When you pick up an iPad 2, you know you’re in for a great experience in all forms of working with the tablet form factor – in software, in hardware, and in camera-wait, the camera is terrible – that’s why when the Disney-branded Sakar AppClix camera came up this week in our news barrel, we payed attention. What this camera does is attach to the bottom of your iPad in the iPod 30-pin port and acts as a camera that begins to bring you into a reasonable space for shooting photos and videos. While the iPad 2′s camera was never one to win any awards for quality, Sakar may well bring the art back to iPhone levels with none other than Mickey Mouse himself.

This camera is 7-megapixels strong, has a 1.5-inch LCD display for one reason or another, and has a microSD card slot for those of you not planning on instantly transferring your pics over to the iPad. Indeed you do not have to have the camera attached to the iPad to take photos, but if you want to hold the most awkwardly broad shooter in the world, complete with the most famous mouse in the world as well, feel free! This device will set you back $60 USD and works with a free app you can download from the iTunes Appstore.

The app allows you to do basic edits and add all sorts of Disney-themed graphics and backgrounds and all that good stuff, the transfer process from camera to app to Facebook, email, etcetera, seeming to be quite simple. You can do a similar transfer process if you’ve got Apple’s Camera Connection kit, but it’s not nearly as fun then is it? In this Mickey Mouse shooter you’ve got as close to an iPad-based quality camera experience as you’re going to get (until the iPad 3 rolls around, of course.)

Netflix and Amazon have each bolstered their streaming media catalogs, as the two rivals continue to spar over which has the fullest offering of TV shows and movies. Netflix announced an extension of its Disney-ABC deal that will see new and back-catalog titles including Alias and Switched At Birth added to the roster, while Amazon has revealed a Disney-ABC deal of its own that will see many of the same shows available to Amazon Prime customers and Kindle Fire users.

Netflix already had an agreement in place with Disney-ABC, which saw the company offering streaming access to shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, Ugly Betty and Hannah Montana. This new deal extends that back-catalog access, as well as adding new Disney and ABC shows to the line-up. These will include Private Practice, Brothers and Sisters, Switched at Birth, Secret Lives of the American Teenager, Make It or Break It, Phineas and Ferb, Shake It Up, Pair of Kings and Kick Buttowski.

Amazon’s new contract, meanwhile, will also see Marvel animated shows on offer, though the exact titles are yet to be confirmed. Amazon Prime members will be able to stream them to their Kindle Fire tablets, which will begin shipping midway through next month, as well as to PCs, Macs, and TVs with the relevant hardware.

Though this particular Google doodle doesn’t necessarily do anything all that fantastic when it comes to Web 2.0, it was and continues to be the utterly engaging artwork that Mary Blair had mastery over that continues to be the center point on this, the 100th year since she was born to this earth. If you don’t recognize the style of the work that Google has replicated here, you’ll certainly know the background illustrations from these classic Disney films: “Cinderella,” “Peter Pan,” and “Alice in Wonderland.” Once again Google hits on a reminder of what was certainly a gift from beyond in this lovely artist.

Blair has also recently been honored via a lecture by the name of “Mary Blair’s World of Color – A Centennial Tribute” as given at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by a collection of big contemporary names. On the panel for this lecture were Eric Goldberg who was a supervising animator for Disney’s “Aladdin” and the director of “Pocahontas,” Peter Docter who was the director of the movies “Monsters, Inc” and “Up,” and many more. This was not a woman who was destined to be forgotten.

Included in the gallery below is a small collection of Mary Blair works, most of them from Disney films. This sort of painting and illustration was to influence generations of artists and remains a staple in illustration teachings in design colleges today. Truly a master of her tools was Blair, and Google is good to note it! For more Mary Blair work, head to http://magicofmaryblair.com/ where there’s loads of prints to purchase and colors to look upon.

For those of you following the sale of Hulu – oh wait, you didn’t know Hulu was for sale? Well it was, not it isn’t. Follow us for a minute or two as we run down the path from original sale to bidders to bidders dropping out to Hulu just saying “fine, forget about it, I’ll just keep to myself!” It’s all very dramatic. It all started back in June when Hulu was rumored to be putting themselves up for sale with Yahoo! tipped as a bidder.

It was July that Microsoft dropped out of the bidding war, no more Windows on the Glee! toter. July also had Amazon, AT&T, and Verizon Wireless thinking about bidding on Hulu, but as it turns out, carriers and keepers of the books and movies of the world not ending up able to reach any sort of agreement on the big H. DirecTV, Starz, and Netflix got in on the war, but they clashed opinions and wants to the max.

