If Crüefest hasn’t made its way to your area, there’s a good chance that it will sometime in the near future. I had a chance to check it out a couple of weeks ago, and the bands put on a good show. You can now pick up another three-pack from some of the bands, plus a couple of singles from System of a Down.

Mötley Crüe “Face Down in the Dirt”

Buckcherry “Rescue Me”

Sixx:A.M. “Life Is Beautiful”

System of a Down “B.Y.O.B”

System of a Down “Toxicity”

The Crüefest tracks are going to only set you back $.99 for the next month, however, after that you’ll need to shell out $1.99 each. As for the System of a Down songs, they’ll run you the regular $1.99 price.

This week’s DLC for Rock Band is a little different from what we usually see. Normally we look forward to tracks that we’ve heard many times before, with the occasional new single thrown into the mix. However, this week we are treated to three brand new singles from different bands.

Scars on Broadway “They Say”

Staind “This Is It”

The New No2 “Yomp”

Testament “Electric Clown”

The first three tracks are all new singles that will be available at the same time (or before) you can buy the album. Electric Clown from Testament is the only track which isn’t brand spanking new. In fact, it was released way back in 1992. You can pick up Yomp for the low price of $.99, while the other three will set you back the usual $1.99.

The only song that is more difficult to play than Buckethead’s Jordan, would be Through the Fire and Flames by Dragonforce. Those of you who are up to the challenge will be able to download these songs sometime in August.

With Guitar Hero: World Tour coming later this year, I’d all but given up on having much more DLC for GH III. Sure, we know about the new Metallica album that’s coming, but that’s probably it, right? Nope, Activision is still churning out new tracks (albeit slowly) for their current game. Hit the jump for the list of tracks in the upcoming Virtuoso Pack.

Buckethead “Soothsayer”
Steve Vai “For the Love of God”
Joe Satriani “Surfing with the Alien”
Yes, that’s the very same Buckethead that melted your face with Jordan back on GH II. Yes, you are going to fail this song, a lot. The worst part is that you’ll have to play through a lot of mellow stuff before you start hitting the solos. The price for the pack wasn’t announced, though we’ll likely see the usual $6.25 price tag when it goes live later today.

I have to admit that my love for Metallica has been waning over the past several years. Not only has their music not been as great, but ever since they started promoting the suing of fans for downloading music, I’ve just not been as excited by their music. One place that I still enjoy hearing it is in both Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Well it looks like I might actually purchase their latest album, this time for Guitar Hero, marking the first time I’ve cared to obtain an entire Metallica album in a decade or so.

Their latest full studio release will debut on Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock at the same time it is available for purchase in stores. I’ll be interested to see how it sells in-game as opposed to traditional downloads via iTunes and such. Motley Crue had great success with releasing a single in Rock Band at the same time it became available on iTunes.

What is really interesting is that the album will also be available as DLC for Guitar Hero IV, which raises a few questions. If I buy this DLC for GH III, will I still need to purchase it again for IV? If not, then does this mean other DLC will transfer as well? If not, I think I’ll hold off on downloading this for a while.

“Summertime Blues” (Live at Leeds)

“Who Are You”

“Young Man Blues” (Live at Leeds)

This is definitely an awesome collection of classic rock right here. One of the only things missing that would complete this collection is Pinball Wizard, which we’ll be seeing in Rock Band 2. You can grab each track for $1.99, or get the full dozen for $19.99.

Yes, you read that right, Working man is on the list. However, this isn’t the same track you downloaded already, but rather an alternate version, which just so happens to me a master track. The other three songs are masters as well, and will set you back $1.99 each. Sorry guys, but no track pack this time around.

How many of you have seen the movie Top Gun? Now, of those people, how many of you had aspirations of one day flying your own F-14 Tomcat? If you answered yes to the first question but no to the second, you’re lying. Everyone wanted to fly a jet after that movie. That, and buy a motorcycle. Well since most of us didn’t actually live out that dream, we’ll just have to settle for downloading the movie’s theme song on Guitar Hero III.

That’s right, to celebrate the Fourth of July, Activision is releasing the Top Gun Anthem as a free (yes, free!) downloadable track. Do note that rocking out to this song won’t make you as cool as Tom Cruse was in that movie, but it’s about as close as you’ll get.

I have to say that I’m really digging all of this free DLC. Sure, it’s not a regular occurrence or anything, but I loves me some free tracks!

