Each morning when my seven-year-old daughter wakes up, the first thing she asks me is how cold it’s going to be. If I tell her a specific number like 50°, she looks at me as if I asked her to solve an algebra equation. The next thing out of her mouth is, “do I need a jacket or not?” That’s all she really wants to know; weather from a child’s perspective can be distilled three basic things – shorts or pants or jacket. I think a lot of us are like that when it comes to the weather.

I would love to have this little gadget called the Cryoscope. It would be the perfect thing for letting a little kid figure out exactly what they need to wear on any given day. The Cryoscope is a cool little DIY gadget that was created by a guy named Robb Godshaw, who is an industrial design student at the Rochester Institute of Technology. The device is impressively simple in its construction with only a few parts that anybody familiar with computers will recognize.

The Cryoscope uses a solid little cube, a peltier element, heat sink, cooling fan, and RGB LED. An Arduino controller operates all of those parts. The controller receives the weather temperature data from an app that operates on the web. The way it works is incredibly simple, the controller either allows the aluminum cube to heat up or cool down. The hot or cold temperature created is passed to a simple metal cube that sits over the top of all the parts. All you need to do to know what the temperature is going to be like is simply walk up and place your hand on the outer aluminum cube, and you can feel what the weather will be like. Check out the video to get a better idea about how the thing works.

I bet many geeks are like me, when I replaced my old computer hardware and technology products, I tend to keep the old stuff. I keep that old stuff because it’s generally not broken, I just want newer, cooler gear, and you never know when something old and slow might come in handy. If you have a bunch of your old tech gear sitting around that you really don’t want, and you are trying to think of something cool to do with it a geek named Rodrigo Alonso has a heck of an idea.

Apparently, Alonso is a geek artist, and he takes all these old computer parts and hardware that appear to have been chopped up and crafts them into stools that look cool, even if they don’t appear to be easy on the rear. Alonso takes all the parts, mixes them up with resin, and dumps it into a mold. Once that resin dries, out pops a stool, with handles and feet molded in, that is ready for you to park your rear on.

I really like the one in the picture here with Apple keyboard on the top. I also see a bunch of old mice, CDs, and cooling fans along with a bunch of other stuff thrown in for good looks. I can certainly see one of these decorating my office or computer gaming room. What do you think? I wonder how hard this would be to pull off on your own; I know you can buy this sort of clear resin in some home-improvement stores.

I would wager that there are a bunch of you out there that like Star Trek as much as I do. I’m not dressing up in pointy ears or anything, but I can appreciate some awesome Star Trek gear when I see it. Take this coffee table for instance. If there was ever a cooler project for a geek with a wood working background, I haven’t seen it.

He must have a wife that likes Star Trek too since it is in the living room. When I wanted to put my Star Wars Wampa rug in the game room, the wife shot me down. I was able to return the favor when she wanted to decorate the closet with another Coach purse though. According to the wood artist maker, Barry Shields, the project took him a month to complete.

The wooden model is a replica of the NCC-1701-C. The glass on top is even cut in a shape that follows the lines of the ship and reminds me of the Star Trek badges. Me likey. You can buy one from the guy, if you have $3,100 lying around.

It’s been nearly 3 years in development and thousands of hours of blood, sweat, and fun had in the process, and it’s finally here: the complete re-make of Star Wars: A New Hope constructed entirely of fan-made 15 second clips. This project was originally called Star Wars Uncut, and this final product is of course called Star Wars Uncut: Director’s Cut, and stitches together the entire set of hundreds of clips into one perfected bunch. This version is the “final” version of the film, and is available for you to watch 100% for free and in its entirety.

This crowd-sourced bit of genius is available to watch both on Vimeo and on YouTube, both versions being dropped into this post here for your enjoyment and just incase one or the other is knocked out by the authorities that be. That said, it does appear that they’ve run into little to no trouble in creating and publishing this fan film, more than likely because there’s so much love in every bit of the process that no Empire could possibly resist. See if you can count how many times Legos are used in place of actors and droids:

This project, again, started in 2009 and was initiated to work with just the first Star Wars film: A New Hope. Contributors were asked to bring forth a 15 second clip assigned to them by the loosely tied leadership for the project, using whatever means necessary to bring the clip to life in a creative way. In 2010 this project won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Creative Achievement In Interactive Media, and it’s well deserved! The version you’re watching now has been put together by Aaron Valdez and Bryan Pugh, they doing video editing and sound editing to make this product one that’s not only watchable, but entirely enjoyable to behold!

Now it’s time to start in on The Empire Strikes Back! Hooray!

The slingshot madman Joerg Sprave recently showed off something about a slingshot that is pretty cool. When you stretch the rubber band that propels whatever you are shooting from the slingshot, the band heats up and has more pulling force. The bands start to cool right away, and the force of the slingshot is reduced.