Then there’s the most recent news from September where we heard that there were too many low ball bids to continue the sale successfully. Turns out that was probably pretty true, as today Hulu and crew have released the following statement:

The following is a joint statement from Hulu owners News Corporation, Providence Equity Partners, The Walt Disney Company and the Hulu senior management team:

“Since Hulu holds a unique and compelling strategic value to each of its owners, we have terminated the sale process and look forward to working together to continue mapping out its path to even greater success. Our focus now rests solely on ensuring that our efforts as owners contribute in a meaningful way to the exciting future that lies ahead for Hulu.”

What will they do next?! We shall see!

Now anyone in the world can visit the Walt Disney theme park, even if it is only in the virtual world. At E3 this morning, the new Disneyland Adventures release was confirmed for the Kinect. It is a children’s themed title that appears to be a collection of mini-games based on the real world theme park. Even though it is cartoony and geared at younger audiences, it looks like anyone who enjoys the Disney theme for a casual gaming experience should like this game.

None of the games look like direct copies of the park rides, but some of them, like Peter Pan’s Flight, seem to have similarities. Overall, it looks like most of the mini-games are completely new creations that just use the Disney themes for inspiration. One of the other mini-games revealed at E3 today was based on Alice in Wonderland which we believe will be titled Through the Looking Glass.

All of the mini-games appear to be very similar. Basically characters travel though a variety of different levels via rolling, running, flying, or jumping to collect coins. Like other Kinect titles, the players will use their body, or bodies in multiplayer, to maneuver through or around obstacles. Definitely a family/children’s game, this is no doubt Microsoft’s attempt at capturing more of that segment of the market share. With the Disney name attached, this title has a good chance to draw away some of the Wii audience.

There are many things people want to recreate from movies to see if they’re possible and what the experience would be like if they were real. One of those would be the flying house from Disney/Pixar’s Oscar-winning film “Up”. Some engineers and an army of volunteers proved that movie magic can happen in real life.

The National Geographic Channel has a new show premiering this fall called “How Hard Can it Be?” and in one episode the project will be to lift a house using balloons like in the animated movie “Up”. The producers didn’t build an actual working house, but really just a shell of a house that measured 16-feet wide x 18-feet tall. The crew went to a private airfield just outside of Los Angeles to perform the experiment, constructing the house and outfitting it with 300 8-feet tall colored weather balloons. Each balloon took an entire helium tank to fill up.

On March 5th the tiny house was lifted into the air and reached more than 10,000 feet, staying up in the air for about an hour. The show won’t air until this fall, but the cameras of ABC’s Good Morning America were there to capture the event. It’s pretty amazing they actually got a house to float and stay up there for that long. You’ll have to watch the entire episode when it airs to see just how they did everything.

Disney has snapped up game engine developer Rocket Pack, whose plugin-free browser-based HTML5 system allows for easy coding with just JavaScript and CSS. According to TechCrunch the terms of the deal have not been made public, though Rocket Pack are believed to have been scooped for between $10m and $20m; Disney’s interest likely stems from the potential flexibility in creating cross-platform, install-free games that don’t need App Store approval to be distributed.

“We can confirm that The Walt Disney Company has acquired Rocketpack, an integrated solution for plugin-free browser game development. Through a merger agreement, Rocketpack is now a wholly owned subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company reporting into Disney Interactive Media Group (DIMG)” Disney spokesperson

Since it’s HTML5 based rather than Flash, it means even Apple devices can access the games, and with iOS 4.3 bringing the new Nitro JavaScript engine to the mobile Safari browser, titles should be even faster )as we’ve seen suggested in early benchmarks of the iPad 2). Games can also be packaged as native apps, if preferred, and there’s potential for integrated with social networks too.

There’s an example of a title created with the Rocket Engine, Warimals, which you can try now.

Disney has bought social network Togetherville today for an undisclosed amount. Disney is combining the popularity of social networks with its popularity amongst kids. Togetherville operates just like other social networking sites and uses Facebook to enable connections, but the target users are kids aged 10 and under.

Togetherville allows parents to monitor their kid’s activity and gives kids a more secure environment to socialize online. Parents can approve their kids friends request and can even connect with other parents of children on Togetherville if the parents are on Facebook. Parents can choose pre-selected messages for their kids or have those messages checked by the parent before being sent out.

Kids can form “neighborhoods” with their Facebook friends where they can form their own group of friends and watch videos, play games, and create art. Parents and children can connect to their school communities, which will allow parents and children to interact with friends from school without having the parents to connect through Facebook.

