This week the folks at CyanogenMod, far and away the most popular 3rd party ROM development group, have revealed their first shot at ClockworkMod Recovery for Google Glass. This interface is one of the bare-bones first steps toward creating a slew of customized user interfaces for Google Glass, starting here with the Explorer Edition of the device. CyanogenMod developer Brint Kriebel (aka bekit) has been so kind as to provide us with some up-close photos of the software on his own Glass device, too.

Now before you get too pumped up about this situation, you should mind the fact that if you do unlock your Glass device, you’ll be voiding your warrantee provided by Google. This is the same for most devices on the market today running Android, so keep a weather eye when you’re hacking along.

What you’re seeing here is a screen rather similar to that which you’d see if you were working with ClockworkMod Recovery on an Android smartphone or tablet. Here with Glass, the user will be using the camera shutter to scroll through menus and the power button to select items inside Recovery – on a smartphone, this is done with a device’s volume buttons and power button.

Kriebel has tested several elements inside this version of Recovery, but notes that he’s not yet tested any installations – since none yet exist. Once developers begin to create odd packages for Glass and zip them up real nice, Recovery will be able to flash them to the device with a button tap.

I have successfully tested the following:
access via adb (including Koush’s new adb backup)
wipe data/factory reset
mount/unmount partitions
backup/restore
auto disable of stock recovery re-flash
auto root
- Kriebel (bekit)

Users wishing to work with this custom Recovery for Google Glass can head over to Brint Kriebel’s Google+ post to grab the link to the file image. If you’re feeling brave, let us know how it all goes – and if you’ve got any fabulous customized bits and pieces you’ve installed with Recovery, too!

This week the folks at famed hack CyanogenMod have pushed their customized Android system over to the T-Mobile variant of the Samsung GALAXY S 4. This comes after some controversy over the idea that the team would cease working with Samsung devices after finding difficulty with Samsung’s Exynos processor software and builds earlier this year. As the AT&T version of the software was shown to be working earlier this month, now so too do we see the T-Mobile variant active.

CyanogenMod 10.1 is the version being pushed to the newest Android devices on the block, this bringing a variant of Google’s Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean along with its software features such as Google Now. The CyanogenMod team of developers works to bring a customized system to devices that are rooted, this meaning they’re hacked and able to be modified by 3rd party systems. Android has been notoriously “hackable” since inception, this part of Google’s open source intentions with the mobile software.

The software included in the CyanogenMod build has been influential to many software builds since it first arrived on the scene several years ago, including Google’s own source build. CyanogenMod developers have also been incepted into hardware and software companies across the board in the past several years, their influence seen on devices of all types. Head CyanogenMod man Steve Kondik recently left a job at Samsung, continuing to pursue 3rd party work and the development of the ROM.

The Samsung GALAXY S 4 is either available at or is headed to each of the major mobile retailers in the United States and is making its spread abroad here in the Spring of 2013. This device joins the Samsung Galaxy Note II and the rest of the Samsung Galaxy Tab tablets family as the brand continues to strengthen with a common “nature” theme in both hardware and software – curved edges have served Samsung well enough that the wave will move forward through the year to the next release as well, without a doubt. Expect the Samsung Galaxy Note III sooner than later!

As the Samsung GALAXY S 4 sees its first public bootloader unlock today, so too does it see the final confirmation that earlier reports that famed hack CyanogenMod would not be coming to the handset. In a push to inform the masses that the smartphone would indeed be supported by the hacker team, head developer Steve “Cyanogen” Kondik revealed to Google+ the screenshot you see below, saying how lovely it was to be running. It’s not clear at the moment if all versions of the GALAXY S 4 will be supported.

The version of the Samsung GALAXY S 4 you’re seeing here hacked and modded with CyanogenMod is from T-Mobile. The AT&T iteration of the phone was the one seen with an unlocked bootloader earlier today. While one modification is certainly done at a different difficulty level than the other, users can assume that one will be compatible with the other relatively soon.

The original note on the subject of CyanogenMod not working with the GALAXY S 4 seems to have come from a developer who was ill-informed. As it stands, the CyanogenMod team will be bringing the most popular ROM in the world to smartphones using Samsung’s Exynos processor for some time to come, the same being true of those working with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors as well.

The CyanogenMod rom continues to grow in popularity here through 2013 as it reaches version 10.1, this including Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and additional modifications unavailable to the basic build of Google’s mobile operating system. This modification is available to any Android owner whose device is supported and whose willing to unlock their device without fear of being kicked from customer support at their local carrier. Know what you’re getting into before you move forth!

Cyanogenmod is implementing a new feature for its future releases that will allow you to control the camera on your Android device without needing to use your hands. With the new feature, you can set a timer for your Android device to take a snapshot, or you can say one of three trigger words (whiskey, cheese, or cid) to command your camera to take a picture.

The new hands-free feature will be available from this point onward for future Cyanogenmod 10.1 releases, beginning with the group’s nightly releases. To enable this feature, all you need to do is head to your camera settings and enable the “persistent hands-free” option. Afterwards, you can adjust the handsfree settings by tapping the “Cid” head on the top left corner of your device to adjust how you want to take your hands-free pictures.

