Iomega external storage updated: media players, PVR expansion & more

Iomega has announced a number of new storage-based products, ranging from simple external hard-drives to media converters and DVR accessories. Most interesting are the Screenplay HD and the Media Xporter Drive. The former, shown here, is a hard-drive and media player, that hooks up to a HDTV and surround sound system (via HDMI) to play stored video; it’s priced at $199.5. The latter is intended for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, connecting via USB and automatically converting any AVI (or any of 20 other formats) media on its 160GB storage into files the console can recognise and play; it’s priced at $104.45.

SlashGear Week in Review – April 7th through April 13th

This was a long week with no major events occurring, but there were some pretty big announcements. For starters we have a new BitTorrent Set Top Box from Myka, no more will you have to waste power by leaving your entire computer running all night just to get the latest screener from FXG or aXXo, and this little set top box will do it for you and then play it right from its hard drive for added ease. Then there were rumors abound of Blockbuster potentially putting out a new Set Top Box to push their movies, TV Shows, and other content out to.

Myka – the set top box for those with lower moral standards

This set top box doesn’t work with your cable operator, it won’t DVR the latest episodes of House for you, and it isn’t licensed to work with NetFlix to stream movies to your TV. It will however allow you to legally, or illegally, download and play any and all video content you want.

SlingCatcher delayed – possibly until late this year

There was a gentleman who informed Engadget of a notice he received from SlingMedia informing him that the SlingCatcher was not up to Sling Media’s standards. So it has been delayed, Sling didn’t confirm the actual email that was sent, but did sort of confirm that it was going to be delayed citing QA concerns as the cause.

Toshiba REGZA line of LCDs gets 10 new models – they all have an unbelievable number of ports

I thought the number of ports on the back of a stereo or on the back of a nice desktop computer was a lot, apparently I was wrong. Some of the ports on these TV’s include 4 HDMI ports, 3 Ethernet jacks, 2 USB ports, FireWire, card readers, and even a wireless Bluetooth port.

SlingPlayer coming to iPhone? – Sling Media says probably

Dave Zatz over at Sling Media said they were definitely one of the first 100k people to download the recent iPhone SDK and that they have been looking at it in an effort to bring SlingPlayer to the iPhone. Sling Media has been looking for a way to get their coveted software on the iPhone for quite sometime, ever since last April in fact, and it looks like they might finally be able to pull it off.

Medusa HDMI Splitter – one input, multiple outputs, it’s a great thing

Apple Patents hint at DVR with EPG going into iPod soon

The patent drawrings below hint at Apple releasing DVR and EPG (Electronic Programmable Guide) technology into the wild. Now it doesn’t say iPod, so they could implement it into OS X, into Apple TV or into what clearly looks like an iPod in the drawings.

Tivo to develop next generation tru2Way Set-tops, screws the cable company

As an owner of a Tivo S3 DVR box, I have concerns regarding the widely-spread Switched Digital Video aka SDV utilized by Cable network to reduce bandwidth usage. TWC around my neighborhood is about to add 11 more HD channels to the lineup but the word on the street is, SDV may be deployed and possibly including with the newer addition of HD channels as well, Crap!.