That means if you are out hunting zombies and leave your slingshot cocked for a long time it will lose power. That could mean the difference in a dead zombie or one with a headache that is really mad at you. Sprave has fixed this power loss issue with a new enclosed slingshot that looks pretty cool/

The slingshot has a heating element inside an enclosed wooden box mounted on the slingshot. The heating element is powered by a rechargeable battery and when kicked on it heats that rubber band up until it gets all its force back. The red switch on the slingshot turns the heating element on and off. Check out the video to see the slingshot in action.

The modified laptop you’re about to witness is one that’s unique, but works with a device that most certainly is not – made by modder John Dunn for Sony running a Vaio F notebook under a fabulous amalgamation of wood and brass. What you’ve for here is a sort of casing for the notebook made of birch plywood, pine wood, brass, and copper. All of these materials are true to the “Steampunk” style, if you’re familiar, and the laptop is fully functional.

This creation is called the “eCog Mercury” and you can grab your own for a mere $1,250 USD and you’ll still need the Sony laptop itself. What Dunn sells here is his services and the final product, the final product being the laptop connected to the hardware here. What you’re going to get on the side is a slightly more difficult to repair laptop in the end, mind you.

This isn’t the first Steampunk modification of a piece of hardware on the laptop side of things, and it certainly wont be the last. We look forward to the continuation of the genre to be sure, as it’s rather rare that a modification in the vein of steam that doesn’t shine out as a fine art of work – or at least its rare that one reaches the top of the web like this one has. There’s also a video of this device in action, have a peek!

There’s nothing better than a gigantic pink monster truck / hearse hybrid made out of cardboard and paper to get your rock and roll concert tour underway, and They Might Be Giants have done us one better: they’ve taught us how to make our own! We love gadgets, and they’ve got a gigantic person-sized cardboard and paper boombox to fix us up there as well! This is basically the greatest combination of oddities to happen here in the tech, music, and fun world all day long!

All you’ve got to get is a bit of paper, some scissors, and maybe a bit of glue and you’ll be well on your way to creating the same awesome structure everyone in the hipster world’s favorite band of all time They Might Be Giants are pushing in this video! They’ve got a concert coming up, and their monster truck is telling you to get interested in it! Along for the ride as well is none other than Jonathan Coulton, famous for his ballads “the First of May” and “Still Alive” from the end of the Portal video game series (notably the first one.)

Now if you’re interested in creating this fine piece of automotive awesomeness, you can either make it full sized at over 12 feet tall, or you can choose to make the wimpy version at just a little closer to 4-inches. If you’re the kind of person who doesn’t have a lot of parking space, we suggest going for the smaller model. ALSO if you’re interested in going to the tour of these fine fellows, you’ll want to know that it all begins on the 27th of January in Santa Cruz. You can find the rest of the dates down below the video complete with links on TMBG’s YouTube. Get in on it!

If there’s one criticism we’ve always had about laser pointers it’s that only one person can run the risk of blindness at a time; thank goodness for tinkerer Matthew Leone’s DIY Laser Ball project, which opens the door to up to 14 lasers. Leone’s awesome Instructable packs a tennis ball with lasers and a microcontroller to create what’s described as “a cat-toy for humans” or a remote control “first-generation lightsaber training droid.”

Basically, the tennis ball – or any other ball, object or lump you may have lying around – is studded with lasers, each individually controlled by the specially programmed Teensy microcontroller (though you could use our old friend the Arduino too). That responds to a remote control, cycling through various patterns of laser light show.

Altogether, the components come to $78 or thereabouts, which makes the Laser Ball cheaper than many laser pointers you could buy in stores (albeit likely to cause somewhat more confusing during PowerPoint presentations). For something you can build in an afternoon, that’s pretty impressive.

One of the things that most people like so much about Android is that the OS is very open. One of the things that you can take advantage of on the Android platform is the open accessory protocol. A company called SparkFun Electronics has a new USB device called Electric Sheep that takes advantage of that open accessory protocol.

Electric Sheep is able to allow the user dynamic access to the phone systems to allow the creation of apps and accessories of all sorts. The kit will allow the smartphone to interface with a microcontroller like Arduino. The Electric Sheep boards can be used with anything running the Android OS.

The tech inside the electric Sheep boards is based on an ATMega2560 microcontroller and bootloader. The boards have a USB-host connector for on-board connection. The board supports Arduino IDEA and HandBag and is Arduino-shield compatible. The Electric Sheep board costs $79.95 each and are available now.

I have flown more than one remote controlled flying what not including helicopters and airplanes. The thing they have all had in common was a very short first flight followed by a horrendous crash rendering a chance of a second flight moot. I can only imagine the carnage and repair bill I would wrap up if I had the chance to fly this drone that a German effects firm made for one of those crazy expensive Red Epic cameras.

The effects company is called OMStudios and the thing is an octocopter with eight little motors and propellers to fly it around. I guess the idea is that a filmmaker can use the flying drone rather than renting a crane to shoot from the air. The drone can climb to 150 meters making it good for some shots at impressive altitudes.

