If you’re familiar with jailbreaking, then you’re undoubtedly familiar with iOS hacker extraordinaire Pod2g, who’s responsible for the Absinth 2.0 release for iOS devices running iOS 5.1.1 back in May — his most recent endeavor. However, he’s been focusing on a slightly different area of iOS, and that’s app development. Pod2g released PodDJ today for the iPad.

We’ve seen plenty of DJ apps for the iPad in the past, but Pod2g claims that his app turns the iPad into “the most realistic virtual turntable you have ever seen,” allowing you to mix and scratch any track in your iTunes library. According to the description, PodDJ is the only app in the iTunes App Store “with which you can truly scratch on your iPad thanks to a brilliant touch to sound reactivity.”

PodDJ has been designed to provide you with an interface that’s both powerful and easy to use. The turntables and all the controls have been strategically placed so that your hands can navigate around each feature as quickly and easily as possible. PodDJ also claims to be the fastest scratching app in the App Store, boasting a sound output latency of just 5 milliseconds.

The app also offers zero latency cue points, so you’ll hear sound as soon as you hit the cue button, and it has zero latency key locks, which means that time shifting is applied at the source of the audio chain so you hear it instantly. Other features include transform buttons, BPM detection, turntable emulation, monitor output, and support for an external mixer. PodDJ will be available to download starting tomorrow. It will be priced at $5.99 during the first two days, and will go up to $7.99 until the end of January. After that, though, you’ll have to cough up $9.99.

DJing apps on the iPad are cool and all, but the touchscreen controls leave something to be desired. However, Ion Audio has launched a set of physical controls, such as knobs, turntables, and sliders, specifically for DJ apps on the touchscreen tablet, and it makes the experience way more tactile and realistic.

The company has come up with a small set of suction cup-equipped accessories that turn the iPad itself into a pair of decks and a mixer on the cheap. The unit that we took a look at consists of a slider control, two round discs for scratching, and two banks of three knobs each for all the fine tuning.

The suction cups feel pretty solid. Underneath, the spinners have what looks to be like the tip of a touchscreen stylus. It’s certainly nothing fancy, but it works. I ended up playing around with the knobs and controls, essentially proving to myself why I would be a terrible DJ, but they were fun to use, and were way more handy than just using the flat touchscreen.

Serious turntablists will probably want to steer clear, since it would be best to get an actual deck and mixer, but for those just wanting to have fun and need a little more tactile control, you may want to check these out. They work with a variety of DJ apps, such as Djay, Deej, and iDJ2GO. Ion Audio will sell the kit for only $40 starting in May.

Pioneer Electronics has added another new product to its DJ mixer line. The new product is called the DJM-2000nexus performance mixer. The device is designed to complement the recently released CDJ-2000nexus multiplayer. The new DJ mixer offers more mixing functions, including a Beat Slice and Sync Master function.

The DJ mixer also has Pioneer Pro DJ Link technology built-in. Other features include a 5.8-inch LCD multitouch panel with screen effects. The device also supports Beat Effects, and MIDI control capability. The DJ mixer can be linked using network cables with multiple Pro DJ Link enabled Pioneer CDJ players.

That connectivity allows the devices to share a single SD card with music files or USB storage. The device can also interface with up to two laptops that are running the Pioneer rekordbox music management software to allow two DJs to switch between performances. The DJM-2000nexus has excellent sound quality with an audio circuit clock using a highly stable crystal oscillator, and it uses noise reduction circuitry.

The mixer also has an integrated peak limiter to keep audio playing at maximum output while limiting distortion and preventing damage to the mixer. The mixer also has a Live Sampler allowing sound from microphone or master output to be recorded directly to the mixer and then sent out to a supported CDJ device for scratching or sampling. The DJM-2000nexus will be available in November for $2999.