In the video above, the new feature is demonstrated using two different trigger words: Cheese, and Cid. But in order to use the trigger word command, it looks like you need to access the voice command feature in the quick settings first. Nonetheless, it’s still a nifty feature to have. For the timer settings, you can choose to set a a 10-second delay upwards to a 60-second delay before your camera takes a picture.

As our friends at Android Community have noted, the timer settings aren’t persistent, meaning you will have to adjust it everytime you want to use it. It make sense because you won’t always have to delay your snapshots. This new feature should make taking group/family portraits much easier, and it also helps make Android cameras a more convenient alternative to a stand-alone digital camera.

On April Fools’ Day, the folks behind the popular Android ROM CyanogenMod updated its CM Stats feature and removed the opt-out option for users, which wasn’t an April Fools’ joke. CM Stats collects a few details about users’ devices, but with the opt-out feature removed, a handful of CyanogenMod users have complained. A day later, though, and the dev team restored the feature.

Steve Kondik, one of the dev team members of CyanogenMod and the guy who recently quit Samsung, announced via Google+ that the opt-out features has been restored, and users can now have the option to not send device information to CyanogenMod. This information includes either the device’s anonymized/hashed IMEI or WiFi MAC address, device name, the version of CyanogenMod, country, and carrier.

However, it seems Kondik was a bit upset when he announced the reversal, saying that “it’s incredibly frustrating that a handful of incredibly vocal users are ready to “fork” over the issue. News flash: there are already a hundred forks of CM.” He continued by assuring CM users that “there’s no sinister plot to crack the hashed data and sell your deepest darkest secrets to Verizon and the NSA.”

Kondik said that the removal of the opt-out features was “well-intentioned,” and the initial announcement of the removal of opt-out notes that the information is already collected by Google and most apps in the Google Play store, so CM certainly isn’t the first to ask for this type of device information.

Back in August 2011, CyanogenMod founder Steve Kondik was hired by Samsung due to the man’s expertise of the Android platform and its customization powers. However, after only a year-and-a-half on the job, Kondik has decided to leave the company, but not before sharing some thoughts on Samsung’s new GALAXY S 4. His words were mostly praises, but he created a little thunder when talking about the company’s TouchWiz user interface.

Kondik posted his thoughts of the GALAXY S 4 on his Google+ page, and he mostly praised the device, saying that while there was “no refresh of the industrial design other than a few minor things such as the edging…the device actually feels quite a bit more solid than the [Galaxy S III].” Kondik also noted that the new device “blows the competition out of the water” as far as specs are concerned.

However, his thoughts on Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface weren’t as praising. Kondik said that TouchWiz has become more polished with the latest version on the GALAXY S 4, but he says that “it feels like it has been sent a few years back in time to the Froyo days.” As for the UI’s performance, Kondik says “it’s better and worse at the same time, depending on your viewpoint I suppose.”

Kondik’s Google+ post was merely just a quick review of the new device from his viewpoint, ending with the recommendation that most Galaxy S III users don’t really need to bother updating to the GALAXY S 4 right away, but it is a substantial upgrade from the Galaxy S II. Kondik left Samsung on good terms, however, and says that he has plans lined up for the foreseeable future.

In a surprising announcement by the CyanogenMod dev team, they have announced that they won’t be developing for the Samsung GALAXY S 4, or at least there’s no plans currently to support the new device. Team Hacksung member XpLoDWilD says that “nobody at team hacksung…plans to buy it, neither develop for it.” Team Hacksung is the group behind the official CM ports.

The dev team mostly blames the different variants of the new device, one being the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 version in the US, and the international version which will rock out an 8-core Exynos 5 chip. They also note that many of the bugs present on the Galaxy S III will most likely be there on the GALAXY S 4 as well, most notably issues with camera support.

UPDATE: Steve “Cyanogen” Kondik himself has debunked this claim himself.

There’s also the issue with Samsung locking down their platform tightly. Samsung wants to protect their IP, which obviously makes for very developer-unfriendly devices. Of course, the company works around carriers and such, but they haven’t been too friendly toward independent developers as of late.

Of course, there will mostly likely be other ROMs available for the GALAXY S 4, and while other developers are following in the footsteps of the CyanogenMod dev team’s decision to pass on the new device, there will still be some developers who want a stock version bad enough that they’ll be willing to jump through the necessary hoops to make it happen.

If you just bought one of those fancy new Nexus 10 tablets and are looking to get just a little more out of the device, CyanogenMod 10.1 nightly builds are ready for download, right on the heels of the same nightly builds for the Nexus 4, which came out a few days ago. If you’re wanting to get into some high-resolution hacking, now is your first chance.

While the Nexus 10 already has Android 4.2 Jelly Bean on board, the CyanogenMod 10.1 nightlies (based on 4.2 as well), will provide Nexus 10 owners a chance to see what third-party developers have planned for the new tablet. Obviously, these nightly builds are in their alpha stages, so you should expect them to be a little buggy and unstable.