I don’t know how much this thing would cost to rent, but buy the insurance policy. A dead battery in this flying machine would be bad news indeed. The camera under the drone can shoot film at 5K resolution and costs more than a nice new car. Check out the video below to see the rig in action.

I know the hazards of melee combat with a hoard of ravenous zombies is significant so when the invasion comes, you want a ranged weapon. You also want a weapon that is quiet so all the other zombies don’t come running. That weapon needs to be fast loading too so you can take out multiple enemies before they eat your eyeballs like marshmallows.

Our pal Joerg Sprave has a new slingshot that will do the deed called the pump action slingshot. The last time he offered a new slingshot to check out was when he invented the crossbow slingshot. The title says that is special about this unit, it has a pump cocking and loading mechanism. The pump action slingshot is designed to hold 20 big metal ball bearings. It will cock the flinging mechanism and load the weapon each time you pump the handle.

The pump locks the rubber bands in place and when the trigger is pulled, it flings the metal balls out quickly. It also reloads fast when you run out of the 20 shots the thing holds. Joerg says it’s reasonably powerful and one of the fastest loading slingshots he has ever created. Check out the video to see the thing in action.

We like robots around these parts and one of the latest little bots to surface is called Romo. As you can see in the photos, the little bot has a smartphone on top of it. That smartphone controls the robot and gives it the face of what appears to be the creature from Cut the Rope. Romo will officially work with the iPhone and the iPod touch.

The project has until November 21 to reach its funding goal of $32,000. So far, it has racked up $27,195 so it should have no issues hitting that main goal. If you want the Romo for yourself, you need to pledge at least $78 to the project. The bot appears to be a kit you build and has an acrylic base that lets you see the parts inside. The electronics connect to the iPhone or touch via the headphone port.

The Apple devices are specifically mentioned as compatible with Romo, but the company behind the product says any smartphone with the correct signals will work. What the correct signals are I don’t know. The bot has multiple modes of play and can be programmed. It can also access the smartphone camera to be used as a spy bot.

Yep, want. We are fans of geeky steampunk gear around these parts and while this project might not be as awesome as that steampunk apartment I talked about a while back, it is much cheaper and you don’t have to move to NYC to get your own. This cool steampunk DIY gun started life as a NERF N-Strike Barricade gun.

A geek going by faustus70 then took some planks from an old antique wood chair to cover the weapon and secured that old wood to the gun using some hand cut aluminum straps and rivets. Any kid (or adult) wielding this bad boy will be the master of the neighborhood NERF war.

It still works and has a magazine that holds ten whistler darts inside. The darts are fired with help from an electric system and power comes from AA batteries. The scope on top of the gun offers three times magnification to snipe your enemy from afar. Apparently the guy was offering the gun on Etsy for sale at $300.

The 90′s ruined me, I find it hard to think about TP today without thinking about The Great Cornholio. I bet had our pal Beavis not been a raving idiot, he would have used this TP printer that writes tweets or content from a RSS feed directly onto your favorite paper. Apparently this printer contraption was invented by a German dude named Mario Lukas to enter some sort of tech competition.

I would certainly give the man bonus points for originality. The printer is made from wood and a lot of ingenuity along with various bits from old optical drives. The mechanical parts you see were scavenged from the old CD drives and then mounted onto the wood frame of the printer. An Arduino controller is the brains for the printer.

The printer has network connectivity to get the feeds from the web and print them out. I’m not sure exactly what the print ink being used is. I don’t see anything in the build notes about the ink cartridge. The finished product is very odd in an impressive sort of way. Check out the video to see the build process.

Ben Heck made his name crafting some really cool game consoles that were packed into portable from factors. Since his show kicked off on element 14, Heck has created some stuff that we are used to seeing from him like portable Xboxs, but he has also branched out into some odd projects like the automatic hand sanitizer dispenser. Heck’s latest DIY creating is out of the realm of what he is famous for.

The latest project Heck created some sort of sensor that attaches to the handlebars of a bicycle. The idea is that the sensor would alert you when you are riding too close to cars or other devices. The sensor is an electric light-up ping sensor. I thought the sensors that warned when you were too close to things were your eyes.

The episode shows how to build your own if you want from measuring timing and distance with Parallax ping sensors and connecting LEDs to writing the code for the Arduino chipKIT inside and routing the case to hold the device. The sensors will illuminate red or green LEDs to show if you are safe or not. These apparently work like the parking sensors on some new automobiles.

Geeks are always out to ply their geek trade no matter if that is waxing up their car, playing video games, or showing of their latest sling shot inventions like our slingshot madman Joerg Sprave. Not too long ago Joerg was showing us a new slingshot that was a crossbow bullpup design. That slingshot worked pretty well and had some impressive power behind it.

Joerg is back now and is showing off the crossbow design again alongside another little slingshot that he made that looks like a traditional handheld design. The design of the handheld slingshot is tweaked though to use the roller system that is on the crossbow slingshot to give the thing more power. Joerg picked up a little beer keg that was left behind and uses it for slingshot fodder.

