It’s time again for some rip-roaring action with NVIDIA’s Project SHIELD and the sequel to one of the most awesomely entertaining games on the Android gaming platform: Riptide GP 2! This game takes on what the original blasted forth with awesomely futuristic jet-ski racing made excellent by NVIDIA’s team-up with the developers at Vector Unit for Tegra optimization. In this demo you’ll also be seeing the Project SHIELD implementation of NVIDIA Tegra 4 quad-core processing power with visual splendor popping up on a whopping 72 GPU cores.

The demo you’re seeing here shows one of two different types of futuristic gaming action you’ll be able to experience on Project SHIELD. While you’ll also be able to do streaming gaming from your GeForce-toting PC on your own wireless network, this demonstration is working with pure Android. This game will be released by the time the Project SHIELD hardware becomes available – soon and very soon!

According to NVIDIA, a collection of Tegra 4-specific features are appearing here in addition to the hot-powered action you’ll get outside of the NVIDIA environment. While you’ll be rolling hardest with this game on Tegra 4-toting smart devices, as with the original Riptide GP, you’ll still be able to (eventually) rock and roll with this game on most Android devices. Of course with a Tegra 4 processor you’ll be getting the best of the best!

• Full 3rd Party Controller Support
• Enhanced Water and Particle Effects
• HDR Lighting
• Boosted Reflection Shaders
• All-New Spectator Mode with Project SHIELD

So get pumped up – and have a peek a the timeline below for additional demonstrations of the hardcore power of Project SHIELD as well!

NVIDIA has released another Android Thursday video, this one showcasing Dead Arrival 2, a zombie survival game that arms you with a variety of drop-em-dead weapons and lets you loose in a world full of the undead. You can check out a video of the game in action and its pertinent details after the jump.

From N3V Games, Dead Arrival 2 features an array of custom weapons, including a minigun and rocket launcher, wrapped up in an industrial series of maps filled with snares and zombies. The game is played from a birds-eye perspective that looks similar to the Dead Ops Arcade map on Black Ops. The graphics have been ramped up for SHIELD’s ultra-powerful hardware.

The upgrades for the Tegra 4 become more apparent when the enhancements are shut off via a toggle on the device, which is showcased in the video above. Dead Arrival 2 features dynamic shadows that transform realistically as the player moves, rather than the typical “baked-in” shadows often seen on mobile games.

Other enhancements include physics added to items such as crates, which can be impacted by the player (shot with a rocket, for example), as well as realistic gore when zombies are annihilated. Because no zombie game would be complete without it, there’s also a multi-player mode, which allows gamers to play with other gamers online, or with other Shield-owning friends from the comfort of their own living room.

If you’ve been dying to get your hands on the latest Dead Space installment, you’ll be treated to a little bit of play time with the game earlier than the release date. A demo for Dead Space 3 is set to arrive on January 22 and will be available for downloading on the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network.

The full game is still set for an official release on February 5 (February 8 in Europe), and will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. There was no mention of a PC demo — only Xbox 360 and the PS3 were mentioned, so PC gamers are sadly out of luck and will have to wait until February to experience Dead Space 3‘s gameplay.

If you’re an Xbox 360 owner, you can actually sign up for a week of early access. If you’re interested, you can head to the game’s website and register your Origin ID to receive a code that will allow you to download the demo starting on January 15. However, EA says that quantities of the code are limited, so sign up now if you want to get early access.

According to EA, Dead Space 3 will take the franchise’s “core elements of suspense, horror, action and sound and introduces them to all-new elements.” The game will feature co-op gameplay, which will allows players to work together to tackle “the most ambitious Dead Space experience yet.”

Ever since Notch announced that he was handing off the main development duties on Minecraft to Jens Bergensten, Mojang fans have been waiting with bated breath to see what he’ll do next. Earlier this year, Notch announced a new passion project called 0x10c, but in the time since that announcement, he’s been relatively quiet on the game’s progress. We’ve been given small updates here and there, but nothing all that substantial. Today, however, we’re getting a peek at the first footage from the game, and you can check it out after the jump.

