Dell has reported is Q1 2014 fiscal year earnings for the quarter, and things aren’t looking to grand for the sliding PC company. They only had a slight drop in revenue compared to last year, but income and EPS took a nose dive in the deep end, with as much as an 81% drop with the company’s EPS compared to the same time last year.

In total, Dell brought in $14.07 billion in revenue, but were only able to keep $372 million of it for themselves. This is down 51% from the same time last year, where they were able to profit $761 million. Operating profit also took a slide, down to $590 million from $1.01 billion from last year.

It’s certainly not a good end to what is possibly Dell’s last quarterly earnings report as the company is currently planning to go private again later this year, thanks to a generous loan from Microsoft, but it’s possible we could hear from them again in three months if the buyout doesn’t happen sooner.

Of course, Dell has mostly been spending its time making computers, but as the company admitted themselves, the PC industry is on the decline, and sooner or later the company is going to have to rethink their strategy if they want to remain in the black. Then again, a positive attitude is the biggest factor in success, right? Hopefully Dell can keep a smiling face on during these trying time.

According to HP, Dell has “a tough road ahead of them,” which could just be HP’s way of saying, “we’re coming after you,” but it seems that statement could go both ways. Dell’s own buyout could spell trouble for the company, but it’s ultimately a move that we’ll simply just have to wait and see how it turns out.

Sony has reported its fiscal year Q4 2012 quarterly earnings results, and the company ended up in the black for the first time in five years, earning its first full-year profit since their 2008 fiscal year. However, the increased income surprisingly comes after the company experienced lower revenues for its camera, gaming, and home entertainment products.

As for the figures, Sony raked in $458 million in net profit for the year on $72.35 billion of revenue during the 12-month period. Sony originally predicted a net profit of $404 million, so the company certainly did better than they expected at first. It certainly beats a $5.7 billion loss the previous year.

Sony reported lower sales of several different product categories, including compact cameras, LCD televisions, and PlayStation gaming consoles. The PlayStation department brought in only $18 million of operating profit for the company, while compact cameras brought in $15 million. TVs also saw a loss at $897 million.

However, Sony raked in $509 million of profit in their movie division, which was one of their most profitable categories for the year. Overall, Sony’s year-over-year revenue was boosted up 4.7%, and the company expects to turn a profit of over $500 million for this current fiscal year, as well as selling 42 million phones during the next 12 months.

At that point, it seemed that the electric car maker couldn’t make any more money, but it seems they proved us wrong, raking in more cash for the quarter, as well as profiting for the first time ever.

The company sold 4,900 vehicles during the three month period, raking in $562 million in revenue, which is up a whopping 83% from last quarter’s $306 million. After it was all said and done, Tesla profited $11 million, which is barely pocket change, but it marks the first time in the company’s ten-year history that they’ve finished in the black.

Throughout the first quarter, Tesla claims that they built “400 or more” Model S vehicles per week on average, and they beat their original guidance of 4,500 cars for the quarter, shipping almost 5,000 Model S cars during the past three months. The company also reduced the amount of time it takes to building a Model S, lowering that time by around 40%, which allowed them to build more units.

Currently, Tesla says that they’re receiving orders for new cars at a rate of around 20,000 per year globally. However, Tesla doesn’t sell cars outside of North America, but the company hinted that there is an interest in selling Model S cars to regions in Europe and Asia. The company made a lot of announcements this quarter, including a new financing plan and a new warranty program that aims for guaranteed customer satisfaction.

Electronic Arts has reported its Q4 2013 earnings, and the company boasted a $1.04 billion revenue, which is up from $977 million a year ago. Net income also saw a growth from last year, with $169 million in cold, hard profit for the quarter, compared to $56 million during the same quarter last year. However, it was the game sales that EA really wanted to show off.

Since the game’s launch in March, SimCity has sold over 1.6 million copies so far, even despite the fiasco that erupted during launch. EA says that half of these sales were from digital downloads, meaning that 800,000 copies of the game were sold through EA’s Origin gaming service alone, which is quite impressive.

As for other games that EA highlights, FIFA 13 has sold over 14.5 million copies in EA’s fiscal year 2013 so far, and EA says that Battlefield 3 Premium has over 3.5 million subscribers to date. As for the company’s latest iOS game, Real Racing 3 has seen more than 30 million downloads, and has been averaging over 2.5 million daily active users since its launch.

Despite all the hate that EA has been getting lately, including its “Worst Company in America” award for the second straight year, EA claims that they were the number one publisher in “Western retail markets” during the past quarter, as well as the number one publisher in the world when it comes to iOS games. Sales speak for themselves, we suppose.

Facebook has reported its Q1 2013 earnings today, and there seems to be mixed results across the board. The company scrounged up $1.46 billion in revenue, which is up 38% from the same quarter last year, but it’s not up to par from where the company was at over the summer. As for net profit, the company earned $312 million and earnings of 12 cents per share.

As for the social network’s user base, the latest figures show that mobile usage on Facebook is continuing to rise. The company boasts that 751 million users are accessing the social networking site via mobile devices, while only 665 daily users are visiting through the desktop. This is the second quarter in a row where mobile users have trumped desktop users.

As for advertising, Facebook says that $375 million of its advertising revenue came from mobile alone, while 30% of the company’s revenue this quarter came from advertising, proving that putting ads on their service is one of the most lucrative things that they’re doing, which means that users won’t see a slow down in the number of ads they see anytime soon.

As for the number of monthly active users on Facebook, the company has updated that number to 1.11 billion users, which is a 23% increase from the same time last year. As for Facebook’s 665 million daily active users, that’s up from 26% from the same quarter last year. It’s been interesting to see Facebook’s usage grow and grow, but we have to be approaching a point when they’ll hit a plateau. When will that be, exactly?

Hulu announced some specifics today on their streaming business during Q1 of this year. The company said that 1 million Hulu Plus subscribers came on board this quarter, surpassing 4 million subscribers total. The company also announced that during the three-month quarter, over 1 billion videos were streamed.

