Google snaps up IP from Softcard, strikes deal with carriers for Wallet

Google Wallet is no Apple Pay, largely because Google can’t play the strong-arm game Apple does about what software is on their iPhone. Not long ago, Google Wallet was sidelined by carriers, as they intended to create their own mobile payment system. Known as Softcard, the app did much of what Google Wallet did, except it had the blessing of carriers. According to a new report, the line between Softcard and Google Wallet (as well as carriers) is blurring.

Today, Iowa announced that digital ID “cards” would be officially allowed for use. An “official” app housing your driver’s license is being released by the Department of Transportation in Iowa, and protected with a PIN. The move is lauded by many as our first official move into a digital realm, where we can finally shed ourselves of those pesky wallets we’ve dreaded for decades. Digital ID cards are fun, but major glaring issues persist. When you weigh the benefits against the potential problems, digital isn’t (yet) all it’s cracked up to be.

Google closing Wallet API for website payment processing

In the mobile payment space, Apple Pay dominates the headlines lately, but Google Wallet has been riding its coattails admirably. Via the web, there are even more big players, with Amazon and PayPal dominating the online transaction game. Though they don’t specifically note why, Google is taking Wallet out of the hands of many Developers, and will be discontinuing its use for digital goods in March of next year. This definitely affects those who use Google as a payment service via their website, but doesn’t affect Google Play at all.

Coming off a rather long testing phase, Isis Mobile Wallet has launched nationwide today. The digital wallet service is arriving with support from three of the big four US carriers and basically means users will be able to make mobile payments with their NFC-equipped smartphone. The catch of course, having a supported device and finding a location that will accept mobile payments.

Google Wallet comes to Gmail with money attachments

No longer are email attachments only limited to files. Today, Google announced that Gmail will be getting Google Wallet integration, where users will be able to send money to recipients by attaching a Google Wallet payment to an email. A new money icon will appear in the compose toolbar next to the Google Drive icon where you'll be able to attach money to your message, giving an all-new to "penny for your thoughts."

Samsung announces new Wallet app to take on Apple’s Passbook

During a developer conference at Mobile World Congress today, Samsung announced Wallet, an Apple Passbook-style ticket and coupon management app that looks to compete against Apple's own offering. Samsung has already launched the open API to the app, and the tool will allow users to save tickets, boarding passes, coupons, and other paperwork to a central hub on their mobile devices.