What you see below is nothing more than a bare-bones tech demo, and the video is actually unlisted on YouTube, which suggests that Notch may not have wanted to share this with the masses. In any case, it’s been discovered, and it offers a good look at the engine Notch has developed for the game. In the video, we get to see 0x10c‘s physics at work, and also get to watch as the player character fires off his gun numerous times.

0x10c is still obviously in the very early stages of development, but this should do something to satiate the players who are hungry for Notch’s next game, at least for a little while. The style looks similar to that of Minecraft, but the game should be sporting a different art style by the time Notch releases it. Regardless of the artwork, this is definitely something to get excited about, so have a look at the video below:

0x10c is something of a space management sim set in the far distant future. It will take place in a persistent in-game world, and each player will have a fully programmable 16-bit computer at their disposal. Notch plans to release 0x10c in the same way he released Minecraft, launching an alpha version early and then providing frequent updates, but there isn’t a solid launch date for the game just yet. If you’re interested in finding out more about the game, you can follow development updates on 0x10c‘s official website.

HP‘s TouchPad and Palm devices may be long and gone, but webOS (the mobile OS that these devices ran off of) has been alive and well despite its hardware extinction, mostly thanks to its open-source status. Open webOS, as its now called, went into beta in August, and now a month later, a final stable build is ready for consumption as version 1.0.

The 1.0 release offers some changes that the Open webOS team hopes will offer major new capabilities for developers. The team also mentions that over 75 Open webOS components have been delivered over the past 9 months (totaling over 450,000 lines of code), which means that Open webOS can now be ported to new devices thanks to today’s 1.0 release.

In the video below, Open webOS architect Steve Winston demoes the operating system on a HP TouchSmart all-in-one PC. He mentions that it took the team just “a couple of days” to port Open webOS to the PC that he has in front of him. The user interface doesn’t seem to be performing super smoothly, but you can’t really expect more out of a 1.0 release.

Winston says that possible uses for Open webOS include kiosk applications in places like hotels, and since Open webOS is aimed to work on phones, tablets, and PCs, there’s the possibility that Open webOS could become an all-in-one solution for kiosk or customer service platforms for businesses. Obviously, version 1.0 is just the first step, so the Open webOS team is just getting started with this project and they expect to only improve on it and add new features as time goes on.

Big-screen smartphones may be the fashion, but how about two sizable screens on your next handset with negligible battery impact. SlashGear caught up with E Ink at IFA today to check out the company’s latest prototypes, intended to spur some imagination among potential hardware partners. The mockups have a working e-paper screen filling the back, and a (non-functioning) LCD up front, offering two ways of displaying content simultaneously. And, while these might be concept devices right now, E Ink confirmed to us that there’s at least one vendor looking at using the idea. Read on for a video demo.

As E Ink sees it, an LCD or AMOLED screen on a phone is great for multimedia and browsing, but is wasted on showing text or other persistent data like network status and battery level. Instead, the whole rear of the phone – also typically wasted space – is filled with an e-paper screen, that consumes minimal battery life (only requiring power when the content is changed).

The e-paper display itself is incredibly thin, and even with a protective plastic coating – making it just about shatterproof – is roughly as thick as a typical phone battery cover. E Ink’s concepts used functional e-paper, and plugged into a driver unit as per in our video demo were able to change on the fly; the LCD was simply printed on.

What could a twin-screen smartphone of this sort be used for? E Ink has a few ideas, though is leaving most of that to OEMs. An ereader app is the obvious choice, though you could also show a digital boarding pass for a plane (even if you had no battery life remaining on your phone to drive the regular screen), QR codes, or mapping directions. Alternatively, the panel could be used to show promotional information, such as vouchers for nearby stores, or even sponsored messages in return for free call, message and data credit.

E Ink couldn’t tell us which companies it has shown the idea to, and which have said they’d be interested, but did say that at least one was working on something. The first such device could hit the market by 2013 at the earliest.