It seems that the merger between Activision and Blizzard is already beginning to bear fruit. So how does one combine two of the largest titles from each company into something cool for the masses? You release a World of Warcraft song for Guitar Hero.

Yet another free track is set to be released today for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Guitar Hero III. The new track is “I Am Murloc” by Level 70 Elite Tauren Chieftain.

The track was written for last year’s BlizzCon event, and is a fairly amusing song from the perspective of one of the most annoying characters in the game. Personally I would have rather liked “Rogues Do It From Behind” but a free track is a free track.

I was born in the 80′s, which means I did most of my growing up in the 90′s listening to alternative music. I’ve really been happy that Rock Band has been bringing back some of the songs I know and love so that a new generation can really enjoy them. I listened to a good bit of Offspring back in the day, which is why I’m happy to hear that they’re going to be adding more tracks to the game in the future.

Thanks to a brief announcement on the band’s website, we now know that some of their older songs are going to be hitting the Rock Band DLC soon. We don’t yet know when they’ll be coming down the pipeline, but I’m happy to hear that they’re coming at all. Six songs in all have been announced:

“Come Out And Play [Keep ‘Em Separated]“

“Self Esteem“

“Gone Away“

“All I Want“

“Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)“

”The Kids Aren‘t Alright

I hate watching commercials. I don’t watch much TV, and would like to get the most out of the times I do sit in front of the boob tube. This would be why most of what I watch is already pre-recorded, thanks to a DVR. However, commercials do serve a purpose. Not only do they inform potential customers of products and services for sale, they also leak the occasional bit of unannounced news.

While I haven’t seen this recent commercial myself, apparently you can catch a glimpse of four DLC tracks for Rock Band on an ad which promoted the MTV2 track pack. The four tracks are listed below.

“Aesthetics of Hate” by Machine Head

I’m always up for some new Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails. I can’t say that I’ve heard of Machine Head though. I could have sworn that was an awesome song by Bush. (Yes, I know that the spelling is slightly different, but it really was an awesome song)

So we’ve all been waiting around to hear the announcement of when the album “Who’s Next” will be showing up on Rock Band. I know that I was pretty surprised when the first full album ended up being from the Cars. Well, while Harmonix has made no official announcements on the matter, we may have found a cause for the delay, straight from the mouth of Pete Townshend himself. Hit the jump for a quote.

Who’s Next, it turns out, is no longer a complete set of masters. An entire side has been stolen from our vaults at some point. These things happen. Someone, somewhere, has it in a cupboard and is waiting for us to die? What then?”

Without a full set of masters, it’s next to impossible to add this album into Rock Band. Sure, they could use covers, but Harmonix knows that it wouldn’t be the same. There hasn’t been any official word from the crew at HMX, but I’ll see if I can’t get in touch with them for their thoughts.

With all of the DLC that is released for Rock Band every week, people are really starting to wonder where all the tracks for Guitar Hero III are. Well don’t worry, while they aren’t nearly as numerous as the competition, Activision does have five track packs which will be up for download this month.

‘

The first two track packs are the Motorhead Track Pack and Isle of Wight. No, Isle of Wight isn’t some strange band you’ve never heard of, but rather a rock festival that happened back in 2007. The available tracks are listed below along with the date released.

(June 5) Motörhead Track Pack

“(We Are) The Road Crew”

“Stay Clean”

“Motörhead”

(June 12) Isle of Wight Track Pack

Kasabian “Shoot the Runner”

Kaiser Chiefs “I Predict a Riot”

The Sex Pistols “Problems”

The Motorhead pack will set you back $6.25, however, we’re not entirely sure how much the other will run. There will also be three other track packs released this month, we’ll keep you posted as we receive the info.

You’re probably scratching your head, much the same as I did when I heard this news. I even loaded up some of their music to confirm that yes, there is a lot of piano in their music. Fear not though,Violet Hill, which will be the first track to hit GH, has a fair bit of guitar.

I checked out the video for the song on YouTube, and while I don’t necessarily think that the guitar is going to be all that difficult, it’s really not a bad tune. We should probably expect to see this around the same time as their new album is launched, which is June 17.

Xbox 360 rockers snagged their own free track for Guitar Hero III some time ago. Well, it’s finally time for PS3 gamers to have their day, and their own free track. We recently told you that there would be a free God of War track up for download in the near future, and today is that day. Hit the jump for a sneak peak video featuring the song.

