It doesn't happen all the time, but it's not so rare that we're shocked to find an unannounced chip supposedly making its way into a very announced laptop. The Acer Aspire One 721 originally launched with the Nile line of AMD processors, which are said to offer better performance and battery life than their Intel competitors. The Aspire One 721 is able to play back HD video, and it has plenty of performance under the hood for quick operations. Intel is actively discouraging sales of its new Huron River chips, according to sources at notebook manufacturers, despite machines based on the new processors expected in early Q1 2011. Apple's future processor and GPU plans are the subject of numerous leaks today, with sources revealing that the company has been testing Intel Sandy Bridge Core iX chips for several months now, ahead of including them in future MacBook Pro and Mac Pro models, among others. Meanwhile, the company is also tipped to be considering solely using Sandy Bridge integrated graphics in its entry-level notebooks and ultraportables, while higher-end machines would switch from NVIDIA chips to AMD's Radeon range. Intel has announced manufacturer partners intending to produce 35 Atom-based tablets in 2011, with systems running Windows, Android and MeeGo all on the cards. CEO Paul Otellini confirmed the news at a tech conference this week, describing the two versions of Atom - Oak Trail and Moorestown - as targeted at Windows and Android/MeeGo tablets respectively. Texas Instruments has announced its latest mobile processor, the TI OMAP4440, a SoC packaging a pair of 1.5GHz ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore CPUs along with two ARM Cortex-M3 cores to power-efficiently offload time-critical and control tasks. Coupled with the POWERVR 3D graphics engine, that provides a quoted 1.25x increase in graphics performance (including 2x faster HD video playback, with support for 1080p60 and 3D stereoscopic 1080p) and a 30-percent cut in webpage loading times. Intel has apparently begun mass production of its Oak Trail platform, targeting tablet PCs. According to DigiTimes' industry sources, the platform - which combines an Atom Z670 processor and SM35 chipset - will sell for around $25 with MeeGo to OEMs; if they want Windows 7, they'll have to shell out more. Samsung Orion tablet gets previewed ahead of presumed 2011 debut

Samsung's next-gen tablet platform apparently made a preview appearance at the ARM Technical Symposium 2010 in Taipei this week, confirming for the first time that the company intends to use its dual-core Orion processor in larger-screen slates. The prototype - which DigiTimes refers to as Orion, which as far as we're aware is actually the chipset itself - also has a quad-core ARM Mali-400-based GPU capable of encode and decode of Full HD 1080p with an HDMI 1.3a output that can be concurrently run while the Cortex A9 chip simultaneously drives two onboard displays. Qualcomm next-gen Snapdragon MSM8960 detailed: LTE, CPU & GPU boost, more

Qualcomm has outed the first in its next-generation Snapdragon family, the MSM8960, a dual-core chipset with around 5x the performance of the original Snapdragon, 4x the graphics performance, and an integrated multi-mode modem supporting both 3G and 3G LTE.