Qualcomm’s augmented reality platform allows you to scan real world objects and create “interactive experiences” on your smartphone or tablet. The technology had its limitation though, only scanning photos against a local database of 80 images. Now Qualcomm has announced that by adding the cloud into the mix, so the platform can perform image recognition against over one million images.

That will make it much easier for developers and partners to use the platform, with American Apparal fully onboard with the program. The company demoed Vuforia at Uplinq 2012. The company has customized an app that would see customers scanning items on their smartphones to bring up the full details on the product, such as pricing and reviews. It would also lets customers buy products that they can’t find in the store.

American Apparel gave a little demo for us at the event, and everything seemed to work as advertised. The company says that what we saw was still a prototype, but that a full version “should be available soon.”

I think one of the best things to ever happen to console gaming on the Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 were game demos. I can’t tell you how many video games I have purchased over the years that just sucked. Few things are worse to a gamer than dropping money on a new game and finding out it’s not fun. Thankfully, you can grab the demo and never worry about that with many games today.

An update that Nintendo made available for the 3DS in December brought the ability for the portable device to get game demos of some new titles for players to check out ahead of buying. A couple of the first demos will land in the 3DS eShop tomorrow. The demos are of some popular titles too so you can try them out and go buy.

There are a couple of games out there right now that show off the graphics finesse of whatever platform you play them on quite well, and in quite an easily comparable sense when it comes down to it, those being Riptide GP, a jet-ski racing game, and ShadowGun, a 3rd person shooter – today we’ve got these games being demonstrated on Verizon’s LTE version of the Galaxy Nexus. This device is the first to work natively with Google’s mobile OS by the name of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and runs a Texas Instruments OMAP4 1.2GHz dual-core processor. Is it enough to compete with such gaming titans as the ultra-powerful NIVIDA Tegra 3 quad-core processor toting ASUS Transformer Prime, or perhaps the iPad 2 for good measure?

What you’re going to see below is a few videos, the first of which will be Riptide GP on the Galaxy Nexus, the second being ShadowGun on that same device, then you’ll be looking at a couple of videos that show off these same games on the two most powerful tablet devices on the market today. Though a tablet isn’t normally supposed to be compared to a handset like this in this manner, you’ll see that though tablets have been shown to be running the show as far as high-class graphics and gaming go thus far, here in the Galaxy Nexus its evident that the smartphone is right there racing beside them, no problem at all whatsoever.

Riptide GP on Verizon Galaxy Nexus

This game was originally developed in collaboration with NVIDIA to be optimized for NVIDIA Tegra 2 processors, dual-core like the Texas Instruments processor in the Galaxy Nexus, but currently being phased out as the Tegra 3 rolls out with twice the power. Meanwhile this game has been released for all devices powerful enough to work with it, and it looks fantastic here on the Galaxy Nexus. We have several things to thank for that including the high-level graphics processing in the Texas Instruments chip, the operating system Android 4.0′s ability to work with processors to deliver high-end graphics and processing more efficiently than ever before, and the high-resolution display on the Galaxy Nexus. This game is available on the Android Market now.

ShadowGun on Verizon Galaxy Nexus

Similarly you’ll find ShadowGun working slick as a knife through butter with absolutely no load time between scenes and instantaneous rendering of all elements as they unfold, no problem. This game demands that your device be running efficiently or it skips and jumps as your machine tries to handle it — you’ll see no such breaks here. This game, like Riptide GP, is available for download directly from the Android Market right this minute.

Riptide GP and ShadowGun on iPad 2 and Transformer Prime

Now as far as both of these games working in the tablet world, there’s more of a difference between the iPad 2 and the Transformer Prime than you’d think, and because the display is much more dense with pixels on the Galaxy Nexus than it is on the iPad 2, the difference between the two is pronounced heavily once again. First have a look at Riptide GP:

You’ll have noticed at this point that the game has some added effects on the ASUS tablet – this is because NVIDIA worked with the folks developing Riptide GP to create a version that takes full advantage of the four cores of the Tegra 3 processor. A similar situation is going on with ShadowGun, what with water effects, in this case, and improved graphics across the game. Compare this version to the one you see played by the Galaxy Nexus above and you’ll see that beyond those aesthetic bonuses, they run pretty similarly.

