Color us frustrated: Sharp have put together a gorgeous mixture of touchscreen, tilting display and full-QWERTY keyboard, and wasted the whole thing by limiting it to e-dictionary and media playback duties. The Sharp RD-PM10 has a 4.3-inch WQVGA touchscreen, FM radio and 8GB of onboard storage, but lacks WiFi or Bluetooth or indeed any sort of internet software.

Since media playback and checking the meaning of words doesn’t exactly tax a system, Sharp have bypassed Intel’s Atom platform and gone straight to TI’s DaVinci TMS320DM6441 processor; under the custom UI there’s Windows CE 5.0 and 128 kinds of dictionary content. The whole thing measures a reasonably-pocketable 5.5 x 3.1 x 1.0 inches, weighs 11.5oz and has a microSD card slot to augment storage.

There are also stereo speakers, an FM radio, a 3,500mAh battery and broad media codec support that includes DivX, Xvid and OGG. Sharp are asking 360,000 KRW ($288) for the RD-PM10 in Korea. We have no expectations of seeing this e-dictionary anywhere near the western markets.

If imitation is the greatest form of flattery, then Apple must be one of the most flattered company’s to date. Latest to “borrow” some of the Cupertino industrial design is Korean firm Hanuribiz, whose nurian X40 may only be an electronic dictionary and part-time PMP, but does it all in a slick little MacBook Air suit.

Inside the wannabe-unibody casing there’s a thirteen-language dictionary with native-speaker voices, together with audio/video playback and a text and image viewer. Once you’ve learned a few new words you can tune in the FM radio and be thoroughly confused by all the local music, too; Hanuribiz throw in a voice recorder too.

The Hanuribiz nurian X40 electronic dictionary will be available in Korea come early March. It’s expected to cost between 300,000 KRW and 400,000 KRW ($202 to $269); don’t hold your breath for a launch in the US or Europe.

If you frequently travel abroad and have not mastered all the languages of the world, you may want to pick up the Nurian X-35 to help tackle any language barriers. This electronic dictionary will help with translations for example English to Korean, Korean to English, Chinese to English, and English to Chinese.

The Nurian X-35 offers definitions in 13 different languages, including Korean, English, Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Spain, Italian, Thailand, Portuguese, Russian, Vietnamese and Indonesian to fit many of the most common situations. If that is not enough the Nurian X-35 also features authentic native-speaker voice on search results so accents do not get in the way.

This device also features audio and video playback, though we are not sure what video may be used for. If having a dictionary just seems a bit boring to you, you will be happy to know that this device also includes an integrated FM radio, text/image viewer and voice recording capability. Looks like all Nurian X-35 is missing are games like solitaire and Mine Sweeper. Maybe someone will come up with an emulator of some kind in the future? Anyone?

Digitalcube’s i-station UDIC may look like a mini-convertible UMPC, but in actual fact it’s an electronic dictionary. Still, that doesn’t really do the handheld device justice: it’s a dictionary with 50 languages, as well as text-to-speech, “native speakers” pronunciation guides and the i-TRANS translating service. Available in two versions, both have hard-drives: one 30GB, the other 60GB. AVING have been playing with the i-station recently and have made a video of the device in action; check it out after the cut.

The 4.3-inch display is a touchscreen that can be reversed and folded flat to the QWERTY keyboard. Digitalcube have also included the Video DIC movie captioning service. The whole thing is powered by an Alchemy AU 1250 CPU and DVE (Dynamic Video Engine). Pricing is 398,000(KRW) ($397) for the 30GB version and 448,000(KRW) ($447) for the 60GB.

Frankly, while an electronic dictionary is all well and good, the i-station UDIC is just crying out for some wireless connectivity. Imagine it as a potential rival to Sony’s mylo 2, packing instant messaging, email and internet access over a WiFi or Bluetooth link. Digitalcube could definitely find buyers outside of Korea.
