The newest way to get an energy boost is via a third-party food or drink is “Sheets”, little slips of solid matter you put in your mouth and let dissolve before you swallow. These little things are co-founded by basketball star LeBron James and, I kid you not, their tagline is “Taking a Sheet.” Not the most appetizing slogan if you ask anyone on our staff, but what can you do with a name like “Sheet?” Seems like the most logical step to turn it into something you take. And “Taking a Sheet at the mall just got easier,” as they’re saying, as Sheets will be rolling out a series of automated kiosks for the solid energy supplement soon.

Each of these kiosks will, believe it or not, be coming out in the United States before they reach Japan, and will contain 4 packs of Sheets, 10 packs of sheets, and Sheets branded hats and t-shirts. It’s what they’re calling a “highly advanced, non-human retail experience” and each machine has two plasma screens (just for viewing) that can show messages that change daily. Whether or not these machines will grow to carry other similar products in the near future is still unknown.

According to Sheets officials, the group has received significant interest from vending machine operators across the board, classic machine operators who wish to insert Sheets into their own machines on the side. Price points for said Sheets will remain the same as they’ve been for the short time they’ve been available to the public, that being 4 count: $3; 10 count: $6; Sheets hat: $20; and Sheets t-shirt: $20. Wearing said t-shirt and hat, I must mention, will almost certainly drive our society into an Idiocracy-like state where everyone wears brand names for clothing and BRONDO is our main source for water.

On the other hand, having a gigantic energy boost via a strange tab you place on your tongue seems completely fine, this way making sure you don’t get the nasty teeth-rotting liquid in your gums like you would normally do with soda pop and energy liquids. Agreed?

A reasonably stylish all-in-one with a sub-$400 price-tag and 18.5-inch widescreen display: too good to be true or bargain of the century? The eMachines EZ1601-01 poaches Intel’s trusty Atom processor for some desktop duty, offering a squint-free LCD and full-sized peripherals. SlashGear have been testing it out.

Intel’s Atom N270 processor may be more commonly found in 10-inch and smaller netbooks, but that hasn’t stopped manufacturers from slotting the low-power – and admittedly low performance – chip into desktop machines. Although the form-factor of the eMachines EZ1601-01 may be strikingly different from, say, an Eee PC, what’s inside isn’t; the 1.6GHz CPU is paired with 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 2.5-inch 160GB hard-drive, Intel GMA 950 graphics and WiFi b/g. For that you can blame Intel’s configuration limitations on what hardware can be matched up with its Atom N-series chips; the company fears anything more and the processors might start eating into their mainstream CPU range.

What is different from the typical netbook is a DVD burner and an 18.5-inch, 1366 x 768 LCD display. Unlike some all-in-one nettops we’ve seen, such as the ASUS Eee Top, this lacks any sort of touchscreen layer; instead you’ll likely be using the bundled PS/2 keyboard and mouse. Ports on the eMachines EZ1601-01 are split between the left-hand side, which has two USB 2.0, audio in/out and a multiformat card reader, and a down-facing panel around the back. That has a further three USB 2.0 ports, gigabit ethernet, audio output, two PS/2 ports and the DC power plug, and while a chore for regular access does at least mean the EZ1601-01 can back up close to the wall.

Hardware controls are limited to a brightness and power, the former notching the backlight between five different levels. Display quality is reasonable, though nothing special, and it’s worth noting that there’s no video output for plugging in a second screen or a VGA projector. Not, perhaps, something most EZ1601-01 owners would be likely to demand, but a limitation all the same. eMachines’ integrated speakers are similarly average, which for the price and the market positioning means you’ll be wanting to plug an external set in for anything other than the occasional system bleep. Happily that second audio-out socket on the rear panel means you needn’t have a speaker cable perpetually hanging from the side.

In terms of hardware performance, it comes as no surprise to find the eMachines EZ1601-01 sluggish and outpaced when it comes to anything but the most basic of tasks. While it may look like rival all-in-ones from Lenovo and Dell, the N270 processor brings performance on a par with most netbooks. In Geekbench the EZ1601-01 managed a total score of 871, bested by MSI’s Wind U100 (with 886) and ASUS’ Eee PC 1000H (with 883), neither the most current of netbooks. Browsing the internet with a clutchful of tabs open while music plays in the background is manageable, yes, but system-intensive tasks such as ripping CDs, processing video and playing back high-definition footage range from painfully slow through to plainly impossible.

Given the budget price-tag, though, we can perhaps forgive the eMachines EZ1601-01′s shortcomings. At $399.99 it makes for a decent web-centric browsing, emailing and instant-messaging desktop, with a more eye-friendly display than a similarly priced netbook. It’s less portable, of course – though at 9lbs it’s reasonably luggable – but if you’re considering a netbook as a second or third PC to keep the household internet addicts quiet then the EZ1601-01 makes for a reasonable alternative.

Acer subsidiary eMachines have released another all-in-one desktop PC, the EZ1601-01, promising “high-style” for a budget price of just $399.99. Stylish it may (arguably) be, but the EZ1601-01 isn’t likely to set any desks aflame; inside the gloss-black casing lurks an Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz processor, paired with 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard-drive.