Of course, before installing these CyanogenMod builds, you’ll need some know-how on rooting, flashing, etc., so if you feel the least bit uncomfortable performing such tasks, it’s probably best you leave your Nexus 10 untouched, especially since the smallest mistake could end up bricking your device.

We’re not sure when stable builds will be available for the Nexus 10 (or the Nexus 4 for that matter), but it should only be a matter of time after seeing these nightly builds being posted up. We honestly can’t wait to see what the hacking community will do with the high-resolution display of the Nexus 10. Hopefully we’ll see something good soon.

CyanogenMod 10, the latest CyanogenMod ROM version that’s based in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, is being rolled out to a handful of devices today. Version 10 has seen tons of nightly and beta builds for the past several months, but finally stable builds are being released for a selection of Android devices.

The CyanogenMod 10 stable ROM is now available to download for the Samsung Galaxy S II, LG Optimus Black, and the Samsung Galaxy S III. It’s also available for the Galaxy Nexus, the Nexus 7 tablet, and even the HTC EVO 4G. The average file size for the ROM is between 150-160MB and they’re available now the CM website.

Some of the new features available in CyanogenMod 10 include an “expandable desktop” mode, a built-in root-enabled file manager, as well as support for new devices. If you don’t see a stable build for your device, you’ll have to hang tight, as they’re still rolling out stable builds. However, some builds have been failing for users, so you may even want to wait a little while until the issues get resolved.

If you have a rooted Android device and haven’t yet tried out a CyanogenMod ROM, we highly suggest doing so. The ROM gives you the vanilla Android experience with a ton of exclusive features and settings that you can play around with. So, if you’re wanting a bit more out of your Android UI, CyanogenMod is a great option.

Welcome to Thursday folks, just one more work day before arriving at the weekend. Today we had next to nothing about the Apple vs. Samsung trial, except for the news that a similar South Korean trial has been frozen for fear of it becoming too similar to the one being held here in the US. The lack of Apple vs. Samsung news leaves room for far more interesting things, however, like space! The Curiosity rover sent back a color panoramic shot of the surface of Mars along with its first full resolution image, and it’s a pretty awesome sight. Sadly, it wasn’t all exciting news for NASA today, as the Morpheus moon lander failed during a flight test and exploded into flames. Luckily no one was hurt, but this is still a pretty big setback for the folks at NASA.

OUYA’s Kickstarter campaign wrapped up early this morning, and if you missed your chance to pledge, you’ll be pleased to know that the Android-based console is available for pre-order starting today. Google was hit with the largest FTC fine in history today over its breach of Apple’s Safari browser, and we tell you why Google’s new Gmail Search feature won’t result in your more private emails being shown to everyone in view of your computer screen. The Google Translate app for Android added image translation functionality today, and the makers of Cyanogenmod 9 have officially released the stable version for the Galaxy Nexus.

Apple Stores will now price match on the iPhone 4 and all models of the iPhone 4S, and a new Microsoft job listing seems to suggest that the next Xbox will be arriving within the next 18 months. The ASUS Transformer Pad TF300TL may be launching with 4G LTE capabilities in Germany and Austria within the month, Samsung has unsurprisingly denied any interest in acquiring RIM once again, and the Sony Xperia tablet suffered yet another leak today. Finally, the international community is considering outlawing cyber-attacks in times of war, the Nikon 1 J2 camera became official (and subsequently became available for pre-order), and HTC may be announcing a Windows Phone 8 device next month, so keep an eye out for more news on that.

As is typically the case, we’ve also got a handful of original articles for you to peruse this evening, with Chris Davies examining the problems with Windows 8 tablets, and providing a warning to those who think that they’re actually purchasing a product when they pledge money to a Kickstarter. Chris Burns has a review of the new Samsung Galaxy Beam, and he also goes hands-on with Google’s official Nexus 7 cover, so be sure to have a look at those. Enjoy the rest of your evening, everyone!

If you’re part of the ever-growing developer and hacker culture that exists in the Android universe, you may well have heard of the most popular software build made by a 3rd party group: CyanogenMod. This group of developers creates a ROM that you run on your smartphone or tablet, it completely replacing what you’d had before with their own vision for a superior bit of mobile computing. Today the group has announced that the first “Stable” release for their newest version, CyanogenMod 9, is available for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

You’ll be working with a modified version of Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich here, which, if you’ve already got Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, you might want to skip. The reason you would want to pick this build of Android is that the developers behind the magic have added a relatively large amount of fun tweaks and optimizations, here making the Galaxy Nexus faster and – depending on your taste for such things – more beautiful.

Inside CyanogenMod 9 you’ll get all of the great add-ons that came with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the first place like a modified notifications pull-down and easy access to your recently used apps. You’ll also get Cyanogen-added features such as a DSP equalizer and their own music player app “Apollo.” This release, it should be noted, is made for the “maguro” version, GSM that is, of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. If you don’t know what that means, you probably shouldn’t be working with CyanogenMod.

If you’re looking for an optimized Jelly Bean experience, you can also get into the development process with the team by downloading nightly test builds. There will certainly be bugs and you’ll want to report all messy bits back to the team for faster pushes to the final product. You can grab CyanogenMod 10 (early builds) as well as CyanogenMod 9 (stable build) right now if you wish – and let us know how it goes!