Surprisingly despite the fact that the crossbow is able to fire the ball bearing faster than the handheld design, the crossbow is unable to go through the little keg. The handheld design on the other hand shoots right through the can sending beer gushing everywhere. Being a true German, Joerg points out up front that the beer is no longer good.

In my neck of the woods, there are plenty of cars and trucks that have more watts in stereo gear than the drivers have in brain cells. You know the sort that has more money tied up in wheels and stereo gear than the car is worth even though the paint is falling off the car. An artist named Nik Nowak has taken mobile stereo gear to the next level. Notice I didn’t say automotive stereo gear, Nik didn’t use a car or truck for his stereo.

Nowak took some sort of Japanese mini dumper and turned it into a treaded, speaker clad beast. I can only assume this thing used to be what we in the States would call a backhoe with treads. Nowak took the digging attachment off and replaced it with the speaker box. The vehicle can still move around on its treads and can take the 4,000 watts of boom with it.

The thing has six 12-inch mid-range drivers, and three 18-inch woofers, along with four tweeters. That is a lot of bass for sure and it may have been perfect to get the looters to leave London, assuming the stereo gear off the tank didn’t get looted. The speakers can be raised using the tank hydraulic system. The seat appears to have a mic and some DJ gear along with digital what nots to control the music.

This has to be the bravest dude on the planet, or perhaps the dumbest I can’t really decide. A Chinese farmer named Shu Mansheng has designed his own flying contraption that has no wings and used eight motorcycle engines fitted with propellers inside a big metal circle that holds a basket. The design of the craft reminds me more than a little of the AR.Drone.

The round steel frame of the contraption has spokes that the motors are attached to. The engines and propellers are offset so that they can spin freely. They also have the added bonus of complete enclosing the basket-style cockpit of the craft in a spinning wall of wooden propeller death. Should things go wrong, there is no escape for Shu.

The craft measures 18-feet in diameter and Shu has already had the aircraft on its first tethered test flight. During the test, the craft hovered for ten seconds at an altitude of 3.3 feet. This is the fifth flying machine Shu has constructed. I can only imagine how unstable this will be in free flight.

For decades now in science fiction films and stories, it’s been basically a norm for screens of all types, shapes, sizes, and interfaces, to be home to touch-screen functionality. One of the more popular places gigantic touchscreens appeared relatively recently in film was the sci-fi classic Minority Report – so popular was this film, in fact, that any time you see a monstrous transparent touch-sensitive display here on the web, the film’s name wont be far behind. What we’ve got today that’s right along those lines is a relatively giant (23-inches, in this case) display that works not just with touch interaction, but with Android to boot!

What you’ve actually got here isn’t so much a tablet or a smartphone but an touchscreen panel attached to a rig that runs on Android. This is the Android MegaPad and, as its designer notes, it took a few weeks and right around $600 to build. It’s Martin Drashkov, tech writer and odd computer builder, and he says that its obvious to him that the Android MegaPad is the next logical step after the tablet – “a modern touch-based computing device with with a screen size that will enable a whole different set of experiences.”

The sheer size of this device coupled with the mega multi-touch abilities it holds allows more than one person to work with it at once. This, as Drashkov notes, opens up yet another door into new games and interactive apps. Drashkov has made a video showing off a couple of apps that benefit greatly from such a monstrous touch display despite having been build originally for a much smaller panel.

Remember that this device, while it appears to simply be running Android 2.3.x Gingerbread on a 23-inch Acer touchscreen display, is connected to a bigger set of gear in the background. That said, how does $600 for a 23-inch stationary Android-run panel sound to you? What would you do with it? Perhaps use it as your own customized smart TV?

This is clearly going to happen in the future on a bigger scale, not necessarily on Android to start with, but we’re well on our way. Well con, Drashkov!

Take a hot chick and put her in a DIY anything that is from a geek flick and you have instant win. The DIY R2-D2 helmet that we saw a while back was a perfect example of Star Wars DIY. Here is another example of Star Wars DIY and this is hotter than the helmet if you ask me. I missed this when it turned up on the Star Wars Blog back in July, but it surfaced again recently.

The lady in the photos is Jennifer Landa and she crafted this Death Star dress by hand and headed out to Comic-Con in San Diego. Landa was crafty in creating the dress. The big skirt was made from paper-Mache applied to a beach ball and then cut in half. The paint started with gray and then all the details worn on the skirt are made with craft foam, fabric tape, and paint. It looks really cool.

The headband thingy is geeky too with a big tie fighter on it. Apparently, the TIE Fighter is a toy made by Micro Machines. I had no idea they had things that were so large in the collection. Specifically it’s a plastic toy version of Vader’s own TIE Interceptor. Check out more pics in the gallery.

Microsoft’s Surface Sphere was unfortunately just an eye-catching demo, but if you want some spherical display goodness in your life (or, indeed, just in your living room) then Nirav Patel has the DIY route for you. His homegrown spherical display uses a Microvision ShowWX pico-projector, an 8-inch frosted glass light fitting, a fish-eye lens and some open-source software he’s coded up specially, and costs around $200 to put together.

