It’s been almost a full year since we reported on Brite-View’s CinemaTube media player, and that means it’s just about perfect timing to get an upgraded, new model, right? Well lucky you, because Brite-View agrees with that sentiment. They’ve just pulled the cover off their CinemaGo BV-5005HD Mini CG HD media player — and yes, that may be the longest title for a gadget we’ve seen in awhile.

The CinemaGo is, for all intents and purposes, just a re-imagining of the CinemaTube of last year. You still get the eSATA interface, USB 2.0, built-in WiFi, and a BitTorrent manager. On top of all that, you also get access to MUZEE Internet radio channels as well. Additionally, the box is also able to handle 1080p output, and it’s perfectly capable of supporting formats like MOV, WMV, and MKV, amongst a whole plethora of others.

As for storage, you can choose to either put media onto the box thanks to an attached hard drive, or if you’re into that whole futuristic wireless thing, you can utilize your home network, or a general Web-based connection. As for pricing, you’ll be looking at spending $149.99 when the CinemaGo releases later this year. Oh, but wait. If you pre-order now, you can circumvent that price, and actually get it for only $109.99. So, this may be the best time to pre-order.

Press Release:

brite-View CinemaGo with Internet Radio Debuts

The Perfect Compact Player, CinemaGo Offers Personalized Entertainment at Home or on the Go

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 30 /PRNewswire/ — brite-View by Xpike Innovation yesterday launched the CinemaGo (BV-5005HD Mini CG), a special version of the highly successful CinemaTube (BV-5005HD). The small, sleek CinemaGo’s eSATA interface data transfer speed is three times faster than a USB 2.0 interface. CinemaGo also includes a Wi-Fi adapter for easy network access, a torrent download feature and MUZEE internet radio channels.

CinemaGo’s vivid 1080p high-definition picture quality can be displayed on HDTV in all video formats, including MOV, WMV, MKV, AVI, VOB, DIVX, FLV and RMVB. Content can be delivered from a locally attached hard drive via the home network or the internet. MUZEE broadcasts thousands of sports, music, news and talk show channels from 210 countries. San Francisco Giants fans can listen to KNBR in a Miami hotel room, and music fans can groove to the latest European dance hits on Digitally Imported.

The CinemaGo’s compact design is perfect for enjoying personalized entertainment whether at home or on the go, even in the car. The eSATA interface, a feature requested by brite-View customers, lets users watch Blu-ray movies without waiting for the movies to load. Networking multiple CinemaGo devices enables content streaming and file transfer between attached hard drives.

“A good digital media player transforms your TV into an entertainment hub, showing content from your computer, a storage device or the network,” said Robert Lo, CEO of Xpike Innovation. “The CinemaGo does exactly that, with the potential to do much more.” Lo said talks with partners are ongoing, and hinted that firmware upgrades may bring even more web-based content and services to the CinemaGo.

The CinemaGo is available now for pre-order on brite-View’s website for $109.99.

Nokia continue to drip out new information about the Nokia N8‘s abilities, and after the impressive photo and video editing demonstration earlier it’s now the turn of multimedia playback to briefly hog the spotlight. According to Blog-N8.fr, a French Nokia representative confirmed that the N8 would be able to natively play DivX encoded videos, along with the H.264, MPEG4 and other formats mentioned at the handset’s official launch.

The site apparently saw a demo of Avatar playing smoothly on the N8 in DivX format, while 720p HD content was played back – separately - via the handset’s HDMI port. So far Nokia have made no mention of native DivX compatibility, though it’s certainly not something we’d sniff at. We’re waiting on confirmation from Nokia themselves as to whether this is accurate or a mistake, and will update accordingly.

The CinemaTube has gone up for pre-order today. It’s a media player that connects to your tv, and gives you the ability to watch stored movies, pictures, and other videos right from the box. No longer have to worry about physical media anymore, just in case you were one of those people who thought that the way of the disk was for dinosaurs. Media is going the digital way, and Brite-View wants you to get there in the high definition way.