Hulu has seen its paid subscriber base exponentially grow since Q4 2010, when at the time it had around only 250,000 Hulu Plus subscribers. As for mobile viewing, Hulu says it’s “growing at a significant rate,” and they predict that it will account for around 15% of Hulu’s consumed videos this next year.

Another big step for Hulu is the announcement of two new original series, which the company hopes will allow them to compete more with Netflix and Amazon. Hulu announced Quick Draw and East Los High. Quick Draw is a comedy set in the western style in 1875, and the story revolves around a sheriff who wants to introduce the science of forensics to an unruly Kansas town.

As for East Los High, Hulu that it’s “not your typical high school,” but we have a slight feeling that it may be just that. The show follows around a group of teens as they explore romance and mystery. Sounds familiar, right? Release dates for the these two shows have not been announced yet, but we’ll see them premiere at some point this summer.

The company met its revenue expectations, however, with a guidance of between $15 billion and $16.6 billion that they set back in January. As for a breakdown of where the retail giant’s money came from, the US remains to be Amazon’s largest market, with $9.4 billion of sales revenue being from the US, with the rest of world ringing in at $6.7 billion.

As for expectations for the next quarter, Amazon is predicting revenues somewhere in the $14.5 billion and $16.2 billion range, or to rise between 13% and 26% compared with the same quarter last year. As for their operating income, they’re expecting another loss in the range of -$340 million and $10 million, compared to $107 million a year ago.

Amazon recently debuted 14 pilots from original series that they’re planning on running. However, only a few will make it through. According to the company, the shows that make it through will be entirely picked by the viewers based of feedback. All of them are available now to stream for free.

The company posted a revenue of $6.1 billion, which is up from $6.02 billion the previous quarter, and up a whopping 24% from the same quarter last year. However, net income took a 16% dip from last year, down to $1.87 billion.

The company’s operating income came in at $1.88 billion, which is up 24% from a year ago, but it’s down from $2.1 billion during the previous quarter. Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs said that the company “delivered another strong quarter as the worldwide adoption of smartphones continues.”

The company launched its new Snapdragon 600 and 800 chipsets during the quarter, which are being put to use most-notably in the US version of the Samsung GALAXY S 4 and the HTC First “Facebook phone.” Jacobs says that the company is “seeing strong traction” with the processors, and they “expect healthy growth in 3G and 3G/4G multimode devices around the world.”

As for shipments of Qualcomm chipsets, MSM-model chip shipments were at 173 million units for the quarter, which is up 14% from the same quarter last year, and down 5% from the previous quarter. As for Q3 2013, Qualcomm expects to bring in between $5.8 billion and $6.3 billion, and expects to ship between 163 million and 173 million MSM chips.

As expected (and a bit earlier than promised), Apple has announced its Q2 2013 earnings for this past quarter. The company raked in $43.6 billion in revenue and netted $9.5 billion of that for the quarter. Analysts had estimated that the company would bring in $41.82 billion in revenue, so it seems Apple did better than expected on that front.

The company’s $43.6 billion in revenue trumps its revenue from the same quarter last year, which was $39.2 billion. However, net profits were down from $11.6 billion in Q2 2012. These numbers represent a slow growth for Apple, and this marks one of the few times that Apple hasn’t seen huge gains, but nonetheless, the money is definitely there.

As for sales of products, Apple sold 37.4 million iPhones and 19.5 million iPads during the three months, which is up 6.55% and 65.25% year-over-year, respectively. A 65% gain is certainly respectable, but we have to give most of the credit to the recently-released iPad mini for bumping those numbers up quite a bit.

As expected, Mac sales went down to 3.95 million units sold during the quarter from last year’s 4 million, and iPod sales also continued on with their slow decline, down to 5.6 million iPods sold from last year’s 7.7 million. We can’t say we’re too surprised here, but the iPhone and iPad have been the dominating products for the company as of recently.

This quarter has certainly been decent for Apple with iPhone and iPad sales that eclipsed the company’s numbered from one year ago. While you’ll want to see the major numbers surrounding Apple’s massive $43.6 billion in revenue in an article just published on SlashGear a moment ago, you’ll find that Apple’s iPhone units sold aside it’s massive amount of iPads pushed in the past three months to be astounding on its own. This quarter’s results boasted a cool 19.5 million iPads sold and 37.4 million iPhones sold in the three months ending on March 30th, 2013.

Compared to the quarter that immediately preceded the quarter just reported, Apple sold a total of 22.9 million iPads and 47.8 million iPhones – that’s to be expected at least a bit as the first quarter Apple reports includes the 2012 holiday season. Apple’s results for the quarter including the three months reported here exactly one year ago has Apple bringing in cash from sales of 35.1 million iPhones and 11.8 million iPad units shipped.

This ramp-up is also beginning to fall into the category that includes consumers anticipating a new iPhone as rumors for the still unofficial iPhone 5S have been in full swing. Apple has been rumored to be creating a low-cost plastic-backed iPhone in the near future as well – both of these devices are, again, not yet made official or confirmed by Apple in any way at all.

Have a peek at more Apple action in our SlashGear Apple hub right this minute, and stay tuned as we continue to report on the Apple earnings today as they come in! With a massive “war chest” of $145 billion USD, Apple is certainly feeling confident here in the first half of 2013.

AT&T released its Q1 2013 quarterly earnings today, and the carrier added quite a few customers to its user base. 1.2 million smartphone customers signed on with AT&T during the quarter, with 296,000 postpaid customers being added on as well. As for financial results, the company netted $3.7 billion off of $31.36 billion in revenue.

Breaking down its customer base, AT&T says that 72% (or approximately 48.3 million of its customers) of the carrier’s on-contract subscribers are wielding smartphones. Overall, AT&T says that this has been the best first quarter that the company has ever seen as far as smartphone sales are concerned.

As for how AT&T earnings compared to the same time last year, the company experienced drops all across the board, but nothing significant. However, the company did see a rise in net income with a 3.2% gain compared to last year. As for total operating revenue, that was down 1.5% from $31.8 billion from a year ago.