The choice of pico-projector is particularly important: it’s a laser-based model, which means there’s no focusing required and so it can project onto the entire inner surface of the globe – thanks to the fish-eye lens – simultaneously. Patel’s software takes the high-resolution, copyright-free image and video data released from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - which includes basic globe maps, animated weather patterns, the milky way and the moon – and finagles it to suit the sphere.

Unlike Microsoft’s prototype there’s no multitouch control to manipulate the image, though you can spin the graphics round in the DIY version using the computer doing the graphics crunching. In the second video, Patel has tracked 24 different low-orbit satellites using the display. Best of all, he’s released all the required code – including templates for the 3D printed brackets holding everything together – for you to try your hand at building one too.

That master of slingshot disaster Joerg Sprave has posted a new video to his YouTube account showing off his latest creation. This time around, he is shooting normal ball bearings out of what he calls the compact bullpup crossbow slingshot rather than exotic ammo like saw blades or iPhones. I will admit up front I had to watch the video twice because the cute ninja zombie killing cats in the background distracting me. That one cat was all “what was that!” when Sprave finally fired the slingshot.

Sprave points out that the slingshot he is firing in the video isn’t finished. It needs some paint, sanding, and stronger bands. This is the first slingshot in a while I have seen from Sprave that didn’t make me fear for his life. I did fear for a cats life because cats are crazy and will go running exactly where you don’t want them when you least expect it.

The design uses rollers to make stretching the thick rubber bands back to the trigger mechanism easier. I would be all twisted up login that each time since Murphy would show up and snap that rubber band leaving me with a not so cool rubber band scar between the eyes. I wonder if Joerg has ever looked at one of those kitties and thought, “What would it take to make a real cat-a-pult?”

This is so cool. A dude going by akumpf has posted up the instructions on making a physical Mario game that has the side scrolling action we are used to in Mario with a twist. It sort of reminds me of a combination of Mario Bros. and Frogger. The game uses a cardboard box, paper, servos, and some magnets along with Teagueduino to control the works.

Once built the little paper Mario is controlled by a straw that sticks out the front of the box. It appears that the box opens automatically and you get to scroll along dodging the Goombas and other things you don’t want to run into with your Mario character. The scrolling gets faster the longer you make it.

If your Mario crosses one of the obstacles in the paper game, you die, and the game resets. The resetting also appears to shut the box lid automatically. You can see the play action in the video below. If you want to make your own version the full parts list, instructions, and software are offered on Teagueduino.

LEGO is cool and one of the geekier building materials out there. I like to see people build giant things out of the little bricks and marvel at the geek factor and time it took them to complete. The hardest thing I ever made form LEGO was a Technica racecar, this 10-foot tall replica of the Trump International Hotel and Tower isn’t something I’d want to mess with.

The tower is 10-feet tall as I said, and it has 65,000 pieces. One of the coolest touches on the building is that it has some colored brick on the side to make a pattern that looks like reflected skyline of the city. This mimics the shiny glass of the real building. The finished effect is really cool. I can only imagine how long it took the artist, Sean Kenney, to build this thing.

The building is on permanent display at the Chicago LEGO Store. You have to check out the artist’s website and see some of the things he has made from LEGO. The LEGO busts and photos are awesome. Apparently the build time was a full month at full-time, presumably 8-hours a day, along with two assistants.

Active Media Products has a ton of SSDs for all sorts of products and uses that are in its SaberTooth line. The last of the products we talked about was the SaberTooth ZF SSD that was aimed at use in small notebooks and other devices. Active Media Products has rolled out another new SSD in the series called the SaberTooth M1. This storage drive is very small and made to slip into an mSATA port.

The SSD is offered in several different storage capacities including 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. All of the capacities use the same hardware with JEDEC MO-300B mSATA spec support and a Jmicron JMF605 4-channel controller. The drives interface with the SATA-II 4Gbps interface and use MLC NAND inside. The SSDs sip power to help extend the battery life of the device they are plugged into.

Other features include ECC for reliability, bad bit management to prevent errors, and a wear leveling algorithm to help extend the usable life of the SSD. The SSDs come with a screwdriver and an installation guide to help you perform the upgrade. The sequential write speed for the drives is up to 80MB/sec and sequential read is up to 160MB/sec. The 16GB SSD is $74.95, the 32GB version is $94.95, and the 64GB version is $189.95.

I am a big fan of Star Wars as are most geeks. I think that it’s really cool to see girls that are fans of Star Wars too. It’s easy to think of Star Wars fans as a bunch of guys, but that isn’t the case. Check out the is hottie named Jenn Hall that created her own Star Wars R2D2 theme helmet for riding her scooter. Hall is a pastry artist by day and geek by night.

The helmet may have started its life as your typical glossy black brain bucket, but some tape, silver paint and blue accents later the thing is a geek work of art. The build process looks like it took some work to get it just right. You can see a slew of different photos on Jen’s website that shows her making the helmet.