Pioneer used larger jog wheels to allow the DJ more precise mixing and scratching, and the controller has multiple inputs for expandability and four-channel mixing capability. The DJ controller features Dual Decks allowing two tracks to be controlled at the same time to allow for scratching or recalling hot cues on both tracks as if they were performed on a single track. The controller also features Slip Mode.

That mode allows a song to be played silently during a performance loop, scratch, or hot cue and resumes audible playback of the song when the other operation ends. The controller also supports multiple FX mode and single FX mode. Other functions for the controller include the ability to set up to eight hot cue points for each deck and a vertical waveform display for tempo synchronization.

The controller has a number of other features and ships with the Serato DJ software. The DDJ-SX has dual CD and phono/line inputs for external devices and two inputs for microphones. It also features two master outputs with XLR and RCA capability. The controller will ship in November at an MSRP of $1199.

Pioneer is big in the DJ controller business and has numerous products to its credit. One thing most of those products have in common is that they are far from cheap. Most of the pioneer gear we talk about for DJs isn’t something that the entry-level person just getting into the art is likely to be able to afford. Pioneer has unveiled a new DJ controller called the DDJ-WeGo that it says is the most affordable DJ controller it has ever offered.

The controller ships with Virtual DJ Limited Edition DJ software. That software allows the user to perform with music stored on a Windows PC or a Mac. The DJ controller is available with five different body colors including white, black, red, green, and violet. The device has multicolored LED backlighting on the jog wheel and the user interface of the DJ software included can be color customize to match the DJ controller.

This controller is designed to be easy for beginners to learn and has multiple features. Features include Jog FX to bind multiple effects to the jog wheel. Pulse Control provides visual prompts with a variety of colored lights on the jog wheels with lights for mix pulse, launch pulse, and FX pulse.

The device gets power from the USB connection on a computer so it doesn’t need an external power supply. It features integrated audio ports allowing for high quality input and output of different sounds. The controller also features an integrated soundcard for extended music storage and portability. The design for the controller makes it physically small and weighs less than 4 pounds. Pioneer will launch the controller in September at an MSRP of $399.

Pioneer has unveiled a new wireless DJ system that lets DJs create music with fewer wires. Pioneer Electronics claims that the XDJ-Aero is the industry’s first Wi-Fi DJ system that offers the ability to wirelessly play music tracks from smart devices, including smartphones, tablets, and notebook computers. Using the DJ device the user can mix and arrange music tracks stored on smart devices via Wi-Fi.

The system also supports USB devices and computers using the included DJ software. The XDJ-Aero is also able to create its own wireless access point when Wi-Fi isn’t available allowing connectivity with portable devices. That means if you’re playing somewhere where there is no external Wi-Fi network, you can still connect to your digital music on your smartphone.

The DJ system can identify up to four separate devices as sources for music playback. The included software is called rekordbox. The DJ system has audio ports for connecting other sources, including pioneer CJ players, and the system can be used as a standalone two-channel mixer. Pioneer includes multiple jog controls, audio effects, and other features into the system.

Features of the XDJ-Aero include a Jog Drum for manipulating samples. Sample Launch has four integrated sounds such as scratch, horn, siren, and laser. The Beat Effect adds four additional sound effects including Trans, Flanger, Echo, and Roll. The final main feature is a Sound Color Filter. The XDJ-Aero will launch this month at an MSRP of $1399.

A combination speaker system and dual-deck docking station, the DJ-Dock takes two iPhones or iPods in its rotatable bays – which can be swiveled for either a user standing behind, or positioned for communal control at a party – and includes integrated lighting effects.

Connectivity includes USB and and aux-in port, for use with non-Apple media players, and there’s an included remote control which can be used to switch between the lighting modes. A microphone input is also supplied, and there’s support for the Algoriddim djay app for iPhone and iPod touch. T

Speakers consist of 2-inch tweeters and 5.25-inch woofers, and there’s an FM tuner if you’ve got nothing worth listening to on your phone.

