Acer: We’ll take half the netbook market in 2009

, Nov 3rd 2008 Discuss [0]

When ASUS president Jerry Shen said on Friday that the company would take 30-percent of the netbook market in 2009, most people nodded sagely, looked at the sales figures for the Eee PC and agreed that it was entirely possible.  Now, Acer are upping the stakes with their own predictions, and they're even more ambitious: company president Gianfranco Lanci has said that Acer will take 40 to 50-percent of the netbook market next year, and they're envisaging it being even bigger. ASUS predict $200 Eee PC netbook in 2009; focusing on 10-inch models

, Oct 31st 2008 Discuss [0]

ASUS president Jerry Shen has been doing some more netbook soothsaying, as the company announces its Q3 2008 financial performance.  Of most interest to us is the double-whammy that Shen predicts a $200 Eee PC sometime in 2009, as well as the phasing out of 7 and 8.9-inch models in favor of more 10-inch netbooks.  That way, the president believes, ASUS will be able to take a full 30-percent of the netbook market next year, estimated at between 6 and 7.5 million units. Windows 7 installed on ASUS Eee PC 1000H & MSI Wind: Video Demo

, Oct 31st 2008 Discuss [5]

One of the more topical claims from Microsoft during the PDC was that Windows 7 would have no problems running on lower-spec hardware such as netbooks.  Of course, there's nothing like a challenge to get geeks motivated, so we're starting to see the first installs of the upcoming OS on today's budget ultraportable hardware.  Laptop Mag picked the ASUS Eee PC 1000H, while DavGerm4 used his MSI Wind (you can see the video after the cut; via jkkmobile); both are tentatively positive about the experience. ASUS Eee PC 1002HA: S101 style, 1000-series price

, Oct 27th 2008 Discuss [0]

ASUS Eee PC S101 steal your heart but the current financial unpleasantness steal your cash?  How about some of the "luxury" netbook's styling at a slightly more affordable price, in the shape of the ASUS Eee PC 1002HA.  Weight and overall bulk is down compared to the 1000H, partly because the battery is also much reduced: apparently ASUS have gone for a two-cell, 4200mAh pack.  Other specs are predictable: Intel Atom 1.6GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM and 160GB hard-drive. SlashGear Week in Review – Week 43 2008

, Oct 26th 2008 Discuss [0]

We kicked off the week with some high-profile reviews here at SlashGear, putting the latest MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops through their paces.  If you’re considering one of these slick new machines – or are wondering what style features other manufacturers will be copying over the next six months – make sure to check them out!  We also played with a more budget computing option in the shape of the ASUS Eee PC 1000HA.

Meanwhile cellphones have been on the test bench, with Sprint’s pair of new Samsungs – the messaging Rant and the musical HighNote – squaring up against Velocity Mobile’s 103 smartphone.  We had to leave our desks to try out Blackline’s GPS Snitch, however, but were back in before curfew to play with some toys: WowWee’s Bladestar remote control helicopter, for one, and a rather more unusual review of the WowWee Femisapien

Shipments of MSI's Wind netbook are predicted to reach 600,000 to 700,000 by end of year, according to a recent DigiTimes report, significantly higher than initial expectations of 500,000 units.  The sales push has been due to a surge in so-called "whitebox" vendors, who rebrand the netbook and sell it under a different name, in both Europe and Southeast Asia.