The little projections on the helmet are apparently made from cut down PVC pipe. I think it would have been equally awesome had she created a helmet that had the round hair things that Leia wore in the original flick. Jen says after she completed the project she wore it around the house and then wore the helmet to bed. I bet her email is flooded with geek marriage proposals.

My kids like to shoot their own photos of their friends and other stuff. My daughter has one of those Fisher-Price cameras that are designed to survive rough treatment she uses quite a bit. The catch is that the image quality is horrible and she often gets mad because the photos are so dark you can’t make out what is going on.

What she needs is a real digital camera that can survive drops. A modder has taken a normal digital camera and created just that using the Sugru material to ruggedize the camera. I have never heard of Sugru before, it’s a material that is like modeling clay that won’t slump over and is bouncy because it’s made from silicone.

The builder took the material, molded it into bands that would protect the camera, yet leave controls accessible, and then gave it to a kid. Apparently, the Sugru material is bouncy enough to keep the camera alive if it is dropped. The builder says that the only tricky part is making the Sugru bands for the camera. Check out the finished product in the video below.

When my son was an infant, he had the world’s worst colic. The only time he would sleep when he was having a bad bout was in this little chair that vibrated when you wound it up. When the vibration would stop, he cried so we were up winding the seat a lot. Any new parent with a fussy baby knows that you will try anything to calm them down. Many parents find that a drive in the car gets them quieted down.

The bad part is that parents aren’t always up for a drive. Ben Heck has come to the rescue with a motion simulator he has built that goes onto a car seat to help the fussy baby get to sleep. Heck used the Google Android Open Accessory Development Kit (ADK) in the build to create a car seat from a viewer request that simulates the motion of a car seat in the car. The cool part is that the simulator actually captures the feel of the movement of the user’s car and plays it back using simulation.

The motion is added to the car seat using test servos. I would have loved to have something like this when my son was little. It would have really saved me from some 2 am drives to get him to go to sleep only to have him wake up again when I pull into the driveway.

When I was a kid, all we had were the fat TVs that were stuffed with cathode ray tubes. I can recall my grandmother having a really old TV that you had to turn on and wait until the cathode tubes heated up before you could get the grainy black and white image. With TVs going flat there isn’t much use left for the old cathode ray tube, other than some awesome geekery like Xellers over on Instructables got up to.

This dude didn’t just find an old TV and rip a cathode ray tube out, he made his own. He used an old wine bottle and some other parts in the build and offered you the instructions needed to make your own. I wouldn’t call this an easy project by any means, but the process claims to need no specialized tools in the build.

I’m not sure what you can do with the finished cathode ray tube when you are done other than look at it. Grab all the steps to make your own along with a parts list on Instructables. The parts that can be purchased at a Home Depot and an AC supply store. Check out the finished results below.

Update: A dude named Kyle Mcallister has contacted us to say that the builder of the homemade CRT in this post, Xellers, actually used his designs. According to Mcallister, Xellers actually requested Mcallister’s help in replicating his work and the project here is an exact copy down to the bottle and fittings used. Mcallister links us to YouTube videos where Xellers asked how to replicate the project and points out the dates of the videos. Mcallister’s original video is here and the Xellers video is here.

If you need to get an idea what is on the other side of a wall or other obstacle you can’t see over in a situation where looking over the obstacle yourself could get you or someone else hurt you need a drone. The catch is that not all law enforcement agencies have access to drone of any sort. A geek named Joshua Marpet showed off a new drone device he made from a 37mm flare launcher at the Defcon convention recently.

The modded flare gun fires a cartridge that can send images back from a small digital camera that is inside the shell. The idea is that the weapon could be used by police to get an idea what the bad guys are doing. The flare gun uses the Firefly single-use spy cam developed by military contractors from Israel. The device has potential use in the civilian sector as well.

It could be used to aid in search and rescue missions or for watching a kidnapper for instance. The camera is shot 500-feet into the air and can send back 8-seconds worth of video details to give a glimpse of what might be hidden to those using the camera. The camera shoots the images to a wireless receiver using 5.8GHz tech.

It’s that time again; the SlashGear Week in Review is back. One of my favorite stories from last week was the LEGO DIY R2D2 robot. The robot was remote controlled and even the little dome turned making for a very cool project. The teen LulzSec hacker that was arrested in Britain recently was found to have details on hundreds of thousands of people on his computer. The exact number according to the police was 750,000 different personal records on people.

Researchers into new methods of networking have discovered a way to use LED lighting to distribute full HD films and other content to computers. The LED lights are used as a wireless networking solution that delivers up to 800 Mbit/s download speeds. Anonymous is apparently testing a new attack tool called #RefRef. The tool was apparently tested on Pastebin and a 17-second test shut down the website for 42 minutes.

Last week Britain signaled that it intended to make it legal to copy a CD or DVD by owners. The intent is to allow the moving of a digital copy of the music or film to computers or other digital devices. A rumor surfaced that the iPhone 5 was already sent to carriers for testing. The rumors are still pointing to a launch of the new smartphone in September or October.