I think one of the bestselling video games this holiday season is going to be Need for Speed The Run. This is the latest installment in the NFS franchise that has been around for many years now. The game will be coming in time for Christmas giving and has some awesome cars in it. If you need a bit more convincing that his game is worth your money, the demo is coming.

EA has announced that the demo for the game will be coming on October 18. The demo will have the game’s Autolog feature to allow gamers to compete against each other in the demo. The game demo will have players screaming through the Desert Hills of California and independence Pass in Colorado. The game demo will have two of the many cars the full version offers.

In the demo, players will get to choose between the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S and the Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni. The Porsche will only be available if the player refers a friend to download the demo. If you want the demo you need to pay attention, apparently the demo is only going to be up for download form October 18 to November 1 in the US and October 19 to November 1 in Europe.

HTC’s upcoming Sense UI update to version 3.5 has been leaked in a demo video made available by XDA.cn. The five-minute long video shows the HTC Sense 3.5 running on what appears to be the female-focused HTC Bliss. The interface looks more simplified from the current version with new transitions and lock screens.

What’s noticeably gone is the three-button Sense launcher bar that normally sits at the bottom of the screen. In its place there is instead two separate dedicated buttons for an app drawer and phone. There appears to be a new method for adding and removing home screens while the widgets also look to have been tweaked.

Overall, the update isn’t a dramatic change from the current HTC Sense 3.0. The first handset expected to run HTC Sense 3.5 UI on top of Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread is the HTC Bliss, which is expected to launch in late September. Other upcoming devices to sport the new UI include the HTC Holiday and the HTC Vigor.

The massively epic story of Ezio, an Italian assassin whose story will be completed here in the third of three Assassin’s Creed video game, is today revealed in video form. What we get to see today is a game that starts with a chariot race and fight, the finale of which leaves Ezio busted and near death having has his cart thrown down the side of a mountain, his crash and climb up leaving him without the ability to free-run or turn walls to walkways. You’re playing a very similar game to the last Creed game, but you’re certainly not starting your journey as the assassin with a full deck of cards. The graphics and gameplay, on the other hand, are top notch. Enter the Director’s Cut of the Gamescon 2011 gameplay footage of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations.

And what’s new that you’re sure to get a kick out of is Ezios newfound ability to craft bombs. Ezio must find shells, gunpowder, and all manner of ingredients to to create bombs that have an array of different characteristics. You must also find crafting tables, these tablet strewn throughout the game of course, to craft bombs of many delights. At one point during the demo you even get to see Ezio’s ability to essentially plug a bomb into a dead body, lure in several enemies with the body and blow them to kingdom come as they get near enough to the scene. Brutal!

Of course you also have access to your blades as what assassin would be worth his snuff without the ability to sneak up on an opponent and jam a sharpened dagger into his neck? You’ll be using all manner of methods to get you to your goal, creativity needed on a whole new level to figure out this puzzle of a game due to your lowered physical abilities and “near dead” state. You’re in Constantinople during the Ottoman empire as well, so you’re not going to get a whole lot of help from your non-existent comrades.

On the other hand, there’s Altair, the protagonist from the first Assassin’s Creed. You’ll be put in the pro-assassin boots of Altair as well as able to see several rather interesting bits of Altair’s yet-unseen road to the Master classification. As the characters of this diverse yet simple set of story lines continue to unfold, so too do we grow all the more engrossed in their fates.

This game will be coming out on November 15th 2011 on Xbox 360, PS3, PC, and if we’re to trust the previous note from Nintendo, Wii U as well. Perhaps at a later date.

