Intel Oak Trail tablet platform in mass production; ARM still not worried

Intel has apparently begun mass production of its Oak Trail platform, targeting tablet PCs. According to DigiTimes' industry sources, the platform - which combines an Atom Z670 processor and SM35 chipset - will sell for around $25 with MeeGo to OEMs; if they want Windows 7, they'll have to shell out more. Samsung Orion tablet gets previewed ahead of presumed 2011 debut

Samsung's next-gen tablet platform apparently made a preview appearance at the ARM Technical Symposium 2010 in Taipei this week, confirming for the first time that the company intends to use its dual-core Orion processor in larger-screen slates. The prototype - which DigiTimes refers to as Orion, which as far as we're aware is actually the chipset itself - also has a quad-core ARM Mali-400-based GPU capable of encode and decode of Full HD 1080p with an HDMI 1.3a output that can be concurrently run while the Cortex A9 chip simultaneously drives two onboard displays. Qualcomm next-gen Snapdragon MSM8960 detailed: LTE, CPU & GPU boost, more

Qualcomm has outed the first in its next-generation Snapdragon family, the MSM8960, a dual-core chipset with around 5x the performance of the original Snapdragon, 4x the graphics performance, and an integrated multi-mode modem supporting both 3G and 3G LTE. Expected to being sampling in 2011, the MSM8960 will be built on 28nm processes, and use 75-percent less power than the first-gen Snapdragons. Read The Full Story

Intel belatedly grab spotlight for record-breaking Tianhe-1A supercomputer

Remember the Chinese Tianhe-1A supercomputer which NVIDIA took credit for "powering" with its Tesla GPUs back in October? It seems Intel would like some of the processing credit as well; they've pushed out a press release of their own, claiming it's Intel Xeon 5600 series processors that "powers" the world's fastest supercomputer. AMD Llano Fusion APU launch delayed to H2 2011 over poor production rates?

AMD's Llano Fusion APUs may promise to revolutionise HD video and graphics, but it seems the company has to finesse their production first. According to DigiTimes' sources at motherboard manufacturers, lower than expected yield rates for 32nm chips at Globalfoundries has led to a delay in Llano's launch, with AMD concerned that large chunks of its early batches could be defective. As a result, there's talk that the original launch in the first half of 2011 has been pushed back until early in the second half of the year, with mass production not tipped until August or September 2011. Intel Chief River notebook chips to see mass-production in Sept 2011?

Intel has supposedly been paving the way for mass production of its upcoming Chief River notebook platform, according to DigiTimes' shady sources at motherboard manufacturers.  Built using the company's 22nm Ivy Bridge processors, and boasting native USB 3.0 support, Chief River will apparently go into production in September 2011, with an official launch following in January 2012. MacBook Pro 15/17 get 2.8GHz Core i7 options

Apple's "Back to the Mac" event may have been all about OS X 10.7 Lion and the new MacBook Air range, but the company's web gibbons have also been fiddling with the processor options for the MacBook Pro.  Intel's 2.8GHz Core i7 processor is now listed as an option for both the 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro notebooks, though you'll need to opt for the high-spec versions in order to select it.