AT&T’s wireless business saw big leaps, however, with a 21% rise in revenue compared to the same time last year. Total revenue for the carrier’s wireless business was $16.7 billion for the quarter, and net income was $4.66 billion, which is a 4% gain compared to last year. Overall, it seems AT&T made it through a rather successful quarter, especially for being a first quarter.

They surpassed $1 billion in revenue for the quarter, and added three million new subscribers, two million of which are US users, bringing the total number of global subscribers to 36 million.

During the quarter, US streaming brought in $639 million in revenue, with international streaming raking in $142 million. The company’s DVD business, while slowly falling off, is still seeing action, with $243 million in revenue. However, that’s down from $254 million during the previous quarter, as well as $320 million during the same time last year.

As for profit, Netflix experienced losses in both operating and net income categories, with a loss of $32 million and $3 million, respectively. The company noted in a letter to shareholders that the loss was due to an “extinguishment of debt” that was connected to a bond refinancing back in February. Without that, the company would’ve netted $19 million.

Netflix brought up the company’s own original series House of Cards, saying that the show gave the streaming company “confidence” in picking up shows that their users would enjoy. However, not as many people took advantage of Netflix’s free trial offer as they were expecting. It turns out only 8,000 people used the free trial offer to watch House of Cards.

The letter to shareholders also mentions a new monthly plan that Netflix is planning to launch soon. To accommodate larger families with multiple devices in the house, Netflix is going to launch a new $11.99-per-month plan that will allow users to stream content on four devices at once, which is up from two on the regular streaming plan. No date has been set, but Netflix says that less than 1% of its user base will take advantage of the new plan.

While the final outcome for Google is another massively successful quarter with $3.35 billion net income, Motorola has once again turned up as a sore spot. Motorola’s losses this quarter totaled a staggering $271 million, this comparing to a losses one year ago this same period set at $86 million. While it would, given just those results, appear that Motorola is a whole lot worse off with Google at the helm, the quarter immediately preceding the one just reported sits right up at the top with $353 million lost.

The situation is that Google is at a rather interesting place with Motorola, having made it clear that the company is still at a point where they’re running through products planned well before the big G began their ownership and promising big things in the near future. The quarter one year ago (shown above) was the last in which Motorola reported earnings as a stand-alone company. Now that Google owns them, they’ve entered a bit of a new age.

With Google continuing to bring the heat with their Nexus line of Android smartphones and tablet and the Motorola line of smartphones continuing to look more and more like Google-made products each new generation, we can expect big things from both companies in the near future. Once the Motorola lineup begins to be wholly Google-run, it’s quite likely that their combined forces will bring some new and exciting products to the market.

The biggest rumor to be floating about the Motorola mobile universe as of late is the fabled “X Phone”. This device is said to be much more of a Google-influenced device and will, if ever revealed, place Motorola in a prime position for Nexus-height success. Have a peek at our Motorola tag portal for more information on what’s come recently and what’ll be appearing soon!

Google is out with their first quarterly earnings report for 2013, and things are looking high and mighty for the Mountain View-based company. They ended up raking in a revenue of $14 billion during the three months, and ended up netting $3.35 billion. Compared to last year at this time, revenue is up a whopping 31%.

CEO Larry Page coined this quarter’s earnings as a “very strong start to 2013,” even though the company’s revenue and income have remained slightly stagnant over the past few quarters. Operating income for the company was $3.48 billion for the quarter, compared to last year’s $3.39 billion operating income during the same quarter.

As far as Google’s net income of $3.35 billion, this is a slight increase over the previous quarter’s $2.89 billion, and the company’s $14 billion revenue is slightly down from $14.42 billion during Q4 2012. As for the company’s cash on hand at the moment, we’re looking at just over $50 billion in the bank.

Page says that Google is “working hard and investing in [its] products that aim to improve billions of people’s lives all around the world.” As for Motorola, they experienced a bit of a drop off in revenue, posting just over $1 billion this quarter, compared to $1.51 billion during the previous quarter. The company also experienced an operating loss of $271 million. Ouch!

Microsoft has just reported its fiscal Q3 2013 quarterly earnings, and things are looking adequate for the company, which reports a revenue of $20.5 billion for the quarter, with a net income of $6.06 billion. The company also posted an operating income of $7.61 billion, which is up from $6.37 billion during this time last year.

Analysts had predicted Microsoft’s revenue to be $20.5 billion, and they were right on the money. The company’s revenue last quarter was $21.46 billion, so they didn’t do as well this quarter, but a positive income in the black is always a good thing. Microsoft’s Windows division did fairly well this quarter, bringing in $5.7 billion, compared to last year’s $4.3 billion.

The company’s Business division raked in $6.32 billion, while they’re Entertainment division brought in $2.53 billion. All three of these divisions saw a revenue increase compared to this time last year. CEO Steve Ballmer says that the company’s big bets were on “cloud services,” and he says those bets are paying off big time.

Overall, year-over-year changes were all in the positives, with Microsoft’s Entertainment division seeing the biggest increase of 56%. Along with today’s quarterly earnings, Microsoft announced that Peter Klein, who served as the company’s CFO for four years, is stepping down from the role. He spent 11 years at Microsoft.

However, despite the

It seems that Nokia has returned to the land of unprofitability this past quarter, as the company as posted a loss of €150 million ($196 million), with a total revenue for the quarter reaching €5.85 billion ($7.65 billion), which is down from €7.35 billion ($9.6 billion) during the same time last year.

However, despite the losses, Nokia Lumia sales have hit a record high of 5.6 million in Q1 2013. This is up from 4.4 million during the previous quarter. In the same quarter last year, Nokia only sold two million Lumia smartphones, so that’s less than double of what they’re selling now. Since shipping their first Windows Phone device in November 2011, Nokia has just under 20 million Lumias.

While Nokia’s financial state certainly wasn’t ideal this quarter, it’s definitely better than what it was last year during this time, where the company experienced an operating loss of €1.34 billion ($1.75 billion), so the company is certainly succeeding at digging themselves out of a deep hole, even with less revenue coming in this quarter.

However, Nokia isn’t doing so well in North America. The company only shipped 400,000 devices during Q1 2013, which down 33% from the same time last year where they shipped 700,000 handsets. All in all, Nokia says that Lumia sales increased in all regions of the world in Q1 2013 except North America.