As you might already know, our man in the field Vincent was at PEPCOM last night checkin out all the fun electronics – but what was also there? Some sweet, undefeatable Gorilla Glass! This is the sort of glass the toughest devices with screens are apt to use – definitely not a low-grade situation. Gorilla Glass is made to last. Not to scratch, and definitely not to break. Over to the Gorilla Glass table last night and we were treated to a lovely demo by a nice man who let Vincent demo the glass by doing no less than attempting his hardest to break it. Fun!

First, we get to see a prototype hand-sized piece of Gorilla Glass where a there’s a bend in the glass.

Next, another piece with more of a dish shape (meaning there’s a dip in the middle) sizing in at around 4-inches.

Finally, another dish shaped piece with a hole cut in it I’d assume for a speaker.

Then the fun began. Vince gets to use sort of a metal stylus (looks like the handle of an Exacto Knife to me) to press down on several pieces of lower-grade glass, of course breaking them each in turn.

Finally, they reach the Gorilla Glass, a 1.1-mm thickness just like each of the pieces of glass before it. The man presenting the Glass does admit that some people at PEPCOM had been able to break the glass upon HEAVY pushing, so Vince does attempt to do so as well “for our readers” – like a boss. But alas, the glass does not give way. But I guess that’s also good news!

The representative for Gorilla Glass then goes into the technology behind the glass in a bit of detail. What Gorilla Glass is is an <strike>Alkalide Lumina Silicone glass – which essentially means it has sodium in it. The way the glass is made strong is that they put in a hot salt bath, which leaches out the sodium, which they then replace with Potassium. Potassium, being a bigger molecule than sodium, sets up a compressive layer on the surface when the glass cools. That compressive layer is what makes the glass damage resistant.</strike>*

*SCHOOLED: Take a look at this extended explanation of how Gorilla Glass works, courtesy of intrepid commenter Santosh:

“Alkalide lumina silicone” glass??? Please change that to Alkaline Alumino-Silicate glass. Just a brief note on alkali (or alkaline) ions – they consist of Lithium (Li), Sodium (Na), potassium (K), rubidium (Rb) and cesium (Cs), first group in periodic table. Alumino-silicate represent aluminum oxide (Al2O3) plus silicon dioxide or silica (SiO2) AND NOT “silicone”. Silicone is a separate class of materials which are silicon (Si) containing polymers. So, the short version is that the glass is (alkali alumino-silicate) Na2O-Al2O3-SiO2. The sodium (Na+) ion from the surface of the glass is “ion exchanged” with larger potassium ion (NOT potassium molecule – as suggested by Corning Glass expert – in fact, there is no such thing as “potassium molecule”). I hope this will help clarify the real chemistry (typically taught at any entry level materials science class). When you stuff the larger ion, the outer layer tries to expand, but the bulk of the glass does not, which exerts compressive stress on the surface. So when you try to put the tensile or biaxial stress on the surface, the compressive stress compensates/neutralizes the tensile or biaxial stress thus preventing crack formation. I hope this will make it a complete explanation.

All that make sense to you? Thank you Santosh for taking the time to go in-depth on this subject, we appreciate it to no end! It’s commenters like you that make this community great!

The Gorilla Glass rep then displays a very thin layer of Gorilla Glass employed on a giant television, noting how awesome it looks and how it’ll differentiate it from any other television with how thin and strong it is.

Finally, he shows off a panel of Gorilla Glass with a design behind it which he notes would be optimal for a laptop cover (either custom or straight out of the box) that could, again, differentiate whichever brand plans on using it.

Take a look at the video below and see the awesome strength of the gorilla.

Intel have rolled out plenty of mockups, conceptual art, non-functional prototypes and fancy slides over the past few months to show us what Moblin running on a Moorsetown-based MID might look like, but we’ve had to wait until IDF this past week to get a decent sighting of the platform in action. MID Moves sat down with an Inventec prototype running Moblin 2.1; you can see their hands-on video after the cut.

Video demo after the cut

The prototype device uses an custom interface developed by UI specialists Wind River, whom Intel acquired earlier this year. As for the device itself, that’s Inventec’s X3 “MediaPhone”, first shown at Computex 2009, and tipped for a release in mid-2010.