Intel Ultrabooks were supposed to hit the market at under $1000. Insiders are saying that the new machines are being sabotaged by Intel greed with a bill of materials that forces the machines to sell for more than Intel says they should. Chris spent some hands on time with the Blackberry Torch 9810 and shot a video of the device for us to check out. He was concerned that there may not be enough different here to help Blackberry get back to where it once was in the market.

Android Ice Cream Sandwich will be tied up with Texas Instruments as the chipset reference platform .TI has offered up a photo that they will be using to promote the tie up and it’s cute. The interesting bit is that we expect to see some awesome chipsets form TI next year. MotoActive surfaced last week showing off a cool Android watch for the athletic folks out there. The little watch appears to have a 1-inch screen and offer all sorts of details on your run or workout along with media playing.

The FCC went out and measured the actual interent speeds around the country and offered the data this week. The survey found Verizon’s fiber connectivity the fastest and Cablevision was the slowest. ComScore’s latest numbers show that there are now 25 million Google+ users around the world. Google has only offered that it has 10 million registered users so far.

The Juno space probe that will head to Jupiter will take with it three different LEGO minifigs. The minifigs are likenesses of Galileo, the pagan god Jupiter, and Juno the sister of Jupiter. Microsoft announced that it had invited Google to bid with it Novel patents. Google denied the claim and then Microsoft offered up emails to show they did in fact invite Google.

A new study that surfaced recently claims that our moon may be the result of two moons that collided and formed one. The theory explains why the near and far sides of our moon are so vastly different. The Nyko Zoom for Kinect hit pre-order at Amazon and other retailers last week. This is the accessory for the Kinect that shortens the distance you need to be from the Kinect to play.

The Skype app for Android was updated last week. The update brought with it support for video calling on several new handsets. Rue reviewed the Motorola Droid 3 smartphone late in the week. She liked the phone and the main quibble was that the phone didn’t support 4G.

NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance orbiter has found evidence of liquid water on the surface of Mars. NASA says the black streaks it thinks to be water only show up in spring and summer. A hacker at the Black Hat conference has shown a way to hack the wireless connectivity for insulin pumps. The hack has the potential to do harm to the diabetic wearing the pump.

Google’s robot car that needs no driver got into an accident last week. The accident was blamed on the human though; the car was being driven manually when the accident occurred. An awesome old school sit down Outrun arcade game was hacked into a real driving game. The arcade game was put onto a chassis and can really take to the roads with eh driver watching the screen to see where he is going. Thanks for reading this week’s edition, see you next time!

Way back in the day I was all about the driving arcade games. When the parents took me to Chuck E Cheese I waited in line and blew most of my tokens on OutRun and other driving games. I always thought it would be awesome if you could really drive like that video game and apparently, some other geeks did too. Some researchers at the University of California at Irvine used research as an excuse to live out their childhood driving game on the street fantasies.

The gang took an old Arcade version of OutRun where you sit down and actually mounted the game to a chassis that can move down the road. You sit behind the games screen and when you are on the streets, you steer the car looking at the screen rather than what is really in front of you.

The project is supposed to be some sort of research into informatics systems that might assist the disabled in driving and in other things. I think they just wanted to play an arcade game for real, and I am fine with that. Check out the video below to see it in action. I’m thinking the glare on the arcade game screen is the reason the dude has to keep looking around the game screen to see where he is going.

I have talked a bunch about some of the cool DIY stuff that I have seen around the web that geeks use Arduino to build. My favorite DIY stuff that people build using Arduino are robots like the Android mascot I mentioned a few weeks back. Microsoft Research has unveiled a new project that was created by the Sensors and Devices team called .NET Gadgeteer. The project was started after some of the folks inside the research area started looking for a faster way to come up with new products.

The research gang spent two man-years developing the SenseCam. After coming up with the .NET Gadgeteer they were able to develop a similar product in a matter of hours. The .NET Gadgeteer platform is a combination of flexible hardware and .NET-based software that allows users to create small gadgets in a few hours or less. The gang behind the project thinks it has great potential for fast device prototyping and it will be offered as a retail product.

The .NET Gadgeteer software is available as a download now and the retail hardware needed is up for pre-order at GHI Electronics. The system comes with a bunch of different modules that can be connected to give different functionalities. The modules allow the system to take photos, play sound, sense the environment, communicate with other devices, and interact wit the user. The kit also has USB ports for attaching to a computer. The pre-order kit sells for $249.95 and is called the FEZ Spider Starter Kit. Shipments are set to start on September 30.

LEGO + Star Wars + Remote control = Awesome. A dude going by the name Ickelpete has apparently been working on the bot of awesome you see here since last year. The dude has work in progress pictures on his flickr page that go back to last summer showing him at work on various parts of this little droid. The finished product appears to be life-size.

It’s made out of a bunch of different bricks and has all the little touches for the movie droid. It’s too bad it can’t project a tiny Leia on the ground too. Its remote controlled and has a middle tripod leg that comes out of the droids belly when it needs to motivate and it can then move forwards and backwards. The dome can also twist and turn.