Verizon didn’t do so hot during Q4 2012, but the company is back posting up their Q1 2013 results, and things are looking mighty good for the company. Verizon profited a whopping $4.8 billion during Q1 2013, and that’s mostly thanks to the addition of 677,000 new subscribers throughout the quarter, with 7.2 million smartphone activations.

Verizon is now up to 98.9 million subscribers total, which means it shouldn’t be too long before they reach the 100 million mark. Furthermore, the carrier activated 5.9 million LTE devices out of the 7.2 million total activations. Verizon also claims that 28% of all activations during the quarter were customers who came from other carriers.

As for Verizon’s other services, FiOS internet saw a bump of 188,000 new customers and 169,000 new FiOS Video customers, which rose the revenue of that particular sector of the company up $2.6 billion. And for those who thought that Verizon quit expanding FiOS will be pleased to know that they added fiber optics to 83,000 homes during the past quarter alone, with 217,000 more homes planned for 2013.

Total revenue for the company rang in at $29.4 billion, which is 4.2% increase year-over-year. Operating income grew 19.8% to $6.2 billion in Q1 2013, compared to $5.2 billion during the same time last year. $19.5 billion of that $29.4 billion revenue came from Verizon’s wireless business alone, which is up 6.8% from last year.

The company’s biggest drop was

Intel just reported their quarterly earnings for Q1 2013, and while there’s big money to be called out, things are down for the company compared to last quarter. Intel brought in a total revenue of $12.6 billion for the quarter, which is down 7% from $13.5 billion in Q4 2012. The company’s biggest drop was their operating income, which took a 20% dive down to $2.5 billion for the quarter.

Both net income and earnings per share were down 17% this quarter as well. Intel earned a net income of $2 billion, compared to $3.2 billion from the previous quarter. As for earnings per share, it’s at $0.40 for Q1 2013, compared to $0.48 during Q4 2012. Intel blames the slight losses on poor PC demand for the quarter.

The future for Intel is in question, with this being CEO Paul Otellini’s last earnings call, the company could change drastically by the time the next earnings report rolls around. Otellini will officially step down from Intel and retire next month. However, the change in CEO may not play much of a roll in the company’s revenue and profits, but we’ll ultimately have to wait and see.

As for the company’s predictions for next quarter’s earnings results, they’re expecting to bring in a revenue of $12.9 billion, give or take $500 million. They’re also predicting to have a gross margin percentage of 58%. Hopefully the company can meet that goal the next time around, and with the new 14nm technology they’re working on, we can’t see why they wouldn’t bring back an increased profit.

General Motors, maker of that awesome new Corvette, has reported its Q1 2013 sales figures, and it looks to be all good news. During the first quarter of this year, General Motors sold just under 665,000 vehicles, resulting in a 9.3% increase over the company’s total vehicles sales from Q1 2012. The company also recorded its best March sales in five years, selling almost 246,000 vehicles in just 31 days.

As for a breakdown of some of GM’s subsidiaries, Cadillac sales were up 38% from last year, while Buick was up 28%. GMC saw a 14% increase, and Chevrolet saw the smallest gain, with a 5% jump. Overall, GM saw an increase in sales across the board, which is no doubt a good sign for a company that recently found itself in a deep hole.

As for what types of cars have most popular during the past year, GM reports that crossover vehicles saw the biggest increase from last year, with a 25% jump, while trucks were up 10%. As for the folks who want more fuel-efficient vehicles, those numbers saw an increase, but not as much as you’d think — combined mini, small, and compact cars were up 14% from last year.

Unfortunately, GM didn’t report any of their financial earnings — just sales numbers this time around, but with such an impressive increase in sales, we have to guess that GM is slowly starting to make progress digging themselves out of that wretched hole. With the launch of the 2014 Corvette later this year, we should hopefully see GM further into the black as we go along in 2013.

BlackBerry released its quarterly earnings for its Q4 2013 fiscal quarter, and the company brought in $2.7 billion in revenue, with $94 million of that being cold-hard profit. This is up from $14 million during the last quarter. Furthermore, BlackBerry founder Mike Lazaridis — who was the company’s co-CEO until January 2012 — has announced that he’s leaving the company.

BlackBerry’s profit this quarter is quite surprising, but the company ended up losing three million subscribers over a three month period, which is now down to 76 million subscribers globally, compared to 79 million subscribers during the previous quarter and 80 million users the quarter before that.

BlackBerry ended up selling six million devices during its Q4 2013 quarter, with one million of those being BlackBerry 10 devices (a.k.a. the BlackBerry Z10). BlackBerry’s Q4 2013 ended on March 2 of this year, so the BlackBerry Z10 sales don’t account for the US and Canada launches of the new phone, so we should be seeing a healthy dose of Z10 sales during the company’s next earnings report in three months.

During the company’s earnings call, CEO Thorsten Heins says that BlackBerry’s newest QWERTY device, the Q10, will be releasing sometime next month. As for Lazaridis, he will be stepping down from his current position of Vice Chair of the Board on May 1, and will be leaving the company entirely to focus on his new Quantum Valley Investments venture.

Samsung has sold a lot of phones lately, including over 50 million Galaxy S III devices since its launch early last year. However, the company isn’t seeing a slowdown any time soon. It’s expected that Samsung’s Q1 2013 sales will hit record numbers yet again, even though demand hasn’t been as high as the company would like.

According to Hong Kong-based research company Counterpoint Research, Samsung has sold around 25 million smartphones each month so far this year, and that’s expected to drive the company’s quarterly sales to over 70 million units for Q1 2013. Samsung’s last earnings report showed a profit of $8 billion over those three months.

Samsung’s market share during January and February reached 35%, making them the largest smartphone manufacturer on the planet. Compared to Q4 2012, that’s a 3% increase in market share. With the upcoming release of Samsung’s GALAXY S 4, it’s possible that the company may even see a record Q2 2013 as well.