Well folks, the end of Thursday is nearly upon us, which means we’ll be kicking off the weekend soon. Today brought quite a bit more news about the Apple vs. Samsung trial than yesterday did, with Samsung’s lawyer fighting back against allegations made by Apple’s counsel. Things aren’t looking too good for Samsung though, as it appears that Judge Lucy Koh has thrown out quite a bit of the company’s evidence, and now Apple is requesting sanctions that uphold its patents based on yesterday’s evidence leak. The upside to all of this, however, is that we got another peek at an early iPhone prototype today, so be sure to check that one out.

Use of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is on the rise, while some XDA developers have discovered that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has at least partially implemented support for multiple user accounts. Speaking of Android, the CyanogenMod team announced today that they will be dropping support for the Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 with CyanogenMod 9, so you S1 users may want to start looking for a different custom ROM. Samsung started sending out invites today for its “Pushing Boundaries” press conference at the end of the month, and we have a feeling that a new Galaxy Note device will be revealed there.

Sadly, we’ve got some bad news about Nokia, as new reports say that it has shuttered its Qt offices in Australia and laid off staff. SHIELD, a new bill that has been introduced in the US House of Representatives, looks to stop patent trolls in their tracks, and it turns out that around 83 million of Facebook’s users are fake profiles. With Facebook quickly approaching the 1 billion user mark, this means that about 9% of the profiles on the site are fake. AT&T announced its planned acquisition of NextWave Wireless today, a purchase which should help it boost its 4G LTE service.

Astronomers have taken a very clear picture of a spiral galaxy that has produced two supernovas in the past 30 years, so be sure to have a look at that one. Apparently Prometheus 2 is a thing now (raise your hand if you knew that was coming), and we talk to the director of Total Recall about a certain strange-looking dollar bill that appears in the movie. As far as video games go, today Gameloft began teasing its first game made with the Unreal engine, and we tried our best to guess what it is. Assassin’s Creed III got a new trailer today, but this particular trailer takes a closer look at what players can expect with Ubisoft’s new AnvilNext engine. Needless to say, it looks very… snowy.

That’s about it for the news, but there are also a couple reviews we suggest you check out. First up is Vincent Nguyen with a review of the 2013 Cadillac ATS, and Chris Burns has a review of Total Recall. Is Colin Farrell a good replacement for Arnold Schwarzenegger? You’ll just have to read the review to find out. Enjoy the rest of your Thursday evening everyone!

Those of you familiar with the most famous Android ROM in existence will be less than thrilled to hear news of their first big cut-off of legacy devices with the Qualcomm Snapdragon S1. This chipset will not be supported by the hacker developer ranks of CyanogenMod’s team starting with CyanogenMod 9. This version of the software is based on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich while CyanogenMod 10, based on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, has not yet been announced with limits.

The CyanogeMod team have been very clear on why they’re ready to cut off the chipset made by Qualcomm, starting with its internal memory. With the chipset known as S1, working out CyanogenMod 9 would have required a full repartitioning of internal memory. As the announcement made this week reads, this “would have required compromises in the CyanogenMod code that we are not willing to make.”

“The pieces just aren’t there”, they’ve announced, noting that though the capability is there for ICS and/or Jellybean ROMs to run on these devices, they simply do not feel the experience is worth all the work. Have a peek at some extended comments from the team here and let us know if you agree with their newest move.

“To measure our releases, we use the same subjective criteria as users do: “speed”, “jank”, “butter”, but also factor in user experience (UX) and other intangibles. However, beyond this is something that we can (and do) use as a ‘pass or fail’ mechanism, the Android Compatibility Test Suite. The CTS is used by device manufacturers to ensure that their changes to Android source do not break Android API, platform and other standards. This, in turn, brings stability to the Play Store for app developers. Breaking CTS would lead to a bad and inconsistent experience for app devs, which in turn would lead to a bad experience for you guys as users. If CyanogenMod was perceived to be blatantly violating CTS, developers could eventually blacklist CyanogenMod users from using their apps (or worse, Google could blacklist CyanogenMod from the Play Store altogether). No one would win by going down that path.” – CyanogenMod Developers

For those of you wondering, the model names of devices that are affected by this cut-off are as follows, per the CyanogenMod team: “blade, bravo, bravoc, buzz, c660, click, cooper, desirec, e510, e720, es209ra, espresso, hero, heroc, inc, legend, liberty, morrisson, motus, one, p500, passion, robym, s5670, supersonic, tass, u8150, u8220, z71, zero.”

Check out the timeline below to get additional insight on CyanogenMod and stick around as we follow the development of version 9 and 10 into the future!

The team behind CyanogenMod have just opened the doors for Samsung Galaxy S III users to test our their newest software build in “nightly” mode this week. The software known as CyanogenMod 9 is by far the most popular 3rd party “unofficial” build of Android on the web, and now that it’s hit the Samsung Galaxy S III in what’s essentially the equivalent of a Beta mode, it’s about to get a whole lot more popular once again. This software will bring you much closer to a vanilla version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich than Samsung‘s own TouchWiz UI allows, this being one of the main draws for all CyanogenMod-laden devices on the market today.