They have a previous CinemaTube model available, which retailed for about $69.99, but that lacked any HD. This time around, Brite-View has gone and provided a full 1080p HD media player, that also comes out of the box with BitTorrent downloader, as well as YouTube XL, which allows you to watch YouTube right on the tv. It’s basically a means to bypass the computer, if you’re not using Windows Media Center or an equivalent to do the same. Plus, the high definition is something that you probably shouldn’t pass up.

The CinemaTube comes with a load of supported video formats, like MPEG (and all its derivates), DivX, as well as H.264. Audio wise, it’ll pump out pure Dolby Digital and DTS. And it can also play media from a USB mass storage device. The pre-order is live right now, and it will get you to save some $30 from the suggested retail value of $129.99. So for $99.99, you can start downloading and watching straight to your TV in glorious HD. Head on over to Brite-View’s site to dig into even more details, as well as some more pictures.

In fact the new plasma HDTV is 40-percent more power efficient than the previous generation of Samsung plasmas, and 20-percent lighter. Don’t confuse “lighter” with “light”, though; it still weighs 26kg. There’s also a 58-inch version with an unspecified depth; Samsung say it’s 50-percent slimmer than before, and tips the scales at 36kg.

Other specs include Samsung’s Full HD Crystal Engine, DLNA support and 240Hz refresh rates. No sign of prices, though, nor availability, though we’re thinking these will be some expensive lounge candy.

There’s also 120Hz refresh rates, Live Scan and 2ms response times, plus LG have thrown in their new “Color Decanting” technology which relies on ultra-small sensors that detect changes in ambient light and automatically adjust screen brightness. According to LG, this both saves energy and makes the XCanvas displays easier to watch.

A USB port allows for digital photos, music and videos – including those in DivX format – to be loaded and played without a computer, and the Bluetooth connection can not only be used to beam photos over to the XCanvas LH70 series but to connect wireless stereo headphones via the A2DP standard. The 47-inch is priced at 2,800,000 South Korean Won ($1,848), the 42-inch at 2,100,000 SKW ($1,386), the 37-inch at 1,900,000 SKW ($1,254) and the 32-inch at 1,450,000 SKW ($957).

After details leaked last week, and LG themselves teased the device’s existence, the company has finally come clean and announced the LG Arena KM900. The touchscreen handset will officially debut at Mobile World Congress in a week’s time, but we now know that it will feature 7.2Mbps 3G HSDPA, WiFi, A-GPS and the company’s new 3D S-Class User Interface.

Full specs are unconfirmed at present – we’re promised them at WMC – but LG have revealed that the Arena will feature both Dolby and DivX capabilities for “audio and video technologies never before seen on a mobile phone.” The S-Class GUI uses an animated cube layout for four customizable home screens, as well as 3D graphics. Going on what has leaked previously, though, we’re expecting a 5-megapixel camera, 3-inch WVGA 800 x 480 262K color touchscreen, Mobile TV capabilities and an FM radio.

The GUI certainly looks different from the leaked image last week, which – given how much that resembled a certain Apple handset – can only be a good thing. We’ll know all about the LG Arena KM900 next week, when SlashGear brings you all the latest news from MWC in Barcelona.

[Thanks Alex!]

Toshiba only brought along two working TG01 prototypes to the London launch of the Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone today, but SlashGear managed to get some in-use shots of the handset in action. The company is betting on consumers prioritising style, screen size and multimedia ability above all else, and while their claims to have created a “new category of product” can be dismissed as the usual marketing hyperbole, the Toshiba TG01 itself looks to be a very interesting device.

More photos and hands-on feedback on the Toshiba TG01 smartphone after the cut

Toshiba will come in for the usual criticism of Windows Mobile devices for using a resistive rather than capacitive touchscreen. Although there doesn’t appear to be a stylus silo in the handset itself, the company confirmed that a stylus would be present in the retail box. Happily, even though the TG01 doesn’t have Windows Mobile 6.5′s larger controls, the sheer scale of the 4.1-inch 800 x 480 display means that there’s plenty of room for fingers to jab. It remains to be seen how much the multi-pane rotating GUI covers up the Microsoft platform; on both demo devices we saw Toshiba reps accessing the standard Today screen and Start menu, though this could well be down to the pre-production status of the particular devices on show.

