AT&T’s Apple SIM lock-down undermines iPad LTE flexibility

AT&T’s Apple SIM lock-down undermines iPad LTE flexibility

Apple may be trying to further squeeze out the carriers with Apple SIM, its solution to allowing travelers the easiest access to iPad data plans on local networks, but that doesn't mean the carriers themselves are going to make it easy. While AT&T and others may be participating with Apple's multi-carrier SIM scheme, once they've got customers signed up they may not let them switch away as readily as the Cupertino firm envisaged. Indeed, AT&T has confirmed to SlashGear that if you initially pick its network, there's no going elsewhere on the same SIM.

EE TV promises DVR and on-demand harmony

Carrier EE is launching its own TV service, EE TV, promising to bring together free-to-air and on-demand content with smartphone and tablet viewing and control. The new set-top box, which will be offered free to EE's UK home broadband subscribers, claims to eschew the usual ugly and impenetrable user-interface of traditional cable boxes and instead borrow heavily from smartphones and tablets; meanwhile, those devices themselves can be used to navigate through the UI, with the EE TV app, and then "flick" content from mobile to TV.

EE DoubleSpeed LTE on test: Fast, if you can find it

EE's DoubleSpeed LTE launch was the big news of yesterday's event, promising roughly twice the 4G speed across twelve UK cities with no extra charge. It's the carrier's latest pre-emptive attempt to corner the high-speed mobile market before its rivals wade in with LTE of their own, so with theoretical peaks of as much 150Mbps, it only seemed fair to put the new DoubleSpeed service to the test. As we found, though, it's not quite so straightforward.

4G carrier EE has announced plans to double the speed of its UK LTE network, taking peak downloads to as much as 80Mbps+ in ten locations by summer 2013.
