EE doubling UK 4G speed: 80Mbps peak in ten city summer trial

4G carrier EE has announced plans to double the speed of its UK LTE network, taking peak downloads to as much as 80Mbps+ in ten locations by summer 2013. The "turbocharged 4G" trial - which, if successful, will see the network boost rolled out to all across EE's service - should see an average download rate per user of 20Mbps, the carrier says, and is part of a number of enhancements EE plans for its service in the near future. Phones 4u’s LIFE Mobile hits UK in March with EE’s help (but no 4G)

UK mobiles retailer Phones 4u will launch a new network, LIFE Mobile, in March 2013, using EE's network as its backbone, though subscribers will miss out on 4G support initially. The deal, EE's 25th MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) agreement, will at first offer only 2G/3G support to subscribers, presumably since the 4G carrier wants to keep its LTE goodness as an exclusive feature itself. UK 4G network EE will close 78 stores across the UK, the carrier has confirmed, as it pares back unneeded retail floorspace following the harmonized rebranding of T-Mobile and Orange locations. Telecoms regulator Ofcom has announced the seven bidders in the UK 4G spectrum auction, with the process itself set to kick off in January 2013 and networks potentially switching on midway through next year. Vodafone, Hutchinson 3G (aka Three), and Telefonica (aka O2), are all among the bidders, as well as Everything Everywhere which is currently the only UK network to offer commercial LTE service through its EE brand. UK wireless carrier EE has announced that it is now offering two new tablets to consumers as of today. The new tablets include the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 LTE and the Google Nexus 7. Apple's 4G-blessed iPad mini has gone on sale with UK carrier EE today, with the 7.9-inch tablet subsidized down to £50 ($80) if you're willing to commit to two years of LTE. The iPad mini WiFi + Cellular is offered with 3GB, 5GB, or 8GB of LTE data per month, priced at £25.99, £30.99, or £35.99 per month respectively. UK 4G carrier EE has quietly tweaked its mobile broadband plans, increasing the amount of data subscribers get per month by as much as 3GB. The new plans - which are also joined by a monthly rolling plan for those contract-averse - stick at the same price points as before, beginning at £15.99 on the 18-month agreement, but now offer a choice of 3GB, 5GB, or 8GB of LTE data.