This may be the coolest LEGO project in the Star Wars universe. It even has flashing lights on the dome. Pete constructed the robot for the LEGO Space event at the National Space Center UK. I hope he won a prize because the droid is epic.

Lindsay Boo Barrasse may well be the ideal geek girlfriend me thinks. She’s hot and she took it upon herself to construct a Princess Leia costume. Why did she make the costume you ask? Does it really matter? She’s hot and dressed like Princess Leia. Granted I would have been more impressed had she created the gold bikini Jaba made Leia wear.

Still, Lindsay created a very cool costume and it is made out of duct tape. I assume the tall boots she already owned, they don’t appear to be cobbled together from tape. The trademark Princess Leia hair donuts are actual rolls of black duct tape on a headband of some sort.

Lindsay topped the costume off with a toy laser gun and went out on the town. Check out all the photos to see the costume for yourself. If anyone knows Lindsay, ask her to get some gold duct tape and ping us with the follow-up Jaba costume.

We have a ton of DIY projects that are really interesting rolling around the geeky tech world this month. I have already looked at a few of them recently and another one has caught my eye. If you ever wished you could just take control of President Obama and make home say what you want to hear for a change a this Obama speech keyboard is for you.

The keyboard looks normal enough and the builder hacked it with samples of words from the president’s inaugural speech in 2009. When you press the keys, you get samples of the president’s voice saying each word. You can make him speak random gibberish if you want or you can attempt to string together actual sentences.

It looks like both the white keys and the black keys have their own words strung together. I wonder what the president would say if you hit the keys in the order needed to play chopsticks. Check out the video below to see the presidential keyboard in use.

I really like to see the cool hacks and projects that people come up with using Arduino. We have seen everything from robots to this set of air drums using the Arduino system for control. The DIY guy behind this cool project is Maayan Migdal and he used Arduino and a MIDI device. The drumstick you see in the guys hands are section of wood cut from a garden rake.

Each of the sticks has a USB port and an accelerometer as well. The stick in the left hand is for the hi-hat and the right stick has two modules that allow it to work for the snare drum and crash cymbals. The person also took care of the bass with air foot pedals using some hacked flip-flops.

The flip-flops have a pair of sensors inside with the left foot handling the bass drum and the right has a light sensor for the hi-hat pedal. This set up is really cool. Check out the video below to see the system in action. This thing sort of reminds me of the Korg Wavedrum we saw back in April.

Man is this one gross DIY project. I would never in a million years make it as a barber. Getting other people’s hair on me is really gross. I would certainly not make it as an artists who uses other people’s hair as a medium for creating. I just couldn’t do it. I’m not sure how the artist that made the castle sculptures you see here came to use hair for building blocks.

The artist is Agustina Woodgate and she takes the hair and makes it into little bricks to create the castles you see in the photos here. The two sculptures are from the artists “I Wanted to Be a Princess” collection. The castle made of bricks you see has 3,000 hairballs total. The work is called “Tower” and it stands four feet tall.

The other is called “Sandcastle” and it uses more of a freeform construction. It is intended to look like a sandcastle that is decaying. It’s the grossest one to me with all the loose hair at the base. It looks like some sort of royal wedding where hair and not hats are the big odd draw.

How awesome is this dude at making replica weapons for video games! We have seen the work of Harrison Krix before back when he made the M8 Avenger replica weapon in his spare time for grins. The dude does some epic work and this time around he was asked by the folks at Bioware to make a replica of the new N7 rifle from Mass Effect 3 to be used in the marketing surrounding Comic-Con.

The dude received the order and made the weapon in only 14 working days! I can’t imagine producing something this cool myself in 14-months, much less a few weeks. Krix even had time to take hoards of photos of all the steps of the build process for us to check out. This guys is a replica making god and should have his likeness in the video game me thinks.

The weapon started at MDF and a bunch of glue. The cracks and gaps were filled with bondo, foam and clay, and then molds were made to get rubber parts. The finished weapon looks like it is waiting for someone to pick it up and start a firefight. I wonder how much the finished weapon weighs. This prop is so cool!

Pinocchio needed a fairly godmother to become a real boy, but all Wall-E needed to become a real robot was a geek with some parts and a bit of time. A dude going by the handle DJ Sures took what appears to be one of those plastic Wall-E toys from last holiday season and hacked the thing up to become a real robot. The result is a cute robot that I have to keep my kids from seeing or they will want one just like it.

The bot has a camera for an eye, voice recognition, and object tracking. The Wall-E robot uses an EZ-B Bluetooth Robot controlled and the software functions use the EZ-Builder software that is included with the robot controller hardware. Inside the bot are five different servos and an eBay procured 2.4GHz wireless camera.

This isn’t the first go round for the robot loving DJ Sures. Apparently, he built a Wall-E last year that had less functionality and has also built other robots as well. You can check out the video to see the robot Wall-E in action.
