Time to reticulate some splines: SimCity 5 has been confirmed, with EA and Maxis announcing today that the much-anticipated title will arrive sometime in 2013.  Powered by Maxis' own proprietary GlassBox Engine, the game promises hitherto-unseen degrees of detail and minutiae, along with more social integration that means decisions one player makes about his city will impact on the running of his friends' elsewhere in the virtual world.

At nearly six years in production, hundreds of programmers, artists, contract workers, and writers, $200 million USD spent on the newest and grandest game by Electronic Arts' BioWare, Star Wars: The Old Republic is coming up now as the most expensive game to produce of all time. The Electronics Art studio BioWare hopes that the Old Republic will be able to grab all of that cash back on not only the $60 purchase price for the game as well as the $15 a month users will be paying to stay connected to the MMORPG's online servers. Nokia: Unlocked US Lumia 800 in February, 20 game EA deal incoming

Nokia has confirmed that the Lumia 800 will be coming to the US as an unlocked, SIM-free device in February, with the T-Mobile Lumia 710 going up for order on January 11. Meanwhile, Canadian would-be Nokians will be able to grab the Lumia 710 on Rogers and the Lumia 800 on TELUS, though release dates haven't been confirmed. The Finns are hoping to differentiate themselves from their Windows Phone platform-pals, too, with news that a deal with Electronic Arts (EA) will see twenty of the "most popular" titles from the publisher brought to Windows Phone, launching initially as Lumia exclusives.

EA Games $0.99 App Store sale begins

EA Games has kicked off its App Store games sale, offering dozens of iPhone and iPad apps for under a dollar as the company prepares for the holiday season. Titles in the promotion (which has started with a £0.69 sale in the UK, and is expected to spread to the US imminently) include FIFA 11, Mirror's Edge and Transformers: Dark of the Moon HD on the iPad, as well as Need for Speed Undercover, SimCity Deluxe and Ultimate Mortal Kombat on the iPhone. The video game is $9.99 for PS3 owners and 800 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360 gamers. The game seems to be based on the Crash Mode in Burnout Paradise. The game has six different locations for players to enjoy.

iPad fastest growing games platform as consoles shrink to 40%

The iPad is the fastest growing games platform, developers EA have suggested, with consoles now accounting for just 40-percent of the games industry. "Consoles used to be 80-percent of the industry as recently as 2000" CEO John Riccitiello told IndustryGamers. "Consoles today are 40% of the game industry, so what do we really have?" He argues that the rise in casual gaming has meant that the cyclical nature of the games industry is less of an issue.
