Verizon are wising up to the fact that data subscribers want to keep using their WWAN modems even when outside the reach out EVDO Rev.A networks, hence this: the USB1000 Global Modem.  As well as CDMA service while in the US, the Verizon USB1000 supports triband HSPA for when you’re abroad; there are also global data plans for regular travelers.

rim blackberry tour 9630Sprint and Verizon may be keeping relatively quiet about the BlackBerry Tour 9630’s functionality, but unsurprisingly RIM themselves are pretty keen to get the news out there about exactly what their new “world phone” can do.  The smartphone is primarily intended to use CDMA EVDO Rev.A connectivity, but it also packs UMTS/HSPA 2100MHz support and quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE for use when abroad.

Elsewhere there’s a 480 x 340 resolution display, 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus and image stabilization, and 256MB of onboard storage with a microSD card to augment that.  The Tour 9630 also has GPS with support for photo geotagging.

Verizon isn’t letting Sprint have all the BlackBerry Tour fun, and while there’s no official press release as yet the smartphone has shown up on the carrier’s site.  Tipped for a Verizon launch back in May, when the smartphone was spotted in the carrier’s inventory system, there’s no sign of a specific release date.

Virgin Mobile USA have announced a pay-as-you-go mobile broadband service, which will be exclusively available through Best Buy Mobile.   Broadband2Go uses a Novatel Wireless EVDO Rev.A USB modem, and offers contract-free data from as little as $10; however, there are limits over how that data access can be used.

It looks, judging by these images, like someone has been faxing something they shouldn’t have, but when the leak is a detailed spec-sheet for the BlackBerry Tour 9630 we won’t quibble over it coming on thermal paper.  According to MobileSyrup’s source, the Tour 9630 will arrive on Canadian carrier Bell in mid-July, bringing with it an HVGA 480 x 360 display, 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera with flash, quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE, 2100MHz UMTS/HSPA and 800/1900MHz EVDO Rev.A.

The Amazon Kindle may be sitting pretty as the best-known ebook reader out there right now, but all that could change if some of the new breed of e-ink devices have their way.  Computex 2009 has seen a few new designs introduced, often packing various wireless technologies and/or touchscreens.  IAC stacks up the wireless, with WiMAX, EVDO and WiFi, while Netronix has been showing multiple sizes from 6-inches through to 9.7-inches.

Palm Pre Review

By Vincent Nguyen and Chris Davies on Wednesday, Jun 3rd 2009 5 Comments

A lot can happen in five months. Announced to dropped jaws at CES back in January, the Palm Pre has captured attention in a way usually only Cupertino can. Tightly patrolled demos at intervening tradeshows have only added to the allure; now, on June 6th, it’s Palm and Sprint’s chance to see whether hype adds up to sales. SlashGear have been living, breathing and sleeping Pre for the past couple of weeks: read on for our full review.

It almost seems unnecessary to go over the Pre’s hardware: it’s been pored over since the CES launch. As well as the obvious things – the 3.1-inch 320 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, slide-out hardware QWERTY keyboard, multitouch strip under the display and 3-megapixel camera on the back – there’s EVDO Rev.A, WiFi b/g, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and a multitasking-capable processor lurking inside.