The whole thing looks surprisingly responsive, and if Intel’s claims about Moorestown pan out then it’ll not only be speedy but boast long battery life, too. More on Moblin 2.1 here.

Did you happen to make it into a select few Best Buy stores over the weekend? If so, did you get a chance to stare at/touch/play with a Zune HD? We certainly hope so. But! If you didn’t get that great of an opportunity, then it looks like a video might just have to cut it for now. And why is this video so amazing, other than giving you another look at the sexy piece of gadgetry? It shows off the Marketplace on the device, and then right there, smack-dab in the middle: Apps.

We’ve got job postings, and developers of competitive products saying they’re being enticed with money to come on over to Microsoft’s team, and finally XNA creators meant for the Zune that combine to tell us (and everyone else, we imagine) that Microsoft pans on being in the applications development bandwagon, and not simply for their Windows Mobile products. So, with help from third-party developers, it’s pretty safe to assume that Microsoft is setting up the new Zune HD as a legitimate iPod Touch competitor, and for most, the applications that Microsoft plans to have on that said device will really decide that impending war.

As for the video, we only get a sneak-peak. The store’s demo unit had its on board WiFi turned off, so we aren’t lucky enough to see any of the juicy details beyond that little App title, like if there’s any titles complete, or if anything even lies beyond that portal. Will there be any applications at launch? And if there are, will they be worth paying any attention to? Does Microsoft have something up its sleeve, ready to demolish all expectations when September 15th comes along? Or will the Zune HD just be another PMP released onto the market, caught up in the shadow of the technological marvel known as the iPod Touch? Check out the video and see for yourself, and start assuming ladies and gents.

First impressions are good, with the Mondi feeling well constructed and sturdy. As the 4.3-inch screen size might suggest it’s a compact device, though the protruding stand and camera sections on the back add up to a reasonable thickness. It’s definitely not a MID you could slot into your front trouser pocket, though of course you do get that full QWERTY keyboard to make up for it. The combination of shallow travel, a squared-off layout and a relatively small spacebar mean that the Mondi isn’t our first choice for text entry; it’s certainly quicker than pecking at an on-screen ‘board but you’re looking at speedy URL entry and occasional IM replies rather than anything more serious.

Samsung’s choice of Windows Mobile 6.1 is also a source of argument, and we’re not convinced that Microsoft’s aging platform is the best option for the MID. Add in doubts about the Mondi’s official Windows Mobile 6 upgrade eligibility – which we’re waiting on official comment regarding – and you could be looking at a handheld with plenty of potential but hampered by its OS. Still, Samsung’s TouchWiz UI overlay makes another reasonably successful appearance here, with easy to access widgets for controlling connectivity, frequently-used features and – no small thing when we’re talking about WM6.1 – visual gloss.

As for WiMAX we’re going to have to go sniffing out coverage, since CLEAR’s reach is still in its infancy. Happily there’s WiFi for the usual hotspot connectivity, while Bluetooth means you can tether up your cellphone and get online that way. We’ll have full feedback on the Samsung Mondi in our official review, but until then enjoy the hands-on demo video and gallery.

In the video, you can see how HTC have integrated their new Sense UI with Android, adding an extra bevy of widgets for the newly-enlarged homepage. That same UI will eventually end up on all HTC devices, we’re told, so even if you’re a devout Windows Mobile fanatic you’ll be wanting to see exactly what’s what.

In case you’ve not been keeping track of our sister site My Pre – and shame on you if that’s the case – you may have missed Palm’s latest official Pre demo video. After the first video’s run-through of the basic Pre calendar, email, internet and messaging functionality, this new piece – called “This Weekend” – showcases some of the freshly-announced apps: Fandango and Pandora.

Palm Pre video after the cut

While a movie app seems quite a straightforward prospect, Palm have gone a few steps further and integrated Fandango with webOS. You can obviously search for movies, check times at a local theater and then buy tickets, all on the Pre, but when you do it automatically adds an appointment entry for that movie into the smartphone’s calendar, and helps you to invite other people via email.

