Toshiba REGZA SD-P96DT & SD-P76S keep the portable DVD player lights burning

Toshiba has outed a new pair of portable DVD players, the 9-inch REGZA SD-P96DT and 7-inch REGZA SD-P76S, though they've at least slotted a TV tuner into the larger model to give it at least a vague air of modernism. The SD-P96DT runs at 800 x 480 resolution and has both 1-Seg digital and analog tuners, while the SD-P76S makes do with a 480 x 234 display and no tuners at all. Read The Full Story

alessiTab Android home tablet to get €399 November release

Alessi's Android-based alessiTab is finally approaching availability, with the L-shaped 10.1-inch capacitive slate set to hit Italian shelves in November.  designboom scored an invite to the launch event - held at designer Stefana Giovannoni's own home - to get a demo of the tablet, which packs 1GB of storage, a DVB-T digital TV tuner, WiFi b/g and an HDMI output. Slingbox PRO-HD Freeview Review

Sling Media’s Slingbox PRO-HD for the European market has been a long time coming, two years in fact, though the streaming media market has largely left its niche alone in the meantime.  As with the US model, the PRO-HD promises to take your SD and HD video sources – cable TV box, DVR, DVD player or even CCTV hardware – and squirt it over the internet; however, this new version also includes a Freeview tuner to add free-to-air digital TV to that list.  Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

Slingbox PRO-HD gets Euro update with Freeview tuner

Motorola tablet tipped for Verizon FiOS TV support

Motorola's tablet plans with Verizon continue to gather steam, according to the FT, with the latest rumors from those "briefed on the plans" tipping a 10-inch Android based slate that would integrated with the carrier's FiOS digital TV system.  Although neither company has confirmed that the tablet is in development, it's suggested that the slate could arrive as early as fall in the US. Pixela digital tuner helps shrink portable TV

Mobile TV may have met with patchy success - check out Philip Berne's diatribe from last week on where the technology goes wrong - but if Pixela have their way we could be seeing it show up in more devices (and smaller ones too).  They've unveiled their RFS3000Q multiband digital tuner, a 6 x 6 mm square receiver that supports the Japanese ISDB-T system as well as North American ATSC and European DMB-T transmissions. Elgato have launched a new digital TV tuner intended for use with PCs and Macs, but while most such tuners plug in via USB 2.0 the EyeTV Netstream DTT hooks up to your home network.  Recognising the fact that many users lack decent DVB-T/Freeview coverage or a hard-wired antenna in every place they want to view TV at home, Elgato's new system streams content to PCs and Macs via WiFi or wired ethernet. Solaris Mobile Pocket Gateway Device adds DVB-HS TV via WiFi

If you want to know whether mobile TV is a difficult pitch, just take a look at Qualcomm's FloTV.  Still, the promise of digital broadcasting being consumed by mobile users is obviously a tempting one; Dublin-based Solaris Mobile have announced that their own hybrid satellite and terrestrial wireless "S-Band" TV system will launch with a Pocket Gateway Device, pulling in content on the 2.00GHz band and squirting it to a smartphone via WiFi.