The Disney phone packs a 3.8 inch screen with some sort of 3D capability, a 9.6-megapixel camera, possibly TV tuner, and an app that puts the popular sticker booth in your hand as it lets you add bows and cat whiskers onto your own original photos.

The phone has plenty of Disney exclusive features such as live wallpapers that change depending on your time zone, Disney emoticons to impress your friends, and seven different Disney designs: Disney castle, Minnie Mouse plant print, Minnie Mouse polka dot, Star white, and mouse-patterns in pink, white, and gold. The phone is only available in Japan and is not planned for a US release.

If you’re a TRON fan, then you’ve probably been pretty happy with the TRON-themed accessories that have been released the last few months. You may have even given some serious thought into buying your own light cycle (we can’t blame you). But, if you didn’t want to spend the money to race around your city on one, maybe you’d prefer to stay in a room designed specifically to look like it was removed from the TRON world, and shoved into an ice hotel.

Designed by Ben Rousseau and Ian Douglas–Jones, of the UK-based Extreme Design, the new room is called the Legacy of the River, and it was created to bring the world of TRON to life. Just, in an ice hotel. The new room is part of the Art Suite within the world’s largest ice hotel, which is located in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden. The designers used “futuristic” lighting sources, which are aimed to use far less power and energy than traditional lighting, throughout the room, as well as through the furniture itself.

Here’s what Douglas-Jones had to say about the project:

“We are both massive TRON fans, so the timing of the release of Disney’s new 3D high-tech adventure, TRON: Legacy, this month was absolutely perfect. The suite itself takes most of it’s influence from a nightclub scene in the film involving one of our favorite music artist Daft Punk, who wrote the score for the film.”

Check out the video below to see the room, and some of the set-up process that went into it. And if you’re interested in stopping by, or staying fo awhile, the room will officially open tomorrow.

Disney Consumer Products and Monster Cable have teamed up to release a pair of Tron Legacy Daft Punk headphones, and they’re just so lovely and fantastic looking it makes my eyes water a little bit. They’re part of a series of Tron Legacy themed audio gear and toys being put out by the team. These over-the-ear type headphones have, YES, lights installed so you can feel like you’re totally Tron-ing it up while you continue to watch the trailers over and over again, avoiding the books and pieces of silverware that would otherwise be thrown at you because your family members are tired of hearing the same commercial over and over again! Hooray!

And if you’re taking a break from the trailers, you can indulge in the surround-sound mix of Daft Punk’s soundtrack for the movie as it’s included in the box! The LED Light Drive System that lights up your head to look like you’re on the Grid is a first for Monster headphones. This set also has noise-isolation and can double as a headset with its removable boom mic which can be attached to either ear. And they cost $350 USD.

The deal will include titles such as Grey’s Anatomy, Brothers & Sisters and Desperate Housewives, but also include Disney Channel and ABC Family movies such as High School Musical, High School Musical 2 and Camp Rock.

Netflix is promising that content will be available as little as 15 days after initial broadcast, which is still less timely than many online catch-up sites but certainly better than nothing. Access will be included in Netflix’s $7.99 per month streaming-only package.

Press Release:

Netflix and Disney-ABC Television Group Announce Deal to Stream Array of ABC Network, Disney Channel and ABC Family Shows to Netflix Members

Agreement Includes Prior Seasons of ABC Hits ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ ‘Desperate Housewives’ and ‘Brothers & Sisters,’ plus Favorites from Disney Channel and First-Time Netflix Access to ABC Family Shows

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. and BURBANK, Calif., Dec. 8, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — Netflix, Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX) and Disney-ABC Television Group today announced a new licensing agreement between the two companies that will allow Netflix to stream hundreds of episodes from the ABC Television Network, Disney Channel and – for the first time – ABC Family over the Internet.

The agreement, brokered by Disney-ABC Domestic Television, will add significantly to the growing selection of movies and TV episodes that can be streamed from Netflix. Once made available to Netflix from Disney-ABC – which, for relevant programming, will be no earlier than 15 days after initial telecast – episodes can be streamed instantly with Netflix memberships starting at $7.99 a month.

