There’s a little bit of good and a whole lot of bad coming out of the tests that Consumer Reports have released on the 2011/2012 winter season’s most expensive and famous heater: the Dyson Hot. We’ve only spoken about this fan/heater one other time here on SlashGear because, quite simply, it costs WAY too much for the average consumer for what it provides. That said, Consumer Reports did give this fan a cut-up in addition to saying a couple of nice things about it in their most recent report which, in the end, told consumers to go ahead and buy something else instead.

Bernie Deitrick of CR noted that though the Dyson Hot heated the room faster than any other comparable space heater on the market, it also cost more than the rest as well: $400 is no joke when it comes to keeping your living room hot. On the other hand, this device did past the most important test of all: it does not catch fire when a terry cloth is placed on top of it and left for an extended period. The Dyson Hot does not get so hot that you’re unable to touch it, and also shuts off if you tip it over.

The only safety hazard that really matters in the whole situation here is the button-cell battery in the remote control which, if swallowed, could present safety risks to kids. After that, Consumer Reports continued to rip the fan a new one with talks of how “at its highest fan setting, the Dyson is one of the loudest space heaters we’ve ever tested.” Deitrick finalized the massacre with a nice suggestion for an alternative: the $120 TouchStone 500 Vortex Heat, available wherever fine TouchStone products are sold. Grab one now, or forever hold your Dyson and your empty pocketbook.

Dyson’s distinctive Air Multiplier fan has spawned a new version, and this time it wants to keep you toasty warm rather than cool you down. The Dyson Hot uses the same bladeless fan technology as its predecessors – hiding the impeller in the base, and channeling the air up through the arched top section so as to remove buffeting and the chance of accidentally slicing into your fingers – but adds a ceramic heating element that, the company promises, adds up to the most efficient way of warming your room.

A clever airfoil-shaped ramp around which the air is channelled, and an oscillating base – that can be tilted – add up to quieter, more effective heating. There’s also no unpleasant burning smell, which you can get from traditional bar heaters. Meanwhile, the Dyson Hot can also work as a regular fan for cool air, too.

A remote control, for adjusting temperature, airflow and turning on and off the oscillation, is included. It’s also slightly bowed and magnetic, so that it can be safely stored on top of the Hot itself rather than getting lost down the back of your sofa.

Unfortunately, all this heating goodness doesn’t come cheap. The Dyson Hot AM04 is available now, priced at £269.99 in the UK and $399.99 in the US. It comes in both silver and black/blue finishes.

In October of 2009 Dyson, the guy famous for new vacuums pulled the wraps off a new fan that has no blades called the Air Multiplier. The fan was cool and all, but the thing was very expensive with a smaller desktop version of the fan selling for $299.

That is a lot of scratch for a fan and I bet there were many folks that liked the idea of the bladeless fan, but wished it were cheaper. A knock off of the Air Multiplier has surfaced made by an Asian company called Abiko. The fan was on display at the Comex 2010 booth the company had.

The Abiko fan looks almost just like the Dyson offering with a different style intake vent and the lack of the Dyson logo being the only major visuals differences between the two. The Abiko fan is not that much cheaper though at $223. CNET News reports that the Abiko knock off can be found for about $50 each at wholesale. I might pay $50 for one, but at $223 they can keep it.

James Dyson isn’t the only one who can do unusual things with fan blades; Australian design student Benjamin McMahon has just won an award for his Ribbon Ceiling Fan, which not only looks far more impressive than a regular fan but is far more efficient. The helical loop moves air faster than standard blades, as well as spreading it out across the room rather than pushing it directly down.

That makes for more efficient cooling of the whole room, even though the fan itself is using the same amount of power as before. McMahon has designed it to be retro-fit compatible with existing ceiling fan hardware, too; the ribbon blade is suspended from five regular mounts.

No word on when we could see the ribbon ceiling fan up for sale, though McMahon does say he intends to commercialize the design.

Dyson has launched two new fans, using the same unusual blade-hidden design of the original Dyson Air Multiplier debuted back in October 2009. The AM01 desktop model is joined by the Dyson AM02 Tower Fan, a floor-standing unit with full-length air pushing abilities, and the Dyson AM03 Pedestal Fan, which basically takes the head unit from the AM01 and puts it on a free-standing mount.

As before, the AM02 and AM03 take the blades of regular fans and house them in the bottom part of the Dyson system. The fast-moving air is then ducted up and through the hooped “head” section; because there are no blades to chop at the air, the fans are quieter despite being stronger than traditional models. Both new models come with a remote control for easier use.

Both the AM02 and the AM03 are priced at £299.99 ($443), £100 more than the original AM01. The AM03 is only available in white/silver, while the AM02 will come in silver or blue. No word on when exactly they’ll go on sale, but you can register for more details.

I never thought vacuums were cool or particularly wanted a vacuum for any reason. In fact, I didn’t like using the vacuums I had. Once I bought a house with lots of hard floors and had messy kids the vacuum was suddenly a more important device. Being a gadget geek I naturally wanted the coolest and highest tech vacuum I could get, so I looked at Dyson vacuums.

