Apple’s eco-cred slated in Greenpeace data center report

Apple has been named the least green of tech companies in a controversial new Greenpeace evaluation, due to its use of energy from coal-fueled power stations. The league table – which ranks Yahoo! as the greenest company, followed by Google and Amazon – is part of Greenpeace’s “How Dirty is Your Data?” report that will be released today. It suggests that Apple’s new North Carolina data center – expected to be the epicenter of new MobileMe and cloud-based services – will triple the company’s electricity consumption.

UN Treaty Would Recognize “Mother Earth’s” Rights

Bolivia, which has enacted its own "Law of the Rights of Mother Earth", reflecting the beliefs of the indigenous people of that country, is seeking to bring those principles worldwide with a United Nations treaty. NASA Glory satellite suffers inglorious crash landing

A wet, unsatisfactory ending for NASA's Glory this morning, after a rocket casing malfunction saw the environmental observation satellite likely land in the South Pacific rather than reach orbit. According to the space agency, "the fairing, the protective shell atop the Taurus XL rocket, did not separate as expected about three minutes after launch." Windpower winners Vestas give $1.5m prize to runners-up

Wind turbine specialist Vestas has surprised the eco-energy community by giving away a $1.5m prize the company won for its green innovation to the unrewarded runners-up. Vestas - which is globally the largest windpower company - took first place in the Zayed Future Energy Prize, but company execs chose to redistribute the money after realising much smaller ventures would go without. The Energy Literacy Platform, a Tokyo-based startup, use compact ELP Modules which plug inline between appliances and AC sockets; they link wirelessly to an ELP Receiver that uploads stats to the ELP server.
