Apple has fired back at the Department of Justice over the allegations that it was price fixing ebooks with various publishers. Apple’s response is similar to MacMillan and Penguin, two of the publishers that are being targeted by the DOJ. Three other publishers have already decided to settle the case, breaking current contracts with Apple and having to renegotiate new ones.

What the DoJ’s Apple antitrust means for ebook prices
The work the Department of Justice is doing to take out what they see as a collusion on ebook pricing between publishers and Apple is meant, first and foremost, to create a fair market for consumers. As the DoJ finds the way that business is appearing to be done now to be illegal - with publishers setting prices for ebooks while the retailer takes a cut of the profit, things may make a flip in the very near future. Instead what the DoJ hopes to do is to keep the system in which the retailer sets the prices wherever they so choose, paying the publishers then a flat rate.

US ebook price fixing suit settlement detailed
Of the handful of massive publishers including Hachette, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, MacMillan, Penguin, and Apple, several have agreed to settlement terms with the US government. Not wishing to carry the case any longer than they have to, Hachette, HarperCollins and Simon & Schuster have agreed to file terms for a proposed settlement. This settlement will have them doing a list of actions to stay out of further litigation via the Department of Justice while the rest of the defendants continue the case. The Department of Justice aims to "ensure that e-books are affordable as possible" in this case by defending the law which prohibits conspiring by companies to keep prices on products artificially high.

NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight leaked
There's a new device coming to the world of e-readers and it's being delivered on the good ship Barnes & Noble. A bit of signage has been leaked to the public introducing a GlowLight-toting NOOK Simple Touch e-book reader, this effectively bringing an integrated frontlight to the simple e-reader market before the competition has the chance. This is a bit different from what the average tablet-owner knows as backlit, but will certainly have you reading in the dark much longer than your eyes could have otherwise stood on their own.

US sues Apple and publishers over ebook price fixing [Update: Full details]
Apple, along with publishers Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan and Penguin, is the target of a price- fixing antitrust lawsuit filed by the US government, alleging the companies colluded on the price of ebooks. The lawsuit was filed in New York district court, Bloomberg reports, and while full details of the suit are unknown, it’s believed that some of the publishers are chasing an early settlement. Apple could be sued by the DOJ over ebook price-fixing
I'm sure I'm not the only person that was more than a little irritated when Apple started offering e-books and came in disrupting the cheaper price model where the seller had more control over pricing. Originally, the price of a new title was roughly $10, but Apple allowed the publishers set the prices pushing some titles up to $15 or more. The Department of Justice is now investigating Apple for price-fixing.

NOOK Audio coming from Barnes and Noble soon
It appears that either Barnes & Noble played a very low-key April Fool's joke on unsuspecting NOOK lovers this week, or they're bringing a NOOK Audio device to the market very soon. What we're seeing today is a NOOK Audio model number OE250 page on Barnes & Noble thanks to intrepid searchers at The Digital Reader where they also note that the company filed for a trademark for that name all the way back in February (last month.) Will Barnes & Noble be releasing an MP3 player soon?

Harry Potter series now available as ebooks
If you’ve been wanting to read the Harry Potter novels on a Kindle or mobile device, then so far you’ve been out of luck. J. K. Rowling last year that ebooks of the Potter series would be available via Pottermore, promising an October launch for the service. While it didn’t make that date, it has officially launched today.

With the incredible resolution that is the Retina Display, a lot of critics are taking a closer microscopic look into the various apps and content that have been around since before the improved technology. One of the companies that has been given such a critical eye is Conde Nast for its digital publications. Obviously, digital magazines and newspapers are a huge industry for tablets, especially the iPad, since publishers see it as their big chance to remain relevant. But Conde Nast might not be doing such a good job of that.

Samsung ElectroWetting tech destroys e-ink in 2013
It's been announced this week by Samsung LCD Netherlands R & D Center (SNRC)'s Johan Feenstra that the company will begin mass production of their own next generation e-reader displays starting in 2013. Through the company that Samsung purchased specifically to make their own company bring such technology to the market, we've already had a glimpse of what was once just known as Liquavista's ElectroWetting display. This new-world e-reader-bound technology is able to not only display text and black and white images with great success and next to no power consumed, it's able to play videos and flip through pages of content without the relatively massive refresh time an e-ink display still does today.