As for Pandora, meanwhile, there’s little change in the streaming music app’s functionality, but the Pre’s multi-tasking abilities come to the fore here. You can leave the Pandora “card” running in the background and go internet browsing, calendar searching and anything else, all with the music still playing. That’s something that’ll leave iPhone owners particularly jealous.

We grabbed some hands-on time with Samsung’s new UltraTOUCH flagship feature phone and the BEAT DJ music phone today, and there’s some seriously impressive AMOLED action going on in both devices. The UltraTOUCH S8300 looks pretty certain to be a hit in Europe, where it will go on sale as the Tocco Ultra Edition. TouchWiz may be on top of Samsung’s generic own-brand OS, but it’s reasonably responsive and the whole thing feels sturdy and solid in the hand, despite the slender dimensions.

The only real slow-down we observed was when dragging out a widget from the TouchWiz sidebar to the desktop, when the sidebar took a while to refresh back down. However this could be a side-effect of the internet-enabled widget attempting – and, since we were buried indoors and the UltraTOUCH lacks WiFi, failing - to grab a network connection. Generally, though the display was bright and richly color saturated, with excellent viewing angles. We’ll have to wait and see exactly how good the 8-megapixel camera is; we don’t hold out much hope for its dual-LED flash. It’s set to go on sale in March 2009, price and carriers yet to be announced.

Less successful, unfortunately, was the Samsung BEAT DJ. One half of the two BEAT Edition devices announced today, the music-centric device promises plenty with Bang & Olufsen ICEpower amplification and the same-sized 2.8-inch AMOLED touchscreen as the UltraTOUCH. However it’s let down by being strangely more unresponsive than the screen on the other handset, being stubborn to respond and slow to react when it does register a touch. That could be worked out in production firmware, certainly, but less convincing is the ethos of the device as a whole.

Samsung’s gimmick is that you can not only play tracks but tweak, filter and drop in samples on the fly. While that’s an interesting concept – and the Pacemaker has carved out its own niche doing something similar – it comes across as being pretty pointless. Samples sound cheesy, and there’s not enough granular control of any of the editing or filtering to make it a realistic standalone music device. It’s a shame, as the hardware and GUI are nicely designed, with the two circular “decks” crossing well between touchscreen and casing, and a dedicated DJ mode switch to boot you straight into the media player.

As for the Omnia HD, the handset Samsung had on hand today was a pre-production unit and refused to hold a charge; we’re hoping to stop by and check out a working model of the S60 smartphone tomorrow. As for the video of the handsets from today, we’re processing that and will add it in as soon as it’s done.

If you’re big into video games but not so much into simulations, you’ll probably love the newest PC game, Football Manager 2009. With a demo now available from Sports Interactive, you can take on the role of a soccer team manager.

This is the first time the game will be available in a 3D-rendered version. This is a definite step up for the developers of this game. You can play all sorts of big leagues in this game, including La Liga, MLS, Serie A and the Premier League.

You can even choose from 350,000 different players. This type of game is really meant for those that are committed to sports and have a love of soccer. If this doesn’t interest you, I probably wouldn’t recommend the demo. The game will be coming out on November 14th in Europe on both the PC and the Mac. You can watch a clip of the game below:

NVIDIA is demonstrating its latest efforts in interactive ray tracing at SIGGRAPH 2008, using four next-generation Quadro GPUs in an NVIDIA Quadro Plex 2100 D4 Visual Computing System to show linear scaling during rendering of a complex, two-million polygon, anti-aliased automotive styling application. The images here are taken from the demo, which managed 30fps 1920 x 1080 High Definition video for an image-based lighting paint shader, ray traced shadows, reflections and refractions.

In NVIDIA’s demo, rays are traced three times as they bounce through the scene. That number, though, is artificially capped by the company, and theoretically – with the GPU power to process it – could go even higher. Picture quality would therefore be a direct function of GPU power.

