Sony nasne PVR delayed after hard-drive damage

Sony has confirmed that its nasne networked PVR has been delayed, blaming unexpected damage to internal components and a shortfall in quality inspections at the factory. nasne, which can stream live TV and recorded content from its integrated tuners and 500GB hard-drive to the PS3 and other hardware, was expected to go on sale this Thursday in Japan, but Sony now says there will be a postponement of unspecified length.

Fox, CBS, NBC sue Dish Network over commercial deleting feature

Fox, CBS, NBC sue Dish Network over commercial deleting feature

I knew the second Dish Network unveiled in its commercial deleting Auto Hop feature that networks would be suing. This is the feature that would go in after recording prime-time TV shows shows on a Dish Network DVR and delete commercials so users didn't have to fast-forward. Network executives are already calling the feature an attack on the ecosystem foreshadowing the inevitable lawsuits.

EchoStar HDT-610R is world’s slimmest FreeView STB

EchoStar might not be a big name in the UK, but they’re hoping to change that with the introduction of a new FreeView+ HD set-top box. The company says it’s the world’s slimmest FreeView coming in at 14mm thick. The HDT-610R packs a lot of tech into that 14mm too, as well as a familiar software interface and additional apps and services from the likes of BBC iPlayer and Box Office 365.

NBC not happy about Dish Network Auto Hop

Last week, we mentioned a new and interesting feature that Dish Network added to some of its DVRs. DISH Network adds automatic ad skipping to Hopper DVRs

The rise of TiVo and other digital video recorders foretold an apocalypse, a sweeping river of change that would destroy the television industry as we know it thanks to lowered commercial advertising revenue. Except it didn't - it just made it easier to skip those four Honda commercials interrupting Law & Order. Now DISH Network has taken it one step further, installing a feature on its Hopper DVRs that automatically bypasses commercials.

TiVo premiere DVRs turn up for pre-order packing 500GB

TiVo premiere DVRs turn up for pre-order packing 500GB

I'm firmly in the camp that you can never have enough storage inside your DVR. With the often miniscule price difference between hard drives with significant capacity differences, I think 500 GB should be the minimum. My junk DirecTV DVR only has 30 GB of storage space. If you're thinking about buying a TiVo Premiere DVR, there are some indications that a higher capacity device may be coming soon.