Back in January, it was estimated that Samsung would sell around 10 million GALAXY S 4 devices per month, and the company says that they want to sell at least 350 million smartphones in 2013, which is quite an ambitious goal. They eventually want to reach 500 million devices total for the year. The GALAXY S 4 is expected to early May at some point, with T-Mobile the only major carrier to offer a timeline.

Adobe has reported its quarterly earnings for Q1 2013 that ended on March 1. The company has made $1.008 billion during the past three months, exceeding its own expectations of $750 million to $1 billion for the quarter. The company also announced that it has passed 500,000 Creative Cloud paid subscribers, while free users are past the two-million mark.

Compared to last year, the company’s revenue dropped slightly this quarter compared to Q1 2012, which showed a $1.045 billion revenue during the three months. However, the company’s paid subscriptions to Creative Cloud could boost the company’s financial results in the long term, but it may take a few quarters for that boost to occur.

The company’s user base for Creative Cloud is quickly gaining steam, since the service passed the 1 million user mark back in December, and already that number is over double. It was quite the year for Adobe, with the launch of Creative Cloud and a new version of Creative Suite, dubbed CS6, which includes a ton of software for designers and developers.

As for Adobe’s income for the quarter, operating income chimed in at $98.2 million, and net income was $65.1 million on a GAAP basis. On a non-GAAP basis, operating income was $240.7 million while net income was $177.9 million. Not a bad quarter for the company, even considering its revenue is down just slightly from last year.

Best Buy announced its Q4 2013 (fiscal year) earnings today, and it’s not looking incredibly good. The company reported a net loss of $377 million with a revenue of $16.7 billion during the quarter. Compared to a year ago, Best Buy brought in a revenue of $16.67 billion with a net loss of $405 million, so the company actually did a tad bit better this time around, actually.

As for plans to buyout the company and take it private, founder Dick Schulze looks to be reneging on that proposal. Alongside the company’s quarterly earnings announcement, it announced that the deadline for Schulze to make an offer expired yesterday, which means that the company will “continue to focus on its transformation for the benefit of all of its stakeholders.”

We heard back in October that Schulze was working with different equity firms in order to make plans for a private buyout of the electronics retail chain. Buying out the company was said to cost around $11 billion. Schulze has previously stated that he could buy the company for $24-$26 per share, which would value the company between $8.16 billion and $8.84 billion. However, with debt added on, the total bill would round up to about $11 billion.

No reason was given as to why Schulze decided to back out, but there could have been numerous reasons to choose from, including cold feet or the failure in coming to an agreement with equity firms. Either way, it looks like Best Buy will remain a public company after all, and shareholders will still get to have their say in the company.

Barnes & Noble hasn’t been looking good lately, and the company’s Q3 2013 earnings that were announced today prove that something is going to have to change. Barnes & Noble reported a $6.1 million loss last quarter, which is a far cry from the $52 million the company netted during the same time last year.

As for revenue, Barnes & Noble made $2.2 billion during the quarter, which is down 8.8% year-over-year. As for NOOK sales, that division probably got hit the hardest, where revenue was down 26% compared to the same time last year, but as for digital content sales, the company saw a slight jump by 6.8%.

Of course, Barnes & Noble was expecting to take a big hit, so they’re about as surprised as we were (read: not surprised at all). NOOK made $316 million this past quarter, while the same time last year, it made $426.6 million. Overall, the company saw losses across the board, including their retail business, which saw a 10.3% decrease from last year.

However, it seems that the company may actually be changing things up a bit. Barnes & Noble founder Leonard Riggio is pondering the idea of buying the company back from shareholders, and shaking things up with the NOOK business — mostly throwing out the entire playbook and starting from scratch, but we’ll have to see what direction the company takes this year. It could be an interesting ride for B&N execs.

Tesla has been having a rough week with the whole New York Times fiasco, but it seems Elon Musk and company are going to put that all behind them as the company has reported its Q4 2012 earnings. Tesla made $306 million in revenue during the quarter, which is up a staggering 500% from the previous quarter.

The company has reported that they delivered around 2,400 Model S sedans during the fourth quarter and made a $12.7 million principal payment on their loan from the Department of Energy. However, they have total liabilities of $989.5 million, including $452.3 million in debt (ouch!). Nonetheless, they seem to be producing Model S units at a steady rate.

The company is producing around 400 vehicles per week. Over the quarter, they produced 2,750 vehicles and over 3,100 vehicles during the full year of 2012. The company says they’re at a point now where they can “reliably” produce 20,000 cars per year, which means that 2013 should be a big year for Tesla. During the first quarter alone, they want to ship 4,500 Model S cars.

The company has not released any solid sales numbers yet, but rather just delivery figures. They delivered 2,400 Model S cars during the quarter, which is a majority of the total number of vehicles they shipped for the whole year, which is around 2,650. The company is wanting to ship a total of around 20,000 vehicles in 2013, and expects to make its first profit this quarter.

Barnes & Noble will announce its Q3 2013 earnings next week, but things aren’t looking good for the book-selling franchise. The company expects a higher loss from its NOOK business for fiscal year 2013 than originally expected in January. The company didn’t reveal specific numbers, but their earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization showed a loss of $262 million for their fiscal year 2012, and they expect 2013 to be even worse.

The company also expects their NOOK revenue this year to be less than $3 billion, which means that the company didn’t have a very successful holiday season as well. The growing popularity of Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets and Apple’s iPad was at the expense of Barnes & Noble’s NOOK business, which ended up suffering during the busiest shopping time of the year.

Plus, if the company’s Q2 2013 earnings were bad, than Q3′s numbers must be plain miserable. Last quarter, Barnes & Noble sold fewer NOOK slates in its stores than previous quarters, and the company saw dips in revenue all across the board. NOOK revenue only account for just over 8% of the company’s total revenue that quarter.

Just before the turn of the new year, Barnes & Noble announced that British publishing company Pearson was going to invest $89.5 million in the NOOK business. We haven’t heard much about that deal since its announcement, but it’s possible that the company may bring it up at next week’s earnings call.