Pioneer has revealed its latest double-punch hardware/software combo for budding digital DJs, with the new RMX-1000 controller that also doubles as an effects and sampling station. Operating as a tactile USB controller for Pioneer’s VST and AU DJ software, and as a standalone effects/sampler system when you’re out of your studio, there are multiple preset effects banks that can be user-programmed or loaded up with celebrity DJ configurations.

Pioneer will offer downloads of presets by DJs Chuckie, Kissy Sell Out, Kutski, James Zabiela, Doorly, and Laidback Luke, and the macro buttons will mean traditionally complex sounds can be created far more easily. Presets themselves can be stored to an SD card, with the ten access buttons arrayed around a knob for wet/dry control.

There’s also X-Pad sampling, borrowed from the DJM-900nexus, various Cut/Add, Trans/Roll and Gate/Drive dynamic effects, and quantized sampling. Ports include an RCA and 6.33 mm input and an RCA and 6.33 mm output, along with a USB port, and the controller measures in at 334 x 157 x 57 mm and 1.3kg.

Opinion seems split between those who think the flexibility is going to be very handy, and those who think it’s just another watering-down of DJing. The Pioneer RMX-1000 is expected to go on sale in May 2012, priced at £599/€699 ($942).

You digital maniacs of music can dash out to the online store right this second and unload because Numark has officially started shipping their N4 four-channel DJ controller with built-in mixer and timecode. This beast has more capabilities and features “than any other controller in its class” along with high-resolution 14-bit MIDI for responses so tight you’ll have to loosen your belt a bit. And with the price this unit is selling at, you’ll have to put your eyeballs back in your head before you start tapping and turning, believe it!

This device has four decks of software control as well as a mixer that works without or with a computer in tangent. The N4 comes with Serato DJ Intro software as well as a four-deck version of none other than Virtual DJ LE, and is created “with the mobile DJ in mind,” so says Numark Product Manager Chris Roman. Up top there’s a collection of large touch-sensitive panels, four decks of software control with looping and effects controls, and a USB audio interface with a massively comprehensive mixer section with gain and EQ.

External sources galore are supported including but not limited to external turntables, CD players, MP3 players, and compatible smartphones. You’re able to switch between four deck of software to two decks of software and two channels of external source on this new standard for four-channel DJ controllers in this class. Once this device shows up in your local retailer you’ll be seeing it hit for MSRP of $699 and an estimated street price of $499. Find a retailer of this beast now with Numark’s retail locator or simply call up your favorite store and have em bring it in!

There’s been no lack of musical instruments being announced this week at the 2012 edition of NAMM pops up on the circuit, Numark bringing one fantastically amazing looking DJ station to the scene complete with iPad integration. This device was showed off at the Media Preview Day for NAMM and features a gigantic slot right in the center where your iPad or iPad 2 fits in nicely, controlling the whole show. You’re meant to use this station with the Algoriddim djay app which we’ve also, lucky you, taken a hands-on look at last year. This massive station is made to take that experience to a whole new level.

The Numark IDJ station has nudge/scratch jogwheels, buttons for looping, pitch controls, and the whole shebang besides. You’ve got volume knobs all around, buttons for the programming, and full integration with the already diverse djay app. This unit is made for consumers mainly, but certainly has nothing large holding it back from being used in a professional party environment.

This unit is made of both a brushed alminum and semitransparent plastic so lighted controls can brighten up your world on the fly. Capacitive touch-activated platters work with Hot Cues and retro-styled aluminum bits across the board for a powerful experience for everyone from beginners to veteran musicians. This device has a dedicated RCA 1/4 input, is Airplay compatible, and has a lovely dedicated music-library scroll knob of which it’s quite proud of. This device does not yet have a release date or a price, but we can expect it inside 2012 for sure!

Check out this fabulous hands-on video with Numark’s product manager Chris Roman courtesy of the folks over at DigitalDJTips – note that although the unit isn’t fully working as of yet, it’s pretty much a final look at the hardware.

