It would appear that Nintendo has returned to glory. Speaking up with a wide variety of unexpected announcements this year at E3 2014, Nintendo brought packed heat. If the company’s goal was to prove Family-friendly Nay-sayers wrong with titles and updates focused on all-ages in the face of their opponents, they’ve done so with flying colors. Nintendo presented nothing less than a full win.
This year at E3 2014, Xbox head Phil Spencer started the show with the following: "today we are dedicating our entire briefing to games." This presentation was to be a big change of attention for Microsoft, showing not only that the Xbox One was dedicated to games, but that Microsoft was dedicated to Xbox, not least of all with the singular vision of Phil Spencer.
The first thing I wrote about Destiny after I’d first began to play it was "Destiny is nothing if not gorgeous." This game immediately reminds one of Killzone: Shadow Fall once inside a map, but before you there, you’re given the impression that you’ve dropped into the wrong game. I thought this was supposed to be a first-person shooter - why am I picking facial features and hair color?
It’s not fun to watch video games with Twitch, apparently - so says Nintendo this week after lighting up E3 2014 with a load of games that’d otherwise give great confidence to its audience. This comes immediately after Sony let loose a new update for their PlayStation camera made specifically for streaming in the same fashion Twitch does, and right after E3 2014 was streamed in its entirety by Twitch.
After the PlayStation 4’s camera saw heavy usage with networks like Twitch for gaming broadcasts near the end of last year, Sony appears to have seen the light. The next update for Playroom will bring "Playroom Set Maker", an environment in which all manner of do-it-yourself video programs are encouraged. Of course now that Playroom is banned from Twitch, things may get a bit awkward.
Through the backlash of fans and being sued by a former employer of their CTO, Oculus rages on. The device is still not ready for prime time, but edges toward our homes at a slow clip. Oculus’ expectations for the first wave of units on sale to the public? “North of one million”.
Nintendo has had a major impact on E3 this year, coming to the gaming scene with Super Smash Bros updates that’ve inspired companies such as PDP to make high-quality 3rd-party products. PDP have created a set of "Replica GameCube Controllers" officially licensed by Nintendo in a variety of colors. Each of these Wii U-ready controllers is made with a theme from Super Smash Bros Wii U, a game coming to the market this holiday season.