AOL reported its Q4 2012 quarterly earnings yesterday, and they revealed that the dial-up business is still alive and well, sadly. The company reported that during the quarter, they made $174.2 million for “subscription” services. This accounts for a whopping 29% of AOL’s total revenue for Q4 2012. If you ask us, that’s quite a huge chunk for services that should be obsolete by now.

Of course, revenue from subscribers is down 10% from the same time last year, in which AOL was raking in almost $200 million from dial-up customers, but their revenue saw a 4% growth from last year as well, proving that the company is slowly starting to see its dial-up business cut back a bit, and is earning more revenue elsewhere.

Then again, we shouldn’t be too surprised. While broadband internet is now the norm, there are sadly still some people who don’t have access to it, namely those who live rural areas. Of course, they could get satellite internet, but it’s really expensive for the speeds you get, and most people just end up going with dial-up for the time being.

AOL ended the year with a total revenue of $2.2 billion, and an operating income of $1.2 billion ($68.2 million for the quarter). As far as net income, the company scored $35.7 million for the quarter, and $1.05 billion for the fiscal year. It’s a little scary to hear that AOL’s revenue depended on subscriptions for 29% of it, but advertising made up a whopping 68% of their revenue, so they probably don’t have anything to worry about.

On the tail end of quarterly earnings, Sony has reported its financial earnings for Q4 2012 (Q3 2012 fiscal year). The company made a revenue of $22.4 billion, but recorded a net loss of $115 million. However, the company managed an operating profit of $534 million for the quarter, and they ended up in the black for the fiscal year.

This is the eighth straight quarter that Sony has reported a loss. Sales were down 15.1% from last year, which resulted in an 86.4% decrease in profits. However, currency conversions and the strength of different currency values lessened the blow, since the dollar, euro, and pound strengthened against the yen.

However, the company cut sales targets for most of its divisions, including gaming, televisions, tablets, and phones. As expected the PlayStation 3, Vita, and PSP took a big hit. Sony’s two portable handheld consoles combined for a fiscal-year estimate of 7 million, which is down 30% from the number projected back in November. Sony sold 2.7 million of the PSP and Vita during the third quarter.

Projected sales for TVs and cameras both fell by 1 million each. However, Sony’s PlayStation event is right around the corner, in which we might see the PlayStation 4 come to fruition. If that’s the case, this may the time to shine for Sony, but we’ll ultimately have to wait and see how they do as the year progresses.

This week HTC has revealed its Q4 2012 financial results with less than favorable comparisons to this same time last year, letting investors know that their strategy for hitting 2013 with a bang will be a relatively low starting price point for the Chinese mobile market. This strategy capitalizes on the massive growth potential for greater China and takes the power of the lower-tier market (still largely untapped in many regions around the world) to a whole new level. This set of announcements unfortunately still has HTC forecasting steady or falling margins through the immediate future.

It was none other than HTC’s Chief Financial Officer Chang Chia-Lin that spoke up on the conference call this week after the quarterly earnings report. He spoke about China’s potential and the fact that HTC would be focusing on more than the mid- to high-end models they’d been delivering throughout the country up until this point in history. The price point for the new less expensive devices, he said, would under-cut the least expensive device they’ve got on the market today.

With the lowest-tier device on the Chinese mobile market from HTC today being set at 1,999 yuan ($320), Chang made it clear that they are “going to go down, but not below 1,000.” He also let it be known that “we see there’s still room to play” with devices priced around 1,000 and 2,000 yuan. This opens HTC up to delivering more devices like the HTC One SV with a solid product delivery at a price that wont break the bank.

HTC has a flagship smartphone on the way as well, mind you, with a code-name delivery right this minute set as HTC M7. This device has also been tipped to be bringing on a brand new brand name for HTC’s upcoming camera technology with Ultrapixel replacing Megapixel. It’s going to be fun beyond all other things!

Facebook has beat expectations of its Q4 2012 earnings, recording a revenue of $1.59 billion, which is just above the expected $1.53 billion that the company would rake in. However, the social networking giant didn’t make much of a profit, and instead recorded only a net income of $64 million during the quarter.

Compared to figures a year ago, which were $1.13 billion in revenue and a profit of $302 million in Q4 2011, the company has seen some slight setbacks. After going public for the first time in 2012, the company’s stock hasn’t done too well. It’s never reached its initial $38 per share, but it has jumped by 30% within the last six months after it tanked.

As far as the company’s user base goes, they saw an average of 1.06 billion monthly active users, with 618 million of them being daily active users. What’s perhaps even more incredible is that their monthly active user count for those accessing the service on mobile devices was 680 million, surpassing the number of users using the web interface.

This marks the first time for Facebook where this has happened, and it’s proof that mobile devices are becoming more and more prevalent in people’s lives, continuing the speculation of whether or not we’re all in a post-PC era. We’re not sure when or if the mobile MAU will peak, but we’re guessing that this won’t be the last time that mobile usage has surpassed desktop usage.

This week the folks at Qualcomm have revealed earnings for their fiscal Q1 of 2013, offering rather positive news for shareholders: a better outlook for the rest of the year than previously expected. With announcements of the new Snapdragon 800 and 600 series processors earlier this month, Qualcomm has revealed that they’re now in a position that’s ripe for growth throughout the upcoming year: “We are pleased to be raising our revenue and earnings guidance for fiscal 2013.”

Qualcomm’s fiscal Q1 for 2013 included the months leading up to December 30, 2012, and included a fabulous $6.02 billion in revenue for the group, this representing a 29% boost compared to the same quarter one year ago. This is also a 24% upward trend compared to the company’s Q4 of 2012, that being the quarter that went directly before the one being reported today. Operating income for Q1 2013 went up 35% year-over-year to $2.09 billion USD while Net income came to $1.91 billion, that being 36% more than it was last year at this same time.

The operating cash flow reported by Qualcomm for this quarter was a mighty $1.98 billion USD, this equaling out to be 33 percent of revenues and a boost of 11% year-over-year. As far as Qualcomm’s “key business metrics” for the quarter go, MSM chip shipments were reported to have reached 182 million units, this representing a 17 percent growth in shipments compared to this same quarter one year ago. Total device sales for this quarter ended up being an amazing $53.3 billion USD total, that being 29% higher than it was one year ago.