Minimal hardware controls are fine for most functions – the on-screen keyboard looks quite a bit like that of the iPhone, we noticed – but we’re not so sure about gaming. The 1GHz Snapdragon chipset should handle mobile games with aplomb, but the method of control demonstrated in the driving game Toshiba showed us seemed less than streamlined, requiring multiple taps on different parts of the screen. The photo in the gallery below, showing a rather contorted set of fingers all trying to touch the screen at once, is a good example of this.

On the positive side, while title developers – and Toshiba claim to be working with several to produce downloadable, internet-enabled games – will have to work to finesse the control interface, one thing they won’t need to worry about is performance. The video and gaming running on the demo TG01 handsets were both smooth, slick and high-resolution, even in the less than ideal lighting environment; we’d love to know if Toshiba plan a TV-out cable, as we’ve a feeling the TG01 would do a decent job hooked up to a full-size screen as a portable media player. Out of the box it supports DivX files, and of course thanks to full Flash support you can play online video too.

In the hand, the TG01 is surprisingly lightweight and alluringly thin. At just 9.9mm it’s significantly slimmer than the iPhone 3G (at 12.3mm) and the Touch HD (at 12mm), despite having a larger display than both rivals. The casing is finished in soft-touch plastic, with a chromed strip running around the edges, and aside from a few hardware buttons – camera (controlling the 3.2-megapixel shooter that seems to lack a flash of any sort), volume and power being two obvious ones – and the touch-sensitive “home”, “back” and scroll-strip along the base of the display, and the microUSB port lurking under a hatch, it’s generally a clean design. Make no mistake, this is a very pocket-friendly handset.

Toshiba wouldn’t say exactly when the TG01 would launch – only over the Summer in Europe - nor would they reveal which carriers they’re in discussion with, only that an exclusivity deal was likely. We’re hoping to have more information about the TG01 after Mobile World Congress, but before then we’ve got live video of the handset itself.

The company and Pioneer have collaborated to enable DivX video support on three Pioneer Blu-Ray players, namely the BDP-LX71, BDP-LX08 and BDP-51FD. Joining PS3 and twenty others Divx approved Blu-ray players already in the markets, the trio of Hi-Def players allow consumers to playback DivX video burned on CDs or DVDs.

Previously announced Hi-Def devices that bear DivX logo are newest Blu-ray players from Panasonic, Funai, Philips, Marantz and Denon. None have proven to support DivX video in full 1080 HD playback but Panasonic looks to change the game with latest announcement of 45nm UniPhier System LSI chip- first Divx HD certified processor.

Sep 29, 2008 DivX, Inc. (NASDAQ:DIVX), a digital media company, today announced the DivX Certification™ of three new Blu-ray player models from Pioneer (PN: BDP-LX71, BDP-LX08, BDP-51FD).

DivX® technology enables a high-quality experience for digital video and DivX Certification™ of these new Blu-ray players allows consumers to play back DivX video saved on CDs or DVDs. Pioneer’s first DivX Certified Blu-ray Disc Players, featuring high-quality image and sound, will be available across Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand starting in October (BDP-LX08 to be released in Europe only).

“Our standard DVD players that obtained DivX Certification have shipped worldwide, meeting the increasing consumer demand for devices that play high-quality DivX video. By supporting DivX in our newest Blu-ray Disc Player, we are now able to provide consumers with a greater video experience,” said Ryuichiro Yoshimura, General Manager of Video Planning Department, Pioneer Corporation.

“Pioneer has a strong reputation for design and quality in their Blu-ray products and we are pleased to contribute to this by enabling support for our premium video technology,” said Kevin Hell, Chief Executive Officer, DivX, Inc. “These new players illustrate our increasing influence within emerging product categories and will allow consumers to enjoy their favorite digital video on the latest home entertainment platform.”

Products that bear the DivX Certified® logo have undergone a rigorous testing program to ensure interoperability, security and visual quality. DivX Certified products enable consumers to create, play, and share high-quality video content across a wide range of devices and platforms.