If you’re thinking “hey, that sounds like a netbook” then you’re right: the eMachines all-in-one is basically the guts of a netbook squeezed into an 18.5-inch 1366 x 768 display. There’s also WiFi b/g, a matching keyboard and mouse, and five USB 2.0 ports.

In fact the only thing - bar the extra screen inches – you’ll find here that might be unusual on a netbook is the 8x DVD burner. Graphics are courtesy of the same GMA 950 you’ll find in your Eee PC, and there’s the usual multi-format card reader. One nice tweak is that it should be a quiet machine; there’s no fan involved.

The eMachines EZ1601-01 All-In-One Desktop PC is available now, priced at $399.99.

eMACHINES INTRODUCES CONTEMPORARY ALL-WHITE SMALL FORM FACTOR DESKTOP PC WITH MATCHING MONITOR

New mini PC’s modern design combines best-in-class style with low-cost and value; new monitor provides cinematic quality viewing with new streamlined styling at a great value

The EL1300 Series offers powerful performance combined with user-friendly features and a shiny, bright, all-white design, accented with green LED lighting. The new widescreen monitor compliments the all-white PC with similar styling and offer consumers excellent high-definition picture quality and innovative technology.

With its second generation small form factor desktop, the EL1300 Series, eMachines brings style and elegance to this tiny little powerhouse. Just one-third the size of traditional desktop PCs, these super compact systems rival mainstream desktops in capabilities and functionality.

“Alternative color choices have been making their way into notebook lines for some time now,” said Glenn Jystad, senior manager, desktop products, eMachines. “With the arrival of spring and summer, it’s the perfect time to introduce a fresh, clean alternative color choice to our desktops and monitors, bringing an exciting new look and feel to desktop PCs.”

Sporting a bright white glossy finish, eMachines brings a “smile” to customers, via a subtly swooping green LED and silver branding design, which can be found on the desktop cases and displays.

“The amount of thought and effort put into the aesthetics and new design features of the new desktops and monitors is significant,” said Jystad. “The price and capabilities are right on target, and the sleek ultra-modern design offers more style than many PCs costing twice as much.”

The Mini eMachines EL1300 Series is Big on Savings and Capabilities
Available this month, the small form factor eMachines EL1300 Series is currently available in two models, the $298 EL1300G-01w and the $398 EL1300G-02w, which includes a 20-inch widescreen LCD.

Small and light enough to fit just about anywhere, the EL1300 mini PC is perfect for students or general home use.
The result of this research has led to some really interesting news: the new All-in-one Acer Aspire Z5600 PC, characterized by its sought-after design, a spacious 24inch display and grand multimedia capability represents a current revolution in the world of PCs and it is engineered to maximize the full promise of the next operating system from Microsoft called Windows 7. Apart from the many refinements of Windows 7 over Vista, the Aspire Z5600 offers full touch screen capability at an affordable price. No longer do users have to be limited to the use of keyboard and mouse controls or be restricted with expensive propriety touch implementations, with the Windows 7 touch capability, users may freely alternate control of the PC with mouse or touch at their ergonomically enhanced leisure.

The miniaturization of internal components has allowed the all hardware to be placed on the rear of the LCD display. The result is an All-in-one device that merges power and elegance in a streamlined device. The new Aspire Z5600 is a mainstream affordable PC that guarantees elevated functionality thanks to the latest generation of Intel processors and spacious HDD capacity of up to 2TB. The latest generation of MXM graphic processors ensures optimum multimedia performance.

The Acer Aspire Z5600 is perfect for complimenting the most sophisticated environments and can be easily positioned in any room of your residence, from the lounge to the study or a child’s room. The new silver Aspire Z5600 is an entire digital entertainment system that integrates all the necessities of a true rich multimedia PC; including TV tuner to watch and record favorites television programs, integrated webcam for video calls to keep in touch with relatives and friends, and an incorporated DVD/Blu-Ray player/writer combo for playing back or burning movies, music and video.

The 24inch touch screen guarantees an extremely instantaneous and intuitive recreational and professional multimedia experience. With the simple touch of a finger it’s possible to select, to browse through files, start applications and to navigate menu options to manage data, audio, video and image files. At any time, the touch screen option can be easily converted and the Aspire Z5600 can be used like a general mouse and keyboard PC.

As well as a grown-up processor (admittedly not one that will cause Alienware fearful chills), you get a full-sized, ergonomically-curved keyboard, WiFi b/g, a SuperMulti DVD-R/RW drive and ATI Radeon x1200 graphics (with up to 1919MB of ATI HyperMemory). Strangely, despite the extra case room, the eMD620 drops a USB port over the usual netbook total, having just two.

Obviously some will prefer the super-portability of a netbook, but you can’t argue with the price. The eMachines eMD620-5777 is available today from Best Buy stores.

Press Release:

IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 30, 2008 – The eMachines eMD620-5777 debuts today, giving consumers all the essentials of mobile computing at the incredibly affordable price of only $429.99.