This quarter also showed an estimated 233 to 237 million 3G/4G device shipments, each of these between the prices of $224 and $230 on average – that’s massive. Qualcomm has reported their cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities to have totaled $28.4 billion USD at the end of the quarter being reported here, this compared to $22 billion on year ago. Have a peek at the timeline below to see other recent Qualcomm accomplishments and big announcements to see where the company is headed in 2013 – up and up!

As expected, Amazon made a ton of money during Q4 2012, proving that the holiday season is Amazon’s most wonderful time of the year. The company pulled in revenues of $21.27 billion, thanks mostly to Kindle sales and ebook sales. However, Amazon also spent a lot during the quarter, and only profited $97 million out of all those billions.

Compared to a year ago, revenue was up a respectable 22% from $17.43 billion in Q4 2011. Operating income increased a whopping 56% to $405 million during the past quarter, compared to $260 million last year. However, net income took a huge hit this time around, dropping 45% from the same time last year with $97 million, compared to $177 million in Q4 2011.

However, it seems CEO Jeff Bezos was expecting these kinds of numbers. He says that “after 5 years, eBooks is a multi-billion dollar category” for the company, and it’s “growing fast.” Physical book sales have dropped, and Q4 2012 saw the “lowest December growth rate” in the company’s 17 years, up just 5%.

For the entire year, Amazon hit revenues of $61.09 billion, which is up 27% from $48.08 billion in 2011. Operating income decreased by 22% to $676 million, compared with $862 million in 2011. Overall, as far as 2012 profits go, Amazon actually lost $39 million altogether, compared with the net income of $631 million in 2011.

Microsoft‘s quarterly report is in, folks, and as expected, the company posted some impressive numbers. Microsoft reported revenues for Q2 2013 (fiscal year) at $21.56 billion, with pure profits reaching $6.38 billion for the quarter — up from $5.87 billion in profit a year ago and $5.31 billion last quarter.

Splitting the revenues up between the company’s different divisions, Windows accounted for almost $6 billion of the company’s revenues, which is up 24% from last year, and that’s mostly thanks to the release of Windows 8 back in late October. However, Microsoft’s business division saw a drop, with revenues down 10% to $5.7 billion year-over-year. The Server & Tools department’s revenue increased by 9% to $5.19 billion.

Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices division, which is responsible for the Xbox and Surface, saw an 11% decline from last year, with only $3.77 billion of revenue. This comes after Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 was the top-selling gaming console for two years straight. It looks like holiday sales weren’t as great as the company expected.

Microsoft’s Online Services division saw more growth, however, with $869 million in revenue, which is an 11% increase year-over-year. Thanks to the upcoming Office 365 suite and SkyDrive, Microsoft’s online services don’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon, especially with the deal that Microsoft made with the city of Chicago to bring Office 365 services to city employees.

Yesterday Apple announced new record results for their financial Q1 2013 including sales of iOS devices as well as overall revenue, and with those announcements came an invite from Tim Cook to employees for a town hall meeting being held this morning. This town hall meeting will likely be extremely similar to the meeting held last year at this time after the company released its 2012 Q1 financial results, question and answer session included. At the moment we’re not entirely sure if we’ll be seeing the results of this session or if it will be closed-door employees-only in the end.

This meeting will, on the other hand, be broadcast live throughout the Apple Cupertino campus as well as other Apple employee locations. This way as many Apple employees as possible can see the session and enjoy the large group hug that they’ve earned upon creating this record-breaking quarter. The full email, according to unnamed employees sending the mail into 9to5Mac, came through last night after the earnings call.

Team, We’ve just reported another record setting quarter, thanks to everyone’s incredible hard work and focus. We sold over 75 million iOS devices in the holiday quarter alone, which is a testament to the strength of Apple’s innovation. Please join me for an employee communications meeting tomorrow at 10 a.m. Pacific time in the auditorium of De Anza 3.

We’ve created a space on AppleWeb where you can submit your questions in advance, and we’ll do our best to answer as many of them as we can during the meeting. The meeting will be broadcast live throughout Cupertino and at many other Apple locations.

Please check AppleWeb for details.

Tim

Employees are able to send in questions before the event and answers will likely be made available based on their importance to the event – though live, we must expect, one way or the other. Apple’s earnings call included a Q and A session that revealed several interesting points including those surrounding the supply constraints in the iMac as well as the iPad mini, this accounting for less sales than Apple feels it would have been capable of otherwise.

Have a peek at the timeline below to see every bit of detail from the financial report released yesterday as well as the Q and A that followed. Let us know if you’re expecting anything fantastical from the Town Hall meeting that’s occurring today, and be sure to stay tuned to our sizable Apple hub as well through the future!

As far as smartphone sales go, Nokia said it sold 15.9 million smartphones, including 4.4 million Lumia phones, during Q4 2012, which is down from 19.6 million a year ago. However, they sold a total of 86.4 million mobile phones altogether. In comparison with Apple, who announced their earnings yesterday, the Cupertino-based company sold almost 48 million iPhones during the last quarter, compared to Nokia’s 15.9 million in smartphone sales.

Perhaps the biggest hit that Nokia took this quarter was that the company sold only 4.6 million handsets in China, a 69% drop from a year ago, with sales revenue in the country down 79% to $284.4 million from the previous quarter. While Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said he was excited about the company reaching a profit, he cautioned that more cutbacks may be imminent.

Nokia had led the mobile phone market share for 14 years, with its global market share peaking at 40% in 2008, but Samsung recently overtook the once-dominant company as the world’s top mobile phone maker. However, Nokia’s “better than expected” sales of their new Lumia phones proved to be a huge help in getting the company into the black.

During Apple’s Q1 2013 earnings call today, Apple CEO Tim Cook says that the company sold over 2 million Apple TV units during the three-month quarter. This is a 60% increase year-over-year — in other words, Apple has sold a record amount of Apple TVs this last quarter than any other quarter before.

As he mentioned in the TV interview with Brian Williams a while back, television is “an area of intense interest” for Apple, and what was once a small niche for Apple, is now an area that the company wants to capitalize on. Cook says that “there is a lot we can contribute to the space,” but he resisted sharing any more information on the subject.