This software is currently being released in “nightlies” – this being downloads that have been worked on each night (and each day, incidentally) and released for download by intrepid early-build users and software testers across the web. This process allows the makers of CyanogenMod to get beta test reports quickly, easily, and en masse while software developers out in the “real” world must either do said testing themselves or pay for such a convenient situation. Of course there’s always the chance that a tester from the public will spill the beans, but with CyanogenMod there’s no worry: it’s already free to download and sharing is the name of the game!

So head on over to XDA-Developers and make sure you’re not squeamish: this is indeed a piece of a hacking puzzle, so plenty could potentially go wrong. This software is not guaranteed in any way not to wreck your hardware, but if you do take the risk, your rewards with a lovely bit of user interface made by magicians will be well worth it. Have a peek at our full review of the Samsung Galaxy S III in its international edition, then stick around as we eventually get our hands on the USA-carried Galaxy S III models as well!

The hacked and completely fan-made Android-based ROM known as CyanogenMod has reached a massive 2 million installs this week, reminding us that it is far and away the most successful Android 3rd party system of all time. This update comes only a few months after CyanogenMod reached 1 million installs, the Google mobile OS-based hack growing now as what appears to be an exponential rate. The install rate is tracked by the CyanogenMod team’s own CM stat tracker which shows also that the last 24 hours have had an additional 11,294 installs as well.

The giant upswing in installs here comes quite obviously in the span of time which includes the release of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. CyanogenMod takes whatever the most recent Android system is and tweaks it to what the team sees as perfect, porting it then to masses of Android devices, one after the other. This system ends up putting the newest version of Android on hacked phones quite a bit faster than mobile carriers and manufacturers are able, this drawing in the fans in droves.

CyanogenMod is currently on version 9, this version having a fully functional Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich build as its base. The team has a rabid following including a community that gladly helps them test out early builds of the software well before it’s complete, this speeding up the process between initiation and final product at least twofold.

This year it does remain possible that Android 5.0 Jellybean will be released at Google I/O or beyond, at which time the CyanogenMod team will release a new version of CyanogenMod once again. One way or another, we’ll see 3 million installs by the end of 2012 without a doubt.

You won’t see this sentence very often: CyanogenMod is asking for money. As you may well know, the Android community uses the modification to Android known as CyanogenMod more than any other custom ROM, hands down. And today they’re asking that you help them out with their otherwise free service by donating some cash to help support the purchase of “a couple of solid, stable Xeon-class servers with large amounts of RAM and fast disks.” They’re currently using PayPal, which is unfortunate for the apparent mobs of users boycotting the service at the moment (there’s a lot of overlap with the modding community) but you’ve got other options as well.

What CyanogenMod will use these servers for is compiling nightly builds of their software so that community members around the globe can help test and work to improve said software, and up until very recently, they already had what they needed. Unfortunately and for reasons the team has declined to discuss, they’ve lost access to the cluster they had in the past. Nearly the entire earth uses CyanogenMod at the moment, and even a couple bucks will help the team out and allow nightly builds to continue to be pushed.

The alternative to having donations in this manner (through their PayPal link at the bottom of the page) is charging cash for each build each time a build is released. It also appears that at least one fellow by the name of Bloch is contributing in an alternate manner: “I’m the MD of Bytemark Hosting in the UK, and noticed that you’d asked for donations for a CyanogenMod build farm. We have a few machines that would meet your requirements (or can easily upgrade a couple) and increasing numbers of our staff think it is a very cool project.” So get ready for some speed once again from the team!

The same fellow that brought you and continues to bring you the most famous ROM handler on the hacked Android circuit ROM Manager, Koushik Dutta, aka Koush, has been developing an app store for the relatively small number of banned Android apps out in the wild today. Included in this sort of rogue appstore will be not only gaming emulators that’ve been tossed from the official market, but Visual Voicemail apps, one-click rooting apps, and other such gems that have otherwise found themselves on the short end of the banning stick ala Google. Full fledged ROMs will MAYBE be included in this app store as well, and should it take off, a full collection of flash-ready modifications for your already hacked Android device.

For there is a large population of modification-loving Android citizens out there today, Koush right there in the midst of them, working to bring the most complicated situations down to a couple of taps and the doors open to the public. What you’ll be able to do with this new app store, you hackers you, is download software the same way you’ve been able to thus far from the official app market, but the content will be closer to that which you’ve been downloading from the forums. In this way, the whole situation will be made that much easier for all on-the-go developers.

This app store will appear, if it works out, in future builds of CyanogenMod, and will be pulling tiny bits of profit out of apps that are sold on the new market. All the funds will then go to the CyanongenMod project. Koush has spoken specifically about “one click root apps, emulators, tether apps, Visual Voicemail apps, and more” and we expect the project to move to a real live product somewhere inside 2012, but not anytime soon!

“We are well on our way in terms of progress” the team says, and “hope to give you something to play with soon.” Right now there are only two main outstanding issues to overcome: the camera doesn’t work, and video playback isn’t supported. Work on the latter is apparently ongoing.

