive.  The grabby little simian has obviously spotted that LaCie's new external drive is the most compact 2.5-inch model on the market, offering up to 640GB of capacity in an aluminum chassis. "Rikiki", meanwhile, is French for tiny, so the drive is a linguistics lesson as well as a place to offload your media files to.  We're not sure if the monkey is French - surely he'd be wearing a beret if that were the case. One of the new technologies that I am most looking forward to is USB 3.0. I have an external hard drive that I back my computer up to and it takes forever over a USB 2.0 connection. LaCie seem to be going back and filling in any blanks in their mediaplayer line-up right now, neatly slotting the LaCinema Classic HD into the range.  Coming somewhere in-between the non-HD LaCinema Classic and the HDD-free LaCinema Classic Bridge, the new device promises Full HD 1080p playback of various formats - including DivX, MKV, AVC and H.264 - from its 1TB internal hard-drive, together with DLNA media server support. Data Robotics unveil new Drobo S and DroboElite backup systems

Data Robotics have doubled their range of so-called intelligent backup systems with the launch of two new models, the Drobo S and the DroboElite.  The Drobo S takes the original four-bay Drobo and adds in not only an extra drive bay but an eSATA port and enhanced FireWire 800 performance, meaning that the backup system now boasts hardware redundancy against up to two simultaneous hard-drive failures.  Meanwhile the DroboElite has a full eight drive bays and dual iSCSI ports and is, unsurprisingly, targeted at small and medium businesses who want 16TB or more of backup space. Umazone UMA-ISO automatically mounts your DVD images

Japanese accessory manufacturer Umazone have outdone themselves with a hard-drive caddy that will likely strike a chord with anyone doing regular software installs.  The Umazone UMA-ISO looks like a regular 2.5-inch HDD drive enclosure; however it also has a small display and, on the side, a jog wheel, which can be used to flick through ISO CD and DVD images stored on the drive inside.  Once selected, plugging the UMA-ISO into a host computer is pretty much the same as dropping the original disc into a CD/DVD drive. Hitachi pulls wraps off new 2TB SimpleDrive, SimpleTech Pro Drive, and SimpleTech Duo Pro Drive

Hitachi has unveiled a new line of external storage solutions with 2TB capacity. One of the new solutions has a 4TB storage capacity. All of the new external storage models use the Hitachi Deskstar 2TB 7K2000 2TB HDD. Hitachi is also offering the drive in an internal hard drive kit for desktop computers. Read The Full Story

Clickfree C2 backup drives get scheduling, hardware encryption, more

We've a soft spot for Clickfree's straightforward backup drives, ever since playing with some of the early hardware back in March and discovering it was simple enough even to get a lazy SlashGear editor (i.e. me) to regularly backup.  Now Clickfree are back with their next-gen drives, the C2 series.  As well as basic usability improvements - there's now an attached USB cable that tucks away in a cut-out on the back, meaning forgetting the cord is no longer a valid excuse - the Clickfree C2 also adds in some more advanced functionality. Active Media Aviator 312 SSDs use SuperSpeed USB 3.0
