Gateway FX, SX and DX Series desktops get Intel Core i3/i5/i7 updates

Gateway has given its desktop range a shot of Core i3, i5 and i7 in the arm, with new FX Series gaming machines, SX Series small-form-factors and DX Series multimedia machines all getting Intel's latest processors.  Of the three, the FX models are the most interesting; inside their glossy tower casings there's up to a 2.8GHz Core i7 processor, ATI Radeon HD5850 1GB graphics and up to 16GB of DDR3 memory, with prices kicking off at $1,299.99. Acer Aspire Z5600 Review – Multi-touch capable All-in-one PC

Windows 7 touchscreen PCs are slowly growing in number, but the all-in-ones we’ve generally seen have used notebook components rather than desktop ones. That makes for a more compact machine, certainly, but it does mean you miss out on processing power. Acer’s Aspire Z5600, however, packs a full desktop CPU along with a 23-inch multitouch-capable display, and the company sent us over their first review unit to see how well it performs.

HP leak tips Pine Trail Mini 210 netbooks; Pavilion dv4i ultraportable; Core i5/i7 Elite desktops

CES 2010 doesn't kick off until mid-week, but some of HP's new products have seemingly leaked ahead of time.  Several desktops, notebooks and netbooks have been prematurely unveiled, complete with partial specifications and pricing, including a Pine Trail netbook, the HP Mini 210 HD Edition, and a 14-inch ultraportable, the HP Pavilion dv4i.  As for the desktops, Intel's Core i5 and i7 processors make appearances in multiple HP Pavilion Elite HPE machines. IDC says PC Market is back to growth

The poor economy over the last year has really hurt the PC market. If you listen to some of the various PC makers and some analysts, the netbook has hurt the industry along with the economy. Apple Mac Pro gets 3.33GHz Xeon and 2TB options

Apple have quietly updated their Mac Pro desktop systems, adding a new processor option together with greater storage.  Buyers looking for the most powerful Mac Pro around are now able to specify a 3.33GHz Intel Xeon quad-core CPU, which is a whopping $1,200 on top of the regular machine.  The new CPU joins the existing entry-level 2.66GHz Xeon and 2.93GHz Xeon, the latter of which is a $400 option. As for the storage tweak, there's now a 2TB SATA 3Gb/s 7,200rpm hard-drive option, priced at $350, in addition to the previous 640GB and 1TB drives on offer.  The new 2TB drive has 32GB of cache, and is also available on the Apple Xserve server. It's not yet possible to specify two of the 3.33GHz Xeon processors in Apple's 8-core Mac Pro, which still only offers 2.26GHz, 2.66GHz and 2.93GHz options.  Apple have been tipped to release a 6-core, 12-thread Xeon (Gulftown) processor (built on 32nm processes and with 12MB of shared cache) in early 2010.

Core i7 iMac DOA and cracked-screen woes reported

Apple's 27-inch iMac did the Cupertino company proud when we reviewed the Core 2 Duo model last month, but trouble is afoot with the freshly-shipping Core i7 models.  Various Apple support forum threads are suggesting that not only are some Core i7 iMacs turning up DOA and refusing to power on, others have hit desktops only for their eager buyers to discover the glass screen has cracked.