That still means there’s plenty to see today, including Angry Birds and some smooth animated fish rendering. Connectivity – WiFi and Bluetooth – are both supported and functional, but the CM team still isn’t giving a fixed estimate on when TouchPad owners might be able to actually download the new ROM.

Even though the bulk of the population out here in Android Land aren’t yet updated to the newest version of Google’s Mobile OS, modifications on the basic user interface of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich are in full force, shown here with the CyanogenMod team’s Trebuchet launcher, made to make your experience as lovely as possible. What you’re seeing is a hacked version of the newest version of Android made perfect as the developer / hacker team CyanogenMod sees it. They’ve got their newest version, CyanogenMod 9, under development now, and inside you’ll find this new look at Ice Cream Sandwich complete with improved widget resizing, auto-rotate, home screen modification, and a whole lot more!

This build is only in pre-alpha mode at the moment, this meaning that if you’re going to use it, you’ll certainly be a part of the tester group working to improve it for a full release. At the moment, Trebuchet only works on hacked devices running Android 4.0.3 ICS, and even then you’ve got to have the skills to tap into the full features to make use of it. Eventually we’ll certainly find that this launcher not only looks lovely beyond the original Ice Cream Sandwich, but that its functionality eclipses that of the original Google build.

Meanwhile get pumped up for it as we reflect back on the past year of Android hacks, developments, and modifications of all kinds with our 2011 retrospective on developers specifically for Google’s mobile operating system. Notice how even something in such an early build as this is reported as major news as so many Android fans are in love with the CyanogenMod crew. Stay tuned through 2012 for the final build here and in so many more places on top of Ice Cream Sandwich, Gingerbread, and the rest.

When we look back at this year, we’ll think of it as the year of the birth of the dual-core mobile super chip, the double CPU processor becoming the status quo for a smartphone or tablet running Android, this the single most important thing to those who use the devices as tiny computers while the term “4G” dominates the memories of the masses, but it’s developers that mattered most. There’s no thinking about Android this year without recognizing that it’s still running alongside Apple’s iOS, the iPhone, and the iPad 2 as its primary competitors, and as its own user interface changes drastically, its competitors instead tweak functionality inside their already set-in-stone aesthetic. Then there’s the battles between manufacturers, carriers, and Android versions too, but none of this existed outside the underground of hackers, developers, and tweakers galore!

The masses switched their Android versions from Froyo to Gingerbread on the whole, and by the end of the year we had Ice Cream Sandwich. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus was the hero device for the Android version near the end of the year and the Gingerbread hero, Samsung’s Nexus S, got the update soon after. Because of the massive hacker and developer communities in the wild working with Android at the moment, Ice Cream Sandwich is quickly being distributed to those brave enough to unlock their devices (breaking warranty in the process) for custom modification.

Hacking is not just a passing fad for Android devices, it’s a massive subculture. Here on SlashGear we end up writing about hacking-related stories for Android as often as we do about Apple patent applications. It’s a strange comparison to make, but there it is: as iOS fans ears poke up at the sound of a new product innovation from Apple, so too does the Android community listen in when news of a new version of CyanogenMod is released. CyanogenMod is a ROM made by the biggest community of developers working on a single project in the wild – ask anybody. What they do is take the most recent version of Android and perfect it with a hand-picked selection of modifications.

Between Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich, you should know, the modifications made by Google have been extremely indicative of how well they’re listening to the developer community at large. Developers and hackers have been hired on by groups like Samsung and Apple this year to bring the unmitigated brilliance flowing forth from their fingers to bring the heat to their real live products. What we’ve learned this year, above all else, is that there’s such an awesomely excitable developer base for Android out there today that they affect the decision making of every person in power from the bottom to the top.

But don’t get it twisted: the carriers still hold the reigns here in the United States. Everything from Verizon keeping Motorola devices locked down from development to Sprint releasing the most horribly mouth-packing name for a device in the history of smartphones, it’s all the carrier’s fault. There’s good reason for every bad decision, of course, and manufacturers are certainly not without blame for biffs, but mistakes have been made inside these past 12 months.

Android remains strong though, and masterpieces have been released as well, all of them open for development by the masses to the max. I’m currently still loving the AT&T Galaxy S II from Samsung running things like Ice Cream Sandwich alpha, the LG Optimus 2X (aka T-Mobile G2x) still has my favorite form factor in the history of Android, and ASUS is currently in the process of releasing the Transformer Prime, a tablet with a keyboard dock, processor, and display that make the iPad 2 look as old as it really is. There’s sure to be no break between the years here in the winter season leading into 2012 for hackers, ICS on the tips of everyone’s tongues, and the year ahead will be no less than spectacular for developers and adventurous consumers alike.

Stay tuned to SlashGear for the rest of our glances back at 2011 and of course, stick around for the next twelve months which will begin with a bang at CES 2012!