If you’ve got an eye for precise control over the beats you are bringing to the table and your table is already full of a billion other controller already, you may well be looking for the new Faderfox DS3, as controlling a Traktor near you. This controller is ready to work with Traktor OR whatever else you want to reprogram it to do, switching at a tap between four different devices on the fly. This controller is both ultra compact and ultra powerful in its simplicity, triggering your loops, effects, and samples with the greatest of ease.

With the Faderfox DS3, you can switch between four devices, yes, but you’ll also have four multifunctional encoders. You’ll have access to all of your FX, deck, and loop parameters via 6 group buttons, and dedicated FX assign buttons allow you to switch between 4 FX busses. You’ve got a loop recorder section with encoder and two buttons — and from here you’ve got an additional copy function to any of your sample slots. Then of course there are buttons galore with a selection of 12 extra large, each made for sample trigger and hotcue access.

Every single control has a secondary function when you hold down your shift button, and a total of 31 LED lights and a 2-digit display show you all the various information and feedback data from your computer. In all you’ve got “about 750 commands” at your fingertips, each of them open to reassignment. This unit is currently listed for sale for 210 Euros, this ending up being right around $280 USD before shipping. Sound like the controller for you, or will you go with something like the $50 Lemur for iPad? I suppose that might depend on if you’ve got an iPad or not!

Pioneer continues to polish its virtual DJ controller line-up, with the latest DDJ-ERGO-V model packing so many LEDs you could probably outshine a half dozen glitterballs. Hooking up to your PC or Mac via a single USB connection, the DDJ-ERGO-V offers a pair of 115mm controllers, an integrated audio interface, the ability to control up to four decks from one unit, and various blinking light patterns to show you how well you’re doing on your mixing, beat matching and more.

For instance, Blue LEDs on the jog wheels show how close the mix phase is, pulsing more strongly when you’re closer in pitch. The channel fader lighting, meanwhile, match track beat with their flashing as well as showing output levels by their brightness. There are also dedicated controls for loops, filters and sample playback, while ports include a MIDI output, microphone input and line-out. The angled physical design means you can slide your laptop keyboard underneath and keep the overall footprint low.

The Pioneer DDJ-ERGO-V DJ Controller is available now, priced at £429 ($671). Buyers get a copy of Atomix Productions Virtual DJ Limited Edition in the box, though the controller should support other apps as well.

One of the last DJ systems we talked about was the Pioneer DDJ controllers for the Traktor software. I didn’t realize that Traktor also made its own DJ gear. Traktor has unveiled the new Kontrol S2 DJ controller that has a 2+1 setup with sample decks and mixing controls along with effect features.

The DJ controller was specifically designed for use with the Traktor Pro 2 software that is used on other DJ systems as well. The S2 is intended to be a more portable alternative to the control S4 with four decks. The S2 uses the same jog wheels that the S4 uses and the S2 has ergonomic controls for cueing, looping, and effects.

The integrated sound card is a 24-bit/96kHz unit with dual stereo outputs. Using the two playback decks and the sample decks the DJ can add up to eight simultaneous one-shot samples or beat-synced loops to the mix. The S2 also has a third channel for more creative techniques. Pricing and availability is unknown. You can see the deck in use in the video below.

Back in March, word of the Gemini FirstMix USB DJ controller surfaced. This is an affordable DJ controller for the new DJ looking to get started in the home. At the time the device surfaced, the price was pegged at a bit under $80. The FirstMix controller is now official available and the only downside is that the price didn’t hit what we expected. The controller is selling for $99.99.

The controller is made to connect to your computer via USB and allows the user to DJ with their iTunes and other music libraries. The device has touch sensitive jog wheels that can be used to change the pitch of a track. The device also has a sync feature.

That sync feature allows the DJ to combine two separate tracks and match the beat temps for a professional sounding mix. The device comes with the Cross LE DJ software and the price is $99.99 or about $20 more than we expected it’s still one of the cheaper controllers out there.