HotHardware speculates that the currently-available GeForce GTX 280, in a 3-way SLI configuration, could offer approximately 75-percent of the performance of this test system. They go on to predict that in perhaps 18 months high-end PCs could have the hardware to do real-time ray tracing, as in this demo, with fluid motion.

Intel’s xHCI is set to debut with USB 3.0 and will most likely appear at IDF in San Francisco next week. This puts to rest the idea that Intel would be withholding the specs for USB 3.0. xHCI “provides hardware component designers, system builders and device driver developers with a description of the hardware/software interface between system software and the host controller hardware for USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 (previous versions are not supported).”

All of this points to the notion that product development using USB 3.0 will soon be underway, making for up to ten times the bandwidth of its predecessor, USB 2.0. This means a maximum bandwidth of 600MB.

Word has it that NVIDIA has also “signed the USB 3.0 agreement” which points to good things for computer bandwidth in the near future.

Danger Planet is a Lost in Space type game. The main character in the game is Captain Jason Storm who has crashed on an alien planet and runs into variety of obstacles such as robots and monsters in his attempts to get off the island before he becomes a permanent resident.

The tech demo that was recently released shows “how the engine calculates infinite bounces of light in a dynamic environment in which any surface can reflect light, shadow light, and glow.”

One of the games I’m looking forward to the most this year is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Thankfully it seems that we’ll only need to wait until August to get our first real hands-on look at the title, as LucasArts recently announced that the demo will be coming next month.

What’s interesting about the demo is that they’ve decided to do things just a little differently than most demos. Rather than just sticking you in a level and abruptly ending it when you reach the end, they’re going to give you a little bit of a story. You will play through a reworked version of the Tie Fighter Construction Facility, and when you reach the end of the demo, you’ll be greeted with a special ending that won’t be found in the retail version of the game.

Sure, that’s not a huge deal, but I’m glad to see that LucasArts is taking that extra step with their demo. Look for the demo on both Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network sometime next month.

A somewhat similar model has been around for some time in the Sidekick messaging cellphone, where a constant link to a T-Mobile server maintains a backup of all device data as well as a constant connection to IM accounts. That way, even if the phone moves out of network coverage, conversations continue to be stored ready for when the Sidekick reconnects. Elsewhere, various companies have experimented with ways to speed up mobile browsing, using a server to crunch a requested webpage in real-time and send a compacted version to a handset.

Intel’s system, however, differs in that it would offer MID users the convenience of a faster, more capable processor while the MID itself could still be fitted with a power-efficient CPU (such as the company’s own Atom). In the Second Lifedemo, exploring the virtual world was controlled by the MID but rendered, in real-time, on a separate computer (which in practical implementations would be a server farm catering for multiple users). Intel did not disclose how much bandwidth was necessary to make the system usable, but it’s fair to assume that the upper ranges of 3G, WiFi or WiMAX would likely be required.

Of course, this isn’t all about mobile gaming; Intel’s concept would work for any processor-intensive application. The idea of using a remote server for its sheer grunt isn’t particularly new, but it’s only recently that wireless technologies (including WiMAX, which Intel has invested heavily in) have caught up to satisfy the amounts of data being transferred.

Last night I decided that I needed to pick up the new Indiana Jones Special Edition DVDs. Upon looking at the box I realized that the demo for the new Lego-themed game had been released. Naturally I popped in the DVD and fired it up to get some demo action.

Don’t let the box fool you, there’s no demo on the DVD. You’ll actually be directed to a download site (which is here). There you will download a 450MB file (it shouldn’t take long, and it’s well worth any wait that you might have) and once that is done, you can start playing.

The short bit of the game I was able to play was a blast. The gameplay mechanics were very similar to the Lego Star Wars games, but while the controls felt very familiar, I didn’t feel like I was just playing the same old game with new characters. They keep you rotating between characters by having them use special tools (shovel, wrench, etc) in specific areas.

The cutscenes look just as great as one would expect, and they have kept their sense of humor (which is almost required for a game like this). They even play homage to the Star Wars titles briefly towards the end of the demo. If you have a little bit of time to kill, definitely download this one.