If you’re unaware of the the term CyanogenMod 9, you’ll be more than a little bit surprised that the most well-trafficked hack for Android will be bringing Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to a whole barrage of smartphones in the first month of 2012. What the team at CyanogenMod do is manufacture and develop a ROM, essentially the clothing and innards of in this case an Android device, allowing users who are daring enough to hack their smartphones or tablets to add their customizations for free. What they’ve done is to create not some flashy wild interpretation of Android that’ll blow your socks off, no, instead they’ve taken Android and tweaked it to a more perfect state – and come January 2012, we’re going to be tasting Ice Cream Sandwich.

The significance of this situation is that because the source code for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was released this week, Cyanogen and crew will be able to release a working version of the operating system before many manufacturers are able to ship out phones with the OS. While the Galaxy Nexus, Google and Samsung’s hero phone made to play host to the most basic version of Ice Cream Sandwich, will undoubtedly be the first device to have the operating system on it and will certainly be the first to have the OS in stores, CyanogenMod 9 is the key for thousands of ravenous Android fans to get a taste of the next Google treat as early as possible outside a Nexus device.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on Galaxy Nexus hands-on

It’s not yet known what devices will be able to run CyanogenMod 9 and therefor Ice Cream Sandwich right off the bat, but we anticipate a whole slew given recent releases of 7, aka Gingerbread, which saw wide releases recently. Hundreds of Twitter followers of the head fellow, Steve Kondik, aka Cyanogen himself, have already re-tweeted the simple message he left early this morning “..and we’re off. check back in 2 months :) #cm9 #ics” this signaling the obvious: this release is gonna be big.

If there’s a king of Android ROMs, aka complete replacement of the visible workings of a mobile device in this case, it’s CyanogenMod. For those of you that do not know, CyanogenMod is used by thousands of Android users across the earth, it being the most used Android ROM by far, and today the developers behind the project have announced that it’s been upgraded to version 7.1. This version continues to closely replicate Android 2.3 Gingerbread, now with a new laundry list of feature updates as well as a short list of new devices it will work with, including, yes indeed, the HP TouchPad we’ve been waiting so long to modify.

This newest version of CyanogenMod now supports nearly 70 devices with more on the way. Newest entrants into the world of Cyan including such gems as the HTC Desire S, the HTC Incredible S, Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Galaxy S II, T-Mobile G2X by LG, Motorola Cliq, and the entire line of Sony Ericsson XPERIA devices. The entire line of Sony Ericsson XPERIA devices have been added thanks to the FreeXperia and the newly supportive Sony Ericsson crew, having just pledged their involvement in the modification of XPERIA devices through the future.

This newest version of CyanogenMod includes enhanced Bluetooth support for mice as well as tethering, app launching gestures, brand new lock screen widgets, a completely rewritten LED notification system, and device-specific modifications galore. Then there’s a built-in screenshot function which we’ve been hoping for since the birth of Android itself as well.

Devices currently in the BETA ROM, coming up quick, include the HP TouchPad, HTC Sensation, Vision, and the LG Optimus 3D. Gold releases for each of these devices should be starting in a few weeks according to the Cyan crew, while Gold versions (aka basically final releases) are available right now from CyanogenMod via your regular outlets. Will you mod?

You’ve heard the rumors – the sold-out WebOS HP TouchPad tablet, now running Android! But did you know that you can make such a thing happen for yourself? Truly, the process has become as simple as it might ever get, courtesy of those lovely developer hackers on XDA Developers Forum. The great thing about the process we’re reporting here today is that you can keep your original WebOS mobile operating system in-tact while you allow access for yourself to Android, a much more diverse operating system at this point, this therefor giving you the $100 dual-core tablet you’ve always wanted, no holds barred!

For those of you wanting to get in on the process for installing this system, head over to the original XDA thread where it’s all going down, but know this: it IS an Alpha release, which means there certainly are bugs. In addition, you’ll need the community-authored tool “Preware” as well as an alternate app store (Android Marketplace isn’t here quite yet) and a set of other tools and tweaks to keep running. Limits currently include basically no usable storage, no Google apps, and – oh yeah – it’s in Chinese.

Preware, for those of you that don’t know, is an easy install that can be deleted after you’re done with it, this allowing you to work with the innards of your WebOS device, in this case your HP TouchPad. The developers behind this particular install of Android say that they’ll be continuing their work on the system and will be “ironing out” kinks for future releases, as well as flipping the whole thing so that Android can run as a “card” in your WebOS interface. Sound nice to you? Go ahead and hack now if you want, or wait a few weeks and the whole process should be made quite a bit easier – whichever you choose!

Also check out this alternate means of dual-booting Android and WebOS from just a couple of days ago – everyone wants both!

HP’s $100 fire sale of the TouchPad led to the webOS slate dropping into the hands of several developers, not least the CyanogenMod team, and they’ve been hard at work getting their customized version of Android running on the tablet. Already there’s a video demo (which you can see after the cut) of Android booting on the TouchPad, and the team says it’s hoping to release a multiboot ROM which will allow the users to choose between webOS, CyanogenMod and potentially other platforms too.

That would mean you could keep the slick webOS interface for use with your existing TouchPad apps – or indeed the Facebook app, which is better than what you get on Android – but then flip over to Google’s platform for the greater choice of software. The video shows what the team claims is a slightly older version of their current efforts; since then they’ve apparently added in lvm support and various other tablet-tweaks.