Divx is a video codec with ability to compress lengthy video segments into small sizes while maintaining relatively high visual quality. Its format is rather popular for ripping movies and is specifically used by pirates to share movies due to the smaller file sizes. Presently, there’ve been several Divx-certified Blu-ray players in the market, from the best seller Sony’s PS3 (firmware 2.10) to the economical Funai B1-M110. Soon, we’ll get to see Blu-ray releases from Panasonic to support DivX with Full 1080p playback.

The company is very positive toward the industry first Dvix certified Blu-Ray player and hopes the popular digital media format bring in more support for Blu-Ray. “We are very confident this product will be very popular in the European and Russian markets.” The rest of the world, try PS3 with FW 2.10, it supports Divx.

The end of Format war is slowly encouraging more vendor support and development toward Blu-Ray Player. We’ll get to see a more universal Blu-ray player sooner than expected, hopefully.

I love reporting on these amazing foreign personal media players knowing that it will be years before we ever have the video support or even the audio file support they off in a single player. These days we are lucky if we get MP3, AAC, and then if the company has one, they’ll throw in some proprietary audio format.

On the video side, that’s where we really get the short end of the stick with usually only one format supported, and even then it’s usually even more specific with how many frames per second and what size the video can be, you nearly have to be a professional video editor to get videos on your iPod. This player, its one of the lower tier players in China and supports DivX, XviD, AVI, 3GP, MPEG-4, MP3 WMA, AAC, WAV, JPEGs, and text files.

It also has a 3” screen and a minimal number of buttons that are also small so they don’t make the player look bad. No word on price or availability, but its probably cheap, and it will probably never make it stateside.

Well, the fall dashboard update landed yesterday at 2AM, and we’ve already covered most of the other features of the update, but one little thing that was almost snuck in is DivX/XviD support. For those not in the know, they are both video encoding formats, if you have ever downloaded a movie from a peer to peer network; chances are good it came in one of these formats.

The convenience of being able to play DivX/XviD movies on my 360 is almost immeasurable, except for one thing, I have my media center PC connected to my Xbox, and use that interface to stream media to my Xbox 360. Well, in case you were wondering, the DivX/XviD support stops short of working with the Extender software on the 360, so that’s a no go, you’ll have to continue using your hacked solution, or use some other method of transferring the DivX films to your Xbox.

Personally I use Transcode360, but I’d be more than willing to ditch the extra process in exchange for a solution from MS, but alas it hasn’t yet come. Although, the promised release of new Vista Media Center Extenders at the beginning of next year, featuring DivX support, well that gives me hope that and update will be released for the 360 to allow the same functionality.

Xbox 360 gets DivX/XviD playback, we put it to the test [via gizmag]

According to RegHardware, Kevin Hell, the CEO of DivX stated that game developers can take advantage of the decoder technology by updating their SDK to version 2.0 which was released to developers at the beginning of this month.

Many rumors are floating around the media outlet that DivX is also planning to offer the same feature to other console maker such as Microsoft for its Xbox 360 console.

Then there is the FM radio with built in recorder, a USB host, MPEG-4 video recorder, and up to 1280×720 HD output. Codec support includes FLAC, DivX, and OGG, and I assume there is a sufficiently longer list of other codecs supported as that list doesn’t have any picture formats and no MP3 support in the list either.

They are going to be sold in 30 and 60 gigabyte capacities for about $387 and $465 respectively. So, go get one and tell us what you think.

This digital photo frame clearly has a severe case of mistaken identity. I think DivX and Xvid playback are a good place to draw the line between a digital photo frame and a fairly amazing PMP.

If not then the WMV, VOB, DAT, and MPEG-4 might help strengthen my case that this is not a digital photo frame. It also plays MP3s and Ogg as well as displaying TXT documents, and then there is JPEG support, the only real evidence other than the screen that this is in fact a digital photo frame.

Hardware wise it has a 2.8-inch screen, voice recording, and AV out as well as up to 8GB of flash memory and a SD card slot in case 8GB is insufficient for you. No price or availability, though its made in China, so you’ll probably never see it.