The new notebook combines the latest in popular and useful features with trusted technology, making it ideal for challenging coursework, multimedia school projects, home productivity, research and staying in touch.

“The new eMachines is a great way for customers to get everything they need in a notebook at a really exceptional price – something that’s welcome in today’s challenging financial climate,” said Ray Sawall, senior product manager for Acer. “The new eMachines eMD620-5777 notebook is ideal for students, families, small business professionals and anyone on a budget who wants to enjoy the benefits of mobile computing. Plus, the new eMachines eMD620-5777 notebook gives families an affordable way to get an additional PC in their home, without having to set aside a dedicated space for it.”

With a fast AMD Athlon™ 2650e processor (1.6GHz, 512MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB) and a full 1 GB of DDR2 memory, the eMachines eMD620-5777 is ready to perform on the go. It also features integrated ATI Radeon x1200 graphics, with up to 1919MB of ATI’s HyperMemory, so video and graphics look great.

The notebook’s size is designed with portability in mind. Its 14.1-inch widescreen display is perfect for watching DVD movies and viewing multiple applications at once, yet the chassis is still compact enough to comfortable carry in a backpack or book bag. Also, staying in touch on the go and is a snap with the notebook’s 802.11b/g WiFi wireless that connects to hot spots and wireless networks on campus, at home and at many popular restaurants and hotels.

After projects for home and school are complete, students and their families can enjoy digital media hobbies, entertainment and games. The Super Multi-format DVD-R/RW drive plays DVD movies and can burn music, video, photos and other content to DVDs or CDs using the preinstalled Corel WinDVD and NTI CD/DVD Maker software. Consumers can store and share their digital media with the notebook’s large 160GB hard drive and a Super Multi-format Dual-layer DVD-RW drive.

Listening to music and movie audio is enjoyable with the notebook’s high-definition audio support with two built-in stereo speakers, headphone/speaker jack and microphone jack. Plus, two USB 2.0 ports make it easy to connect popular peripherals and digital media devices, such as MP3 players, cameras and camcorders.

Useful software abounds on the eMachines eMD620-5777 notebook. It comes with Windows Vista Home Basic for fast handling of applications. The notebook also comes preinstalled with eMachines GameZone – a sampling of popular online games as well as Adobe Reader for reading PDFs, and Microsoft Works 8.5 with Office Home and Student 2007 Trial for productivity. To keep customers safe, the notebook also comes with a 60-day trial of Norton 360 Version 2.0.

Pricing, Availability and Warranty

The eMachines eMD620-5777 will be sold by Best Buy beginning Nov. 1, 2008 at the price of $429.99.

IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 10, 2008 – Weighing in at just one-third the size of a traditional PC, the new super compact eMachines EL1200 Desktop Series PCs pack as much computing power as most mainstream full size towers, without taking up limited desk space or much out of consumers’ wallets. Starting at less than $300, the EL1200 Series is an extreme value that’s sure to surprise and please many a shopper this holiday season.

The budget-friendly eMachines EL1200 is powerful enough for homework assignments or managing household finance programs, offering everything consumers need to get online, check email and Watch YouTube videos from any room in the house.

“The extreme value of the eMachines EL 1200 is undeniable,” said Glenn Jystad, senior manager, desktop products. “The ability to purchase a powerful, well-equipped PC for less than $300 is sure to be a welcome option for consumers tightening their budgets in today’s tough economic climate.”

Stylish, Space Saving Design
Today PCs are being integrated into main living areas such as kitchens and family rooms, so small form factor PCs are perfect for the family den, studio apartments, dorm rooms, smaller bedrooms and home offices.

Forty percent smaller and 55 percent lighter than eMachines’ smallest tower PC, the EL 1200 is right at home next to the phone on a kitchen counter, where it can serve as the family’s digital hub, providing easy and quick access to family photos, address books and calendars, online recipes, email and traffic and weather reports.

Parents buying a PC for a child will appreciate the EL 1200′s price and ability to fit into a small bedroom. Its powerful capabilities and rich graphics deliver fast frame rates and great image quality, easily tackling games and video applications with ease.

Students needing a PC will appreciate its blend of affordability, functionality and size. Stowed away on a bookshelf, it’s ideal for smaller apartments and cramped dorm rooms.
Sleek Multimedia and Entertainment Center

Popular multimedia activities, such as creating digital photo albums, uploading videos, and burning personalized music or photo disks are handled with ease. Even connecting to an HDTV is easy via its standard HDMI port, and high-quality audio is delivered with the included set of amplified stereo speakers.

Its sleek design includes a flip down door that hides the optical disk drive, keeping it free from dust and debris. The 14-in-one media reader provides fast transfer of videos, photos, and music, and seven USB ports provide quick connections to printers and other consumer electronics.

Roomy hard drives provide ample space for storing digital photo, video and music libraries. And for quick backups or additional storage, a built-in eSATA port provides a fast connection to external drives.

Smaller Design is Environmentally Responsible
Available with an innovative low-power 15 watt CPU, the energy efficient EL1200 uses less energy than a standard desktop PC. Its low power consumption also helps prolong component life and service costs.