The End Begins (to Rock) sounds like it will be a blast to play. Xbox 360 players are out of luck, so I wouldn’t even bother watching that video to see how much rocking you’re going to miss out on.

While I can certainly understand why these tracks wouldn’t be seen on another platform, I’m not a big fan of exclusives. Since the game is on both PS3 and Xbox 360, hopefully they won’t start making other non-gaming tracks exclusive to one platform or the other.

Tomorrow is Tuesday, and you’re in luck. You aren’t just going to have one track pack available to download, but Harmonix is feeling particularly saucy and tossing up tracks from both Jimmy Buffett and Disturbed for your rocking pleasure. Hit the jump for the track listing.

Jimmy Buffett “Margaritaville”

Jimmy Buffett “Cheeseburger In Paradise”

Jimmy Buffett “Volcano”

Disturbed “Indestructible”

Disturbed “Inside The Fire”

Disturbed “Perfect Insanity”

All six of these tracks are master recordings, however, Jimmy Buffett re-recorded all three of his songs just for Rock Band, so don’t expect the same old Cheeseburger In Paradise. His track pack will go for the standard $5.49 (440 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360) with individual songs at $1.99 (160 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360) each.

If Disturbed is more your thing and you’re thinking about buying the CD, your best bet is to head over to Best Buy and grab it. If you do, you’ll be able to download two of the three songs for free in Rock Band. Only Perfect Insanity isn’t included. Those not buying the album can still download them at a nice price, as the pack will set you back only $2.99 (240 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360) or $.99 per track (80 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360).

Remember back when I told you that Motley Crue was releasing their latest single in Rock Band? Well, I’ve been wondering just how well it has sold, especially in comparison to iTunes sales. To say it sold well would be an understatement.

Here’s a few numbers for you to crunch; the new single Saints of Los Angeles sold around 10,000 copies through the combined efforts of iTunes and Amazon. I don’t keep track of how well songs sell, so I’m just going to guess that it sold rather well. Now if we look at just how many times it was downloaded via the Xbox 360 for Rock Band, you’ll see that it did slightly better, clocking in at 47,000 downloads.

I’m no mathematician, but I’d say that those are some respectable numbers. I don’t doubt that we’ll see more and more bands opting to release singles via Rock Band in the future.

I’m not sure if you can technically consider any of these tracks to be “exclusive” to Europe per se, since they are actually being released in the US first. I’m sure that some European gamers will be a little upset at that fact, however, I’m all for the tracks being available to everyone. Then again I’m all for games getting released everywhere at the same time, but we all know that’ll never happen. The tracks will run you the usual $1.99 (160 Microsoft Points) each.

Once you’ve done that, you know you can make it through the rest of the week, because we all know that Monday is the worst day.
Blondie “Hanging On The Telephone”

The Clash “Train in Vain (Stand by Me)”

Sonic Youth “Kool Thing”

This has to be one of the first times that a trio of songs has been available in a pack together without actually having some cool nickname. Oh well, these three master tracks will be available for the usual $1.99 per track (160 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360) or $5.49 (440 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360) for the whole deal.

They say that the best things in life are free, and that’s usually true. Even if you don’t agree with that statement, you have to admit that getting free stuff is awesome. If you’re looking for some free Rock Band tracks, and happen to be a big fan of South Park, you’re in for a treat.

It has been announced that if you purchase the upcoming DVD set of South Park Season 11, you’ll also get a trio of exclusive tracks for Rock Band for free. I’m really not sure what to expect for the tracks. Perhaps an extended version of the theme song by Primus? Who knows.

While the thought of free tracks is appealing, I don’t think I’ll be cashing in on this deal. In case you didn’t know, the entire South Park catalog is available for free here. Mind you that these aren’t rips hosted by some random group, but totally legit episodes hosted by Comedy Central. Those bonus tracks would have to be pretty awesome to make me want to purchase a DVD set just to get them.

One of the games that really caught people off guard last year was Portal. I remember thinking that it was going to be some simple game that I would forget soon after playing. However, it was just as much fun as any of the other games in the Orange Box. While it didn’t last long, people are producing new levels for it all the time, and today I’ve discovered an awesome collection of new custom levels.

I don’t know if you’ve ever played the Flash version of Portal. It’s by no means an official game, but rather the work of dedicated fans. It’s really fun and will probably kill up to an hour of your time. Well the guys that created the Flash version have converted all 40 levels into maps that you can play in the actual game.

