Intel atom logoThe Intel Atom N450 release date controversy continues, and this time there’s a second processor that’s apparently being brought along for the ride.  Despite Intel’s protestations to the contrary, the 1.66GHz N450 – the replacement for the N270 chip currently found in most netbooks – is still on track for a launch in Q1 2010, where it will apparently be accompanied with a 1.83GHz Atom N470.

intel core logosIt’s not quite the September 6th announcement we expected, but Intel have finally come clean on their new Core i7-860, i7-870 and Core i5-750 processors, along with a cluster of new Xeon chips.  The three new Nehalem-based consumer processors run at 2.80GHz, 2.93GHz and 2.66GHz respectively, with the two Core i7 chips having four cores and eight threads each, while the Core i5 chip – which lacks Hyper Threading support – manages with four cores and four threads.

Each can be flipped into Turbo mode, with the i7-860 scaling up to 3.46GHz, the i7-870 up to 3.6GHz, and the i5-750 up to 3.2GHz.  All three have a TDP of 95W, and will be priced – when bought in 1,000 unit quantities – at $284, $562 and $196 each, respectively.

Many of our mobile devices today that we take for granted like MIDs and smartphones don’t use full mobile processors. Many of these devices make do with lower performance MCUs and ASICs rather than full CPUs.

intel logo sbYou don’t have to look deeply at the numbers for Dell, HP, and other major computer makers to get an idea of how well the PC industry is doing in the current economic climate. We can look at things like CPU sales and GPU shipments to get a good broad overview of how well the market is doing since every computer sold no matter the brand has a CPU and a GPU inside.

Word of another seven CULV processors in Intel's thin-and-light CPU range has leaked, with the new chips expected to arrive in early Q4 2009 in time with Windows 7.  Full specifications of the chips are unknown - in fact we don't even know what clock speed they each run at - but they do slot into the existing SU2x00, SU4x00 and SU7x00 ranges.

Sony’s latest PS3 may be slimmer, smaller and quieter than its predecessor, but its real surprise may be lurking inside.  The company has apparently updated their Cell processor built on 45nm processes rather than the previous 65nm chip; that not only makes for cheaper production, helping Sony bring down the PS3 Slim’s price to $299.99, but it also brings with it increased performance.

Intel are tipped to have scheduled their shift to 32nm "Sandy Bridge" chip architecture by Q4 2010, according to the latest loose-talk at PC manufacturers.  The technology will replace Nehalem and Westmere, the latter expected to shift to 32nm processes in Q4 this year.  Westmere will add six-core processors to the company's line, and go on sale alongside 45nm quad-core Nehalem chips.

VIA’s Nano-ITX boards have already acquired something of a following among people building tiny embedded computers, HTPC-style media streamers or other compact gadgets, but what happens if you want to take your media-PC-in-a-toaster to the nearest desert or mountain top?  Step forward the VIA EPIA N700-10EW, an unassuming name for a low-power board capable of running in temperatures from minus 20-degrees centigrade to plus 70-degrees.