We’ve already heard plenty of rumors about an Apple television set, including hearsay that Sharp is working on some display panels for the rumored television, while Foxconn is said to be testing various models of the Apple television, including sizes that range from 46 inches to 55 inches. Obviously, we’re keeping the salt by our sides until we hear something from Apple, but it leaves us with many questions.

So, while we didn’t really get anymore information out of the Apple execs as far as their plans for a possible Apple television set, we were told that the television sector is something that Apple is at least interested in, so we wouldn’t be surprised if they ended up diving deep into the industry to supplement its Apple TV STB.

Today, Apple announced its Q1 2013 earnings (calendar year Q4 2012) today, and the company made a boat-load of cash — $54.5 billion in revenue and $13.1 billion in cold, hard profit. The company also sold 47.8 million iPhones and 22.9 million iPads during the three-month period. However, Apple only sold 4.1 million Macs, down from 5.2 million a year ago.

These numbers definitely hint at a post-PC world that we’re creeping up on. However, Apple notes that the lower Mac sales this past quarter were due to the constraints of the new iMacs that the company released in November and December. Had they been available sooner (and in more abundant supply), the company claims that Mac sales for Q1 2013 would have been much higher.

Either way, the post-PC world is still prevalent. 4.1 million Macs versus 47.8 million iPhones and 22.9 million iPads is quite a difference. On a per week basis, Mac sales were around 300,000 and 400,000 per week during the quarter, while the iPad was 1.7 million per week. Obviously, iPads are much cheaper than Macs, but we aren’t surprised that more and more people are using iPads for their daily needs.

Overall, Apple CEO Tim Cook says that “iMacs were down by 700,000 units year-over-year.” And not only do they blame that on the newer iMacs availability dates, but the company also “left the quarter with significant constraints on supplies.” If it had not been for the constraints, the company “would have had materially higher sales.”

Apple has once again baffled the smartphone market with their announcement of having sold a massive 47.8 million iPhones (including the iPhone 5 this time around) in a single quarter. This week Apple is making their first report of the year with numbers surrounding their fiscal Q1 2013, this representing the quarter that ended for them on December 29th, 2012. The iPhone segment alone represented a massive jump for the company as last year this same quarter Apple sold 37 million iPhone units across the board.

This quarter also represents a lovely jump for the iPad with 22.9 million units sold compared to just 15.4 million one year ago this same quarter. This is largely due to the iPad mini we must expect, while the iPhone’s jump is certainly due to the launch of the iPhone 5 and its fully-active status in this quarter’s reading.

The full financial results of this quarter include a massive 61 percent of all revenue for international sales, while average weekly revenue for the company jumped nearly a full billion dollars compared to one year ago with $4.2 billion per week. This report includes 12.7 million iPods sold compared to a slightly larger number a year ago at 15.4 million, letting us know that Apple’s sales aren’t all going up – some are merely adjusting, so to speak.

You’ll be able to see the full results of this quarter’s announcements through our own massive Apple hub right this minute if you check the must-read and daily news sections, with Apple letting the world know once again that they remain dominant. Let us know if you feel this quarter’s iPhone sales numbers represent what you expected them to sell now that the iPhone 5 is on the market and iOS 5 is running strong!

Q4 2012 earnings are rolling in, folks, and Netflix is the latest to report on their quarterly progress. The movie and TV-streaming company announced today that they gained 6 million new users during Q4, bringing the total number of users over 33 million, with 27 million users in the US alone. They also announced a Q4 revenue of $945 million, with $8 million of that being all profits.

Netflix had previously expected around 26 to 27 million US streaming subscribers, so the company’s goal was easily met, and as or international users overall, this time last year saw a rise of 1.9 million users during Q4 2011, so the service is certainly gaining steam, and from what Netflix has planned for this year, we think that steam will keep up for a while.

2012 was a big year for Netflix, and 2013 looks to be even bigger. The company plans to roll out two TV shows exclusive to Netflix: House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey, and an Arrested Development reboot, starring most of the original cast, including Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, and Will Arnett.

The company has also been continuously working on getting studios signed on to stream their movies and TV shows on Netflix. Just recently, they signed on Turner, Warner Bros., and even Disney. And along with the extra content that Netflix will provide starting this year, you can guarantee that their catalog will only continue to grow.

AMD has delivered its financial results for Q4 2012, and things aren’t looking too hot for the company as we head into 2013. While AMD reported revenues of $1.16 billion for the fourth quarter, that figure is down 9% sequentially and a significant 32% year-over-year. Not making things any better, AMD reported a net lost of $473 million for the quarter, with loss-per-share coming in at $0.63.

Things get somewhat better when looking at the non-GAAP figures for the quarter, but in that case, AMD still finds itself with an operating loss of $55 million, a net loss of of $114 million, and a loss-per-share amount that settles at $0.14. GAAP gross margin came in at 15% for the quarter, while non-GAAP gross margin was 39%. Computing Solutions was down 37% year-over, posting an operating loss of $323 million, while the company’s Graphics segment had an operating income of $22 million – seemingly one of the only bright spots in AMD’s report, but still down 15% year-over-year nonetheless. The declines for both were blamed on decreases in product shipments.

Unfortunately, this poor Q4 was indicative of a rough year in general for AMD. The company had a revenue of $5.42 billion for 2012 as a whole, which sounds excellent but is actually down 17% year-over-year. Similarly, the company suffered an operating loss of $1.06 billion for the year, with net loss hitting $1.18 billion and loss-per-share treading somewhat close to $2.00 at $1.60. It’s worth remembering that AMD began implementing the restructuring it announced after posting Q3′s poor results, so that took something of a toll on the company’s pocketbook at the end of the year.

Those restructuring efforts forced a lot of workers out of their jobs, but the hope is that AMD will post better financials for 2013 as a result. In the immediate future, however, AMD isn’t expecting things to improve at all. In Q1 2013, it expects revenues to fall another 9% sequentially (with a possible 3% swing either way), which would be even worse news for the already struggling company. Stay tuned.