Among the highlights, Netflix members will be able to enjoy:

Prior season episodes of current ABC hit series “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Desperate Housewives” and, for the first time on Netflix, “Brothers & Sisters,” all of which are among the network’s most successful and popular TV franchises in recent years.
Every episode of recent ABC favorites “Lost” and “Ugly Betty,” the latter making its streaming debut at Netflix.
Each season of several hit series from ABC Studios, including “Scrubs” and “Reaper,” which are both new additions to Netflix.
A host of content from the Disney Channel, including the hits “Phineas and Ferb” and “Good Luck Charlie,” which are also new to Netflix; updated and expanded offerings of “The Suite Life on Deck” and “Wizards of Waverly Place;” and library offerings from the smash hits “Hannah Montana” and “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody.”
A wide range of content from ABC Family, marking the introduction of ABC Family content streaming from Netflix. Included are the hit series “Greek,” “Make It or Break It,” “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” and “Melissa & Joey.”

“TV content streamed from Netflix has proven to be immensely popular with our members,” said Ted Sarandos, the company’s chief content officer. “Adding to our existing Disney-ABC lineup with great network and cable shows, and opening up ABC Family for the first time, are important steps in creating a wide and diverse selection of content Netflix members of all ages can watch.”

In addition to the hundreds of TV episodes included in the agreement, Disney Channel and ABC Family movies such as “High School Musical,” “High School Musical 2,” “Camp Rock,” and “Beauty & the Briefcase,” as well as new releases “Avalon High,” “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam” and “Revenge of the Bridesmaids,” will also be available to watch at Netflix.

What started as a Star Wars phenomenon, has certainly grown. There are now LEGO-themed video games for franchises like Indiana Jones, Batman, and even Rock Band. There’s even a future update to the Star Wars line-up coming in February of 2011, based on the Clone Wars story arch. And now another successful franchise is about to get the block rework, as Disney has formally announced that the latest LEGO game from TT Games, LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game will be hitting retail shelves next year.

Interestingly enough, Disney cancelled another Pirates-based game earlier this year, but this one was more of a full-fledged title, and not based on the LEGO universe. The new title, which will launch along side the latest installment in the movie franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, will focus on Jack Sparrow again, but you’ll also be able to choose up to 70 playable characters.

The events in the game will take place during the first three movies (The Curse of the Black Pearl, Dead Man’s Chest, and At World’s End), but will also have some moments from the new movie, too. TT Games will be launching the title on every major console, including the PC, and mobile consoles. It’s set to hit shelves in May, 2011.

Gowalla has inked a deal with Disney, which will see visitors to Disney parks able to check-in at over 100 locations across Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Resort in California, earning featured stamps as you go. The Gowalla Passport pages will show what’s happening at the parks, together with maps, check-in streams and other special items, and each ride or attraction can be automatically tweeted or announced on Facebook.

For Gowalla, the opportunity is to expand their 500,000 strong user base, and hopefully encourage some of those who try out the Disney check-ins to keep using the service after they get back home. Disney, meanwhile, gets to further publicize its parks and build social network engagement.

Gowalla expects to have around 200 locations outfitted with stamps by the end of the year, and those who have already visited prior to the deal’s announcement will retroactively get the stamps if they checked in while at the parks. You can see the most popular places – and examples of Passport pages – here.

After seeing a movie in theaters, some people immediately start counting down the days until they can officially purchase the movie on DVD or in any other media. And while on-demand services, from companies like In Demand, offer up movies “still in theaters,” these are usually priced higher than the other movies in their catalog, and don’t necessarily count the more popular films. And perhaps that’s exactly why some movie studios are contemplating an in-home option for consumers, which would see them charging $30 for viewing a movie before it gets released on DVD.

Sony Pictures, Disney, and Warner Bros. are all named specifically to be in talks with In Demand (a partnership with Cox Communications), as well as Time Warner Cable and Comcast Corporation. The talks are in hopes to somehow create new sales numbers from movies, as the numbers in sales from DVDs are beginning to decline. The studios are trying to figure out a way to charge consumers for viewing movies “early.” Instead of waiting the three to four months, and sometimes longer, to get your hands on the DVD copy of a movie you enjoyed, the studios would let you watch them right on your TV, sooner, but for a higher price.

To make matters more interesting, Disney is contemplating the option of providing this premium service on Internet-connected devices, like Sony’s PlayStation 3 or Microsoft’s Xbox 360. The premium services on these devices would be the same on others, and still make the consumer pay upwards of $30 to get their eyes fixated on a new release movie, before it releases on DVD.

The tests are supposed to begin later this year from Time Warner, but there’s no word on how the tests will be rolled out, or how consumers would be able to gain access to the movies. While it would make sense that the movies would be made available through services already put in place, and by setting up a premium channel of some kind, that movie is completely up to the studios and those they are talking with. As for Disney, they are thinking about setting up tests which would start in the first half of 2011, and be centered around the release of one particular movie. Which movie is probably still up for grabs.