Outstanding, however, is the touchscreen driver, without which actually using the TouchPad as an Android tablet is somewhat less fulfilling. That’s now “the focus” of the team’s attention, though they also need some spare TouchPad units since the sell-out success of HP’s drastic discounting means there are developers wanting to contribute but unable to as they don’t have the actual tablet.

“It will certainly be a long while before our goals become reality” CyanogenMod warns, and so we probably shouldn’t expect anything too quickly. It’s also worth noting that, currently, the ROM they’re using is Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, not Honeycomb. Still, if you managed to grab a $100 TouchPad, this could end up being a great way of repurposing it.

Hardware company Samsung today has been revealed to have acquired one of the single most notorious names in Android modification, that being Steve Kondik, aka “Cyanogen” of CyanogenMod 7. For those whose life in the after-hours of their day is hacking and pushing their Android devices to the limits, this news has the potential to be much bigger than Google’s early morning acquisition of Motorola. How exactly this will affect how Samsung will operate is not yet known – the next most important question, about what’s going to happen to CyanogenMod now that Cyanogen himself is working for Samsung, we’ve got a bit more insight on that side of the situation.

It was earlier today that Kondik changed his mostly-private Facebook page’s employment to Samsung Mobile Software Engineer. Of course since his page is private, we’ll lead you no further than this for the time being – instead you can feel free to follow him on Twitter @Cyanogen instead, I’m sure he’ll welcome you to it. There you’ll be treated to updates on all the goings on inside the CyanogenMod world, a place where you can download the custom ROM CyanogenMod 7, a build for Android that you’ll need to hack your device to run.

Now what does this mean for Samsung? We have no idea. Likely it’ll mean some modifications in the future to TouchWiz reflecting the innovations Cyanogen himself has made, thusly improving the Android landscape as a whole depending on how you look at it.

What does this mean for CyanogenMod? Kondik assures us all that he will continue to help lead the team of CyanogenMod developers while he works separately for Samsung. Kondik has let it be known that Samsung will allow him to take the skills he’s learned in working on Android in the developer world and use them in the “real world.” According to Kondik, there are no immediate plans for licensing CyanogenMod directly, Samsung instead hiring him for his obvious skills and knowledge of the Android system.

CyanogenMod is safe, but remains separate from Samsung!

Between that and Photoshop integration famous art software into the iPad, I think we’re pretty much set for news today. Oh you’d like a whole lot more? Well let’s take a look then – perhaps there’s more deeper in the bag.

Before you start this week, you’ve GOT to check out Rue’s SlashGear Weekly Roundup video – catch it each week! Next see Philip Berne chat about his rubbishness at gadget advice and see Don note to the world that we’ve got more entertainment opportunities than ever. Don’t forget to rejoice with us in anticipation of Portal 2!

We’ve got another emerging masterpiece coming out each and every weekend now, one by the name of Science Week in Review – check it out!

Then one of the most awesome upgrades to our inner workings is the newfound teaching element – one that’s emerging on both Android Community and SlashGear. Today let’s look at two BIGGIES: SlashGear 101: What is Android? and SlashGear 101: What is Android 3.0 Honeycomb?

Then it’s back to Apple as they build a gaming PR team, get some excellent projections for the iPad through 2015, and have their private key crack opened allowing in unofficial AirPlay streaming!

Finally get your new BlackBerry PlayBook fightin’ words, see a laser beam set a boat on fire, and some undeniably epic Star Wars ads mocking Windows Phone 7.

Then the biggest news in the world if you’re an Android hacker, developer, or just plain fun haver- Cyanogenmod 7 Stable is out now!

As promised, modder cyanogen has released a hacked ROM for the Google Nexus One. Described as “something to play with for now”, suggesting that a more in-depth firmware mod is planned, the replacement ROM optimizes the smartphone’s speed and enables USB tethering among other things.

Once the new ROM is installed, you can then go and install the various other applications that are already available for the Nexus One, such as wired tether, the VPNC client, and the Adfree plugin. As we warned the other day, installing a non-official ROM to your smartphone always carries the risk that you might brick the handset and leave yourself subject to the (likely minimal) sympathy of Google’s support team.

Android 2.0 may only have been officially announced last week, but don’t underestimate the speed of the open-source community. They’ve already got a basic install of the new OS running on the original HTC Dream (aka the T-Mobile G1); it’s not optimized yet, which means the handset chugs along rather than whipping through the pages like we’re finding on the Verizon DROID by Motorola, but it’s certainly working.

Video demo after the cut

Right now the build also lacks the Android Market and the usual Google Apps, and there’s no way of adding new apps to the handset. As we noted when Android 2.0 was launched, it seems Google have borrowed a lot of the third-party concepts from HTC Sense and MOTOBLUR and integrated them more fully into the core OS. That presents a challenge for future iterations of those enhancements, but it’s great news for the end-user.

There’s a public download here [zip file] but it’s really not ready for prime-time yet; this is all a demo to show 2.0 working on the Dream. Arch hacker Cyanogen has promised to deliver a fully-functional build once he has access to the source code, so we’re recommend watching the video to whet your appetite and then waiting for that.