They suspect that you’ll get a good 3 to 4 hours of gameplay out of these new maps. If you’ve got some time to kill and are craving some Portal, this is definitely a good way to supplement the game. Head over here to grab the data.

Unfortunately, with so much music to choose from, it’s also something of a downside. Okay, so they’re not exactly twisting your arm to buy it, but you can easily spend a lot of money picking up extra tracks. However, thanks to a partnership with McDonald’s, you’ll be able to pick up some tracks on the cheap.

These three tracks are being offered up as the “Scene Pack” which will net you all three songs for the usual $5.49 (440 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360) or you can just grab the ones you like for $1.99 (160 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360) each.

I just got word yesterday that in this week’s DLC for Rock Band we’ll be seeing Zero from the Smashing Pumpkins. I’ve been waiting around to hear this news for a very long time. Sure, I’m a huge Pumpkins fan, but that’s not why. I’ve known about this particular song being being included in the game since I visited Harmonix last November. As a special weekend treat, I give you the first ever gameplay video of Zero for Rock Band after the jump.

You’ll note that the quality of the footage isn’t great, and the position of the camera is even worse. I really do apologize for this, but we were short on time, and weren’t able to properly setup our equipment before rocking out.

I’m over on the right rocking bass, my brother Eric is on the left covering your view of his lead guitar stylings and John Drake is rocking the drums. I don’t know if you guys have met John (you can see a previous interview with him here), but he actually plays the drums for a couple of bands, and will rock your socks of if you get the chance to play with him.

I loved playing this song, it’s been one of my favorite songs since Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness came out and it’s a blast to play. There’s one other song that we were able to play during our visit to the Star Chamber, however if I told you what it was, John would have to kill me.

Since Rock Band was announced last year, we’ve known that there would be much competition between it and the Guitar Hero franchise. I try to stay as neutral as possible, as each as their own strengths. We haven’t seen the competition heat up much lately, though I’m sure it will once either Guitar Hero Aerosmith or GH IV hits the market. However, we just told you last week that Def Leppard was releasing a new single through Guitar Hero, and now we hear that Mötley Crüe will be doing the same in Rock Band today.

This came as a bit of a surprise, since Harmonix had already announced the DLC pack for this week. However, Mötley Crüe fans will be excited to hear that “Saints of Los Angeles” will be up for download later today for only $0.99 (80 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360®). It is noted that this will be for a limited time, so the price may jump at a later time.

With these two bands releasing tracks before their albums debut, you have to wonder if this is going to be a trend of the future?

Lynyrd Skynyrd “Simple Man”

Alright, I’ll admit that I absolutely loath Message in a Bottle. That’s the song my friends would pick just to piss me off in GH II. Simple Man, however, is an awesome tune. You can bet that I’ll be downloading that one tomorrow. All three songs are master tracks. They’ll be $1.99 (160 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360) per track or $5.49 (440 Microsoft Points for Xbox 360) for the whole pack.

Free? Oh, that’s right, April Fool’s and all of that, right? Nope, it’s all legit. Perhaps they’ve decided to take the high road this year and instead of pranking people, they’re hooking them up with free tunes.

I have another theory though. The song is so awesome, that they are compelled to do everything in their power to get it into every single person’s house. It’s like trying to take over the world, only so much cooler.

If you’re an avid fan of the Halo franchise, you are no doubt awaiting the release of the Legendary Map Pack. While there is still a little less than a month to wait (April 15) before it is launched, Bungie has decided to stir up some excitement by letting you download their Heroic Map Pack for free.

Starting this Tuesday at 2 am you’ll be able to download the latest maps for your favorite FPS (well, for Halo 3 at least). Sure, plenty of you have likely already purchased the maps already, but for those that haven’t felt like dishing out the required $10, you’ll want to jump on this one.

For those that have recently purchased the Heroic Pack and are wondering about some kind of refund, I wouldn’t get your hopes up. There is no plan (that we’ve heard) of refunds, just some good clean (free) fun for those that haven’t paid already.

Black Tide “Shockwave”

Paramore “crushcrushcrush”

Serj Tankian “Beethoven’s C***”

These tracks are specially marked at $.99 (80 Microsoft points) for a limited time (no idea how limited though) as a part of the SXSW festival. I can’t say that I’ve heard these songs before, but I’m always up for some new tunes.