And while Sony has tried the same deal, but cheaper, in the past with single movies, like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs in 2009, it seems that the company isn’t saying what their new test would be quite yet. Sony also didn’t comment on allowing the premium services on their PlayStation 3. And Microsoft didn’t respond, either.

What do you think? Charging $30 for a movie, before it comes out on DVD may seem like a lot, but is it something you’d pay?

Interesting or not, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard that Apple was working on 99-cent TV show rentals. It’s been rumored a few times, actually. Spanning the full gamut of Apple-branded devices, from the iPad to Apple TV, in fact. But now it sounds like the talks are beginning to actually make sense, and Apple may be closer than ever to actually launching something, instead of letting the rumors fuel the whole thing.

According to “three people familiar with the plan,” Apple is supposedly in “advanced talks” with News Corp., hoping to get Fox TV shows included in the deal. This is coming from Bloomberg, speaking with the unnamed sources. According to the report, Disney and CBS are included in the conversations as well, but there’s no word on how those talks are going.

According to the sources, the episodes would only be viewable for 48 hours, and that’s probably before you view them. Most “rentals” usually only last about 24 hours, once you hit that play button. No mention, though, of streaming-only episodes, either, which would make a lot of sense for devices like the iPad. We’ll see if this turns into anything, or if they’re just more rumors spinning the old mill.

[via Bloomberg]

Anyone who follows the gaming world knows that there are some smoking piles of crap on the market when it comes to controllers. A new series of controllers based on Disney properties have been unveiled by PDP and they are all kinds of cool.

Two of the products are Wii related. These Wii accessories include a stand and a paintbrush for the nunchuck. Both are themed after the Epic Mickey game set to launch. One holds the Wii Remote in the grasp of some sort of black blob that appears to be the gulf oil spill trying to kill the Wii. The other is a paintbrush cover for the nunchuck.

My favorite are the Tron Legacy controllers that are going to be offered for the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii. The controllers have the Tron name and blue glowing lines. The Tron gear will sell for $50 each and land this fall. The cool Mickey gear doesn’t have price or launch info just yet.

Only the metallic blue version of the netbook is available, rather than the pink model, and aside from the child-friendly branding there’s little new in the hardware. As with other 8.9-inch Eee PCs, the Netpal has a 1024 x 600 resolution display, Intel Atom N270 processor and 1GB of RAM, while storage is courtesy of a 16GB SSD.

There’s also WiFi b/g/n, three USB 2.0 ports and a 0.3-megapixel webcam, and the whole thing weighs in at 2.20lbs. No sign of the tipped 160GB version. OS is Windows XP, which ASUS and Disney then augment with various parental-control features, access to Radio Disney, and custom themes from Cars and Toy Story.

Looks like VUDU got onto something valuable here. They have just added a bunch of movies from the Disney catalog, allowing people to purchase and download about 60 new titles for expanded entertainment.

The added movies are mostly from Disney’s maturer studios and include movies like No Country for Old Men. However, they are also offering very popular kid’s titles like High School Musical 3. What makes this special is VUDU is apparently the first device that is offering permanent, downloadable versions of Disney movies in HD.

So far, other movie providers can only offers these movies as rentals. The movies will be in 720p and the VUDU HDX formats. This should be interesting to watch, especially since iTunes doesn’t yet allow you to purchase HD movies.

It seems Disney has decided to buy an equity stake in the popular video streaming website, Hulu. The deal is looking pretty good for both Disney and Hulu. So, does that mean YouTube can eat their heart out?

Announced this morning, the deal makes it so three Disney suits are put on the Hulu board. This means they’ll now have an equal say as the original execs from News Corps. and NBS Universal. But the part of this deal users will actually be able to notice is the inclusion of Disney videos on the site.

The majority of video posted by Disney will include Disney and ABC TV shows like Lost plus popular items from the company’s catalog. So now the real question is, will CBS be jumping on board anytime soon? Will this move help Hulu overtake YouTube? We’ll be keeping our eyes on this one.

In fact, Disney is supposedly discussing the move to show their ABC TV shows on the website. However, other Disney-owned shows might make it over as well.

TV shows like Lost might be making their Hulu debut soon. But Disney Channel shows and other Disney network programming could be shown as well. There’s no word on how close Disney and Hulu might be to making a deal, but the company is much more interested than before, now that Hulu has jumped in popularity.

Should this deal go through, Hulu would then have three of the four major networks on their web video service. This could make the site a more viable option than even iTunes. However, Steve Jobs is on Disney’s board of directors, so we’ll just have to see how this one turns out.
