‘digital cameras’ Stories

After the niche success of the Superheadz Digital Harinezumi camera, it comes as little surprise that rivals in the “odd photography” segment will emerge.  First up is the Exemode SQ28m, a 21g mini-cam measuring a slimline 53 x 23 x 19 mm and capable of taking some particularly trippy images or videos with its 1.95-megapixel CMOS sensor.

Micro Four Thirds lovers, break open your piggy-banks now!  Olympus’ PEN E-P2 digital camera has finally gone on sale, having been announced all the way back in early November, but the price still isn’t any easier to swallow.  Amazon and various other retailers have the E-P2 – which packs a 12.3-megapixel sensor and interchangeable lens support into a compact body – priced at $1,099.

The iPhone 3GS’ 3-megapixel camera is hardly a threat to RED, but modders can’t stop trying to tweak it into doing things Apple never intended.  An excellent example of that deviant art is Bhautik Joshi’s Phone-O-Scope SLR lens mod, basically an optical coupler that allows you to mount an SLR lens onto the iPhone.

Indecently high-end camera manufacturer RED have outed more details and some tempting photos of their RED Scarlet cameras, together with a few new or updated accessories.  Pretty much as “entry level” as RED can manage, the Scarlet 2/3 will come in two bundles: the basic camera “brain” at $2,750, which can be used with various adapters to fit RED’s own optics or those from Nikon or Canon, and the Scarlet 8X Fixed bundle, which for $4,750 gets you the “brain”, a fixed 8x zoom, CF module, 2.8-inch touchscreen, REDmote, a battery and a travel charger.

zoom lensNEC have developed a technology that, they claim, will cut out zoom lens and auto-focus motor noise during video recording.  The system uses a microphone and DSP that generates “pseudo-noise” to cancel out background buzzing from the camcorder’s own hardware; the advantage of a predominantly software system is that it can be fitted to even the smallest of point-and-shoot camcorders and video-capable digital cameras.

As well as ongoing, steady noise from hardware, the system is apparently capable of cutting out intermittent or unexpected sounds, such as noise from the cylinder lens or mirrors.  In fact it’s even clever enough to take into account the ageing of motors and tweak the “pseudo-noise” accordingly.

The best laid plans can so easily go awry, and while Samsung’s DualView TL225 digital camera – which has a second, front-mounted display – seemed like such a great idea, the end result is actually tipped as more than a little disappointing.  Wired have been putting the TL225 through its paces, and they’ve concluded that not only does the second screen cause its own share of problems rather than solve them, the underlying camera itself is a let-down.

Thanks to previews on the company’s own site, the launch of the new Olympus PEN E-P2 Micro Four Thirds camera comes as little surprise.  Still, we’ve been waiting to see exactly what tweaks and changes – beyond an optional electronic viewfinder – the company has made, and while we’ll save our final judgement until the reviews come in, right now it’s looking like a reasonable upgrade.  The PEN E-P2 adds a continuous autofocus tracking system which can be used in both still and video modes, and adds that all-important accessory connector port for various add-ons to the hot-shoe.

Olympus' own little Pen E-P2 tip may have been nothing more than a menu mention, but thanks to 43rumors we now have a better idea not only what the Micro Four Thirds camera might look like, but what its rumored rangefinder might look like.  As for a timescale for the Pen E-P2's launch, Olympus have apparently sent out invitations for a press event on Friday November 13th at the Photo Fair in Stockholm.

Confirmation of Olympus’ second Micro Four Thirds camera, the Pen E-P2, has been spotted over at the company’s Chinese site.  While there’s no actual product page for the E-P2 – and as such no definitive specifications – it is listed as a new camera under the Pen Digital category.

Double-take time again, when a press release drops happily proclaiming “digital camera for under $10k”, but when the manufacturer is Mamiya and the DSLR is the Mamiya DM22 you know you’re onto something special.  Hot on the heels of their DM33 and DM56 cameras comes an “entry level” model, packing 22-megapixels, a vast 48 x 36mm sensor and an ISO range of 25 – 400.
