The ASUS S101 luxury netbook will launch in the US on November 1st, priced at $699.  That's the latest news on the hotly-anticipated high-end Eee PC, which eschews the usual netbook frugality to instead offer basic internet, email and general connectivity in a super-portable package.  Your $699 gets you a 0.75-inch thick chassis in "copper brown" or "graphite", both with chromed accents, while under the hood it's the usual 1.6GHz Atom and 1GB of RAM. The Eee PC will get at least two touchscreen variants announced in early 2009, with both convertible and standard notebook form-factor designs being explored.  That's the latest news from ASUS CEO Jerry Shen, who has been sharing some more details about what's become the largest netbook range on the market.  As well as the touchscreen models, ASUS have obviously decided to take Steve Ballmer at his word and miss Windows Vista out completely; instead, they're planning to introduce Windows 7 to netbooks in the second half of 2009. The ASUS Eee All-in-One Touchscreen PC (aka the Eee Monitor, aka the Eee Top) may be still listed as pre-order only at retailers, but that doesn't seem to have stopped EeePCnews.de from getting some hands-on video of the 15.6-inch desktop PC.  Like the netbooks, it looks to prize usability over anything complex, with the so-called EasyMode touchable GUI on top of Windows XP. ASUS plan to unveil their touchscreen Eee PC at CES 2009 in January, with a launch early in the new year, according to Samson Hu, general manager of Eee PC business at the company.  No specific details of what format the touchscreen Eee will take have been released; ASUS could choose to add a touch-sensitive panel to the screen of an existing netbook (similar to the aftermarket mods we've seen) or it could develop a new Eee Slate PC. ASUS S101 Reviewed: Appealing but where’s the spec boost?

, Oct 7th 2008 Discuss [2]

It's turning into a whole day of the ASUS S101, but we can't quite get enough of what's proving to be ASUS' slickest netbook yet.  After the live shots and the press shots, we now have the review; Mobile Computer Mag have the luxury netbook (an oxymoron, you'd think) on their bench, and put it through its paces compared to what lesser models have to offer. Five second boot mod for ASUS Eee PC

, Oct 6th 2008 Discuss [7]

Netbooks would be a whole lot more believable as companion devices if they switched on as fast as, say, a smartphone or PDA.  However the combination of Intel's Atom and generally wheezing specs tend to make starting-up - or resuming from standby - measure more around the one minute mark than anything less.  Two Intel engineers might be looking to change all that, though; at a recent Linux conference, they demonstrated an ASUS Eee PC that could boot to a Fedora desktop in just five seconds.