The humble accelerometer shows its worth again, with Stanford University computer music student Nicholas J. Bryan turning an iPhone into a DJ tool that allows analog turntables to control digital music. MOPHO DJ uses the iPhone’s accelerometer to track its position on the turntable, picking up a DJ’s scratches and transmitting that wirelessly to a nearby computer which processes MP3s in real-time.

While there have been so-called time-coded vinyl (TCV) systems in the past, they have all required specially-marked records and hardware to track their movement. MOPHO DJ differs in that it simply requires an accelerometer or gyroscope-equipped device, like an iPhone or iPod touch, and uses that motion tracking to do the same thing. That makes it cheaper and easier to implement; Bryan uses a disc of perspex with a rubber mat mounted to seat the iPhone, but you could feasibly use a regular record.

Because the direct movement of the turntable is being tracked, you can still use all its manual controls – such as pitch-adjustment – while the iPhone’s display shows the real-time waveform of the audio currently playing. Even if you don’t have a turntable you’ll still be able to use MOPHO DJ in the “untethered performance” mode, simply moving the phone in mid-air so as to scratch records.

Bryan details MOPHO DJ in his paper [pdf link] and intends to release the iPhone app and accompanying computer software in the near future.

Bad news if you’ve been holding out for a new Pioneer DJM-900nexus mixer; the company has announced it is delaying availability – and recalling all units currently in the wild – after spotting a problem with the headphone system. According to Pioneer, “connecting certain headphones from other manufacturers with the volume set high can trigger a protective circuit to unnecessarily power down the unit.”

The company has already addressed the issue at the production line, but it does mean that any units already in the wild in the US and Europe will have to be returned and swapped for a new model. According to Pioneer, that swap should happen at the retailer, but with availability now pushed back until early April it’s probably worth ringing ahead to make sure they’ve an updated version for you.

The Pioneer DJM-900nexus has am integrated 24bit/96kHz USB sound-card, four audio channels and two mic channels. It has an X-Y controller and can connect to up to four CDJ-2000s/900s (or alternatively software sources) simultaneously. MRSP is $2,399.

Happily Gemini has spotted the obvious gap in the market, and outed the Gemini FirstMix, a USB DJ controller with a sub-$80 MRSP.

As with the more expensive models, you get a pair of touch-sensitive jog wheels, each with volume, 2-band EQ and effects, along with a cross-fader. It hooks up via USB and comes with a copy of MixVibes CROSS LE with support for M4A, AIFF, WAV, MP3, FLAC and OGG audio files.

Set to go on sale in May 2011, the Gemini FirstMix will arrive at $79.95. Probably not something that Tiesto will give up his kit for, but an affordable way for bedroom DJs to get started at least.

The new console is called the DJ Console 4-Mx and it will ship on November 22 for $449.99. The console has many features for the money with a pair of large jog wheels and a lot more.

Those jog wheels are 4.7-inches in diameter and ¾-inch tall and they are similar in size to the wheels used for scratching on CD players. The wheels are for DJs mixing to switch back and forth from a computer and CD payer without changing g scale. The jog wheels also have detection sensors with touch technology.

The controller can be used in 2-deck and 4-deck modes with 89 controls in 2-deck mode and 150 controls in 4-deck mode. The controller also has numerous pitch faders, controls, and cue zones among other things. A wide range of connectivity makes it easy to connect to different components as well.

I can hardly make ringtones with iTunes and the extent of my musical ability is to turn on the radio. It’s cool when people have the kind of talent needed to make cool music using multiple sources like a DJ can.

A company called EKS has announced a new tool for the talented types out there who are looking for a DJ controller that is highly configurable. The device is called the Otus RAW. The RAW can work as a single or dual deck controller and is packed with features. The device has two long and sturdy SL-turntable pitch sliders.

Other features include large velocity pads and buttons for fast and easy operation. The company says that the controller offers a future proof design that can be configured for just about any need. The device certainly looks expensive to me and the manufacturer says pricing has not been determined yet. It will ship this spring.
