In Search of Solder and a Sense of Achievement

, Nov 27th 2010 Discuss [1]

Should all geeks have soldering iron burns on their hands if they want the title? Probably not; after all, another hallmark of the ideal geek is an affinity with code, making software do amazing things. They come in all shapes and sizes, then, but there’s a special, envious place in my heart for those to whom resister colors are meaningful rather than decorative. I look at the sometimes-useful, sometimes-bizarre, invariably brilliant projects documented on MAKE; I look at modders and DIY tinkerers like jkkmobile, slotting HSPA modems where manufacturers never intended them to sit, and I wish I could be trusted with a soldering iron and screwdriver set to do the same.

Family still at your house? You need the Altoids tin martini kit

, Nov 26th 2010 Discuss [0]

I can deal with most asshats without any issues or violence. If people I know get on my nerves too much I just don't have to see them again. When it comes to family, we don’t have that luxury. You can't just stop seeing family in most instances and no one can get on your nerves like family. Read The Full Story

Jenga Pistol for Those Who Wish to Shoot Their Way Out [Video]

, Nov 22nd 2010 Discuss [0]

A designer by the name of Matthias Wandel had an idea. Not that he was the first person to think of this idea, but he's certainly the first one to execute it in a way that found our eyeballs. More than likely if he aims it right, it'll be blasting out eyeballs in a very real way, too. This is the Jenga Pistol. Using simple mechanics, wood, a bit of metal, and a rubber band, this Wandel has created a completely awesome cheat tool, a real world hack, for the block toppling game Jenga. Read The Full Story

Laser-Guided Slingshot is Do It Yourself Project for the Family

, Nov 22nd 2010 Discuss [1]

As a kid, having a slingshot is one of the coolest things to show off to your friends. Even if it is, usually, just a piece of wood, some rubber, and something small enough that you can fling at some unsuspecting person. The idea is cool, in of itself. But, what if someone decided to make it better? That's exactly what KipKay asked, and then he went about and actually made it happen. So, now instead of a hunk of wood and some rubber, you now have some aluminum chunks, some rubber, and a laser-guided system. Read The Full Story

Daniel HeiBe Creates a PC Case Mod from Concrete

, Nov 19th 2010 Discuss [0]

For some, having a case mod that looks both artistically amazing and absolutely ridiculous at the same time is a life-long dream. For most of them, they get the tools and create their dream project, making it a reality. That's exactly what Daniel HeiBe did, who is actually no stranger to making remarkably unique case mods. His latest one, which will probably take the cake for outright uniqueness, is made completely out of concrete. Read The Full Story

DIY USB Floppy Disk Mixes the Best of Both Worlds

, Nov 15th 2010 Discuss [0]

Back in the day, the floppy drive was all the rage. Being able to transport your data from one PC to another, all thanks to this small, square thing that could usually fit right into your pocket. Of course, back then, the paltry amount of space on those disks is laughable now, but at least they got the job done. So, what if you want to be able to carry all your data on a floppy disk in today's world, just because you're retro like that? Well, you could always start a do it yourself project, where you combine a floppy disk and flash memory. Read The Full Story

The Daily Slash: November 11 2010

, Nov 11th 2010 Discuss [0]

Double Slash! Today is the first day we've ever run a post by the name of "SlashGear Morning Wrap-Up" for those of you who just can't wait until nighttime to get your daily dosage of technological gear news in list form. Then, it was a day just bursting at the seams with information about one phone: Nexus S. This Nexus S, also known by its codename Samsung GT-i9020, was today first accidentally(?) outed by Best Buy in a momentary broken online ad, then there were photo leaks and secret updates leading to a possible name confirmation, then another Best Buy leak leading to the date November 14 for store displays! Coincidence? Just about as much coincidence as a My Little Pony turned soldering iron. Read The Full Story

My Little Pony Soldering Iron Brilliance

, Nov 11th 2010 Discuss [0]

One of the dreamers behind this Magical Soldering Unicorn, mister Sean Bonner, said in april of this year that "The value of something like this is pretty obvious." I think he's completely right, and not just in a "OMG THAT IS JUST SUPER" sort of way. Think of all the traffic the site he's working with is getting now, all because of this relatively simple DIY hack on a piece of plastic and metal - together, these bits form an alliance that is truly synergistic. Let Them Eat Cake

, Nov 11th 2010 Discuss [11]

It is inevitable. A columnist will post a thoughtful article on a polarizing topic, and the comments section will explode. Whether the column was sensationalizing one side or the other, or if the columnist took a more moderate stance, it doesn’t matter. Often, the commenters have obviously not even read past the headline. They see the word that sets them off, that raises their blood temperature to a boil, and they have to attack. Or they see their side being razed, beaten down once again by the mindless cretins who are always on the attack. They charge into battle, swinging blindly and hitting whatever stands in their path. In the end, the same thing always happens. The argument goes meta, and becomes about arguing itself. Then, someone brings up Hitler.

No, wait, not Hitler. I meant Linux. Somebody brings up Linux.