The first Dyson vacuums were large and rather heavy even if they worked pretty well. Dyson has now unveiled a new vacuum cleaner called the City DC26 that is the smallest vacuum it has ever created. Apparently, vacuum god James Dyson has been designing the vacuum for five years.

The difficult part was making all the components inside the vacuum smaller while still providing the suction power of it full size brethren. The vacuum weighs 3.5kg and is set to hit the UK this weekend for £249.99. Presumably, it will hit America eventually.

While it might resemble an automatic blood pressure monitor for those with huge arms, or a pedestal-mounted personal Stargate, you’re actually looking at James Dyson’s latest rethink to domestic appliances. The Dyson Air Multiplier is the UK engineer’s attempt to replace the humble fan, dropping the blades into the base section and re-routing the air through the ring.

While that may sound like a gimmick, it does mean that there are no finger-hungry moving parts destined to slice up your children. The Air Multiplier should be quieter, too, since there’s no air-chopping that can cause “buffeting” in traditional fans.

Unfortunately the demo model Engadget were wafted with actually sounded more like a Dyson vacuum cleaner, and the Air Multiplier doesn’t come cheap. Dyson are asking $299.99 for the 10-inch model and $329.99 for the 12-inch; at prices like that, this could end up going the same way as the Dyson CR01/CR02 contrarotating washing machine.

Press Release:

SAY GOODBYE TO THE BLADE

James Dyson introduces the bladeless fan. No blades. No buffeting.

James Dyson, who for the past 30 years has continuously revolutionized the vacuum cleaner his attention to addressing the everyday fan. As a result, he has designed the Dyson Air MultiplierTM fan, which has no blades, but instead uses a unique technology to multiply air 15 industry through unprecedented advancements in airflow engineering, has turned times, expelling 119 gallons of smooth and uninterrupted air every second.

Until today, conventional electric fans have gone largely unchanged. The fundamental problem has remained the same for more than 125 years; the blades chop the air creating an uneven airflow and unpleasant buffeting.

Dyson’s fluid dynamics engineers spent four years running hundreds of simulations to precisely measure and optimize the machine’s aperture and airfoil-shaped ramp before perfecting Dyson’s Air Multiplier technology. Air fluctuations were mapped with Laser Doppler Anemometry, helping measure control the machine’s airflow.

“We realised that this inducement, or amplification, effect could be further enhanced by passing airflow over a ramp,” says Dyson. “And of course this was the point where the idea of a bladeless fan became a real possibility. Here was a way to create turbulent-free air and finally do away with blades.”

How it works: inducement and entrainment

Air is drawn into the base of the machine. The air is forced up into the loop amplifier and accelerated through the 1.3mm annular aperture, creating a jet of air that hugs the airfoil- shaped ramp. While exiting the loop amplifier, the jet pulls air from behind the fan into the airflow (inducement). At the same time, the surrounding air from the front and sides of the machine are forced into the air stream (entrainment), amplifying it 15 times. The result is a constant uninterrupted flow of cooling air.

The Dyson Air MultiplierTMfan is powered by an energy efficient brushless motor and air speed can be precisely adjusted with a dimmer switch. Conventional fans are wired to run at just two or three settings.

No blades mean no need for a grille and it’s safe and simple to clean.

And because its motor is at its base, the Dyson Air MultiplierTM fan can be tilted with a touch, unlike a conventional top-heavy fan, which needs to be positioned with two hands and can topple easily.

The Dyson Air MultiplierTM fan is available in two 10-inch models: blue & iron and silver & white with an MSRP of $299.99. A 12-inch model is available in silver & iron with an MSRP of $329.99. All three machines are available at The Conran Shop (NY), Luminaire (Chicago/Miami) and Twentieth (LA). To learn more about the Dyson Air MultiplierTM fan visit www.dyson.com.

If your father is Sir James Dyson, inventor of – among other things – the Dyson vacuum cleaner, you can either find a completely unrelated industry to work in or bite the bullet and try to innovate your way out his shadow. Jake Dyson chose the latter route, and came up with this: the Motorlight Wall. A remote-controlled lamp with adjustable iris, the Motorlight Wall can uniquely offer various spreads of light between 10 and 120 degrees.

Intended to be used either individually or, more dramatically, in sets, up to thirty Motorlight Wall units can be controlled – separately or together – by a single remote. As well as angle, brightness can be adjusted; the housing is available in five finishes: red, blue, black and white, plus a very Dyson-esque clear.

The Jake Dyson Motorlight Wall was meant to go on sale in November last year, priced at £249 ($394) with the remote at £28 ($44), but there’s no sign of a purchase option. It more recently stared in an art installation called “Focal Shift” at New York Design Week 09, in collaboration with artist Jason Bruges. Photos of that in the gallery below.

It is a revolutionary hand drier for public bathrooms that really kicks some hand drier butts. It blasts a sheet of clean unheated air at 400mph through a 0.3millimeter slit. The excess water from your hands will go through a disinfecting iodine resin filter and be dispersed as fine mist in the air rather than left around in unhealthy puddles or wiped away on pant legs. Continue on to see the other cool diagram of it disintegrating, I mean drying and disinfecting a pair of hands.
