If you ever thought a tuba and a baritone’s horns would make good speakers, it turns out you were right. As proven by these speakers enclosing 4 subwoofers and a ceiling-high box and then letting what literally looks like the bells from those two instruments be the only outlet for sound, you get some amazing sound quality.

Words cannot even begin to describe how awesome the HTC Excalibur feels in the palm of your hand, and watching videos only gets you there half way. You just need to hold it to understand why I’m giving the HTC Excalibur Best In Show at CTIA Wireless IT and Entertainment in LA 2006. I’ll elaborate more on this in a later article when I do a side-by-side comparison between the HTC Excalibur and Nokia’s E62 smartphone.

HTC Excalibur Is T-Mobile DashThe HTC Excalibur is also known as the XDA Cosmo, available in Germany through O2 network. There are rumblings that T-Mobile will score the HTC Excalibur; called Dash. I confirm this report thanks to a shot I’d captured during my photo shoot at the show. Check out the screen shot below showing the T-Mobile logo. Also, thanks to a screen shot via MoDaCo, shows the Dash’s System Information revealing the model name as T-Mobile Dash. More after the jump!

German consumer telecommunication magazine “connect” was privy to a working prototype of the HTC Excalibur.  The magazine has published more information about the device in the latest issue.  Arne of the unwired has the scoop!  The biggest news is O2 Germany will be the first to have the Excalibur under the new name O2 XDA cosmo, despite the previous dress up with T-Mobile themes.

connect reports that the O2 XDA cosmo featuring Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone will be available during September or October of this year.  European carriers can expect the device a hell of a lot sooner than the carriers stateside – with a time frame pushing out towards the end of this year.

If you’ve got your eye on the Motorola Q but not on the Verizon Network, you can either wait for it to be available on Sprint or dump your current carrier.  There’s a third option; wait for i-Mate to release the JAQ.  i-Mate rebrands their smartphones from HTC, so it’s highly possible that the JAQ is a distant cousin of the Excalibur.  Both devices share the same TI OPMAP850 200MHz processor, but the JAQ has a 2.8-inch screen compared to the 2.4-inch for the Excalibur.  The over all layout design and button placement is also a little bit different.  The keys are vertically elongated and a horizontally layout for the call row; while the touch/jogstrip for scrolling is missing all together.  I think the jogstrip was relocated to the right hand side.

Given a choice between the Excalibur and JAQ, I pick the JAQ.  It looks more professional and has a larger screen and battery.  i-Mate JAQ and HTC Excalibur specs after the jump.
