skateit 4uIf you’re big into skating games, then you’ll be pleased to know that EA Games has just announced their Skate It! game for the Wii and Nintendo DS is now available to buy at a store near you.

The game lets you perform all sorts of skateboard moves just by flicking around the Wii Remote or by using the stylus on the DS. One particularly cool thing about the Wii version, however, is that you can use the Wii Balance Board to control the skateboard within the game. That definitely brings an element of realism to it.

The object of the game is to become Thrasher Magazine’s Skater of the Year. Sounds funny, but might also actually be kind of fun. At the very least, this skate-focused game further brings in a sporty feel to Nintendo consoles.

nintendo dsiNintendo have confirmed that the DSi will go on sale in Japan from Saturday, November 1st, and in overseas markets by the Summer of 2009.  The news, from company president Satoru Iwata, clarifies Nintendo’s previous statements that the DSi would not reach the US until “well into 2009″.  In Japan, the Nintendo DSi will retail for 18,900 Yen ($192).

nintendo dsiNintendo’s DSi has been a surprisingly controversial gaming launch, but something a whole lot of people agree is disappointing is that the handheld won’t reach the US until “well into” 2009.  Of course, that’s nothing particularly new when it comes to slick Japanese games hardware (or software for that matter), but Nintendo have laid a trap for anyone turning the usual salvation, the importer: DSi titles will be region-locked.

nintendo pedometer 1Nintendo’s DSi and DSi Shop aren’t the only new things coming for avid gamers; they’re also looking to bring some Wii-style “get off your fat cheeks and do some exercise” action courtesy of the new DSi Pedometer.  Confirming the information gleaned from a trade document earlier this week, the Nintendo Pedometer will connect wirelessly with the DSi and be used initially with a new game title, “Your Life Rhythm”.

Nintendo’s new DSi handheld, announced today, may be a bit more portable than its DS Lite predecessor – 12-percent thinner in fact – but if you’re expecting to use that portability to take it further afield for even more gaming then the estimated battery life ratings may be a disappointment.  While the DS Lite could last for 15-19hrs on a single charge at minimum brightness, that figure drops to 9-14hrs in the DSi; at highest brightness you’ll get a mere 3-4hrs from the DSi, whereas the DS Lite would have entertained you for 5-8hrs.

On Nintendo’s new Japanese site for the DSi there’s a photo viewer to compare the existing DS Lite handheld to its new DSi sibling.  SlashGear reader Sion extracted and pieced together the two images for us as a direct size comparison between old and new; as you can see, the new 640 x 480 3.25-inch screens on the DSi (left) are significantly bigger than the 3-inch displays on the DS Lite (right).

Nintendo has announced its new DSi, the update to the DS Lite, at the company’s Fall presentation in Japan earlier today.  As expected, it features the same dual-display clamshell layout as the DS (both larger at 3.25-inches, with the bottom display remaining a touchscreen) with additional media features: an external 3-megapixel camera, an internal video-call camera and an SD slot, together with internal storage.  The removal of the GBA cartridge slot has meant the DSi can be 12-percent thinner than the previous DS Lite.

Rumors seem to be drawn magnetically to Nintendo today, with both the DS and the Wii gaining coverage regarding their replacements.  The DS rumor is more imminent, with MCV claiming to have heard from a Japanese source that Nintendo plan to announce a new version of the handheld, complete with MP3 and camera functionality, on October 2nd at 5am GMT.

A European trade document indicates that a pedometer for the Nintendo DS is in the works. Whether or not this will actually meet production remains to be seen, but it would be an add-on for exercise oriented games.
